    Josh, you really know your stuff man. Thank you. What I love about videos like this is, they provide answers which then allow me to think about other (preferably creative) things. In other words, while I'm shooting, instead of going back-and-forth on what I THINK are the tradeoffs associated with a given setup, I can move forward KNOWING the tradeoffs. Thanks again.

    Been traversing all of your A74 content now that I finally got one in hand! Loving all of it! I've been playing with using the digital zoom mode in camera instead of clear image zoom. I feel like digital zoom gives you a similar result to just cropping in post, which is nice because you retain the noise performance of the full-frame image. The clear image zoom is downsampling whatever portion of the sensor you're using, which is excellent, but you're oversampling a lot less than 7k as you zoom in, so the noise removal seems to deprecate. Another benefit to using digital zoom is you can go up to 4x in 4k. Because of the 7k oversample, 4k at 4x digital zoom looks surprisingly excellent, and the noise seems less than with clear image zoom. Have you messed with the digital zoom at all? I know it sounds like the worse option, but I'm really impressed!

    But! If you crop in post you'll be stretching 4K footage to fit a 4K timeline eventually losing sharpness, or benefit a little from oversampling when fitting an FHD timeline. On the other hand if you shoot in crop mode you get 4K footage out of camera, which you dont have to stretch further to fit the 4K timeline, and you benefit immensely if you downscale to 2K or FHD timeline! So Id say cropping in camera allows more flexibility in post... this approach works well for anamorphic footage.
    Surprised to see that clear zoom is acually useful and not just a marketing term for variable crop factor XDD
    Great job of comparing all the modes! Thank you!

    What a great video. Thank you so much. I am shooting the A7Rv and have been experimenting with the Clear Image Zoom. I noted that you can't use Clear Image Zoom with RAW in stills so I was forced to go to Jpeg. This is not a problem if your product will go to the internet, but is not (for me) acceptable for print production. I do like having the Clear Image Zoom option available to me but with your video, I have a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of using it and using crop mode. Thanks again!

I would say that the auto focus will be still excellent but what about the ISO noise? Up to which ISO crop mode is usable?

    This was useful, thank you. Confirms my decision to get the A7CII over the IV since it has all of the AF features intact in CIZ (along with LUT support, AI, etc.). It's also satisfying hearing others talk about hacks for added reach lol. My wonkiest is using 4K30fps mode on the A7III with the APS-C Sigma 16mm in full frame mode because the 1.2x crop is just enough to remove the vignetting, giving you a 19mm lens for video with extra detail over the Super 35mm 24mm lol.

    Sony Clear Image Zoom is actually a function of the sensor readout. Sony developed a live, "sliding" sensor read crop. It's not exactly a "zoom"...its really a dynamically crop that opens and closes as it does it's sensor readout. The A/D converters are processing the raw RGGB scaling and it outputs the raw sensor data in 4k. This way, the image processor does not have to do any of that work. Using Clear Image Zoom in full frame at 1.5x crops to to an APS-C sensor read. Doing it in APS-C puts the read into MFT sensor territory. So yeah...its a dynamically changing, live moving sensor crop done on chip.

    • @nightdonutstudio
      @nightdonutstudio 2 роки тому

      I am more confused. But the it need to have that pixel to work with? A7sIII only have 12mp, but it can still use clear image zoom to simulate apsc mode.. and the result again is similar to full frame mode. But how do sony do that. There is no extra pixel for a7sIII to zoom in while doing clear image zoom.

    SO helpful dude to a noob (and clearly even experienced owners didn’t know a lot of this). Here’s what I was thinking of doing for my first lens:
    For my close up product review videos, I’m going to upgrade from my iPhone 13 Pro but want to keep the perspective the same. My table is only 1 size. Also need this for live streaming and future talking heads. So I’ve decided on Sony a7iv.
    I might end up needing 24-28mm range so I was considering the Sigma 16-28 HOWEVER I LOVE the look and focus speed of Sony glass. So I was planning on just getting Sony 20mm G and using clear image zoom to get to 24-28 if needed.
    But after watching your video I’m not sure that’s the best route. Although they say zoom lenses are not as sharp. I want the sharpness. I guess it’s just a tug of war between a Sigma zooming in that’s not as sharp to begin with, vs a sharp Sony losing sharpness due to cropping in. I really can’t afford noise though. But if we are only talking 20-28mm would it really add noise? Not to mention I will be in a studio so I can supply lighting as needed.
    I dunno man. What do you think of all this? I would love any input. You sound like you really know your stuff.
    I was under the impression that since we have a 7k sensor, the camera downsamples to 4k anyway, so it wouldn’t make a single difference if we were cropped or not cuz it’s all going down to 4k. Maybe that’s not quite accurate info though.

    Haha I was about to do a video on this this afternoon!
    Interesting about the noise, I wonder if there's just more noise reduction going on with clear image zoom v crop.
    One thing I was going to test was rolling shutter, and whether it's better in crop. Also if HD is better quality in crop v full frame which I found was quite soft.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 роки тому

      The noise in crop mode has to do with it reading out from a small sensor. Please check out my video that I mentioned about crop sensors. I don't think there is any additional noise reduction going on with clear image zoom because the noise looks similar when using clear image zoom vs zooming in post.

