My main issue with Illumination is their potential. The cut Biggering song alone proves there’s some real talent desperately trying to express themselves through film. But the higher-ups are bastards.
My dad unironically loves Minions. I myself am an animation history buff, love studying it, etc. It pained me at first, but he genuinely derives so much joy from these lil banana fuckers that I will never criticize minions in front of him. I plan to buy him a Kevin plush for Christmas this year 😂
Minions: Rise of Gru is truly one of the movies ever. The script is written, the plot is there, the characters are acted. I even shed a tear when Gru said “I’m gonna gruin this man’s whole career.” One of my movies of all time
My main criticism with "kids movies" is that they tend to not challenge kids. Their narrative is very simple, to the point where it is all taken in without questions. Kids aren't dumb, they just need to learn. Films like this rarely contribute anything noteworthy to that, and tend to treat kids like idiots, instead of building on their potential. Citizen Kane is at the other end of the extreme, and wouldn't help, either. Something as simple as the "Lego Movie" does it better, by challenging ideas and concepts in slightly subtle ways, requiring kids to ask themselves a few simple questions, for which they get the answers later in the film.
I think kids and adults alike should be allowed to have entertainment that is designed for fun, not to challenge them. I see this kinda mindset in the fanfic community alot. People seem to think that there always needs to be a higher level for things to have value. Yes, there should be movies directed at kids that challenge them. Having kids learn through media is important, but I just also think sometimes it's ok to have a movie night where you eat popcorn and laugh at stupid humor and play. Play is so important for all ages. I hate that society thinks play is something childish that needs to be outgrown when time and time again it's proven to releave stress and make people happy. There's more to life than productivity. It's ok to relax and have fun in a way that's not designed to challenge you. Just, mix it in with the other stuff so it's not all you're getting.
I mean there are plenty of options out there, from new to old. Honestly it’s not worth worrying about what other children enjoy watching. Just worry about your tastes and maybe your own kids (not trying to be rude nor mean). I’m just saying it’s not worth the stress, don’t even bother watching the movie and don’t show them to your own kids. That’s what I do with my own students. Also if the movie is boring or just very crappy they usually loose interest anyways. Also I just straight up tell them. “Eh it’s a boring movie it’s not going be fun, or I don’t have it” lol
@@foxinasweater2300 It's ironic that previously the idea was that parents trusted television to raise their kids, but now it seems people don't trust parents to do that, which is why they rely so much on tv to do that.
Agreed. That’s why whenever I buy my sister video games, I never buy her “kids games”, I always buy her things like Undertale, Final Fantasy 2, Earthbound, Clock Tower, Chrono Trigger, Outlast, etc. the type of thought provoking shit that made me the writing genius I am today.
this movie seemed like a huge missed opportunity to explore young Gru, his relationship with his mom, and an introduction to his insecurities that he would later face and grow from as an adult
agreed -- definitely a missed opportunity. A bit like the first minions, a lot of this film felt so safe and undeveloped. There's so much to explore with this character.
I mean the movie was serviceable, it was honestly pretty wholesome and fun. The Illumination animation style always looks good, and seeing all the references to past minions films and overall pop culture was a bonus. It’s a 6/10 for me and it honestly is just a fun movie.
Even if it's just "a harmless fun kids movie" I still think critiques and reviews are a good thing because it keeps the studios from becoming lazy and generic (even if Illumination seems to be past this in all aspects of the word) there is nothing wrong with giving your thoughts on something. A critique does not have to be a bash, it is a chance to show where improvement might be able to come and make something great amazing. So don't beat yourself up too bad, Saber, if you have some opinions then don't be afraid to share them!
I always like to make the argument of: Will kids remember this like we remember our movies? And I really don't think they will. Shrek, Toy Story, How To Train Your Dragon, etc. They are movies that stick with people for a long ass time because they stood out to them, and were original. To the point that many still watch them again as adults. However I highly doubt anyone's going to watch Minions: The Rise of Gru, or Sing, with their mates in ten or twenty years time, with that being the movie they remember loving as a kid. I'd even go beyond kids animation and point to some of the newer Starwars and MCU movies. Will they be remembered over time? And the answer is usually no. They're safe. They go for basic entertainment. But that kind of stuff doesn't stick with people. Honestly it's kind of mindless.
@@pagatryx5451 I'd have to disagree to a certain point - sure they might not be a cultural milestone for a wide audience in the future, but a lot of people have An Obscure Cartoon they watched as a kid on repeat. So yeah, they may not have a broad appeal, but still have a fond place in nostalgia. and I'm sure not many people "gather with their mates" to watch The Little Mermaid either way, so, eh. It's a specific ecological niche, but it's a niche.
@@pagatryx5451 I agree. It's so good when you look back at your childhood movies and share it whith the next generation. But I think most people would rather see Lion king in their memories than something like Renny the fox or Hop. These kind of movies usually fade away because no one would be proud of watching them. Sometimes they can have a small following that like it because it's nostalgic for them, but that's not much.
With all the memes aside, I thought the movie was… better than most Illumination movies. That isn’t saying much, but it was fun, short and simple. It gave us a Vector cameo, and that’s amazing.
The cameo may be great but makes absolutely no sense. Gru is over fifty in despicable me and Vector is around twenty. In this movie Gru is just about eleven years old. So technically Vector isn't even born yet
@HotAnimeBabe99541 I literally noticed that also! In the first movie, you see a blue print in the background that says: “minion plans” and it literally shows the minions were robotically made by Gru. That explains why I wasn’t expecting that much sense in the new movie. And that would also explain why Otto and Bob aren’t present in the original films.
@@theobrianbros1168 I like to believe that Gru multiplied the minions by making robot replicas of them, which explains why you can see more in the original film than this movie.
My main problem with Illumination has always been that Despicable Me was a genuinely good movie, maybe even a great one. It's also the only film they've made that didn't feel like it was motivated by, if not cynicism, then a desire to service a market with a product. And while there's nothing really _wrong_ with that - animators need to eat, just like everyone else - the sad thing is that they proved that they could do more. But instead of trying they just... Played it safe. Made a product they knew they could sell, and then sold it. Stopped trying to express anything. And I can't fathom that the artists behind the films have nothing to express, since you don't bust your ass in a medium like animation because it's easy or glamorous.
Yeah that's my issue with them. They took one risk but instead of following up on it and made a diverse catalogue of animated films, they stood in that one place and kept tuning out the same formula for their movies
That's exactly my fear with the Mario movie, if they decide to do more of the same they've been doing for a long time, I have the feeling Nintendo will get harsher than they've been lately, I just hope they actually decide to give a sh and make a good movie once again
The positive thing I can say about Illumination they do make safe movies and sequels. There not offensively awful like the animated titanic movies. Or depressing bad like Ice age 6 there movies just exist.
