- Basil. One of the most popular herbs in the world, and yet so many of us only grow a few classic varieties. I've got nothing against Genovese or Sweet basil, but there are some REALLY fun varieties to grow that might be better suited to your unique growing conditions or goals as a gardener. Things like holy basil / tulsi, purple basil, thai basil, columnar basil...the list goes on.
Here are 8 varieties of the EPIC Ocimum basilicum to add to your shopping list. If you want to know how to grow basil or prune basil, check out the article below or other videos on my channel.

Eh!! from Canada 🇨🇦 Kevin has taught me so much on this channel. I went from never being able to keep a plant. NOW? well I have basil growing out of control on my 11th floor apartment in Ontario Canada. I have basil growing in hydroponically . I have basil growing in a vertical window garden. I am now The Basil Queen at work . I am now selling it at work. Basil pesto and frozen basil balls. I can grow anything now. Thanks to you Kevin.
WOWWWW
I am also a basil plant addict. I have 11. Globe, Lemon, Cinnamon, Dark Opal, Siam Queen, Genovese, and Minette. I use basil in a lot of things. And like to make basil salt!
Oh my.. no way, cinnamon sounds like a must
My basil does fantastic but I don’t know what to use it for besides pesto. How do you use it? I would love to try new flavors but I can’t find good recipes that uses it
Wow! Glad to know I'm in so much company with my 'addiction' to multiple varieties of basil. Cinnamon, Lemon, Thai, Red Ruben, Purple Ruffles, Lettuce Leaf, Genovese, Spicy Bush, Siam Queen, Holy Basil. I love them all!
Holy basil had hundreds of uses! Look them up and get your hands on one. Awesome plant, awesome smells and flavours
Dark Opal Basil has a similar taste to Thai Basil so I make a "Purple" Thai Pesto. The pasta comes out beautiful. And taste real good!
please elaborate!
I love dark opal in al pomodoro, taste much better than "lemon basil".
Great video.
Growing up in India, Tulsi (holy basil) was something we had every day. Almost every household has a Tulsi plant and it is considered sacred. Great medicinal properties.
Came to know about other types of basil and Pesto, much much later.
I love Holy Basil!
There’s nothing more refreshing than to walk through my tiny garden and brush against the plant!
I’m in zone 6a, and even though Tulsi is not a perennial, it has sprouted up in various places in my garden! Almost as if it’s saying “I like it here better”, so I allow it to grow! 💖
My holy basil has a sweet fruity smell, it’s literally the best thing I ever smelled! Flowers very fast though! Never smelled a more pleasantly aromatic plant!
Tulsi is also known as kaprao in Thai cooking. Pad kaprao is a Thai dish that used a TON of it.
I went a little crazy with basil seed purchases this year. Very excited to grow Sweet Dani basil, which is a lemon basil variety. Lemon basil is used in a lot of Southeast Asian cuisines too. It goes into Lao stews and Indonesian curries.
I love lemon basil too, I planted it in my garden and it survives the winter and keeps coming back, or it is self seeding. It smells great.
@wild Times I'm in Kentucky, our winters are pretty mild.
What do you use the lemon basil for? I grew some of it this year and haven’t found a lot of uses for it.
@@beverlyzientara2194
Lemon bacsil is for people who like a bit of the taste of lemon in the respicies u use for cooking dish. More for dish form the med area.....
@@beverlyzientara2194 it works well with fish
@@beverlyzientara2194 I have lemon basil in my garden that I just let reseed itself. I have made pesto with it and my son in law uses it when he bakes chicken.
I live in Indonesia, I have so many lemon basil, it's so easy to grow here. Just throw the seeds on the ground, they will grow up easily. 😁
I love this format. Varieties are the spice of life! More videos please with ALL of the varities. I am looking for more *perennial* herbs, vegetables, fruit and medicinal plants for my (beginners) permaculture landscape, but obviously some of these annual herb flavors are just a necessity. Thanks for another great video.
If I can get my hands on the varieties, you know I'm in!
@@epicgardening I had to laugh at the epic basil shopping...getting and trying all the varieties. In a parallel I will hopefully be doing the same with 4 or 5 Holy Basil Tulsi varieties...plus the lettuce leaf thanks to your description
I’m gonna go basil crazy … nine kinds I found this year!!!
