Chris Simms spent the entire pre-draft buildup (months!) saying that Drake Maye had great physical skills and leadership skills, but was also extremely raw, with some worrisome mechanical and mental flaws that may not be able to be fixed unless the Patriots give him his full rookie contract to develop.
He's been right wayyy more than he's been wrong, but people only remember the wrong ones. Hackenberg was the worst one IMO, he literally can't throw. A lot of people hold Zach Wilson against him, but EVERYONE thought Wilson was the top 2 pick, so it's clear it was probably the Jets that ruined him rather than him being bad.
Saying Drake Maye is a low of the rookie QBs is hilarious. He’s been solid with a couple shaky days. I think he’s thrown 2 INTs, one being not his fault. Caleb Williams threw back to back INTs in practice last week lol.
I have a question the trade deadline even if Adams want to go to the Jets can you do that or can he just steal Jordan love I'm just asking questions 🍀🍀🌺🌺
From an outsider perspective (ie: clear out in the desert southwest), my assumption was that Brissett is there to be the starter till that point they feel Maye is ready, which could very well be next season. Letting rookies sit is not always a bad idea. Jordan Love probably would have been awful as a rookie. The Andrew Lucks, Russell Wilsons and CJ Strouds are the exception, not the norm (and even Wilson needed several games to really start to gel his rookie year).
I was on record for aaying it didnt matter who New England drafted at QB, they were going to be a bust, not because of the rookie but because that organization doesnt have the structure in place to support anyone. You could put rookie Andrew Luck on this team and 2 years from now he's considered a bust. Should have traded with MN and given Drake a chance.
@@donnieherzog1403 So glad to hear it! Broncos have been bad and boring for a decade. I hope we can at least score some points and even if we lose there is hope!
Rookie QBs used to get 2-3 years to develop. Now they get 2-3 weeks before they start getting labeled as “busts”. It’s insane. Some of the best QBs of all time had TERRIBLE rookie seasons. But then when they got some talent around them, they flourished. Feel bad for guys like Bo Nix and Drake Maye that went to the 2 worst rosters in the league and are expected to be high level starters day 1. With no proven weapons to throw to and below average O lines. Then you got guys like Caleb and JJ that went into stacked teams with some of the best weapons in the league. Can’t really compare all the rookies on the same scale. The talent around them matters tremendously.
Running for his life throwing bad passes lying on a stretcher after week 2, then sitting on bench for 7 games playing one more game, then riding bench for 3 years on another team
JJ McCarthy is the real deal....I've watched much of his training camp and he could start week one and be fine. (Of course KOC will start Sam) Expect JJ to start 4-6 weeks into the season.
Big Bill will be the New Head Coach of The Dallas Cowboys next Season. We all tried to tell Patriots Fans that Life would be rough after Brady. They didn’t realize how good they actually had it for all those years. Its going to be a long year for NE Fans and Dallas Cowboys Fans
Rich, while I normally do not agree with your Jet jaded view of New England sports, I do agree with the need to let Drake May marinate for a year or two to get NFL ready. Mac Jones got phuqued by BB after season one. Mac beat out an MVP QB to start year one, made the Pro Bowl, and was well on his way to becoming a serviceable if not top tier QB under Josh McDaniels. Letting Mc Daniel’s go to Oakland and not replacing him with a true OC killed Mac’s career. Hopefully, the Pats will let Drake become the QB that he has the potential to be. I love BB and all he has done for New England sports and the region. I truly believe he is the best Coach the NFL has ever seen. Doing what he did to Mac lead to his final days in NE. It was time for him to go. Hopefully, Drake gets the time to become a good NFL QB. Even Brady with his early success was considered a “system QB” for his first 5 years or so in the league. He sat out his first season and only got playing time when Bledsoe went down. Give Drake a chance.
Your rookie QB can't be the backup who is supposed to save the day if things goes sideways. You got to protect the kid. Start Drake and let him play under the security blanket of the reliable, experienced backup on the bench. He has to play.
No matter who the Patriots picked they would be going through Lows rn while everyone else was on a high. They could've gotten the best QB in the Draft & everyone that did nothing but praise him would immediately have flaws to talk about. I'm not going to miss these 'shows' when their run finally ends.