It pains me how Illumination had a really good original pitch for Lorax 2012, but because of marketing, (the antagonistic idea of the movie) all of the good stuff was watered down of cut off entirely, and that sucks.
Funfact, my sister's friend was one of the people who comes up with Minion dialogue, at least in the first few films. It's why you sometimes can spot Malay or Tagalog in their nonsense gibberish lol.
The thing about the first Despicable Me is that it felt like it had heart, and it’s about parenthood and the loss of trust children get when they don’t have a parental figure they can trust. It shows Gru and the girls learning how to just BE around one another, but it also shows that Gru already is acting as a father figure to many of the minions themselves, which is why when he starts actually parenting the girls, even though flashbacks show him not having a supportive parental figure, he actually does a decent job from the beginning. There’s so much there that they could have brought to the later films, but it’s like with each addition to the franchise that heartbeat grows quieter.
@@aldranzam3456 As for Rise of Gru: Can be simple, the medallion is what gives this league of super villains power, a common cause for world conquest. They likely stole it from a musem after learning about it's untapped power. And due to a power vaccum caused by the Minions in the previosu film, it's what allowed them to have full control over their territories. No need to monologue here as a lot info can be missed when not simply paying attention.
I remember back in the day when the minions were hated by a large majority, but now they are just an unstoppable force especially in the meme department
The majority within your circle perhaps, but they've never NOT been marketable. People younger than you like them, their parent tolerate them, and their grandparents love them. Its just now, they've been 'in fashion' so long the more critical people who hated them at least enjoy them ironically, such is the paradox of being in a world that's perpetually post modern.
@Super Succubi it's funny because Despicable Me was a genuinely great movie with great characters and a great message but the major takeaway was "minion funny"
Personally, I think Dreamworks handles this formula better. They have plenty of safe, agreeable movies like Trolls and Home. But they’re also willing to step out and try something new like Meganind and Kung Fu Panda
People tend to say that Dreamworks has lost their touch over the years, and while I’m somewhat inclined to agree, they’re still fully capable of making good or great movies these days as seen by HTTYD 3 and more recently Bad Guys
Even those films try to break the mold somewhat, far more than anything the Despicable Me franchise adds to the table, that is for certain. Trolls has a creative handcraft art style for example.
Minor correction: The Minions didn't get banned in China, they cut out the ending and apparently just replaced it with a bit of text, stating that Gru went on to turn his back on his criminal career and instead became a law-abiding citizen raising his family. Which is so much more gloriously stupid. Side Note: They gave the same treatment to Fight Club, replacing the bit where buildings get blown up with an ending text stating that everyone got arrested by the police before they could follow through with their plan) and Tyler Durden (you know, the character who turns out to be merely a figment of the protagonists imagination and not an actual person) was admitted to a mental hospital and later released as cured.
regarding the voice acting, I honestly felt like Steve Carell stepped up his game when voicing Gru. whether he was happy or angry or terrified, it all felt genuine and it felt like Carell was giving it his all. like, his screams of pain when he was tied to the clock felt real - at least, it did to me. while I also agree that we could've used a bit more of the Gru and Wild Knuckles subplot, i thought what we got was juuuust enough to make the relationship endearing. I do wish the final battle wasn't so rushed, but the battle was still a lot of fun. between this movie and Sing 2, I feel like Illumination is getting a bit better. maybe their stories still have that vignette vibe, but their dramatic moments are hitting a bit harder these days imo.
My favourite line of the movie was when gru, after losing everything, looked at the camera and said "all that's left... Is despicable me" It shook me to my core
Now we all understand why people go to this movie in suits. It’s such a cinematic masterpiece. Humanity will forever be impacted by this phenomenal piece of cinema.
Now if only some of those people stopped throwing around bananas, breaking theater screens, or harassing people, so that other people can enjoy it as well.
This is the best critical review of Minions I’ve ever seen. I’ve gone through the whole _"I hate minions phase,"_ but you know what? They’re fucking hilarious. Those wacky tic-tacs got me for a reason.
So when i went to a theater to see this movie, people behind me were talking about how the minions f*ck and give birth to more minions, then when the movie ended everyone stood up clapping and cheering like it was the greatest thing ever created, one guy got up and screamed "I'M GAY!!!! I'M F*CKING GAY!!!!" and while people were leaving, someone threw a purple looking banana at the back seats. Definitely the strangest theater experience i've ever had Edit: to those who don't believe me, i swear to god this is true Also i didn't expect this to get so many likes.
I get what you mean by Illumination "playing it safe" with their films. They're cute, family friendly and simple. But think about some of the most beloved animated films in the past: Beauty and the Beast, Iron Giant, The Land Before Time, The Prince of Egypt, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda. These were all films that weren't "playing it safe". Rather, they all pushed the boundaries of what their medium was capable of, whether through writing, animation or characters. All the film's above have an artistic level of passion put into them and the people who made them proved time and again the vast potential animation has and continues to show. In a few decades, it's a safe bet to think that that the Minions franchise will only be remembered for the memes and bizarre online trends it started but nothing else. While movies like Beauty and the Beast or Iron Giant will be remembered and loved for a long, long time.
@@BJGvideos Land Before Time pushed boundaries on how dark animation directed for children could go, darker than even disney, and Shrek introduced modern culture, parody and soundtrack-based animation as well as popularizing CGI. Also it was the first winner of the Best animated feature award
@@keeranchang6485 Idk I'm pretty sure Land Before Time wasn't any darker than a lot of other movies. And Shrek wasn't the first kids movie to have pop culture.
Animation films that play safe are fine. But I am more intrigued on animations movies that pushed the boundaries. Like in Sea Beast. Where the animators are not even afraid to show blood on a kids movie (i think) and, I forgot the girl's name, she grabs a dagger and almost stab Captain Crow and I was like "Ok now this is getting interesting." I'm not saying I'm into violence but I am interested and intrigued on animated kids movies or not animated kids movies pushing the boundaries.
Okay but a film about a magical Chinese zodiac pendant with supernatural properties could be really cool on it's own too. You could have characters who know what it does and seek to harness its power (either for good or evil purposes), and maybe a protagonist who's sent on a quest to find it and insure that it doesn't fall into the wrong hands. A plot twist could be that the supposed 'good guys' who sent the protagonist after the pendant were corrupt, and the script could drop subtle hints to that right from the get-go, but not in a way that makes it painstakingly obvious or in a way that makes the twist feel like a last minute thing for 'shock factor'
When the first Minions movie came out, a reviewer I frequently sought for his opinions very frankly asked if the Minions ever worked for Hitler. My immediate response was "Yeah, why do you think he killed himself?"
This is why I'm still very optimistic for the Mario Movie because I can only imagine Myamoto chose them because of their animation style. And since Myamoto is a director In the movie I'm sure it won't have that... Illumination charm to it. It'll actually probably be their first movie with an interesting story to tell because there's been no official story for Mario and Luigi, there's been brief things about their lives but not anything like this. Can't wait to see the first trailer!