YES! i grow basil every day inside my home! We make spinach, avocado, burritos with onions tomatoes shredded chedder and sour cream. We LOVE fresh basil! the recipe calls for about 8 leaves in each burrito. . . . .usually we use about 20 each! so yum!
Haha basilaholic!
Epic Gardening we. C qxqqcxc
I am growing all the verities this year in my green stalk. The lettuce leaf is great, but the line, lemon, and holy basil are my favorites. Did not realize the African blue grew so large, lol, it has taken over the pock of my green stalk planter.
I'm growing Thai Basil for the first time this year along with my regular old basil. The Thai Basil is so aromatic. I can't pass up sniffing it and eating a few leaves every day. I love my Pho too.
Basil smells just so heavenly. Especially in Pho.
Ugh so true
@@epicgardening willing to sell seeds of all your collection?, I am just starting to get interested in different varieties of basil and difficulty to get all at the same time.
Love this. I am now harvesting seeds from my Florida native wild sweet basil. It's slightly minty and smells like heaven.
I held my breath when he ate the fresh leaves. Mine has aphids under the leaves but very healthy and leafy still.
African Blue Basil was new to me last year and I am totally addicted this year. It is not a perrineal for me in Zone 7 but it propogates very easily. I save a cutting before the frost took it out and I have 20 plus plants ready to plant and share this year. I had honey bees for the first time in years last summer and they were all on this plant!
Boxwood Basil & Thai Tower Basil are my favorite!
If you plant it once, you have it for life...YES! Each season I plant transplanted vegetable right beside the seedlings. They seem endless and my whole garden smells intoxicating!
One of the best gardening vlogs on the internet.
Thai basil is my favorite. I grow them every year, and I always have enough to give some plants to my friends;)
Easily one of my top as well
I'm growing half of those plus cinnamon & purple ruffles. So far, purple ruffles is my favorite. It has a nice licorice flavor to it. I put a small spring in my water. Yum!
Purple ruffles is AMAZING
I just bought Cinnamon Basil seeds because I've never heard of it but love cinnamon....the seeds are so tiny you just sprinkle them on top of soil. Can't wait to taste it!
I have five varieties growing right now: Purple basil, Cinnamon Basil, Thai basil, Italian basil, Sweet basil. Next on my list: African basil!
I'm trying Tulsi in my containers for the first time this year after falling in love with Holy Basil teas. Plum Shiso for the first time too!
Purple ruffles! Looks beautiful in a salad.
Refreshing my basil know-how. Just started Genovese, Dark Opal and Tulsi seeds.
One summer, I had a "Holy Basil" that was quite sweet. Unfortunately, I did not know how to continue to propagate it at the time. Totally, my favorite. Tulsi doesn't seem to be the right plant - unless it just happened to be the nurture vs the nature of the plant. The next family of plants to investigate might be the radishes - from horseradish to wasabi to the French Breakfast and French Dressing, etc. I am at 6,800', zone 6A (Cfa) and would really like soup and salad plants and radish leaves and bulbs meet that need.
Tulsi is a FANTASTIC tea! Tastes like Rooibois without the bitter
I use this as my go to video when I want a Basil pick me up. Truly love your energy and how well you explain everything in terms that even the most basic gardener can understand. Love your channel!
Going to pick up some varieties of basil to try for this year’s garden. Thanks!
I was waiting in anticipation to hear if you pronounced Pho correctly!
Love the stuff,
Love your channel,
Thank you!
Basil is my favorite herb, it was so fun to learn about some new variants! I like to use purple basil to spice up the visuals on my caprese salads
We are growing 11 varieties of basil and only 3 of the 8 you mentioned! Must be a lot of varieties!!
Ohh Wow! Interesting u gave me an idea to collect & plant kinds of Basils soon! Great video! Thanks alot Epic Gardening! Bless you broda!
Great video! I’ve got mammoth basil (grown from seed) and mint basil so far but I want them all now 😁 love having all sorts of herbs to try in food and cocktails 🌿
I need to try the tulsi basil. Sounds so good. I love this style of video of different varieties. So helpful!
I'm getting my feet wet in gardening and bought some sweet basil, but I love it so much I'm curious about other options, thank you!
