Epic III: Hades is Tricked Into Couples Therapy
That is literally the song in a nutshell and I love it-
😂
Bruh can I do that with my parents?
@@mckaleighwatson3942 yes. parent trap style but with a therapist in the room
Facts.
I think it's interesting how Orpheus says "a MAN in love with a WOMAN", when throughout the song the words 'girl' and 'boy' are used to describe Orpheus and Eurydice. I like to think that it signals the complexity that surrounds Orpheus and Eurydice's love, and Orpheus beginning to recognize it. They're no longer two naive lovers, but two tragic star-crossed adults, thrust into a world they weren't ready for. Orpheus realizes that he and Eurydice are more like Hades and Persephone, and that they can't go back to the way they were before.
That's sad nooo
Thats really nice and beautiful about it, it could also show that Hades was once like Orpheus a "boy" or young and naive with a heart of love but somewhere along the way he changed and became a man with a heart of greed that was empty and that Orpheus instead of becoming someone like Hades he's embracing what he has which is the same naive love and is changing that becoming a man he isn't like Hades but at the same time he showing that he was once the same and had the same heart, i dunno if i make sense
Far different from Romeo and Juliet in my opinion, they we're children naive and young
And in the case of Eurydice, not come back at all
OH MY GOD THEY MADE IT SO PERSEPHONE SINGS AT THE END WKTH HADES AND ORPHEUS HOLY SHITTTTT
I’m crying. We have been blessed to be alive in the same lifetime as this musical.
Look around, look around, look how lucky we are to be alive right now!

I adore this version (especially the parts from Hades and Persephone) but I do miss the parts where Orpheus talked about Hades' heart unhardening from that of a king to that of a man

I love how the start of Hades’ la la la part sounds like a gasp and has none of the powerful deep bass sound his voice usually has. After the first la Persephone sobs and encourages Hades to keep singing. Both of them had already been crying because I saw tear stains on both Patrick and Amber’s cheeks and it WRECKED me.
Thats what's beautiful about it, it showed he still had the same innocence and naivety of when he was in love, imagine falling in love and you try your best to sing to get her attention. It was adorable, Hades probably was embarrassed with himself and think about his deep voice, it seems threatening and scary so he tried his best to lighten his voice to make himself seem charming but came out as like a cry of help, Hades is adorable in that way.
the la la la section never fails to give me full body chills

I MISS THE PERSEPHONE IN THE GARDEN LINES THOSE LYRICS WERE AN ACTUAL BOMB
Look, I do really like the original Epic III and how it talks about Hades's heart unhardening and becoming the heart of a man rather than the heart of a king or a god. But I like how in this version, Orpheus almost sounds uncertain when he starts because of the mental and emotional trial he's just been through and is just starting to get his confidence back, and how it builds along with the song. And they're still touching on what it was like for Hades to have the heart of a man because Orpheus is reaching out to him saying that he knew how it felt, because he felt the same way, he's speaking to him as a man. Does that make sense?
Either way, it's a beautiful song.
I actually prefer this version over the original because I think it actually depicts a lot more subtle story rather than just being a really pretty song like the original version. Like yeah the old lyrics were really poetic and profound and stuff, but I like how this one starts with the very simple Epic I lyrics, almost as if Orpheus doesn’t know what to sing and is just spitting out his first draft. Then there’s the line “I know how it was because he was like me: a man in love with a woman.” At first I thought this line was super literal and clunky, but now I interpret it as him coming to a realization: that this whole time, Hades and Orpheus really were once the same person and went through the exact same experiences. The entire rest of the song is then completely new lyrics in which Orpheus projects his exact experiences onto Hades, directly referencing All I’ve Ever Known. Even the second half of the song with “he keeps his head low and he keeps his back bending” is a direct parallel to Orpheus working on his song, and I really like how we actually get to witness Orpheus’s realizations as well as the subtle transition from the incredibly basic Epic I lyrics to the stunning rest of the song. I’ll certainly miss how romantic and meaningful and breathtaking the original lyrics were, but I feel this version is more complex than people give it credit for.
2:26 counting all the "la"s to write the lyrics down must've been so much fun
This is so beautiful. No wonder this is what Orpheus was writing the whole time. I couldn't have believed the pressure on Anaïs Mitchell. She literally had to write a song so beautiful and miraculous that made people believe that it could touch the heart of a cold, petty man like Hades. This song is the entire backbone of the show. Basically if Epic iii sucks, then the while premise of the show would just fall apart. I love it so much
It’s the whole point of the musical and the story: that Orpheus’ love for Eurydice and his gift was powerful enough to convince the God of the Underworld, an adjacent devil incarnate, that to open his heart. Absolutely brilliant and beautiful.
God I’m not even two minutes into this and the line ‘and it was like she was someone you had always known’ has me DEAD. Ugh the parallels. Wow