Joking aside I really enjoyed this movie, there were elements that worked quite well. The comedy wasn’t as annoying and it was a treat to hear Steve Carell as Gru as always. The main issue I think is that, the movie doesn’t prioritise Gru’s rise oddly enough he has become the secondary character in his own franchise. Which sucks because the father son bond between him and Wild Knuckle was oddly wholesome and should have been the main drive.
Something I was upset about with Illumination's Lorax was the fact that they toned down a movie about something dark like greed and pride. The original short movie from the 1972 spent the vast majority of it's film time showing the slow but sure deforestation and then it's results, while in Illumination's Lorax the deforestation is condensed into the span of time How Bad Can I Be took. Speaking of How Bad Can I Be, there was another song that was originally going to be used before it called Biggering, but it was cut because the higher ups deemed it "too dark." Go listen to it, it's a great song and digs more into greed and pride (ironic that it got cut by a greedy corporation) than something like How Bad Can I Be, which I won't lie is a catchy song but also essentially tells the audience that the Onceler is blind to what he is doing to the environment until he full on embraces his actions. Paul Cincero even commented on a video that featured a fanmade storyboard talking about it. My point is that Illumination has the tools to make a movie with a solid story that challenges kids with moral dilemmas and provide solutions to them, but instead they opt for what is marketable and easy, something safe and comfortable, which makes me pretty upset all around.
Really wanted Wild Knuckles to get a hold of the zodiac stone and transform into a giant Dog or Boar, AND HE ALMOST DID, I WAS SO SAD WHEN HE MISSED IT AND THEY DEADASS BURNED THE SHIT OUT OF HIM LIKE COME ON, THE FIGHT SCENE WOULD HAVE BEEN SO COOL AND HE WOULD BE FIGHTING TO PROTECT GRU AAAAAAAAAAAA
To me it’s crazy how talented Illumination is. And how they underestimate themselves. I watched Sing 2 a few nights ago, and I was genuinely surprised by how pretty EVERYTHING looked. Textures, fur, lightning, colors, etc… The Illumination team is definitely talented and know what to do to make a movie good and pretty. But the fact that their movie’s plots often fall short, or the jokes in their movies make it fall flat is upsetting… The Clay Calloway character looks SOOO good on the film. And to me it was crazy how everything else also looked pretty good. This studio knows what it can do, but it just refuses to do it. And that sucks… I wish they gave themselves a chance to do something _more_.
Illumination outsources their animation to an animation company in France where the government give tax credits and write offs to arts projects like it one reason they are always on or below budget The studio itself does not do anything with the animation.
there's definitely a reason Nintendo picked Illumination to make their super mario movie, it'll make a big profit on a low budget but they'll use all their best jokes in the trailer and the movie overall will likely be pretty forgettable, but parents will take the kids to see it for the celebrity voices
@@nesyboi9421 sonic movie is ok it's gonna be leagues better than the mario movie but we need to stop pretending the sonic movie was any better than ok
Honestly... I liked Minions Rise of Gru. I only went to see it cause my Mom LOVES minions and I just wanted to hang out with her, but I honestly found myself laughing ALOT at this movie and genuinely enjoying it, expecally more than I did the first one.
Not going to lie. Minions 2 is honestly one of the better movies that’s come out recently. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, puts the necessary plot points in at pretty good spots, and it’s incredibly fast paced/fun. Good stuff ngl!
I think the reason why these movies are successful is that they know what they want to be and not to be. These movies are mostly about a fun time with or without your children. Where many other children focused movies fail is that they do not consider the elder audience. Very often it is a torture for parens to sit in the children movies - the jokes are so trivial that they are no fun for older persons. In the Illumination movies you cannot expect masterpieces but you can be sure that regardless of your age you can have your fun.
What WOULD have been neat was the Wild Knuckle villain having the same arc as Gru in the first movie. This in turn foreshadowing Gru ending up doing the same. That would have been a neat wrap around. Should have spent more time with them and growing the villain father character a bit more. Go even deeper and have him sadly pass away during the final battle which in turn is what gives Gru the KICK he needed to defeat the other villains WITH the minions. But ... that would be TOO COMPLICATED for the kiddos I'm sure.
I kind of want to see Saber at a movie, smacking popcorn buckets out of people's hands screaming "YOU CALL THIS 'ART'?!" now. Like, I would LOVE to see it in person!
This feels so refreshing! I don't care much for The Minions and I doubt I will see this movie, but I'm happy you acknowledge that there can be just fun movies like this. Let's let people just enjoy this and have a good time. I've been growing really tired of all these movie critics that just WANT to hate on a piece of media and try to clutch at every straw to criticise something. Thank you for your honest words and for not forcing any hate, Saber!
For the last freaking time, the movie explicitly shows that the Minions were living in solitude since freaking 1858 and didn't re-emerge until 1968. Smh fake fans
Dear Saberspark: You are allowed to say “I find the minions annoying” and that’s ok. You don’t have to spend 20 minutes dancing around that essential thesis
I agree with you, but I want to critique Hollywood for playing it safe too much. Especially Disney. I'm tired of sequels, live-action remakes, and tie-in movies. I want something new and different. I miss seeing the passion in movies like I saw back in the 90s. Now it feels like "we need more money, pull an idea from the hat and go with that." It feels so lifeless anymore.
@Ronald Nygma Enlighten me, then; what's a good movie to watch that isn't a remake, live action remake, or sequel or a superhero movie that I should watch?
I feel it isn't necessarily "pointless" to critique a kids movie when its your job. Like clearly don't go around making fun of people who like it or being mad about it but if its your job to critique something you shouldnt feel embarassed or pathetic.
exactly! personally I had some critiques of this film and stated them (I make content, if you're confused), but I'd never make fun of someone for liking something unless it was a friend and they knew I was just having a joke with them. This comment should have more likes.
I'm glad that memes powered up this movie and gave it hype that it sold more than 40 gruillion tickets. The characters are well written, the script is also well written, and the plot was pretty good. Truly one of the movies out there in the movie industry!
I believe Lightyear got banned in China because of the time travel rather than the kiss, but I think the kiss has also something to do, and with minions I think it was banned because of the whole Magical zodiac medalion, they are very critical of their culture being portrayed in that way.
@@pugman9672 google it, with avengers I don’t really know what happened (money maybe) but they banned time travel movies on the logic that it disrespect history, is pretty similar in logic to why ghost movies are also banned in China (ghostbusters).
You don’t ask how much a man makes. You don’t ask how much a woman weighs. And you don’t ask a minion: “which villain did you serve until around may of 1945?…”
Pfft, you clearly don’t know the Minions lore, they were in a ice cave serving a yeti until the 60’s. The real question is who were they serving in 2001…
@@KaytheWooper The Minions were serving Justin Timberlake in 2001 obviously who else would they be serving? Let’s hurry up and move onto the next question please!!!
