- From one of the best album titles of all time, "What were Once Vices Are Now Habits". Released as the 'a' side to the no. 1 hit "Black Water" in Nov 1974.
I've included song facts during the "bridge" of this video.
Funny how a song can take you back ,and you know exactly what you we're doing at that time,I love this song.
One of the best songs by this band and one of the best songs by a Band . It all works
They pick up each other’s phrases - such a tight band.
Loved this song since the first time I ever heard it back in 1974! One of, if not the best songs by the Doobie Brothers ever. The 70's was the best decade! No doubt!!!
This song was highly underrated. Have always loved it.
Great song, it brings me back in time.
Oh my,,,,,, i just went back to cry for my friends, who r gone now,but we had the best life had to offer, im happy knew them all😁😁😁
While in college, worked as a "red shirt" doing security at many New England concerts (Boston/MA, Cape Cod/MA, Springfield/MA, Hartford/CT, Providence/RI, Manchester/NH, and even a few in Albany/NY and Saratoga Springs/NY). Did three Doobie Brothers' concerts in Providence Civic Center-Sept. 10/1975, Springfield Civic Center-Oct. 28/1975; and at Boston Garden-Nov 1, 1975. From a purely musical aspect, I always felt that the Doobies was one of the best concerts to work. While all concerts have some semblance of trouble, because you can't mix booze, grass and hard drugs and not expect a few fights or some folks just passing out from all of that, and the incessant body heat that 18,000 folks will generate.
But, that said, I always loved doing Doobies concerts because there was just something about their tone, melodies and songs that relaxed folks. Not that they didn't do hard rock at times, but there was always something mellow in their songs, and the audience always seemed more relaxed than the audiences that I worked at other concerts.
Hauntingly beautiful..
My son is going through heartbreak now. Sent him this song
I think that’s a bit cruel
Omg !! Where is the time machine? I want to go back to the past .❤
Me too .. let me know when you find it

Me too! I loved them so much! Great time being a teen. 🎉
Great job Joe, thanks so much. My fav Doobies tune of all time, you did it great justice. Thanks so much, great memories
This takes me back to the great 70’s and my first boyfriend 🥲 at 14.
Just sent this to my 1st love, my 1st husband, my 4ever love, hoping we'll be back together soon and 4 good this time
1989- forever
I fell in love to this song in the mid-70s. We were together for 2-1/2 years. Out of the blue she broke up with me and I spent the next 39 years with a broken heart and failed marriages. I never knew why she left. Now I know, and we're married. It should have always been her but sometimes bad things happen in life.
@@axslinger99 so you got her back? I'm hoping it happens for us. Congrats
@@mrsspaceghost2722 Yes. Took a long time and we lost a lot of years but we'll get to grow old together.
@@axslinger99 so happy for you. Great story....
This song came out and reminds me of the summer when my first love broke up with me. It took all of 5 minutes maybe, and then she slipped away. I was devastated and that pain never quite left me. I saw her recently late in 2019 after 45 years. We chatted and I found out about her life...and tho she kept her beauty, her life was not great. I told her about mine (actually I’ve lived the American Dream), and I’m sure when we parted she thought about ‘what could have been.’ And you know, as great of a life I’ve had, I too thought for a little bit about what could have been for us. I told her sisters that she broke my heart when she left me, and one said ‘we all knew.’ That too hurt a bit. God, we never quite get over the first time we felt real love...and it slipped away. I’m lucky in that I did get true love twice.
Great tune..! Thank you for the great feelings I get from it. Memories!
That's interesting the radio stations pulled that song because of that line "my car is empty and the radio just seems to bring me down. It's also interesting that this was about a real life break up.
This song is like a melancholy version of Listen To The Music
So good! Thanks for uploading this video!
Good song!
Cool
I just stay in the 70's and 80's. Dress that way, eat that way, share and all Peace and love.
Dam read the info: Jilted X 2.... Classic piece 🎶 😎 #DoobieBrothers 🙇♀️ 🥀
I clearly remember being very annoyed that "Black Water" became the monster hit from this album because, in my opinion, it wasn't even nearly the best song from it.
From 2:50 to the end...pure magic!!
Is this a vinyl record? I Hear some static but no real pops and clicks. Pretty clean. Maybe if youse cleaned it w/ some Tight Bond two wood glue it would some even better. Thanks for the lyrics. 😜😍😘😃😀😉😚😙☺😎😄🙄🙃
Talk about censorship! Google got nothin' on radio! That's really interesting how they pulled this song from rotation in favor of "Black Water", which I found insufferable to listen to. That bracket of years from 74 through '77 is what I refer to as the "Ronald John" era.
totally agree with you Darren. I always liked the Doobies better pre Michael McDonald.
what is the Ronald John era?
there were so many tremendous songs that never got air play then, which is ironic cause this was the age of ' classic rock' but unless you were fortunate enough to live in area with a AOR station, which meant album oriented radio...they you could hear the deep cuts ,some which were better than the top 40 tunes, which was what radio stations all about..Even Queen had to fight their record company to get Bohemian rhapsody on the new record
I guess I was lucky as Los Angeles had a great station in the 1970s called KMET. I think it is the kind of station you are referring to. They never played top 40. That's where Dr. Demento show was based. They would play whole albums sometimes or 4 in a row by the artists and lots of diversity. Old Fleetwood Mac before Stevie Nick's and Lindsey Buckingham joined the band. And the background history on the artists was how I know so much trivia regarding music and reading hit parader.. It has stayed with me all this time. Love of the back story behind the music! At first it was hard for me to give up the familiar top 40 station. But KMET played the songs that not even the other FM stations played. FM no static at all...oops couldn't ' t help myself!! But when KMET went off the air, it was written up in the newspapers, because it was one of the last of it's kind, where the Dee Jay's had control over what was played. I live in Humboldt County in Northern California. We have an independent station here called KMUD. Very diverse..no top 40 and Dee Jay's play what they want. It's on the web. Check it out sometime. Many years I waited for another KMET to pop back up with different call letters but like Wolfman Jack...there will never be another...again. just so happy I had it for a while. Changed my life.
I miss the days when you never had to search for great music. It was everywhere. Nowadays, it's like finding a needle in a haystack. The Doobies are such a treat. So many fabulous songs!
Should have been No. 1 for Christs Sake!
Before Michael McDonald single-handedly ruined The Doobie Brothers