I planted out purple basil in the front yard last year. During the dry period, some of the stems fell over and began to root in place. When the wet season arrived, it turned into a large bush that is around a meter round. I never knew that they got that big but I am so happy that it is thriving in the garden bed. Every single time that I go downstairs to look at my garden, however, I always see at least one bee hovering about my Thai Basil plants along the front fence.
I wanted to try other basil types, but I have limited space/light, so I went for Genovese since I use it most. But my seed packet actually ended up having some bush basil seeds mixed in, so now I have them growing together and get to experiment with it too!
WOW! Guess our boxstore nursery better get their---- together! I didnt know there were so many different varieties!!! Yes, more videos like this! Thanks for sharing! 💜
Start from seed. Basil tends to be really easy to start, IME, and that let's you start pruning it for bushiness sooner.
Of course!
More videos like this please. I grow basil every year for 5 years now and try to grow a new one each year. At this rate my garden will be taken over by basil. I will be looking for some of these you showed today. Thanks
I didn’t know these varieties. Thanks man
Just when I thought I couldn’t love basil more. Good & Plenty ... 🤣. Very concise and informative. I’m getting into making Thai food. Love this video!
I have a purple basil, but not the same one you described in this video. Instead, the leaves are dark green on the upper side with purple veins, they are solid purple underneath, the flowers are darker purple than the regular green basil, and even the new (non-woody) stems are vivid purple.
Love Basil, I am just getting in to collecting 😋
Yes! I like learning about different varieties of all plants! Great video!
Thanks Lisa!
Just getting into growing basil. I bought lemon basil, and cinnamon basil. However, I will be looking to buy that African Blue basil,
Thanks for the video. It was very informative.
I’m currently growing Greek miniature basil! So much fun!
Cinnamon Basil we grew the same from my friend. Lasts until frost or beyond. The flowering heads make good bouquets.
It’s so great seeing your face pop up when I have a random gardening question 😊 I know I’m always going to get all the info I was looking for
Great video! I clicked on this so fast, basil is my forte, lol. My favorite is Corsican.
Corsican mint is great tok
I started some basil seeds I bought at a local hardware store. After 3 weeks the leaves are huge. Its a very bushy plant but hasn't grown tall, which in my experience growing basil is sort of odd. It's called Mammoth Basil. I havent seen this variety before so hopefully it continues to flourish!
good information about basil.. thank you
Try to get lemon basil too you gonna love it the aroma is amazing good for cooking seafood.
I got some cinnamon basil and the seeds finally growing. I can’t wait to try it! I also just got some lettuce leaf basil, but I’m nursing it back to health.
Thai basil grounded with the flower for garnish in a gin, tonic & lime will change your life forever... I grow it just for drinks! It makes them look fancy as well!
I recently got some dark Opal Basil seeds and I'm super excited, it's so cool! I really hope it does well.
This was a great video!! I have three basils this year and I just harvested abundantly!! Cinnamon and sweet and lemon. My favourite is lemon!!
Love the tropical varieties
Amazing video! 👍🏼👌🏻
Beautiful plants, great detail, happy gardening♥
Thanks you too!
Excellent video, love your content man.
Ahaha I love it.
"were gonna go epic gardening mode"
I never knew there were so many basils!
Gotta grow em all!
I love Dark Opal Basil
Loved this episode one of my favorite basil's is shiso basil it comes in red and green varieties, often served with sushi, easy to grow and a must have with Japenese food!
Yes, love this kind of roundup video (especially since I became a little obsessed with growing different basil varieties this year)! I got some lemon basil seeds this year and kind of fell in love. It's so fragrant and nice in fruity green smoothies or even lemony pesto.
Very interesting varieties! I love my sweet basil and have had many plants from it to share with family and friends ☺
So fun to propagate!
Oh there are many more varieties.... Even Tulsi comes in 4 different varieties. I myself love collecting and growing various basil varieties.
Oh yes, could have done 30!
But Tulsi is not Basil,,, it's known as Kaama kastuuri, in South India.
My grandma has many of the Greek ones! It's amazing!
I do the little spicy greek basils as pollinator buddies. They go in a huge pot under my sunflowers. :) We dont like the spicyness enough to use in food. They are so stinking cute!
And OMgosh, thank you for showing us Thai basil and Holy basil one right after the other. I have been having a hard time finding info about the differences between the two. That was perfect, showing them together that way.