It is a widely debated subject in the Despicable Me community that the Minions served Hitler between 1933 to 1945, with some claiming that such events could not have taken place given that the Minions were trapped in an ice cave for a long duration of time. However, some evidence in the Despicable Me universe points toward a possibility that the Minions not only served Hitler and Stalin, but engaged in a brutal civil war that nearly wiped out the species as a whole. **Evidence No. 1:** The Minions trapped in the ice cave are NOT the only Minions in the world. **Proof:** In the Despicable Me and Minions films, we see the Minions interacting with Human society on a rather normal scale. Whether it be going on vacation, joining the French Military, hitch hiking to the villainy convention, wandering through TV studios, getting ice cream and going out in public no one seems to bat an eye to the existence of the Minions. Given that the Minions have been around before the Dinosaurs, its not impossible to assume that there were millions, if not billions of Minions alive on earth given the time they had to spread across the globe. Some possible evidence that there were millions to billions of Minions is how little people react to them in society. No one seems to bat an eye to the Minions, implying they've been abundant and around long enough to be completely normalized by Human society. In fact the Minions may have well been completely integrated into human society instead of being viewed as a different species. In our universe, if a few hundred 3 foot half naked lemon Tic-Tacs speaking gibberish appeared in the middle of Times Square, not only would people immediately bat an eye, but all of the nation's three letter organizations would be swiftly mobilized to New York. This isn't the case in the Despicable Me universe. **Evidence No. 2:** The Minion species, while very resilient, is NOT immortal due to a severe weakness to biological and chemical attacks. **Proof:** In the starting paragraph, I mention that the Minions nearly went extinct from a brutal Minion Civil War. While this point may be contradicted by the Minions being able to survive explosions, torture devices, bullets, kinetic impact and many other lethal threats, the Minions are not very resilient to biological and chemical attacks. In Despicable Me 2, we see the Minions become mutated by the PX-41 Mutagen. Rapidly altering the effected Minion's DNA and causing drastic changes regarding: * Tooth and mouth structure * Abnormal hair growth * Eye color * Skin pigment * Physical structure * Personality and behavior Later in Despicable Me 2, we see Dr. Nefario cure the Minions using an antidote mixed with the Jelly from earlier in the film. The PX-41 Mutagen, and its respective cure are solid evidence that the Minions are not entirely immortal and possess a severe and potentially lethal vulnerability to biological and chemical attacks. While some may argue that the PX-41 Mutagen and its antidote did not kill the Minions, a disease or toxic gas could prove fatal showing they can be drastically effected by chemical and biological substances. **Evidence No. 3**: Stalin and Hitler both attracted Minions in large quantities to both sides of the Eastern Front, which would result in the gruesome Minion Civil War. **Proof:** Stalin and Hitler were both evil tyrants who would be seen as nothing more than soulless monsters to any human, but for the Minions, saying they were gods amongst Minion would be an understatement. With Stalin's gulags and Hitler's concentration camps, the two of them would be the greatest villians Minion kind had witnessed. With World War 2 beginning in the 1930s, the Minions suffered a brutal split in their society and culture, now voluntarily choosing sides of the Second World War between the two tyrants of the Eastern Front. Because of this, the Minions would engage in a brutal war to end the disagreement of whether Stalin or Hitler would be more deserving of Minion service and worship. Given their vulnerability to chemical agents, both Human and Minion soldiers of the Eastern Front would release chemical agents such as Chlorine, Phosgene and Mustard Gas across the front lines to attack the other side's Minion forces. Given the sheer bloodiness of the Eastern Front, its likely that the majority of the Minions would be killed in the Second World War. Only a few isolated pockets of Minions would survive following the Second World War, with a primary example being the Minions in the ice cave, having emerged following the World Wars with no knowledge of Stalin Or Hitler and the near extinction of their race. Evidence of a Minion Civil War occurring and being possible can be found at the end of Despicable Me 3, in which a sizable chunk of Gru's Minions defect to Dru, having deemed Dru more evil and more worth their service, along with the remaining chunk of Minions choosing to remain with Gru. **Closure**: It is unclear what happens after Gru gives chase to Dru at the end of Despicable Me 3, however it can be safely assumed that Despicable Me 4 will cover the complete extinction of the last remaining Minions as they battle it out through various means of chemical warfare over whether Gru or Dru is more evil. Despicable Me 5 will potentially cover Dru and Gru putting their differences aside from their battle in Despicable Me 4 and the two will begin tampering in the realm of genetic engineering in an attempt to revive the Minion species. However the Minions created via Gru and Dru's genetic engineering research would go wrong, and the new Minions would resemble the Post-Humans from All Tomorrows. Leaked script details suggest that the Post-Minions would follow Kevin becoming a female Temptor, Bob getting turned into a Colonial and Stuart being morphed into a Hedonist. It is currently unknown what other All Tomorrows species will appear in the 5th Despicable Me film. Overall, It is very likely that the minions did serve Hitler to some capacity, and nearly went extinct following World War 2. The tale of the Minion is nothing short but a tragic one. A culturally rich and intelligent race, which had been around before the Dinosaurs, choosing the path of annihilating themselves over two questions with no answer. Today they are a reminder, that Humanity must avoid the same fate as their Minion brothers. The Minions of the World Wars are to today's Humans as a grim teaching, telling us we must be careful with how we treat the choices of conflict and geopolitics, otherwise, we will hear the rhymes of the history books once more. **Works Cited**: 1. I was a major SIMP for the minions when I was in grade 5(the time I first saw Despicable Me 2). Around a year later I grew out of it and I didn't even touch it throughout my middle school & high school years because I figured that the franchise didn't have any substance and it was just another modern marketable product to get little kids' attention. But now that I've reached adulthood I'm in further realisation that the Despicable Me/Minions franchise really isn't bad and I'm compelled to come back to see it from time to time. Compared to another franchise I simped for during childhood which I'm now a complete hater of, the Despicable Me/Minions series at least has some redeeming qualities : 1. The design of the Minions are cute (my favourite minions are Dave, Bob & Otto). 2. The interactions between Gru and the girls and the Minions are actually pretty sweet, showing that Gru is a great father figure to both the girls and the Minions. 3. There is depth in Gru's character. He's basically been bullied throughout his school years and it's apparent that he's grown used to/numb towards this type of treatment. In addition to the absence of motherly love during his childhood, he's left all to himself and it's no surprise that he grows up to be a supervillain, because he wants to show the people who had ill-treated him his power and what he can accomplish. All the same, I'm impressed that Gru is still able to preserve kindness, selflessness & love in his core(as shown in how he saves the girls in the first movie for example). I think this is also the reason the Minions are willing to follow him and go back to him after ditching him in Despicable Me 3 - he loves them, he cares for them (the Minions cared for him when he was a child too and he grows up with the Minions), which none of their previous bosses were able to do. Heck he's able to remember the names of every single Minion! He's a "villain", sure, but overall he's not a malicious person, which makes him a very sympathising character. P.S. I think Gru & the Minions work best when they're together, which is one of the things that makes Despicable Me 1 & 2 and Minions 2 so enjoyable(Despicable Me 2 and Minions 2 are my personal favourites ; I've never seen the entire Despicable Me 3 but by the looks of it I'm not too impressed ; things in Minions 1 is just over-the-top chaotic & ridiculous and the scene where Stuart hypnotises and dances with the three guards gives me major second-hand embarrassment). When they're in their separate entities, things seem to be a little lost, weirdly. 4. The soundtracks and some of the songs are absolute bops - just listen to "My Life"(end credit song of Despicable Me 1), "Happy" and "Turn Up The Sunshine"
There was exactly one joke that I laughed at in this movie. When the minion was doing a police sketch of the person who took the zodiac amulet thing from Otto,, and they reveal the skatch to be a picture of Gene Simmons from Kiss.
