  • Siegfried - Stig Fohg Andersen
    Brünnhilde - Irene Théorin
    Hagen - Peter Klaveness
    Gunther - Guido Paevatelu
    Gutrune - Ylva Kihlberg
    Waltraute - Annette Bod
    Alberich - Sten Byriel
    Director - Kasper Bech Holten
The Choir of the Royal Danish Opera
The Royal Danish Orchestra under Sir Michael Schønwandt
Excepting James Johnson (Wotan, recurring in Götterdämmerung as a silent role), the Copenhagen Ring is sung by an entirely Scandinavian cast, mostly in-house from the Royal Danish Opera. Nevertheless, the singing in this recording of the Ring is considered to be world class.
The production by Kasper Bech Holten, now Director of Opera at the Royal Opera in London, has been called the Feminist Ring for its unusual perspectives on Wagner's female characters and the decision to choose a framing story focused on Brünnhilde. It is also well-known for its setting in a familial instead of an epic sphere, and its elaborately detailed, cramped set designs.
The video recording is characterised by frequent cuts and unusual camera angles. 18 cameras in total were used, including viewpoints from the drain of Mime's sink during the Forging Scene in Siegfried.
Though I stated on the Siegfried videos that Rheingold and Walküre were already on UA-cam (where I got them from in the first place), I have been unable to find them. I'll probably reupload them later this week.
May be unsuitable for conservative Wagnerians.

I'd be lying if I said this was my favorite production, but I do love Hagen's call with the walkie-talkies, air horns, and militia.

The final scene, when Brünnhilde giving birth to a child, a symbol of rebirth and renewal from the ashes of the destruction of the world, made me deeply moved. Appropriate credit should be given to the director, who honored Wagner's immortal glory and the "Eternal Work". Bravi!

The orchestra! Can I take them home with me? There are a few hundred pieces that I would love to hear them play!

Watch a doc on the Colon Ring. That was a disaster. Makes me appreciate this one even more. In the world of updated opera- this is one of the greatest!

A great and meaning füll well constructed play of my beloved Götterdämmerung attickingball the over-rich and sense-emptied interested in keeping their Power - WITHOUT any chance to do so.

DENMARK! I Envy you. Not just for great opera, but your Queen is a passionate, knowledgable opera lover. I live in America- our leader is not a lover of much of anything. That is all I will say.

Jef Olson I live there also and the concept of our “leader” attending an opera or even knowing what it is, is laughable.

@@leonjosowitz5379 I know nothing except what come across in this video. I'd never heard of her. My comment comes from trying to picture Donald Trump sitting there. At least she has attended an opera has has some appreciation, that puts here several notches above " the leader of the free world." Thank you for the reality check. Wishful thinking

The first time I saw this I was distracted by the unusual Hagen but did appreciate this unique direction. There is much to like although I think the up close camerawork didn't do it any favors.
However upon subsequent viewing I began to appreciate Hagen, no matter his vocal limitations, for his portrayal. Well done!

Whether you like it or not, this has to be one of the more moving interpretations of the Ring Cycle.
The staging, especially the end of Gotterdammerung with the immolation of Valhalla/Tree of Life/Gods and subsequent birth of Brunhilde & Siegfried's child is a powerful allegory to the commencement Norse Mythology's "The Age of Heroes"

It's far more entertaining that the Met's 'Busted electric garage door' staging of the Ring Cycle several years back.

Hagen è inascoltabile, vocetta isterica, pure calante
Brunhilde invece è davvero brava, forte granitica, ma anche dolcissima (la scena con WOTAN nel finale è davvero commovente)

I would say that Gutrune is to pretty. She really is an old maid with poor chance to get married, at least not with the good looking, masculine Siegfried. Not without the magic potion making Siegfried forget all other girls. Anyway I like Ylva Kielberg, who also acted as a rheinmaiden in Das Rheingold.
Hagen here is not Gottlob Frick! But he certainly looks like a psycopath.

In this Gutrune is a spoiled whiney rich bitch, doing coke and thumbing through Vogue as she dreams up ways to manipulate. She was turned on by the idea of snagging Siegfried. Its all a game. I know her type. Different, but it worked, with her brother and the set and the 'scarface' vibe.

I did thought Like this firstly, too - but it is really Well thought Killing Alberich is Hagen's only chance to keep the Ring and is consequences Out of the spell "everybody longing for the Ring untill in my hand he had returned." But as this hand is dead now Hagen could really made use of the unlimited power without being forced to handle it over to his father... Very Well thought only the Hagen/Alberich-scene.

That's rewriting Wagner's direction and dramaturgy. You (they can't do that). They have no right to add such a narcissistic attention seeking insertion. None.
