Something people need to know, Netflix approval is something you get when you've been asked to shoot a piece for Netflix. Its a list of cameras that Netflix have pre-approved so that there isn't any confusion between filmmaker and executives when deciding what kind of quality Netflix needs to uphold when producing its originals. If you make a movie on you phone Netflix might still pick it up Steven Soderbergh films. Please don't let this kind of thing be something you consider when you're choosing a camera.
Yeah, I said it doesn't matter. But I think its important for industry perception and what cameras people take seriously. You can't pitch a film to netflix on your S5 - unless you shot it already.
@@impatrickt I apologize I didn't watch the video all the way through. I do have to say however you wouldn't pitch a film that you've already shot to Netflix anyway. Netflix inst the whole industry and I think that if people focus too much on what cameras they should be buying then the quality of their filmmaking goes down.
@@JamesHayes1 again I agree - but the industry, as a whole still does not take mirrorless cameras seriously. this is one step towards a much better future of cheap and accessible cameras that we can all use without any stigma. This is a great, informative video - thanks so much. I'm moving more into broadcast and the FS7 is super popular. However for non-broadcast work I've been using the Lumix S5 and really love the UI so think this camera could be a great shout to switch over to for a broadcast acceptable piece - but what would you say about the FS7 and this compared? I don't want to skip on an FS7 and regret it if there's a reason they're so damn popular for docs / TV I've just not realised...
Pretty apples to oranges between the FS7 and BGH1. Since you have an S5 I’d perhaps look at S1H or the Sony FX series. (FX3/FX6)
@@impatrickt Yeah guess I'm just thinking price-wise and broadcast accepted this ticks the boxes but FS7 is so popular in the TV industry. I've played with an FX6 and it's lovely, but at £5k for body alone I was hoping for something more pocket friendly! :)
Netflix approves this camera for original Netflix content, what it means, first of all project must be approved by netflix then you can choose between many cameras including this one, but only as a second camera. you can use whatever you want to do your documental or movie and if is interesting netflix will buy you and stream it.
Who said otherwise?
MFT is outmoded as a video format.
pocket 4k users would think differently
My iPhone films in HDR, that should also be approved for my Netflix series.
I’ll finance it.
I saw some feature Movies shoot on iPhones. utter crap quality. I want to throw up when see such shit on Netflix. I forgive Netflix much. even Cuties, but not filming wih iPhone. Sorry!
HDR doesn't mean "GOOD". The compression on phones is pretty terrible. Yes you can still shoot some pretty things (and I love challenging myself on a phone), but no, your phone is not filming the same quality as this prosumer cameras.
I think you're just using the pocket 4k incorrectly. I'm shooting a whole movie with it, CF cards drastically improves battery life. Just needs a lens and I can shoot all I need.
dRaStIcAlLy ImPrOvEs BaTtErY LiFe
and that 400 nit screen? the fact that it’s as wide as a fucking mac truck?
You mentioned the only thing that gives the pocket 4K a leg up is the raw? What about the fact that it's $800 less? And it has a monitor?
@@pfcaleb what about that it’s always a piece of shit to rig, has a shit monitor, shit batteries, and feels like a fisher price toy? I know of 3 pockets that have literally blown up on set. smoked themselves under long use.
Great video Patrick! It’s the longest from I’ve seen from you recently. It will do great. A LOT of creators are looking for an entry point in the Netflix world and this is a cheap ticket 🎫 but with great potential
I absolutely loathe long videos. Don’t get used to it! Lmao.
@@impatrickt hahaha nooooooo! It’s long but juicy so keep them coming!
Thank you for your quality videos!
In your opinion, BGH1 or S5 for Music videos?
S5
I’ve been think about moving away from Panasonic but now I’m going to reconsider. Also loved the Toyota Landcruiser. I have two of them on the back burner for restoration.
Amazing!
Its also PornHub approved as well.
That’s correct I did a double fisting scene with it the other day.