It was honestly a very sweet movie with decent and satisfying writing, as well as very creative and funny scenes. It had an odd sense of humor that was very much appreciated, and laid off the peepeepoopoo fart jokes. It was honestly a good movie!
I totally get where you're coming from here. I enjoy animation so much myself and sometimes wish a company like Illumination would take some of that Minions money and do something... bigger and broader, just kind of "on the side". And I do wish that animation aimed at children in general would rise to a higher standard; just because they are children doesn't mean media aimed at them needs to suck. But I do on some level understand the need to sometimes watch something just... dumb. I mean, Aquaman for example, was a horrible, terrible movie on almost every level in my opinion. But I'll be damned if I didn't have a hell of a time watching it.
Minions: The Rise of Gru was the movie ever made. I love how they made Gru team up with Morbius to stop the villains and had Gru say “It’s Gruin time”. 🍌/10 must watch
@beyond your imagination i loved it when they both shouted "It's morbin time!" And then right before they went in for the clash gru whispered to himself confidently "imma bout ta gruin dis man's whole career" It was such a scene
I liked the first movie, and the second one to an extent. I think the minions are designed to be cute and marketable, and they really hit it out the park with the marketing initially, but now I feel like you either love them or hate them, it's very 50/50.
"Minions have their place in animation". I agree. Animation is for everyone and having good animated media for kids is just as important as having it for adults.
@@littlemoth4956 When I say good I mean "Good quality visual animation". The writing and humor may not be up to your standards but it doesn't have to be. Not everything animated has to appeal to you, personally.
Unfortunately, it’s been co-opted by moronic memelords who go to see it “ironically” then criticize its commercial success while being completely oblivious to their own massive contribution to that success because they’re faux-intellectual assholes. Dumb kids movies are fine, but they get taken over by people who think they’re “smart” but are really just idiot kids themselves.
Gonna be honest was thinking about what you said and looking at illumination I think I suddenly had a thought. They are the Hanna Barbara of kids films. They have a good range of things that while never pushes the envelope, still can be good even if safely doing the formula that worked for them. Sure they could push things, but they are making something people can enjoy even if not thought provoking or deep.
The problem with the simple kids' movies, in a larger sense, is that they have no staying power. I'm a daycare teacher, and none of my kids are "fans" of Secret Life of Pets or Sing, even though when those films released they watched and liked them. In contrast to, for example, Moana, which came out in the same era but has seem to just "stuck" in kids' minds/hearts better. Is that due to the magic of Disney Marketing? Maybe, but Sing was pretty heavily marketed as well, but the difference is the quality of movie to go with the marketing.
What I liked about this movie is that is a real coming of age story for Gru, really improved his character whe he said: It's time for me to Gru up! I shed a tear, really one of the movies of my life!
When i went to watch the movie, there were more teen groups then families 😭 only one group was in suits but everyone clapped when the movie began and when it ended
went there with friends. lots of people in suits and gowns (like us), a classy applause, had lots of fun. the movie is absolutely pointless but we did laugh a lot, so i guess it was a fun experience to go to the first screening
I found it a solid movie! The jokes actually made me laugh. Especially tye one where Kevin was smashing Stuart's head on the chopping board! The way that was executed, holy shit! 🤣
Saber, you're genuinely my favorite animation youtuber, you seem like a person who actually knows shit and cares about the medium, I'd say you're as far away from the manchild stereotype of "WHY DOESN'T KID FLICK CATER TO ME, AN ADULT!!" as you could possibly be. I also love animation, so I understand your concern about consumerism and corporation blind praise watering down what's basically an art form. Illumination movies are basically like fast food. They're fine to have, they can be really tasty too, but they shouldn't be your entire diet nor what you imagine food as a whole to be. I've seen other creators like you express this feeling of "giving up" when it comes to criticizing Illumination movies because they're too successful and people like them and honestly I understand, but I also can't help but think most people that came to you with that were in bad faith because caring about animation as a whole is seen as cringe and "for kids". You did good to stay grounded with your criticisms. I don't know what the solution to it all is, but I think you made a great video that basically discussed all the grievances I also have, so just... keep it up man, you're on the right track!
I think it's perfectly legitimate, and not pretentious at all, to say, "This film was good simple fun, but not much ore. I liked it, but hope the next one has more substance." Like you said there's a place at the table for both approaches.
Yes exactly. I went to film school and you'd expect me to be the snobby "film critic" type but I also have the awareness of people going to movies to turn their brains off and being entertained for a couple of hours. Not needing the film to be deep. I was that way when I went to see Rise of Gru, and I enjoyed it. My mom thought the film was hilarious. So while I have the film experience and I like analyzing movies too, I'm also on the same wavelength as my parents and know movies are supposed to be mindless fun. I definitely want to mix those two concepts together in my own films. The only problem now is getting in the industry.
I think a lot of the issues with the minion franchise is that the creators know that this type of stuff sells and so they at least put the effort into making as good an animation as they can. So you end up with some really good animation for a movie that is otherwise just childish. So the kids end up watching because "lol fart joke" while the adults end up not despising the experience because "wow that looks cool". This is something that I think a lot of companies lately have forgotten. It is not about selling a product to some abstract numbers. Its about making something that is just fun to see. This is also why all the minion clones straight up fail. Every single time they copy the minions because "oh those little yellow things sell" and not the rationale behind it which is "oh those adorable little dorks are funny".
As someone who is not an Illumination fan, I find your approach to reviewing their stuff very reasonable. Everyone who watches them is having a good time. I don't get how (personally), but why take that from them. Your content is great you offer a lot of refreshing criticisms of movies and I really like that.
