Owning one myself, I can see this happening. I currently do not have a charger at home, but as I’m working on it, the supercharger I go to is 20 minutes away bc I live near the beach, and they’re closer to highways and big suburbs. I can’t use my trickle charger during the week because they’re painting my building either, but as temporary as it is, it does get annoying. I've heard that it's much easier to just charge it for a few minutes without waiting until that LOW THRESHOLD where it needs to "warm up" to get to the supercharging zone. It makes sense. And I also live in Cali so we have tons of superchargers that you can sit for a few minutes instead of an hour+ because you waited until the battery was so low. Little charges make it more manageable. Just like filling gas is probably best at the half mark so if you forget and have shit to do, you aren't panicking about gas.

The new model 3 Tesla's have 353 miles of range so that's not bad for a road trip. So it depends on the model of Tesla you get one for more city driving and the other more for road trips. Using the AC in a petrol car does lower your car’s fuel efficiency by an average of 3 miles per gallon depending on the age and size of your car. So Tesla will have something similar to that effect. Shelby would need to provide the car efficiency data (which all Tesla's have in the heads up display or settings on the tablet) to get a better idea how much charge the A/C or heater is using.

Good Vlog and nice to see you endorsing/working with Omaze! Great site that does a lot of good for charities! BTW, if you have to use an extension cord for charging the Tesla make sure it's a heavy duty or contractor grade or else they can overheat, also the ones with the "glow" ends that light up to let you know it's plugged in are really bad about burning up the see through plastic caps when used for a long time or when high current (like car charging) is being drawn for extended periods of time. Not dangerous if they blacken up and it will function fine, but it will ruin the lights in the cord.

A few things… I would change your video title to say “3 reasons why you shouldn’t buy a Standard Range Model 3/Y”, or “3 reasons you should buy a LONG RANGE instead of a Standard Range.”
Pretty much all of your complaints have more to do with the fact you bought a Standard Range instead of a Long Range. The SR+ is not really intended to be a road trip car. It can be, but you will obviously have to stop more frequently. The 240 mile range is not based on highway driving. It’s a mix of city and highway, mainly city. It’s really designed for people that don’t drive that much or who are on a tight budget but really want a Tesla. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still better than most other EVs currently available and the Supercharger access means you can go just about anywhere, but the long range is what you should have bought if you wanted to go on frequent trips. Also, I don’t know how often you check your tire pressures but you need to keep the tires inflated to 42-44PSI. It also looks like you removed the aero wheel covers which in and of itself hurts your range by 5-7%. If you buy a Long Range AWD Model 3 you can easily go 240-300 miles on the interstate going 70-80MPH. Obviously if it’s super cold outside (

As a Northern Iowa/Illinois driver I can say Point #2 only really matters in relation to Point #1. Yes, I have to charge more percentage per day in the dead of winter, but it's still cheaper than gas and always full by morning. Also, super easy to pre-heat my car. Road trips are the only time where I'd be concerned about it. Still can make the 2 hour drive to my parents though. I just have to be more conscious about starting with a full charge. Granted there are much colder places than here. Also just keep in mind that cold weather range loss will be decreasing with the Model Y and the new Model 3 because of the heat pump.

Not sure how efficient heat pump is since I have to try to know, but cold weather is a real issue that you should concern. I have long range dual motor and commute 180 miles couple times a week did give me range anxiety sometimes, just when driving in cold weather plus going up and down the hill, and drive fast 80 miles/h. Sometimes I wonder if I would gone for single motor to reduce car's weight and acceleration that would give me some extra range.

Shelby's is a pre-heat pump Model 3 so her limited cold weather experience is out of date for current newly purchased Teslas. Her super hot experience in her car is more indicative of super cold performance in a heat pump Tesla than her actual super cold performance would be in the car she owns. I also have an older Model 3 (in the Seattle area so I avoid the extreme cold; it's barely been below freezing overnight so far this winter) and I definitely notice a range difference between winter and summer, but I have resistive heating which is far less efficient.

I own a Model Y, and it comes with a heat pump, which uses less energy than a resistive heater found in earlier Model 3's like Shelby's. Newer Model 3's, as well as the refreshed Model S/X all have a heat pump as well, so they shouldn't use nearly as much energy as the older models. But they are a lot noisier, almost sounding like a gas engine at times, though luckily you can't really hear it inside the vehicle.
But like Shelby said, if you don't have reliable home, or workplace charging, it can be more of a hassle. On the plus side, more places are setting up charging stations, and as more EV's show up on the road, there will be more demand for these slow chargers at parking lots at work, shopping centers, and apartment complexes.