Thing that people don't understand is it's not Tom Brady and it's not just Bill belichick It's the fact that we do not have a front line whatsoever. We couldn't even have a run game if we wanted to. And then you bring in anyone they're not going to do well. Nonetheless the fact that we do not have a wide receiver. All those years of winning is coming back to bite us because we don't have any backups. I'm just going to be happy with what we can do this year. I love brissett. I really don't like the draft for this year but I do like mayo. Let's go?
Why didn't New England take Penix? He was the best QB in my eyes coming out of college. And I'll say this in 5 years he will be the QB out of this Draft.
Good talk to those pats fans they are buggin. I deal with the same expectations in denver all day. If a qb has one bad practice they are a bust but if they throw a couple of tds one time they are the future goat
@@dannyquilter8366 Was a Top 10 QB in aggregate on the season, and finished the year from Week 12 on with the highest passing grade. But yes, obviously he isn't Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes, but he can be proof that sitting your QB before "throwing to the wolves" has advantages
I still don't see why a guy listed as 'a project' was taken 3rd overall. 'Big upside' a LOT of times means future bust. It's not Drake Maye's fault he was taken 3rd and anything short of TB part 2 is a bust, it's the Patriots' fault. 'Edited additon: THANK YOU, RICH! 'New England media...YOU DRAFTED A PROJECT!'
Anybody freaking out about rookies in training camp and preseason. Remember Chase and how he couldn't catch anything in camp or preseason games? Than he has the best rookie season ever for a wr, beating the record breaking season by his close friend J Jefferson
I completely agree with Rich's take on Maye but I don't believe he'd have the same take if it was the Commanders with Maye and he was looking bad in camp. They'd be killing the Commanders for Maye looking exactly like what everyone said he would at the start. Pats get free passes from the media.
A Bostonian once expressed how pissed he was with the Red Sock's season and it was the third game of 162. Some people have no other thrill in life other than sports...I get it, but it still a bit sad...
they are the underdog in every single game this season. Not one game are they favored to win right now lol. That D can carry a game or two maybe, but i doubt it
It’s certainly possible. Worst offense in the league last year, and all they really did was swap Jones/Zappe for Brissett. Defense was good last year, but they might not be as good without Belichick. They also lost Barmore for possibly the season, and Judon is still a ? Maybe Drake will be good eventually, maybe some of these new rookies will be good. But right now on paper there really aren’t any improvements from last year.
As a Bears fan, midway through last year’s season I started scouting QB’s just to check out what was available as it was obvious the Panthers were going to be a favorite to land a top 2 pick. Maye was supposedly 1b to Caleb’s 1a at that point. Watched 3 complete games of his at UNC. You can see the physical tools obviously, but I didnt like his long release and I thought his arm strength and even deep ball, which was supposedly a strength, was less than expected. Inconsistent, talent didn’t jump off the screen. He’s like a Temu version of Josh Allen coming out from a talent perspective, except stories like Josh Allen where the lightbulb finally goes on… most guys never truly figure it out. I said months before the draft, I wouldn’t take Maye with a top 10 pick. Felt very vindicated, when Chris Sims, a QB evaluator I respect, came out and had the exact same opinion I had regarding his issues and prospect ranking. He sucks and has a ways to go to be anywhere near worthy of the number 3 overall pick.
"I love that guy" Yea...until you've got 7 total wins after 2 full seasons (which is my prediction) will be a different tune then. But but but his press conferences were 'refreshing"
Couldn’t agree more the fact people are saying the ghost of Mac jones after 2 non pads training camps is DISGUSTING we knew the kid wouldn’t really be ready this year can we please stop over reacting to every little thing in Boston I know there’s nothing else to put on the air right now but PLEASE I don’t care what’s happening in training camp give him time
I really don't understand why there's so much criticism for Drake Maye (I actually think he's a bust) when everyone knows he's not starting this year. I get that you want your 1st round 3rd pick to do well and criticism is deserved but everyone knows he wasn't drafted to start this year but in future years. Lets talk about other players on the Patriots in the meantime.
Sam Howell significantly outplayed Drake Maye while at UNC. Cade Klubnik, with little help from Offense and help from Clemson Defense easily beat Maye & UNC. The point is Drake Maye has a lot of work to do.
lol at the patriots. had a chance to trade down, get an extra 1st and, draft the best qb in the class in penix but instead chose maye whose stock is based entirely on projections and potentiallys.