I definitely didn’t hate it. It was fine and I even laughed a few times. It’s fun, it’s bright, it’s incredibly stupid, and I liked it. I went with a group of friends and we all had a good time
The Despicable me movies are some of the only animated flicks Illumination have made that actually meant something to me. Everything else they make is fairly harmless and don’t strive for any outstanding stories or leaps in the field of animation. They’re not visually breathtaking movies, and mostly serve a purpose to gain money at the box office and entertain families. You honestly hit the nail on the head though Saber…. World is in a rough place right now. Between Covid and the Trigger happy Psycho’s ruining peoples lives…. Sometimes we just need a movie to remind us that we are still capable of feeling something other than depression with what we face. They may not strive for much, but illumination will always guarantee Entertaining movies that can lighten up your day if you choose to let it. Great video as always saber, and I look forward to what you’ll do next.
I unironically love despicable me as a standalone movie, also The Lorax low-key got a banger soundtrack, especially the cut song "biggering" slaps hard
As a kid, One of my favorite movies ever was the 2D animated Adaptation of "The Brave Little Toaster". It dealt with very real themes, was very entertaining, and in some ways shaped who I am today. I don't think people will ever be able to say things like that about movies like Minions the rise of gru. I Still want to expect more from the movie industry then today's garbage standards, even if there's not many others who do.
I wish they wouldn’t have labeled it as a Minions sequel. The minions themselves are not at all important and are mainly just there to fill runtime. Calling it just “The Rise of Gru” instead of “Minions: the Rise of Gru” would set a much more realistic expectation for the minions’ relevance to the movie. The movie just isn’t about them. Heck if they still wanted to shove a gag in the title, “Despicable Me 0: The Rise of Gru” would work too.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Minions: The Rise of Gru. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Gru's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Minions: The Rise of Gru truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Gru's existencial catchphrase "I'm gonna gruin this man's whole career," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Illumination's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Minions: The Rise of Gru tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
2:10 I feel this way sometimes when I'm being critical of certain movies and thats what alot of film critics neglect to understand. you can't judge every movie based on the same components, sometimes you see a poorly written movie but you just have to keep your mouth shut because it's not trying to be something amazing. it just wants to be dumb fun, and it succeeds at that
After I've watched it on Netflix, Minions: The Rise of Gru was really something. Despicable Me is one of my favorite movie franchises growing up, and I'm glad that there's a sequel to the 2015 spin-off prequel. I honestly like it more than Illumination's other film series like The Secret Life of Pets or Sing, because all the characters have interesting personalities. The film has a couple of homages to the first Despicable Me film and how some characters looked when they were younger, which I find very clever and nostalgic. I didn't expect the Vicious 6 using the Stone to turn into giant animals in the Chinese Zodiac in San Francisco, and I did not also expect them to trying to kill little Gru by tying him to the hands of a clock tower and tearing his body apart like a Jigsaw torture device. In conclusion, Minions: The Rise of Gru was very interesting and nostalgic.
Recently I watched the rise of gru. 5 minutes after watching the film my father came back with the milk and Karen came back with the kids. Thank you minions rise of gru!
This was because a lot of them started being a nuisance (this happened at the mall by me) and were being loud in the hallways of the movies and just wrecking havoc in the stores nearby.
I genuinely like the Despicable Me trilogy. Just the whole found family thing is a thing I adore, and watching this guy finding people who come to love him unconditionally is lovely. As for the Minions, their films are fine, deffo perfect for young kids to just watch and have fun. I would have found them utterly hilarious when I was like 7. There is something to be said about not challenging kids with more complex or darker concepts that they will encounter in life, but there are plenty other studios who fo that (thinking of Laika specifically) so imo if Illumination just wants to be 'haha fart jokes' media to entertain children then that's great.
Love the opening of this video! The experience of just realizing that there’s no point in trying to criticize a mass appeal movie that does little to push any boundaries was exactly the same experience I had watching Thor: Love & Thunder. (Although Taika really did seem to push as much as he was able to with this one) Watching the guy next to me go through a whirlwind of emotions throughout the runtime just really showed that some franchises are just simply not for me.
Idk if anyone caught on to this but the one thing I found very cool about the main minion trio is that they made them mirror the three girls gru eventually adopts in the first film, kinda neat ig and also they weren’t as obnoxious this time around lol
I thought this movie was fun definitely a improvement from the first movie. Gru is well being gru, the story was a nice way to tell how it all began for gru, minions ofc being minions, the father and son relationship between Gru and a old Vicious 6 member was cute, the ending credits was also pretty nice same goes for the opening, the action and the violence in this movie was a lot of fun, and the sound track here was a thousand times better than modern day music that’s played in modern day kids movies (some can be good but most can be bad) overall thought was a good movie not a fantastic film but definitely a improvement from it’s predecessor giving it a Gru/10 & a 🍌/10. A cinematic gru-sterpiece!
Despicable me 1 & 2 are very fun movies to me, indeed. Never watched any of the minions ones and dont care to do so but I appreciate the great ones we got. Also I want to add, I like the self awareness about this whole deal, very understandable as someone who finds myself in that position in my head very often with things.
words cannot describe how i felt while watching minions rise of gru in theaters, it was a truly special experience, I really wasnt prepared to feel such emotions while watching minions rise of gru, the old man dying at the end left me in tears, overall, it was one of the best movies I have ever watched in my life, second best movie next to morbius, 11/10 would definitely recommend minions rise of gru was a life changing experience
I could never disagree more with the "turn off your brain and enjoy the movie". To some extent yes, don't tear yourself a new one trying to give criticism to every single movie that isn't a masterpiece and doesn't follow a strict rule of realism. If we all just did that, turned off our brain then disney, and all of these other big movie making companies will just stop caring about quality movies. Imagine if we accepted that family movies doesn't have to be well written, same with superhero movies, we would have never gotten movies like end game, the first iron man movie, narnia, how to train your dragon, avatar the last airbender (the series), arcane, turning red, kung fu panda, encanto, luca, wolf walkers, klaus, zootopia, thor:ragnarok, suicide squad (the new one), the guardians of the galaxy, spiderman: into the spiderverse etc etc. Fuck the "turn off your brain and just enjoy the movie" mentality, of course a movie doesn't have to be a masterpiece to be enjoyable/fun to watch, but damn it has such a much more lasting effect one oneself and larger groups of people when it actually is well written, it can change the perspective of a lot of issues in the world when it's presented right. Enjoy your movies, both the good and bad ones, but never stop criticizing these big companies, don't let them use us for easy money.
Yeah, I usually just turn off my brain for a movie I've already seen and kind of enjoyed, but if I ever come across a masterpiece I will definitely try and make more happen
People who say “just turn your brain off” really mean “the film is shit but I don’t want to come off as rude”, but I don’t think that’s what Saber is saying.
