      Basically Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were brainstorming one night, and Eastman drew a short squat Turtle wielding nunchucks. Laird thought it was funny that slow clumsy animal like a turtle could be a ninja. So they decided to run with the idea, put some Daredevil parody in it, and that first issue sold like gangbusters. Then just kept having fun with, it’s dark gritty, while same some completely wacky with killer robots, mutants, aliens, time travel, etc. and the rest is history.

    I will disagree with Tom on a few points:
    1.) Uppercuts typically have large vertical and forward hit boxes to function as anti-airs. So naturally it stands to reason uppercut will beat a dive kick. I agree there should be a trade but you shouldn't win outright, that isn't how anti-airs in beat em ups and fighting games work.
    2.) Dodging with the dodge button isn't the only way to avoid damage. Your super gives you full invincibility for the duration. You use your super to not only avoid damage, but dish it out in return. You can cancel most attacks into supers.
    3.) Vertical enemies aren't that big of an issue in most stages, the only issue are the auto scrolling stages usually due to foreground art assets or a lot of visual clutter. You are certainly right in your criticism that it is a tad difficult to figure it out at a casual level, but even your average player should be able to discern fairly easily most flying enemies.
    Your criticisms are valid but some of it does seem to be what I am assuming to be forgetful of other mechanics even if they exist in multiple game genres.
    At least this is my take on it.

    • @maxsayo
      @maxsayo 2 роки тому +8

      I was actually writing something up like this but saw your comment. I used dodge rolls liberally during my combos in order to get out of the way and beat those no hit challenges. And just spamming the jump attack move on the flying enemies kills them quickly and in one hit.
      I think the only enemy I have a complaint with are the giant mousers because their chomp grab has little to no wind up so you get caught very easily.
      I feel a couple of the criticisms were not invalid but just have come from misunderstanding like you said.

    • @Jedda678
      @Jedda678 2 роки тому +7

      @@maxsayo yeah and it does feel cheap at times when the AI hits you, and he isn't wrong there isn't a lot of visual indication in some attacks but for the most part you have enough time to make a split second decision to attack or dodge. It also depends on the difficulty, at hard the AI is more aggressive and more prone to input reading.

      I agree with this too.
      My usual strategy is just to jump.
      Also I feel like some of the other hotbox criticism comes from the fact that a lot of this is carryover from the original TMNT games which were known for being insanely difficult even on easy mode.

      I generally agree with what you say here, too. The flying enemies all have clear indication of where they're flying above, the only annoying part with them is maybe timing your jump attacks or getting rid of them quickly (like the helicopters). But otherwise they're not hard to deal with, either use a super or just the springing jump attack. And usually the worst thing for me is when you accidentally dodge into an attack. I've personally loved the game myself, been playing it a lot with various different friends to experience it with them especially. One of those things I've always wanted to play with people but never could before.

    I don't know if they added any homage for James Avery being Shredder's voice actor from the original 1987 cartoon (Rest his soul), but if they didn't, I would of loved if they had some of the background businesses be named after his roles.

    As someone who was born in 82' and grew up with these guys. Playing the game with my brothers online now that we are older reminds me of when we use to play Turtles 2 and Turtles in Time on the Arcade in our garage. ( Father was an arcade collector with 4 boys.) While playing I was hit with nostalgia the who time........... but something, something about the mall stage and the music hit me so hard I had to pause cause I almost started to cry cause of the huge train of emotions from my past being a latch-key kid in the 80's and 90's with my brothers. This ......... This is a true Turtles game and I could not be more proud of the developers.

    0:10 The 1984 TMNT comic book was "pitched" satirically, much like Dragon Ball was a satire of its respective genre. The whole thing was a joke, spoofing Marvel's daredevil comics.
    The 1987 cartoon was an unironic cash grab around the memorabilia and toys.
    If you care, the IDW comics in recent years take the content pretty serious and tell a great story. Other than the 1990 movie, it's the best iteration. I love the turtles, even if there aren't many great representations of them, in my opinion.

    • @TheEman590
      @TheEman590 2 роки тому +1

      I don't know if I'd say completely unironic. In fact, it almost felt like a parody of the toy based shows of the decade. They just as often broke the fourth wall as they did making fun of the retro catapult. As if to say, "Yeah, we're a sci-fi B movie, but at least we recognize the camp unlike Transformers or Thundercats or SilverHawks." That being said, the marketing did its job and it was inescapable like Real Ghostbusters or Garfield Cat. Ninja Turtles merch and clothes everywhere until Power Rangers came along and kicked their shells. Then the Pokemon craze took over. Praise for the 2003 cartoon after a 5 year break.

    Unlike Sonic Mania; though It may have family and nostalgic stages but these guys did the Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time treatment and weren't too afraid to truly be faithful to both the orignal show and Turtles In Time. I played the old games with 2 of my friends when we were kids, and somehow we were able to catch up and make time to play Shredder's Revenge together on Steam. We were able to beat the game on our first run (over a few days), but the two of us who are generally very good at games found normal difficulty pretty easy, while the friend who is more casual had a lot of difficulty with "depth perception," especially regarding flying enemies. The trick is to keep track of your shadow/board relative to your enemies' shadows/boards. Also, I was playing as April at first, and found her to be much better at hitting airborne enemies with her rising and dropping attacks than other characters that I tried.