So the cults of Persephone had a rule that the only person who could sing her name was Persephone herself. Hence why the workers only ever refer to her as Our Lady of the Underground and she introduces herself.
In the first verse Orpheus sings her name to sway Hades' heart. It was a risk that paid off for him when she sang with him later, allowing his audacious choice.
Orpheus, when he sings, summons a red carnation.
I headcanon that his finished song, at maybe 2:30, managed to bloom an entire meadow in the throne room itself. And hades, seeing persephone, as tired as she is, in that meadow, stirred his heart. He felt like a young man in love and that cracked his resolve just enough to really listen to orpheus.
As he realises all he gave up, how he ignored summertime herself and let jealousy ruin him, he begins to cry. And persephone cant help but smile and weep, herself. Surrounded by pinks and reds, the iron walls sprouting vines. For the first time in eons, hadestown is full of life and love.
Oh jesus thank you for making me cry this is a beautiful image
@@wuttatota148 id like to let you know, a year later that the imagery is changed a little:
"The melody rings out, the tentative warbling and delicate strings of orpheus' final epic. Hades' brow furrowed, gulping back emotion; until the very walls rose to echo the boy's song. His heart lurched and he sat up, his eyes settling on the cavernous cieling which had begun to crack, letting in pinpricks of sunlight.
Orpheus closed his eyes and furrowed his brow, the workers growing in volume, the melodies from every mouth weaving together.
Vines as thick as arms and roots that spread like hands began to stretch from where the boy stood; wrapping the chiseled stone throne, blooming into a great meadow of carnations, poppies, lilies; filling the room with a sweet scent of spring. The roof spread wider, and great thick oak trees materialised from the stone floor, pushing up and into the fresh air that, for the first time, seemed to truly fill hades' lungs.
The cacophony of the quire slowed, the last sweet red carnations springing up from beside hades' palm. Picking one, he frowned, and turned to look at persephone.
It had been eons since he had seen her look so young. Curiosity and wonder filled her face, forgetting the wrinkles and the dark circles under her eyes. How could he have forgotten how she used to smile and laugh in the spring, how she would sign and rest her head on his shoulder in fall.
Tears pricked at the old kings' eyes.
It was just like back then.
And he fell in love all over again.
This reads like a novel omg this is such a magical interpretation of that scene. Makes me wish for an animated adaptation of hadestown so we can have these visual imageries realized

I will forever be grateful that I found an animatic of the first version of the recordings. I feel like nothing is better than discovering it will hit broadway and then waiting months for the official recordings. And then discovering it surpassed all your expectations. Beautiful story, beautiful songs and just a beautiful musical in general.

Oh my god I can’t wait to see it in summer :D
The fact that I always thought Hades said “Don’t dwell me” instead of “Oh it’s about me”. I am flaberghasted at this revelation

If you read the original lyrics, the meaning is far more profound than in this version. I understand that adding more parallels to Orpheus' story ties the musical as a whole together, but it detracts from the masterpiece that was the live recording. For instance, the way the song describes Hades' heart vs the heart of a man and proclaiming that suddenly Hades had softened his heart when he saw Persephone, if only because she was the only person he didn't feel superior to in the way a king is superior to his subjects. (as the song claimed he no longer had the heart of a king once he laid his eyes on Persephone's rare and pure beauty). Even the way the describe every detail of the first time he saw her was, well, detailed and kind of romantic. Before Persephone he had loved everything as "the hammer loved the nail", meaning that he can only love materially, always understanding that people work together, but never knowing the true sensation of love. Yet, after being with Persephone for a while, he finally begins to love her as he loves everything else -- completely materially. This is where the downfall of the relationship lies. In fact without the line "the heart of a king who loves EVERYTHING like a hammer loves a nail", the line "what has become of the heart of that man now that he has EVERYTHING" loses its profound meaning. When he refers to the word 'everything' in the second verse, he is saying that Hades saw Persephone as everything, thus loving her as he did everything else. With this, he lost the one thing he ever truly loved. The original was so artistically and poetically tragic, that it's frankly saddening that Anaïs didn't keep those lyrics.
This happened to most of the songs. I still love this show so much but the original lyrics were just so much better to me and didn't dumb anything down.
Atleast we get to have so many versions, like we have atleast 3 versions of this musical masterpiece.

