an interesting talking point could be GT8... Will they use the same PS4-era engine used in GTS/GT7 or build something new exclusively for PS5
The engine and online component was largely re-written for GT7 to allow for future developments. Catering for PS4 is holding back GT7 - not the engine. Before GT8 we'll probably have a PS5 Pro update for GT7. That could bring new tech features like in-game Ray Tracing.
PS4 hardware and software sales have largely ended. I wouldn't be surprised to see a PS5 only version of GT7. Sony are hot on remastering/remaking recent titles and could enable existing owners to upgrade for a small fee. Then again they may just continue with free updates that are PS5 only like GT Sophy.

What happened to all the drivers from the fia chsmpionship in 2020? Did any of them go on to make a career out of esports or racing IRL?
I'm very important to note that GT Sport also marked a reset point in the franchise in terms of tech.
Past GTs always had legacy code within the engine and feature set whereas GT Sport was, pardon the phrase, built from the ground up for next generation of consoles (not only PS4, but PS5 and beyond) seeing how they revamped everything from physics to rendering.
Hence why we saw a paultry number of vehicles as all of them (excluding VGT cars) were rebuilt and show very high fidelity even on GT7.
And it honestly was the right decision. If they were to launch GT Sport as GT7, things would've been much worse.

Loaning drivers is a thing.
Why wait until GT Sport went offline to play it? Say you work your way through a GT career mode gradually, over a number of years. (Don't ask me how many years into GT4 I am!) You know a server shutdown is inevitable, and could potentially wipe your progress. You're finally 'safe' now that it's not server-dependent!
For some, the online multiplayer is the main attraction. For me, it has occasional appeal, but the reality is that I have relatively few hours per week/month available for gaming, and I like to spend the majority of it playing single player. PS Plus will never be good value for money for me, since you pay per month/year and not per hour. As a result I'm not a PS Plus subscriber.
I actually checked eBay and CEX earlier today to see if I could pick up GT Sport super cheap.

GT7 is peaking right now, not dead.
GT7 was the best selling Sony 1st Party title on the January '24 PSN charts in both Europe and North America. What we will probably see is more targeted updates - some quiet months then something like Spec III or an Anniversary update.