Me too! I Love Basil! It is so fun to grow! I like growing it where I can run my hand across it when I walk by. I wish I could fine the variegated variety again.. the pesto variety. Love it! I like lemon and lime basil!
Lemon and lime is so nice!
I was not aware of all the basil varieties, thanks for sharing 👍
You're welcome!
i have four types of basil i have the African blue one and you're right the bees love it
Holy Basil is a good one to use as a rooting agent and fruit fly trapping. The plant is perennial in tropic
We have dark opal basil been sold in local Metro chain, pretty cheap too compared to our usual greens prices. And off course I transferred it to my shelf-garden, but as soon as it got comforted and start to grow again, every new leaf it got is almost completely green.
Wonderful video!
Great video and a nice selection of basil. 🙏🌱
My next project is Bonsai Basil!😁
Ooooo can't wait to see that
@@epicgardening 🙏
Thanks great informative video
I love spicy bush basil!!!!! I've been trying to grow it from seeds, but I've been having trouble with it.
Love this video! Thanks
Basil goals. I’m trying to grow my sweet itialian basil year round. I think it can survive winter in Arizona.
Yes love this style of video😃👍🏼
Thank you for this! I love Basil and Pho!! I finally found an awesome vegetarian recipe here on UA-cam! Can’t wait for the propagation video!! I love classic Italian sweet & Lemon Basil (I regrow from the seeds). I’ve tried two others but don’t remember them, Thai &…. ?
Thai basil is my favorite. I like using it in my shrimp spring rolls.
Just planted coriander + 7 varieties of basil : Tulsi, dark opal, giant lettuce, Thai, cinnamon, Lime and Ruby red. I live in Italy so normal sweet basil is incredibly common, no need to buy seeds online.
I got a variety pack of basil seeds and I got a lot of these varieties in the 12 I started. I got 1 lettuce leaf basil!! I looooooove it! I’m really looking forward to your video on how to save the seeds or propagate. I want to ensure I have that lettuce leaf for next year as well as the Thai basil.
Lettuce leaf is SO crazy. Glad you got your hands on one!
I grow a lot of different kinds. Cinnamon, Lemon (Mrs. Burns and Sweet Dani), Lime, Sweet Basil, Genovese, Lettuce Leaf, Italian Large Leaf, Holy Basil, Spicy Globe, Licorice, Thai, Siam Queen, Dark Opal, Red Rubin, Purple Ruffle. I want to try the African Blue Basil and Greek Basil.
what a narration! Super!
THAT WAS AWESOME! thank you for inspiring me to pursue my LOVE for Basil💓💓💓AND start grow2 again
love to hear that! Best of luck with your upcoming
plants!
Awesome basil!
Good format
Pho, for Sha!! Love it!!
Right now I have 12 varieties of basil!!! Planning to have more!!
Thanks for a great video! Pesto perpetuo is now definitely on my to get list!!
How about Ocimum basilicum ( bush basil) it's great for small gardens and indoors. I had him growing for couple of years all year round. Definitely one of my favorites
Returning to this once again since last spring, currently in the process of sprouting 5 of my varieties, from last year's experience I would say the thai at 6:50 tastes like anason, and just like the african blue it produces flowers like crazy so make sure you cut it back often, it turns really sour if it goes into full bloom. I tried cutting back the flowers but then the entire plant sort of just went tasteless.
I saw a new basil I had never seen before in a nursery in Los Angeles called Amethyst basil. It's a purple basil variety and looks almost black. It was very cool and I need to go back and buy it. Currently I'm growing a purple basil, a pronto pesto basil and sweet basil in my apartment garden. Yum!
I picked up some cinnamon basil and purple ruffled basil at my local nursery. I love basil so much! Whether it be in a caprese salad or in a bowl of Pho 🍜, basil is my favorite herb, "Pho Sho' " LOL 😉
A friend gave me a jar of Thai Basil that she had dehydrated, and it is phenomenal! The most unique flavor I have ever tasted. The smell is fantastic. Whenever I open the spice cabinet, I always take a whiff! Seventh heaven. The leaves are smaller than the Thai Basil you featured in this video. I am wondering what kind of dehydrator you would recommend. I will have to grow my own this year and want to do it justice. I'm loving your videos!
