Clarification: For green onions, you can cut 1-2" above the soil, but I find the technique I described to work better for maximizing green top harvest, then you can pull and use the entire green onion once you've gotten what you want from the tops.
rule of thumb when trimming trees (winter, dummies, not summer).. one third crown reduction, no more.. often quoted among the tree butchers, trimmers, and arborists.. just saying.. probably a nearly universal rule
I have six dwarf tomatoes growing indoors, in each container I have green onions growing . When we need green onions for food preparation, I trim the onions in one of the pots. This rotation is perfect.
Hey dude, I'm from Finland and I've been watching your videos all day now. It feels like you're genuinely excited about gardening and teaching others, and you're so energetic in every video that it just makes me happy. I'm preparing for my garden this year, as it's still a bit too cold for planting, but watching these videos just makes me look more forward into the time where the danger of frost is over. Keep it up, man! I think that a little gardening is something we all need now.
Rosmariini Sydänmaa Not to take away from Kevins videos, but Christopher makes some great videos as well and he's in Norway. Check out what he did to help extend his seasons: ua-cam.com/video/C3qoVN-XnIM/v-deo.html
What a beautiful comment. I think one thing I wish I had done from the beginning of the pandemic was learning how to garden herbs (which I just started doing a day ago on my birthday) and learning to slow down and take my time. I need to move, and the next place I'm hoping to move to is like a cottage or mountain type home, with a lot of area to grow herbs. And just live a quiet life. With my plants, my books, my family, and my dog.
Perhaps he was referring to the Gorgan Medusa where it was interpreted that her reptilian extensions could regenerate more heads once chopped off? Who really knows. Sci-fi has screwed us all up. Good thing you don’t care cause neither do most. ;)
I have lemon mint that is slightly different. I can actually trim that with a small hedge clipper and new grows fine. Same on oregano. In early spring, you need to trim all the dead off. I think oregano draws more bees than anything else I've planted.
Can you please do more videos on herbs for beginners? Lemongrass, sage, tarragon, thyme and oregano are the types of herbs we would also most likely want to grow because they're expensive at the supermarket.
This was so extremely helpful! I have been so lost when it comes to pruning and for some reason, I haven't been able to find any videos like this one that explain it so well. The info was straightforward but also in depth enough for me to feel comfortable doing it myself. Of course, the demonstration was also extremely helpful! Would love to see more like this about thyme, oregano, parsley, etc
I learned a lot from this video and would like to see more. I'm growing my first thyme this year, so would like to see it included in your next prune/harvest video. (Thanks for all the help you've given me through your channel. It's been an inspiration.)
Thank you for showing such good pruning tips. I love the way you show I. Your video clip: - short videos - clear methods - precise techniques I found them very helpful, good instructions, realistically clear. Please do more pruning techniques for herbs, as well as seasonal veggies ( like the present time now is almost the end of summer: late July & beginning of August: what vegetable can we grow ( seeding, planting, pruning, fertilizing,...etc...). Thank you again. I appreciate your helpful gardening ideas.
This is great information. I was about to cut all of my chives to an inch tall so they would grow again, but I use my chives in almost every meal I make. I'm used to going out and clipping what I need. I was resulting to the fact that I would have to wait 14 day's for the new growth to be mature enough to where I could put the chives back into use again. Your technique is much more to my liking and how I use my chives almost everyday. Thanks for that.
I love my new Centurion micro pruning tools. So handy for my herbs in my countertop Aero Garden. Living in Las Vegas I’ve not had good luck with my gardening in this desert heat. Aero Gardens have turned my brown thumb to green.
This video is 4 years ago so you probably have pruning for cilantro somewhere but that’s what I would have asked for. In this one you covered the others I wanted to know about. Thank you
I really need to show more care and love to my herbs and vegetables. I have a tendency to let it over grow. But now that I just bought my Centurion pruner, that should make me ready!
I have been watching several of your videos as I prepare for my gardening season (in the Northeast). Can you share your tips on how to prune thyme, Parsley and Cilantro. My Parsley and Cilantro always seem to bold on me!
Hey Kevin. I started my own herb garden for the first time and I’m really enjoying it. So I’m glad I found your channel and I’ve enjoyed what I’ve watched so far. Can you do a video on natural ways to get rid off/prevent harmful pests and fungi for herbs?
Very much appreciated the specificity in word and demonstration. This level of detail is what I am looking for as a newbie gardener. I think there are a lot of newbies right now, so keep it coming.
Oh yes please... help with growing sage. I have no trouble with thyme oregano raspberries figs kale tomatoes a variety of peppers- I replant basil each year but ... sage and cilantro are my epic failures that don’t even last a single season or single harvest, my blueberries are suffering producing little fruit and my strawberries, well all gone but one producing one berry then green leaf season with nothing more 2 years in a row.
For chives, I planted a packet of seeds in the garden for a "chive patch" about 4 years ago. The second year it was out of control, and now about every month I just cut the entire patch down like mowing the grass. I get about 4 POUNDS of chives per cut, and by the next month or two they are right back to 20-24" tall. These days I just cut them all off and toss it in the compost pile, I have enough chives for 15 years and can pick fresh every day throughout the spring-fall months if I want. Definitely do not have to just cut the outer leaves, just plant 2 square foot patch and cut off anything you want.. you cant kill that stuff
Would you please consider making a video about the best way to harvest cilantro / koriander? After the first cut, my plants always die so my only way is harvest everything at once, where i would like to keep harvesting. Thanks, and keep up the wonderful instructive videos!
I lived in Western Washington for 6 yrs and my Chives would go wild. When they started to flower I would cut them back to the base and they continued to grow even better. I started them from seed for the first time. Starting new ones here in Northern CA. Hopefully they do as well.
Super helpful, even for someone who's been growing herbs for a while. I always learn something new. How about tackling parsley and chives? I'd be so appreciative.
Hi Kevin thank you for the video I would love to see printing tips to encourage growth for cilantro and parsley and thyme if you could thank you so much I haven't seen all of your videos so if you've already made these I will stumble upon them eventually hope you and the epic Garden are doing well thanks again
Great info! Just found this video! There isn't much information about how to properly prune chamomile, to get the best growth out of it. I would love a video about that. Thanks for the info!
Can you cover how you take care of herbs through fall and winter such as bringing it into the inside from the outside or something like that please or harvesting seeds/ Just sleep /be dormant through the winter and go back in spring