The problem with a lot of Illumination films from story perspective is that the characters don't develop. If you look at the good movies like The Lorax, Despicable Me, Sing, and even Pets the characters have real development and growth as the movie goes on. But the rest of them like Despicable Me 3, by that point Gru has accepted role of father and husband so there wasn't a lot of growth left for him to do. He was never going back to being a villain. The same thing with Sing 2 and Pets 2, there wasn't any room for growth because all of it was done during the first films so instead there was lot disjointed stories without a lot of stakes or development. The Grinch just wasn't a very good movie in general. The same thing with Minions, they're the Minions, they haven't changed in millions of years canonically so they aren't going to now. And Illumination does realize that they can make a lot money without a lot of effort and that frustrating when you know they were once capable of making meaningful films. Criticism of Illumination is justified as well as stupid because it does boil down to a bunch of man-children screaming that the studio doesn't deserve their seat at the big boy table but what are you going to do about it? Animation is a business and Illumination movies sell. I personally like Illumination. They aren't masterful works like Dreamworlds or Disney but they also aren't terrible either especially when the studio does actually try.
imo, the point of Despicable Me 2 & 3 is that Gru has finished his character development, but other people keep trying to revert it, either maliciously or ignorantly From his perspective, he's living the good life with a loving family. From everyone else's perspective, he committed the greatest heist of all time and decided to retire early and waste his potential. There's a grain of truth in the latter, and the later movies are all about Gru doing his best to keep his current trajectory on course.
True. Illumination Studio needs more room for improvement but too bad most people on the Internet called it the "worst animation studio of all time" even though it isn't even close. Funny how people are mad over fart and juvenile jokes in the Illumination films. I can understand that off-color humor can be tasteless, but people take it seriously. That's like getting offended over a whoopie cushion.
@@davidhong1934 if people wanna force Gru back into villainy, they should hold his family hostage, maybe including his brother. Movie could be about Gru being begrudgingly villainous again while he has some Minions try to find and save his family. With the villains hoping that Gru starts to find actual glee in being a villain again.
I understand the appeal of dumb fun for families, of course. Illumination doing what they do is proof enough. But I don't think that criticism against that is unwarranted. Despicable Me was fun for the family, but still had narrative threads that you can actually follow. Seeing Gru's arc with his adoptive daughters was nice, and it didn't feel like it was completely handed to him or whatever. When people talk about children's shows or movies there's a difference between "early learning for babies" and more complex shows like Spongebob. Everyone uses Spongebob as an example, but that show is easy to watch and laugh at as a child that doesn't really know what's happening, but in a way also funnier as an adult. Like they weren't trying to make baby sensory videos, rather content that the entire family could genuinely enjoy together. Not that everything needs to be like that, just that the bare minimum of effort would be nice at least. Just cause it's for kids doesn't mean it needs to suck, is how I see it.
The Minions are basically Illuminations Mickey Mouse. They are universally popular and easy to market with a variety of merchandise and promotions. The memes that flooded before this movie was what I'd consider a marketing tactic. Because asking people about the minion memes they said it was dumb/unfunny but somehow they're very popular.
I don’t think anyone is asking for an Oscar film when they think of Minions and Despicable Me. They’re dumb fun animated movies for families which turns out is something that a lot of people can get down with. If you look at the common person, they just want to be entertained. If I want to watch a masterful animated masterpiece I’ll normally watch an anime film or European animated project. This film was serviceable, it did it’s job well, it wasn’t as funny as I was hoping but it made up with it through it’s wholesome moments. Overall I’d give the film a 6/10.

My main issue with Illumination is their potential. The cut Biggering song alone proves there’s some real talent desperately trying to express themselves through film. But the higher-ups are bastards.
For real, that song slaps so much harder than how bad can I be
Illumination also definately has the Budget to make really good movies, but they Just don't
Like the Mario movie
@Ahmed Malaki I don't understand how you could miss the point of the episode that bad.
That is the real reason why I skipped this movie. The executives at Illumination only care about themselves.
My dad unironically loves Minions. I myself am an animation history buff, love studying it, etc. It pained me at first, but he genuinely derives so much joy from these lil banana fuckers that I will never criticize minions in front of him.

It was such a movie
It’s finally here. (Pulls out noose)
This comment is pure gold
I love this meme so much XD
This joke is so tired.
You're basically looking for Studio Laika's output imo
Indeed. And it's something Illumination could have easily accomplished while still playing it safe with the humor and general Minions antics.
I mean the movie was serviceable, it was honestly pretty wholesome and fun. The Illumination animation style always looks good, and seeing all the references to past minions films and overall pop culture was a bonus. It’s a 6/10 for me and it honestly is just a fun movie.
that's what rise of gru was for
Even if it's just "a harmless fun kids movie" I still think critiques and reviews are a good thing because it keeps the studios from becoming lazy and generic (even if Illumination seems to be past this in all aspects of the word) there is nothing wrong with giving your thoughts on something. A critique does not have to be a bash, it is a chance to show where improvement might be able to come and make something great amazing. So don't beat yourself up too bad, Saber, if you have some opinions then don't be afraid to share them!
You are completely right. You should never be afraid of voicing your opinion if it can improve the quality of something.
@@helenakri7282 The little mermaid is one of the most popular Disney movies. How is it the same?
With all the memes aside, I thought the movie was… better than most Illumination movies. That isn’t saying much, but it was fun, short and simple. It gave us a Vector cameo, and that’s amazing.
The cameo may be great but makes absolutely no sense. Gru is over fifty in despicable me and Vector is around twenty. In this movie Gru is just about eleven years old. So technically Vector isn't even born yet
@@JameiParodies get vectored
@@JameiParodies I was thinking the exact same thing. But… it’s a minions movie, can’t say I was expecting much sense
2 bots within 30 mins is impressive
That's fucking fantastic. How'd she get that gig?

@@poweroffriendship2.0 trust me, as someone from Puerto Rico, a certain scene in Minions had almost everyone dying of laughter.

To be honest EVERYONE are better written characters than Minions, yet Minions have the most screen time.

I remember back in the day when the minions were hated by a large majority, but now they are just an unstoppable force especially in the meme department
Cool pfp
Its because of constant bombardment of PR and Advertisement, oh and we’ve all collectively lost our minds.
I still fuckin hate them.
I freaking love the kung fu panda series.
Even those films try to break the mold somewhat, far more than anything the Despicable Me franchise adds to the table, that is for certain. Trolls has a creative handcraft art style for example.
Shrek as well
Home, I understand, but Trolls? Screw that, I'm not watching a movie that feels like a nothing story akin to Mamma Mia.
Ah yes, the gru redemption ark. A classic.
And then he grud all over the place

I get what you mean by Illumination "playing it safe" with their films. They're cute, family friendly and simple. But think about some of the most beloved animated films in the past:
Beauty and the Beast, Iron Giant, The Land Before Time, The Prince of Egypt, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda.
In what way did Land Before Time or Shrek push the envelope?
