Oh man. I played from around late 1995 until I left for the Marine Corps in early 1999 (and all my cards got stolen while I was away), and remember that every white deck I played against had Serra Angel in it. Such an amazing card for the time, and just seeing the card takes me back to when I was 16 years old, and first started playing. I miss those days a lot.
My first thought was he got this idea from False Swipe. No hate, it's a good series and has a lot of potential in MTG for sure. Hope all's chill between the two creators.
my friend played back then with a gaea cradle elf deck and had 4 forests in his deck and 1 cradle... and his black discard deck had 14 swamps... "I didnt want to get too many lands". (yes he had a 5 drop lol)
all of the original big flying creatures were on the same level of imposing when we were kids. couldn't bolt any of these, couldn't incinerate any of these, had to pay huge to fireball them, had to go black to play terror (to which one of these was immune to), etc. if your opponent played one of them and you didn't have one yourself, you were pretty much screwed. keep in mind, casual "playground magic" usually revolved around commons and maybe some uncommons. you didn't see many rares back then. cards like these were a very big deal when someone played them. it's like royalty had just arrived. of course, this is all super irrelevant (since the video is about competitive magic), but it really brought back a lot of (mostly) fond memories.
This is a great idea for a new series about when doing a deep dive onto single cards not only gives a TON of potential content but also shows why certain cards were good and how the powercreep over time has caused them to fall off. Even more would be a history of cards that were okay/meh for a while but now are a staple in some decks.
Almost retired, but never forgotten! How many memories playing this winged lady in my old decks back in the days, either as the win condition after locking the opponent with Stasis or as the top curve in white wheenies decks. It is heartbreaking seeing her fall from grace, in these days of 1 mana 2/2 with haste, shock at etb, create a treasure everytime you attack (if you read this comment in 2 two years, I'm sure such creature will have been printed).
Excellent deep dive. I especially liked how you even talked about it in limited. As I was watching I thought how Serra Angel is a great example of how a statline (+keywords) can match up really well against what else is in a format. That's something which I think often gets overlooked in limited formats.
I love this new series idea, I don't think anyone is really focusing on this type of content and it's always great to look back at the past to learn about how we got to where we are today, looking at specific cards to see how they've done is a great new way to do that compared to the top 10 lists
@@NizzahonMagictop 10s will always be lovely, don't misunderstand, but this whole new format is particularly interesting to deeply understand both this game, alongside its mechanics, and how optimizations actually work. The latter is SO useful for both the competitive environment and another one format of yours: draft.
Serra Angel won me a game last Sunday. Me and some friends were playing a kitchen table Uncommons only version of modern. She's the big threat in my vigilance themed Selesnya deck.
That sounds like a lot of fun, but I'm amazed that everyone doesn't just play burn. I mean, you've got Lightning Bolt and Boros Charm, what else could you want?
Oh, very cool. Excited for this series. I'm an old player that's been around since the 90s and I remember using old cards like this, even though I mostly just played against my brother back then. The Deck was the first time I had started to hear about achetypes of decks and I just figured it was because I finally had people around me that started to play. A lot of my friends didn't start getting into Magic until Ice Age had released and the cards were easier to find in my area.
Can't wait to see more of this series! I've heard of a lot of the older/original cards but I don't really know their history. Thank you for your dedication to this amazing game NH!
Was completely on board when you asked out about the series concept, and now, even more so. Absolutely keep doing this. It feels like a logical complement to Top 10s and will help you keep those more impactful/unique for when they do land in your schedule. Obviously many more "historic" cards to cover first, but my mono W is showing and I cant wait for the Thraben Inspector video.
As a relatively new player (started in 2018 during guilds of ravnica) this series is amazing. I love learning about the history of the game and iconic cards and would love to see this series continue
Huge fan of the new series ngl, in my opinion you're the premier magic history channel. These videos combine two of my favorite things, mtg, and documentaries. These are fire.
I really like this as something else in the vein of Deck History and B&R, a different angle to look at the history and development of the meta. Hope to see more
Very interesting! I look forward to future instalments. Shout-out to Serra Angel for also leading to a bunch of other Serra-related cards and story elements