My guy how were I gonna tell us about cameras when you’re underexposed
If you think that’s under exposed you must hate movies and TV.
Thanks for reviewing this camera! I feel that it's very underrated and agree with everything you've said. I'm upgrading from a GH5 and felt that this might not be enough of an upgrade so was looking at the s1h but going full frame becomes very costly so this just might make sense for me
right on! id maybe wait to see what Blackmagic is going to announce on Wednesday and then make a decision from there!
Kastar has started producing BGH1 batteries. I would like Pro Res on this.
Amazing!
Gracias
Bro what, you look like Foggy from daredevil. Like straight uppp
I prefer my time in the mighty ducks
Really feels like the image is a bit more cinematic then the GH5. A bit softer I guess.
It’s not softer it just has better highlight retention and and the new Lumix color science.
@@impatrickt didn't know there was a new color science. So the vlog ia starting to be more accurate as if maybe the old vlog would be mixed up with a bit of the natural profile?
I myself shoot in cine D and having a hard time with the yellowish skin tones.
@@simonmonty7171 cine-d is one of the worst profiles I’ve ever seen on a camera. if you need a nice straight out of camera look shoot cine-v.
the GH5s and BGH1 use a different sensor than the GH5 so it’s always going to look different even with the same V-Log L. The BGH1 is tweaked to add an extra stop of DR making it the best of all the Lumix MFT cameras right now.
@@impatrickt I get you but I believe your opinion on Cine D is a bit drastic and would invite you check my latest video out. Might not be the best profile I agree, but the worst, I cannot agree. To each his own of course, but I feel it has not treated me too bad lately even If I made plenty of technical errors when it came to exposing, white balance, etc..
@@simonmonty7171 yeah it’s really the worst profile. makes skin look alien and the colors are just awful. you lose dynamic range as well.
Great video and channel, thanks! One questions... this camera have a internal ND filter? Thanks again!
on netflix there is High Flying Bird shot on iPhone, so no worries about the cam
An yes dune looked great shot on pixel 4.
You sound credible, but your lighting mmmm, needs a little work
nobody cares what you think
Great video Patrick very exciting times in the industry! Going to have to try one of these bad boys out, which monitor did you use?
I used the Shinobi here but also tried it with the Ninja V. Both are great!
Thank you very much, what camera would you recommend to make a movie, from the lowest range. the BMPC6K Pro is possible or with the Red Komodo.
The Lumix S5 is a great upgrade from your GH5.
I want to buy this camera, I have the gh5 and I like the color of the Lumix, can you tell us if more of this camera in another video, apparently it has a much higher focus and a greater dynamic range.
I gave it back already. It’s not a really a camera I would recommend for standard filmmaking. It’s more for speciality work and studio.
I’m getting this camera, it’s so good and has none of the corner warping found in other Panasonic cameras
The intro was insanely good, really like the flickers on the sensor... idk if that was intentional that you made it or it just came out like this when you filmed it maybe a table fan reflection or something but yeah awesome.
yeah im actually not sure what caused that! but agree it looked dope.
I cant change the past or why people think this way but we need to accept thats the way it is. its why people rig their sony's up and put matte boxes on. it sucks but it's true.
How is the auto focus?
check the pinned comment - if you have a good AF lens its pretty much the same as the GH5
4k as webcam ?
Great info 👍
The backwards hat hurt my feelings
Huh
Thanks for the video Patrick, I love the idea of a cube camera. At work I shoot on the FS7 and FS5 but I am always looking to go smaller. Your Broll made me smile, I worked in Toronto at The Score Sports Network as an editor years ago and your broll brought back memories of the real Toronto for me. Thanks.
Cheers Dave! Those FS cameras are still kicking and crushing it!
Hi! Thanks for an interesting review.
I think you can power it over the Ethernet port with PoE also.
it can now shoot BRAW
no it can’t. pro res raw.
Great review