    Got this game for a friend of mine so we can coop it. We both loved SOR4 and still pop into its "roguelite" missions from time to time, so this is right up our alley. I did notice what was stated here though - the minimal tells and the super armor bosses have that make them less enjoyable to fight. When I saw one of the achievements is "Not getting hit", I immediately knew trying to do that would be a real chore because of this.
    SOR4's bosses had minimal super armor. They only tended to have them during special attacks, and said attacks had enough wind up to allow you to dodge or move out of the way if you aren't being greedy. There was one boss that had near constant super armor, and he's labeled as the least fun one to fight (at least in my circle of friends). In Shredder's Revenge though, all the bosses (that I've fought so far) are like that one boss in SOR4. You can't really be strategically aggressive. As a youtuber named Jontron once said: "You gotta touch em a little and go!" which isn't as fun as slipping in between a boss' defenses and being rewarded with a combo opportunity like you can do in SOR4.
    But these are just simply negatives that shave off 1 or 2 points from a 10/10 game. I love it so far and it'll be ultra fun to coop it regardless.

    • @TheGreyTurtleEntertainment
      @TheGreyTurtleEntertainment 2 роки тому +2

      The minimal tells and super armor are carryovers from the original TMNT games.
      Theyre intentional the Konami TMNT games are known for being insanely hard.
      Like the original TMNT games are what introduced the insanely difficult water level trope.
      The boss tells and hit boxes were never in the originals and it's weird that it was carried over, but it feels like this was done more as a nostalgia thing than anything else.

      @@TheGreyTurtleEntertainment Yeah I've played the older TMNT games and they do have that similarity. It's one thing I never liked about them. At the end of the day it's more of a personal opinion about game design. Are you into being aggressive or defensive? Aggressive = SOR style, Defensive = TMNT style.

    • @TheGreyTurtleEntertainment
      @TheGreyTurtleEntertainment 2 роки тому +3

      @@soulechelon2643 I agree, I genuinely feel that most of the videos criticism comes off as missing the point that the difficulty is more or less nostalgia for nostalgias sake.
      I do think that it's something that could have been updated to make it more modern, because I agree with you that some of it is unecessary and didn't need to be brought over.
      However, knowing how fanboys can be (and speaking as one myself) I know someone would have complained loudly had those elements not been brought over.
      But why anyone would want it brought over.... Idk, but either way ya slice it, it's an amazing play, even with it's faults (I'm just glad they wisely didn't include a water level)

Tee Lopes and the sound design team all deserve a lot of credit for all of the sound and music in here because it's amazing, and hitting things sounds so satisfying. Plus the voice acting is really good, a lot of fun dialogue and funny reactions to situations you can find yourself caught in. All the detail with the enemies and players' animations is also so cool, everything is so brimming with personality. For what it's worth, In Japan, these kind of beat-em-ups with this type of tilted camera and z-axis movement are called "belt-scrolling" action games, a goofy way of comparing it's movement to something more akin to a conveyer belt.
    Also, Tom! Speaking of belt-scrollers, there was another beat-em-up that was released at the time as Shredder's Revenge; a more conventional but amazing-feeling beat-em-up called Final Vendetta. My family got this game just a while ago, and I we LOVED it! My little brother especially enjoyed it and has replayed it at least 4-5 times now. We even ordered pizza half way through playing lol. 😂 🍕
    I do agree that the vertical enemies were a huge pain and was probably the most frustrating part for me. Personally, I was not around for the OG ninja turtles, but I still got a bunch of the references (my dad got more of them than me though).
    Super fun. 10/10 would play again! 👍

    While it's cool and all, it's kinda surprising there's still so much stuff being made for a show that frankly doesn't hold up too well. Kinda wish the better shows from the franchise got more love in the game department.

      That's exactly what I've been thinking, would've made for a good expansion to this game (though the devs have confirmed that there won't be DLC). But really a "Turtles Forever 2" anything would be cool, whether it be a game, comic, or movie.

    I will admit that dodging took me a while to master, but once I got the hang of it I didn’t have much issue. I honestly don’t have any issue with the enemy tells. There are definitely frustrating bits but I never found obstacles that felt utterly insurmountable… except for the dinosaur stage. That stage can go right to hell.

    The game looks really nice.... But I kinda hate side scrolling beat em ups....
    And I think I'd need some assist/accessibility options that directly affect the core mechanics of the game.... Like maybe something that highlights which enemies are on the same plain as me so I know I'm going to hit them for sure.... Less enemies at once and more indicators of where and when they're going to attack so it's easier to avoid attacks.... And modifying how much damage I do and take...

    I mean the whole series was based on what was basically a joke. artists sitting around saying "What is the most ridiculous idea we can come up with" so they took a fast thing and put it on a slow thing just for fun. Then they made a comic and then some one saw the comic said "Lets make some changes and do a cartoon"

    • @dannydumlet

      also the point of the uppercut attack is so you DON'T spam the flying kick like how that was the GOD move of the OG turtles games. Though it does over prioritize all attacks. So what happens sometimes is one may be trying to uppercut another player in 2 or more players and you get hit. Also the issue you are having with the dodge sounds more like...to be blunt you are spamming it. Also the tells are honestly pretty good...I kinda wonder if you guys are spamming