  • @fohpono8884

If you use your EV vehicle primarily just to go to work or for shopping, have a 220/240 volt outlet in your house and can convert your electricity to Time of Use (TOU) Rates, you can almost drive for Free. The current TOU Rate in Vegas from 10 pm to early morning is about $.05 per kWh. By charging over night in LV, you could almost be driving around for free! In LA, it is $.19 per kWh so the savings isn’t as much, but still cheaper than those DC charging rates, and you won’t be damaging your batteries as much. The Tesla onboard computer eases the range anxiety somewhat by planning your cross country trips through its Supercharger system. That helps, but it still can’t compare to the ubiquitous gas stations.

The title is misleading btw lol only cause it looks like you didn’t like Tesla, but to be honest it’s actually a helpful video for me. I’m looking to get one and all other videos just talk about the benefits. Appreciate you out this together, thank you!

Great tips! Tesla has been on our radar for a while now. We're travelling at the moment so don't need a car, but hopefully our next car will be an electric one 😁

People should know that unless they are real old there is an EV in their future, ICE cars will be largely gone in the next 15-20 years. Foolish to buy a new ICE now, EVs so much cheaper to own, electric 'fuel' much cheaper than gasoline, no oil changes, no tuneups, very rare brake jobs thanks to regen braking I hardly ever use my brakes. If you have your own place so much less hassel to just plug in at night and next morning you're all charged up. It usually take about 4 hrs on my 40 amp 240 v circuit. Of course the amount of discharge and the level of charge you want is variable so charger time will vary but if you plug in at night not a problem.

@@Chainyanker007 Great points! We come from Australia, where the rollout of EVs and supporting infrastructure has been much slower. We're travelling at the moment, so have no need for a car just yet. Perhaps in a few years we'll buy one again. It's going to be a huge technology leap from our old car when we do!

Myself as a guy that did 20 years in the military and drove non stop from anchorage Alaska to Phoenix Arizona twice and used to drive between Florida and Arizona 4 or 5 times a year the frequent charging stops are now a plus not a deterrent. Especially now that I’m getting older it wipes me out driving 12 hours or more straight only stopping for gas. I’m just miserable and sore for a few days after a trip like that in a gas car now. Doing it in a Tesla and stopping every few hours for a real break yeah the trip takes longer but I’m not sore and tired when I get there.

it usually gets that cold in parts of the US, the batteries will still work but with reduced range.

I think your reasons 1 and 2 are very, very minor.
I've done a ton of trips and greatly prefer my Tesla over an of my other cars including a car I can drive almost 600mi without stopping. What I've found is that I am FAR more relaxed and comfortable during and after my trip even though I stopped more and added 30min/1hr to total time depending on trip. This was due to 1) autopilot which really really helps make the drive far more relaxing and 2) stopping occasionally to get and walk, etc was a game changer IMO. Though I do buy more snacks that way.
I live in AZ and I can say that I am extreme heat. My range is pretty much right on for the expectations when I drive it as expected. AC doesn't really do anything to the range. However, even in my very moderate winters, the cold weather definitely makes an impact. This should be a FAR lower issue though now that Tesla is releasing cars with heat pumps. I also have co-workers in very cold climates that still say this was the best car they have ever owned.
I absolutely agree on almost any scenario for lack of home charging. One of the biggest benefits of an EV (tesla or any other) is being able to just plug in when you get home and start the day with a full tank. I easily save $1200+ a year from driving my Tesla 3 vs my prev Hybrid Fusion SE (42MPG). I love literally never thinking about my range in my day to day. But if I had to depend on chargign stations, then that would suck right now since they are rare and slow (except superchargers which are rare). However, I do have co-workers who either 1) use the free slow destination charger at our office or 2) superchargers only since they are both free for them. I still think I'd rather pay the $20 or so it costs me on my monthly electric bill (64 miles a day) than to go out of my way to use a supercharger every few days.

I haven’t driven road trips through cold weather, but using superchargers is about time to take a rest, buy drinks, restroom and web surf.
I only have the standard battery.
I installed a 16 and 32 amp charger with 200 volt (208v three phase breaker). I can recharge from 20% to 90% in 5.5 hours. But i am an electrician.
I think the autopilot makes tesla stand out for road trips. I havnt used enough to be sure.

I do rent a house. I just put in a NEMA 1450 it cost me about $25.00 and I charge with my mobile charger at 33 mph. That solves most of the problems you mentioned.

    • @RepRapper

The NEMA 1450 is a 220 volt dryer or range outlet.