Can you go more in depth with pruning rosemary? I've heard that you shouldn't cut the hard woody stem because it won't grow from there so I'm confused exactly where and at what stage of growth I should be pruning the rosemary. Thanks! Your videos are always super helpful.
For chives, i just mow them down. I have a 10+ year old that I can't kill. And I have tried!! Broke it up this past winter, tossed a few clumps upside down in a pot and those are growing well. There is even moss growing on top soil top. Indestructible.
We let African Blue Basil bloom until it dies because the bees adore it. We don’t cook with it. We grow it for the bees. Our other Basils are trimmed regularly.
Please do a sage video! I bought a 12 pod hydroponics and need to know how to/when to harvest and prune. I'm starting out with white, black, and blue sage.
Thanks so much for this video - I've just been playing with growing from seeds in a hydroponics system, and moving them into a little greenhouse thing. I know I have a long way to go, but I've been encouraged by my Basil growth, and I'm excited that Rosemary is peeking up eventually. I'm learning now that maybe Rosemary isn't good in a hydroponics system, due to very wet roots? Either way, this is exciting, and I appreciated the video!

And Italian parsley + mint! Trying to maximize container garden.
@Debbie M I'm curious as well about thyme, and also sage.
I would like to see more info like this! Especially on parsley, dill and oregano
Shall do!
Epic Gardening * Is there a video for dill and basil ? They are the only two I can’t keep alive 🙁

Please show us how to prune:
Lemongrass
Oregano
Thyme
Cucumbers
🙏
You don't prune lemongrass, you pull the whole thing out because you can only eat the base part near the roots.
@@hanoianboy9562 this isn't true, you can use the whole plant, even the leaves
@@hanoianboy9562 actually you can also use the leaves - they're especially good in tea