@@BJGvideos Land Before Time pushed boundaries on how dark animation directed for children could go, darker than even disney, and Shrek introduced modern culture, parody and soundtrack-based animation as well as popularizing CGI. Also it was the first winner of the Best animated feature award
@@keeranchang6485 Idk I'm pretty sure Land Before Time wasn't any darker than a lot of other movies. And Shrek wasn't the first kids movie to have pop culture.
yeah, I definitely agree that illumination was playing it safe with this film
Animation films that play safe are fine. But I am more intrigued on animations movies that pushed the boundaries. Like in Sea Beast.
Where the animators are not even afraid to show blood on a kids movie (i think) and, I forgot the girl's name, she grabs a dagger and almost stab Captain Crow and I was like "Ok now this is getting interesting."
I'm not saying I'm into violence but I am interested and intrigued on animated kids movies or not animated kids movies pushing the boundaries.
Was that a real joke in the movie?

Joking aside I really enjoyed this movie, there were elements that worked quite well. The comedy wasn’t as annoying and it was a treat to hear Steve Carell as Gru as always. The main issue I think is that, the movie doesn’t prioritise Gru’s rise oddly enough he has become the secondary character in his own franchise. Which sucks because the father son bond between him and Wild Knuckle was oddly wholesome and should have been the main drive.
This ISN'T his own franchise, it's the MINIONS franchise, MINIONS 2 not despicable me 2
Yeah for some reason the funeral part with wild knuckles stuck with me for a while because of its wholsomeness
I mean tbf this isn’t the Gru trilogy, he already had his. This is the minions trilogy.
But the fact that their movie’s plots often fall short, or the jokes in their movies make it fall flat is upsetting…
The Clay Calloway character looks SOOO good on the film. And to me it was crazy how everything else also looked pretty good. This studio knows what it can do, but it just refuses to do it. And that sucks…
I wish they gave themselves a chance to do something _more_.
Illumination outsources their animation to an animation company in France where the government give tax credits and write offs to arts projects like it
one reason they are always on or below budget
The studio itself does not do anything with the animation.

I can see that
And viceversa. Lightyear felt half like it was for nostalgia bait and half sci fi seriousness. A huge departure from even the Star Command series
@@Makocat But it ultimately failed because kids got bored very quickly from it.
What WOULD have been neat was the Wild Knuckle villain having the same arc as Gru in the first movie. This in turn foreshadowing Gru ending up doing the same. That would have been a neat wrap around. Should have spent more time with them and growing the villain father character a bit more. Go even deeper and have him sadly pass away during the final battle which in turn is what gives Gru the KICK he needed to defeat the other villains WITH the minions. except the first minion movie already answered that...
**Proof:**
In the Despicable Me and Minions films, we see the Minions interacting with Human society on a rather normal scale.
**Proof:**
In the starting paragraph, I mention that the Minions nearly went extinct from a brutal Minion Civil War. Rapidly altering the effected Minion's DNA and causing drastic changes regarding:
* Tooth and mouth structure
* Abnormal hair growth
* Eye color
* Skin pigment
* Physical structure
* Personality and behavior
Later in Despicable Me 2, we see Dr.
**Proof:**
Stalin and Hitler were both evil tyrants who would be seen as nothing more than soulless monsters to any human, but for the Minions, saying they were gods amongst Minion would be an understatement.
**Closure**:
It is unclear what happens after Gru gives chase to Dru at the end of Despicable Me 3, however it can be safely assumed that Despicable Me 4 will cover the complete extinction of the last remaining Minions as they battle it out through various means of chemical warfare over whether Gru or Dru is more evil.

Well this is beautifully twisted. I love it!
Compared to another franchise I simped for during childhood which I'm now a complete hater of, the Despicable Me/Minions series at least has some redeeming qualities :

I had a blast, the the theater laughed, that's what matters. Just let people enjoy things and ignore what you don't like.
I think what makes me sad is that Despicable Me 1 was a legitimately good movie, but they've been phoning it in ever since.
@Novi Rp13 The first Minions came out before the 3rd Despicable Me
The fact that rise of gru was more successful than lightyear
And no, the gay kiss wasn’t the main reason Lightyear bomb, even though the token lesbian who did the kiss dies early on.
Fr, I was thinking of seeing lightyear until I saw some reviews on it
I love it
Lightyear was a disaster I thought it was the worst Pixar film ever
But was it better
"Minions have their place in animation". I agree. Animation is for everyone and having good animated media for kids is just as important as having it for adults.
It's not good though. It's just not.
"Good". There's the problem. Nothing Illumination makes is "good". Their movies are lazy and forgettable at best.
@@littlemoth4956 banana
Honestly I thought Rise of Gru was a pretty wholesome and decent movie, better then the first Minions movie for sure.
I read this as better than the first despicable me movie and I was going to commit a murder
@@saxonstubbs7376 same. *puts knife back in my pocket*
I mean the bar was low. xD
I don't really think what's bad about the first one,I don't think it was that bad
I like the first minions movie better tbh
That fast food analogy is the perfect way to describe Illumination! I'm gonna have to use that from now on! 😄
I went with a group of friends and we all had a good time
This movie gave me everything I could've hoped for out of a Minions movie and more. It's truly the Citizen Kane of Illumination.
I unironically love despicable me as a standalone movie, also The Lorax low-key got a banger soundtrack, especially the cut song "biggering" slaps hard
when you replace the b with n

I feel this way sometimes when I'm being critical of certain movies and thats what alot of film critics neglect to understand. you can't judge every movie based on the same components, sometimes you see a poorly written movie but you just have to keep your mouth shut because it's not trying to be something amazing. it just wants to be dumb fun, and it succeeds at that
After I've watched it on Netflix, Minions: The Rise of Gru was really something.
Fun fact the people wearing formal clothes got banned from going to the movie theater, any and all suit were banned entry
This was because a lot of them started being a nuisance (this happened at the mall by me) and were being loud in the hallways of the movies and just wrecking havoc in the stores nearby.
215% on Rotten Tomatoes and you're treating it like this 😔
Truly sad 😔
He really did the movie of all time like that
Seeing people with suits watching the minons was funny
@Sabersраrк 🅥 I dislike you
I genuinely like the Despicable Me trilogy.
Well here's hoping Illumination don't mess up Mario next year.

Also I want to add, I like the self awareness about this whole deal, very understandable as someone who finds myself in that position in my head very often with things.
words cannot describe how i felt while watching minions rise of gru in theaters, it was a truly special experience, I really wasnt prepared to feel such emotions while watching minions rise of gru, the old man dying at the end left me in tears, overall, it was one of the best movies I have ever watched in my life, second best movie next to morbius, 11/10 would definitely recommend

@@kiplingwasafurry1108 then what do you think that he was saying?
They aren't masterful works like Dreamworlds or Disney but they also aren't terrible either especially when the studio does actually try.
imo, the point of Despicable Me 2 & 3 is that Gru has finished his character development, but other people keep trying to revert it, either maliciously or ignorantly
From his perspective, he's living the good life with a loving family.
Pixar has been hit or miss for the past decade
