Just to add with regard to leaving from the south of the map, you'll wind up better off in terms of access to the bigger part of ashlands when leaving from the center south of the map as opposed to the edges.

Hey there! Right now I'm just running lean. I have r2modman (the mod manager) running only bepinExPack, Configuration manager, and Pathfinder. Pathfinder (by Crystal) is the only mod impacting the game and that just increases the exploration radius that reveals the map(I feel the default is just... not great- particularly on a boat). I put a link to my updated mod install video in the description above.
Eventually I may enable farmgrid (and Jotunn- needed for farmgrid). We'll probably complete the biome with limited mods and then I'll fire up my EpicLoot playthrough and run with that to see how it compares.
