    When shooting in crop mode, you reduce the field of view but your focal length remains unchanged. To get an equivalent field of view, you would have to place the camera further away from the subject. As the distance to the subject increases your depth of field increases (exponentially) thus the extra sharpness could be a function of the lens and not the camera. Google "depth of field formula" to see the formula.
    Compensating for this can be done in several ways but each would introduce further basis in your testing.
    - Use a different lens to get an approximately equivalent depth of field
    - Shoot at the same distance from the subject and crop (don't zoom) the portion of the frame that is similar. Then compare the same portion of the frame.
    Otherwise, an interesting argument but the comparative cost difference of full frame vs APSC still makes the A7IV a VERY expensive APSC camera - you might be better off with the a6XXX series.
    Keep up the work!

    • @JonathanPalfrey

      Yeah the lens crop could be making the difference, although I do think for HD there is a noticeable difference between crop and full frame, it’s not noticeable when comparing 4K images.
      I still think the A7iv offers a lot over a A6600 series camera. Better colour science, autofocus frame rates and codecs not to mention you can shoot full frame photos and video when you need to.
      The FX30 might change that a bit however it looks like it will be priced in line with the A7iv

    I think what 4k crop mode has an advantage of against hd crop mode is about resolution. Looking at the two footages at the same small scale display will most likely not show any differences but if you play the 1080 footage on a larger scaled display/monitor, the 4k will always win. But having this hd crop mode is still a good option in some cases.

    Fantastic video Jonathan! Thank you for your effort you put in. I honestly thought about getting an FX30 for the 120fps in 4K. But now I think that I'm more than happy with the HD crop in terms of sharpness. I even think about getting the Sony 11mm 1.8 + 16-55 2.8 G (both exceptional sharp lenses) and see the A7IV as a crop-cam with ff-potential (depth-of-field e.g.) whenever I need it. I have to do some real-estate-jobs soon and I think the HD-crop-mode + the 11mm 1.8 is the perfect combo for that! Greetings from Germany!

  • @gadgetphilosophy8290

    I previously owned the fx3. I’ve now got the a7iv. I think the HD image of the a7iv is on par with the 4K image from the fx3. Further to that as you know the 4K 25p on the a7iv is of the charts for sharpness. I’d apart from the shallow depth of field in crop mode I see no advantages to the Fx3. As a bonus I bet shoot*ng in hd crop mode would eliminate any fears of overheating. ( I’m guessing- I haven’t checked) thanks for the video.

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  2 роки тому +2

      Yes the A7iv is crazy sharp in 4K 25p.
      4K 120p, no crop and the fan are really the only advantages the FX3 has, I find that just about worth it for myself however can totally see it's not needed for alot of people.
      Shooting HD does seem to solve the overheating.
      Just a thought, imagine if they released a FX version of the A7iv, basically adding the fan and xlr. That would be an awesome affordable camera.

    I really like your video and the effort you put into it.
    There is a thing, at least in my case.
    I tend to mix my FX 9 hd (cinetone) with my A7iv (also hd cinetone) and it matches really well. I like the softer, cinematic look and personally the shots don't need to be as crisp as a small sensor phonecamera.
    I guess you could add a bit of sharpness in post if needed.
    But good to know that there is a way to create even sharper image with the A7iv.
    It might be a Sony thing by the way. On the FX9 the slightly cropped 5k fullframe readout is also better/more sharp than the no cropped 2k ff.

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  2 роки тому +1

      That's an interesting thought. I guess there would be less focus points as your zoomed in so perhaps there's a compromise on autofocus.
      Overheating should be less of a concern you'd hope as you're using less of the sensor. That said I don't know if the rest of the sensor 'turns off' when in crop mode.

    What setting do you use to get better quality full hd 120 FPS video? I really don’t see a quality improvement on my a7 iv footage when it comes to 120p APS-C mode, although there is a mass quality improvement for full hd 30 and 60 frames.

    Useless videos like these makes me so angry. If you don't specify how much sharpening is applied in your PP then it's useless. For this test to have any meaning you'd need to make sure that the sharpening is set to -7. Otherwise the improvement we're seeing could just be that the cropped mode applies the sharpening differently.

    Good info. I do feel, however, we lose perspective (pun intended) on this issue. If absolute clarity of image is the goal, then this discussion is valuable. However, if one is telling a visual story, then the differences in images as presented here are not noteworthy. In other words, a quite good image is enough for many, if not most, situations.

    I'm looking at moving up to this camera from the A6600 because the 1080 crop is so much better than the 1080 on the A6600. I stopped shooting 4k for run and gun because the rolling shutter makes it impossible to stabilize some shots but 1080 is way to soft on the A6600 so it's time for a new camera. I'll either shoot the a74 in crop or get the a7s3 but the a74 would save me $1000 as well as the cost of new lenses.
    My question is, can I use my crop lenses? They're cheaper and offer a wider range of focal lengths so id like to use them and run it as a crop sensor video camera.

    I am curious what Sony did with the 1080HD Crop Mode on the Sony A74. What processor magic did they do. I wonder if they will do a firmware update where that sauce will transfer to the 1080HD full frame mode

    • @JonathanPalfrey
      @JonathanPalfrey  Рік тому +3

      I don't think it's any magic, just the downscaling compared to line skipping.
      The A7iv isn't able to read the full sensor fast enough for 60p, hence the crop in 4K. I'd imagine the only reason it works in 1080 is because it's line skipping, hence the softer image. When shooting cropped 1080 its probably taking the full 4K read out and then downscaling hence the sharper image.