Perfect idea for a series. Also please keep it based mainly on creatures. It's a way different topic (and IMO more interesting) than one generically about win-conditions. If you e.g. do a video about Lightning Bolt, the script is almost indistinguishable from a script about the history of Burn decks in general.
Good stuff I enjoyed it. I still remember my excitement back in the late 90's when I finally managed to complete a playset of Serra's for my silly four color big flyers deck
This seems to fit with your history professor vibes better than the top tens. You really get to dive into specific card histories in a way the top ten format doesn't allow. Thumbs up!
I remember fearing this card when I first started playing around the time of Tempest. She was still one of the most powerful creatures in the game at that time. Can’t wait to see more of this series in the future, it’s going to bring back some great memories of my teenage years.
Love it. Thank you so much for the new style content. It would be cool if when you were talking about the older decks that the card was involved with you talked about more of the single cards in that deck so we get a better feeling of the big picture.
I really enjoyed the more long-form video essay format, and the topic was fun too. It feels like you won't run out of interesting cards to talk about for a while
I would like to see more in this series. I'm always on board with deep dives of classic cards and decks. Serra Angel still sees the board on my side of the table, whether it's in my Commander deck or used as an Angel token for Resplendent Angel, and of course I only used the original art printings.
Seems like a great start to a cool series. It'll be nice to see cards from different era's of Magics history. We could look back at cards like Progenitus and Jace the Mind Sculptor. Cards that were the top of their game but aren't in the spotlight as much today.
It's May the 1st, 2024 and as I woke up to take a piss at 2 am, I saw that Nizzahon had new content! 🥹 I said to myself, "I really need to sleep so I'll save this for work tomorrow..." As I sit on my exercise ball while eating lunch at home, (I work remotely) I am enjoying this clip that pertains to one of Magic's most iconic creatures. 🤝👍 I'm already subbed to this channel and always eagerly await to watch the new content when I'm in a comfortable place but this clip easily earned the signature, "LIKE." 👍👍👍🤝 Great editing skills too Nizzahon.. 👌
I like the start of this series! I love seeing old pro tour decklists so I wouldn’t mind if you included even more of them and maybe even clips of pro tour coverage if it exists
Awesome concept for video. I like your top 10 videos, but also missing deck history videos. ..and this type hits that history-nostalgia spot just right. 😊
I enjoyed this series and would definitely watch more episodes like this. :) I like that you pointed out Serra Angel, even though it would absolutely never see play in Constructed today, was still a powerful card in Dominaria Limited. Makes me wonder what other iconic cards from the game's past could still be fun limited role players. I think Serra Angel probably actually holds up a lot better than Erhnam Djinn would in a contemporary Limited environment.
Love your content already and this will make it even better! You are easily one of the best MTG channels out there. Can't wait to see what cards you'll cover next.
would definitely be interested in more of this. i'm curious as to how you'd handle cards with really expansive histories (lightning bolt comes to mind), since your (non-limited-focused) videos are usually under 20 minutes. regardless, excited for more.
A cool idea for a series would be to go through the history of each format and determine what card got the most points in that year, excluding basic lands. So like for modern, you start with the first year, then you count all the modern events from that year and determine which card showed up most often. That would probably be pretty cool.
Big fan of this idea! Getting a deep look into specific cards and what makes them iconic/good sounds mad interesting (also you won't be running out of ideas anytime soon either lol)

Haha, as a big fan of False Swipe Gaming, I find that very cheeky but very fitting. Magic does have its own tiers after all.
It's missing the song tho

This series is going to be pretty sweet. Seeing the deck lists from back in the day makes me realise how unhinged mana bases were.
That first decklist: 15 lands, no basics, 5 Moxen o_O
my friend played back then with a gaea cradle elf deck and had 4 forests in his deck and 1 cradle... and his black discard deck had 14 swamps... "I didnt want to get too many lands". (yes he had a 5 drop lol)

Appreciate you schooling the kids on just how good this card was and the importance of power creep
I appreciate that Nizzahon has become the History Channel for Mtg. I WILL watch videos like this
The background is the Best Serra Angel artwork! Or at the very least, my favorite!
I used to play a mono blue where air elemental was the win con. 4/4 flyers used to do a lot of work.
Mahamoti Djinn. 😂
We gotta get more of this series!
The mention of Blastoderm makes me want to see a video on that card in this series
I do enjoy in March of machines we got the evolving spinoderm a nice nod to it
Oh mannn Blastoderm takes me back to the only time I played paper Type 2! FIRES OF YAVIMAYAAAA
Good call. Blastoderm was the peak of its day.

She can still get wins, even if she isn’t the most efficient