    The comparison, I needed...great video! I have been thinking what 20mm-ish budget lens should I buy for Vlogging and Travel videos on my FX3 and A7IV. This video just kind of take the APSC lens ideas I have completely out go my list... I was originally thinking to get either a Sony 11mm f1.8 or a Viltrox 13mm f1.4 and use it in crop mode for video. Unfortunately none of these lenses would be good for photos (astro) since the crop mode in photo drops the quality to 14mp (A7IV). So now I am back where I started my shopping cart and I am looking at the Sony 20mm f1.8 or the Viltrox 24mm F1.8 for only $379!!! I own the Sony GM 16-35 f2.8 which is one of my favorite, but its more like a video project beast not a vlogging/walk around lens on a trip since its heavy. What would be your suggestion Josh for 20-24mm? I also own the Sony GM 35 f1.4 so I don't think so I would get a 24 GM.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Рік тому

      I personally like 20mm on a full frame camera a lot for vlogging and filming myself. I tend to just use a wide zoom (16-35) most of the time, but if I were to get a smaller, lighter, wide prime lens for Sony full frame, I would get the 20mm 1.8.

    Very interesting video. However as all the images in this test were jpg....... In your opinion is there any difference to image quality to be had showing in RAW? While crop mode is possible in RAW clear image zoom is not....which is a real pity, How would a jpg shot with CIZ and crop mode compare to a RAW shot in crop mode and resized using some AI method in post.It may be splitting hair but it would be interesting to know your thoughts.

    Although crop-mode and CIZ might not affect exposure when the exposure triangle is locked-off in manual mode, wouldn't crop-mode, at least, affect the light metering if, say, I were to be shooting photos in Aperture priority with crop mode? 🤔

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Рік тому

      Sensor size does not effect exposure. Exposure is determined by aperture, ISO and shutter speed. Check out this video where I cover everything about crop sensors: ua-cam.com/video/Qcdtq3N6yQI/v-deo.html

      @@Josh_Sattin To clarify, in my original comment, I did not say that sensor size/crop affected exposure. My question was about metering calculations

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Рік тому +1

      Sensor size or crop mode will not effect the exposure. When you use crop mode, the things that effect the exposure (ISO, shutter speed and aperture) do not change. The camera will still meter the exposure the same way. Please check out this video. It will answer your questions: ua-cam.com/video/Qcdtq3N6yQI/v-deo.html

    Oh WOW. All these lens reviews and comments you see say “But you can just use Super 35 mode and now you basically have a 50mm lens”. Doesn’t seem to be the case does it? I know we are pixel peeping but I mean when you’re cropping in at parts in post like I do, it’s gonna be important.

      4k60 on Sony A7IV automatically uses Super 35. So u can just add clear image zoom on that. If you use active stabilization it will ad another like 1.1x or 1.2x crop.

    Hi. What about Crop mode for still images?. How many mega pixels does shoot in while in Dx mode?.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 роки тому

      I think it would be around 14.67 megapixels in crop mode. It is a 1.5x crop so full frame would be 2.25x the area.
      33 / 2.25 = 14.67

    crop has a bit faster readout speed, if you want to reduce the rolling shutter effect. just as an another factor in favor of crop mode.
    also did few tests of my own and concluded that digital zoom is not worth using beyond clear image zoom as opposed to zooming-in in post. that would be at 4k60 crop mode with active stabe on. would you concur?
    im trying just get as much reach from my lens as possible. Also i found out that there ar no benefit in using FHD with digital zoom as opposed to 4k+ clear image zoom + zooming-in in post.
    I wish sony would just give a "zoom" feature that would go seamlessi from 1x no crop to crop+ clearimage zoom. and also a setting with 1:1 readout at 4k and fhd. that would just eliminate all the questions... and its firmware doable. also raw video at 1:1. lol.

    I don't get it. Why would you be using those various "magnifying" options on a wide field of view, when you could just zoom in optically. One USES those options when one needs to "zoom" in further than your longest focal length. For instance Birding/Wildlife with a longer lens, when one needs to get in tighter. There ... since one has to use Jpegs to get Clear zoom ... the big negative is loss of fine detail ... say in Bird feathers. Jpegs typically smear that very fine detail, making the Clear option less than useful. I AM looking forward to trying it out with my 500, in Crop mode, plus Clear Zoom, with my Sony A1 ...

    Alot said, however I do not see any major difference in all of these settings until you start pixel peeping, so I guess your investigation was thorough, however reveals no real objective difference between all of the settings, unless you have microscopic superman vision. In that case alot of these settings being added to the sony menues really adds nothing to the cameras ability to take photos, but would add so many pages to the camera manual that it would be cost prohibitive to add one in the box with the cameras when purchased.... oh, thats right, they don't included physical manuals anymore do they...