I’m crying this is such a beautiful song
Honestly I love this one better then the original. The parallels were missing in the original, which is the whole point of the story. The world was out of tune because the love between Hades and Persephone was broken. He isn’t the bad guy and both of their relationships grow so much. It also sounds more raw and pure. As if he’s really just doing this on the spot. He even uses the beginning part of Epic I like he doesn’t know what to say. Then, he just sings from his heart. He expresses his inexpressible love for Eurydice so it’s not perfect but that’s what makes it so beautiful. But in those exact words Hades sees his love for Persephone. Orpheus then realizes the connection between him and Hades, and that’s a connection he discovers AS he’s singing. That connection gave him the answers but also gave him doubt. In this version, you can truly realize the complexity in the character’s emotions and thoughts. This raw realization, connection, and emotion is what truly moves Hades. Orpheus unknowingly retelling of their story with such detail is what rekindles their love. And at the end hades softly sings the melody as if he’s remembering it again for the first time. When Orpheus and Persephone join it a sign of love and understanding. And while the metaphors in the other one were profound, it doesn’t give you the pureness that this one does.
the parallels were there they just weren't spoon fed to you

I much prefer the original version of Epic III.
I like that they kept the original melody, but I prefer the lyrics of the original. It sets up the second half of the song better.
The only problem i have with this musical is that it didnt show the song he sang for caronte and none of his adventure alone but i get it the musical wasnt about that
2:08
You know what... I’m gonna say it... I’m massively disappointed at 2:48
The original, and the bootleg I’ve seen, have all the voices practically shouting it to the heavens. They all sound like they’re trying to be too pretty and sound like they’re almost singing the most anticipated melody of the story so quietly. I just so wish the voices were as strong in the recording studio than they are on stage. It just does not do it justice. T_T
I also kind of feel like they robbed the song of their folk kind of music that had very traditional, kind of castle-town sounding musicians playing along. It feels really.. pop-ish or kind of like jazz now. I love jazz, but I just feel like this song shouldn’t have been changed at all honestly... it was so perfect the way it was.
I hadn't really found a comment that vocalized it this well until now. It really does feel like all the folk has been robbed. The deep beats and the throb of it is just muted mostly.
the lyrics too. i really love the original one; it was poetic and had structure. this one tho? it sounded off and too prosy, which kind of weakens the whole "orpheus is an amazing bard/musician" thing they have going on. tho, to be fair i get that with the original one they wanted the musical to have a folk/grounded feel to it and now that its on broadway i guess they wanted it to sound "fuller"/more complete and that orpheus' musical style is that of a rock star.
The live one is better.
Patrick page can sing. Why does he sound so out of tune here
As beautiful as this is, I miss the original lyrics terribly. This just does not capture the emotion quite right.
Tbh I'm not a fan of Reeves Falsetto, when he goes high like when he sings the words "Beautiful Lady" I cringe a little. Just cause he can go that high dosent mean they should use it so much. I wish they hadn't changed the part where it went "his heart unhardened, and suddenly Hades was only a man, with his hat in his hands and nothing to loose" the part where he sings "his arms outstretched" just sounds out of place and bad
All the new changes are clunky. I’m so disappointed in this production.
WHAT!!! Really???? I thought the changes were amazing and every new line is so symbolic!!!
Gabriela Thomas
They mess with the flow, and some come off fairly patronising. It really breaks the “show it, don’t say it” rule of musical theatre.
Hermes is prevalent now to the point of annoyance.
The London run literally had to make tiny changes to border perfection, but they’ve gone so far that they’ve gone backwards with the changes.
@@CynicalCharmer I agree. I still love this show but I feel like they've dumbed down the lyrics to explain what's going on. When the original was more subtle and didn't have to clearly spell out obvious things.
In this song for example do we really need Hades to say "how do you know that melody?" wheb the audience could pick up for themselves that it's Hades and Persephone's melody.
@@CynicalCharmer Hm, to be honest this is a very interesting take and I can see where you're coming from. Some of the lyrical changes are kinda clunky, and it is a little more based around like narration. Also, the dynamic between certain characters like Eurydice and Persephone has been almost ignored in a way in the Broadway version. However, I at least think vocally and cheorghy wise the play is a lot better, I like Evas take on Eurydice and how she is a lot softer. So I can see both sides to why people like and don't like the newer version.
@@gabrielathomas4783 Anybody who has seen them both knows that the Broadway version is in a completely different planet and practically incomparable. The NYT review pretty much nails it. The Off-Broadway version was clever and hip and too cool for itself. The Broadway version is a masterpiece. The lyric changes were in the interest of the narrative. The old lyrics were too poetic, symbolic and hazy. The ONLY thing not as good is Reeve Carney's falsetto, but he has other things going for him that I believe make him better than Daunno who really was just a pretty falsetto and nothing else. Doubt Comes in is so much better on Broadway, that the Live version is barely listenable.
I much prefer west end ngl. Broadway version sucks and isn’t nearly as poetic
And they danced...
