For USA Citizens: I submitted my FBI background check to be apostilled and it took about 77 days (it expires at 90 days). I did another FBI background check and after sending to Washington DC to be apostilled I contacted my state congressman to fast-track the process; I subsequently received it at my house in about 10 days. **Keep in mind: The background check clock starts ticking when conducted and not after it is apostilled.**

Hey, thanks for this vid! I'm a Canadian and New Zealand citizen, living in Canada. I haven't spent much time here lately, and have spent a lot of time in Madrid (Spaib in general). Looking to give up Montreal for a new life in Madrid and this visa seems like the best one for my situation. The thing is, I'm not a "digital" Nomad... I'm a true Nomad! I lead tours for a living, and lately have been escorting tours in Europe (including Spain) for a Canadian company. I also work for other American companies, leading tours in Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. All of my income comes from these companies and/or from rental income (Airbnb when I'm not in Montreal). I get paid in my US, Australian, and Canadian bank accounts, and I'm a tax resident of Canada (Quebec).
My question is, does this visa still apply if the work I'm doing is not done in Spain and I want to reside there when I'm not on tour? Having escorted tours in Spain this year (but being paid by a Canadian company) would this potentially affect my application?
I know it's an unusual situation, but I would appreciate any advice you can give!
    Thanks again!

Patrick, just to clarify about Spain's tax requirements: As an American digital nomad applying for a long-term dig nomad visa in Spain (and staying longer than 6 months), I would be taxed at 24% for my work income regardless of where that income is earned? If my primary employer for my digital work is in the States, for example, I would be taxed 24% on all of that income? Or is that incorrect, and I'm taxed 24% only on income from Spanish employers?

I meet all the minimum income requirements, plus I also have a bachelor's degree + 8 years of experience in my trade. However, I'm currently classified as an "Independent Contractor" in my contract with my company. Here are my questions:
    1. Do I classify myself as an employee or a freelancer?
    2. If it's the latter, do I also need to have an established business (like an LLC) in my home country (Pakistan)? For reference, I currently do not have one.

If you are a freelancer and your only income is what gets credited to your home country bank account by your employer, and if you have no clients in Spain, do you pay 24 percent tax on the income credited each month into your home country bank account.

Are you sure it is 24% flat tax? I heard it is 15%. If it is 24%, it doesn't make any sense to move from UK for tax purposes. But access to EU market would be lucrative though!

    • @PatrickGuideBarcelona

Again, I'm not the expert here, but I believe with the rule it's 24%. Once you become a tax resident the the Beckham Law allows for the 15%. But if you are interested you should contact a lawyer like Cristian!

This is for freelancers. You will enter the autonomo system and be taxed as any Spanish autonomo is which is a sliding scale starting at 24%. If you work for a company that has a tax agreement with Spain you pay taxes in your own country.

@@PatrickGuideBarcelona That does not answer the question. It just points to the place to have a consult. People want to know what is the cost of this group from submitting the paperwork to receiving the visa not just for the initial consultation. It can be misleading and not worth it if its 10k in fees to get this done vs doing it yourself or having someone else do it.

There’s a simple answer, and it’s linked to income taxes. In the US, one pays a low tax rate (percentage is 1/2 or less at the same income levels as Spain), but higher for health insurance. In Spain, the nominal rate for taxes about 50k is 44%, but health insurance is lower. Even though the bucket called health insurance in Spain is lower, the 24% income tax balances it out.

It's an insane amount of taxes and Social Security payments that they want you to pay quarterly and the Social Security monthly up to 500 euros every month. Why is anyone gonna do that if we are literally only going to stay for a year? Honestly, I don't know who's gonna go through all of that hassle.