I don't get it. Are these players not under contract? So basically they want their contract extended before it expires? They at this point don't have a legal leg to stand on!
@toredperson6574 Mac Jones wasn’t even the issue.. he played amazing his rookie year, then they let the decent WR’s they had walk in FA and let Matt Patricia call offensive plays.. single worst coaching decision in history. That set Jones back big time and then last offseason they let the best WR’s on their bad team (Nelson Agholor) walk and his #1 WR last year was JuJu.. averaged 26 yards a game and that was his #1 WR.. not to mention their offensive line became one of the worst lines in the league, and after having a bad season with Patricia calling plays they let more guys walk and drafted defense in the top half of the draft, 1st offensive player they took was an O-lineman at the end of the 4th round.. they just let that offense fail and try to blame Jones, any QB would’ve played bad behind that awful offense
He has to learn everything new. New city, new playbook, new route to and from work, new food, new coaching staff, new owner (technically no owner in college sports wink wink). I don't think there have been very many rookie who look perfect in the first week of training camp. None. So let drake breath and wait. It's not like the patriots have the roster to win the afc east let alone a playoff game or god forbid the super bowl.
Drake Maye had not played enough college football. Drafting him in the 1st round makes fantasy football legends think that he is ready to play. He needs work.
Brady left as soon as he saw the AFC becoming loaded with young elite QB's. He played in the weakest division for the longest period of sports. ANY sport. 2 full decades filled with crappy QB's and even crappier NFL coaches. And where did he go to? The weakest division in football the last 5 years. They don't call him Shady Brady for nothing.
@@junehanzawa5165shocker crappy divisions lead to dynasty. Take a look at the afc west for a current example. Also acting like manning,Ben,rivers along w early mahomes isn’t incredible competition
Belichick's weak spot was/is handling new offenses that are not led by Tom Brady. Calling him the GOAT head coach is a little like awarding a trophy for driving skill to someone seated behind the wheel of a self-driving car. From 2001 through 2019, he could throw just about anyone into the offense and Brady would make them a pro bowl contender and give them a shot at the postseason. All Bill Belichick needed to worry about was his strong suit: defense. Because he had the wisdom to "stick with the hot hand" in 2001 when he was on the hot seat, he IS a HoF coach... not the GOAT, however.
How is Rich not in tune with what McCarthy has been doing in training camp? He’s arguably progressed higher and faster than any of the QBs drafted. KOC said Darnold is #1 on the depth chart going into camp solely because of his NFL experience and not rushing JJ right off the bat. People attending Vikings training camp have said McCarthy has looked like the best QB and supposedly it hasn’t been close the past couple days. He’s already earned the respect from everybody and is earning first team reps. Sounds like he’s closing in quickly and very well could start week 1. Preseason will show a lot, so we shall see. All I will say is JJ has looked light years ahead of Bo Nix at this point training camp.
Ive seen more about people burying McCarthy than praising him. It was literally on this show like 2 days ago Rich said "i dont even think hes on 3rd string snaps"@@IcyNorseman
JJ attempted 6 passes and threw 4 tds with the second team going against the first team defense a couple of days ago. His second pass was a 50 yard bomb for a TD. The highlights are on youtube.
This was all in his film. Too many scouts were emphasizing his potential “high ceiling” instead of the reality that he’s erratic and.struggles with accuracy.
As much as I'd like it if Drake Maye was a bust, he was drafted on potential and not considered someone who could come in and start right away. Consider that Josh Allen was beaten out for the starting job in camp his rookie season by Nathan Peterman.
Mac jones made the pro bowl AS AN ALTERNATE. yall really gotta start putting and asterisk after these "pro bowlers" who went because someone else didnt feel like it. Mac jones was like the 3rd or 4th alternate selection
You're on spot Rich, I did not expect him to start, but I don't know what the "it's only week one" people expect the alternative to be? Are we just not supposed to talk about the new rookie QB after we've waited all summer frothing at the mouth speculating on how he'd look? People aren't killing the kid, IMO, they are confirming their earlier predictions from the draft as to whether he looks NFL ready immediately like Jones did. We did the same debate with Jones in 2021 but if you pull the clips from that camp he was absolutely slinging it like a dog and he picked up the playbook right away and was out and out better than Cam Newton, a former 15-1 record league MVP guy. It's totally fine to comment that Maye is not doing that and thus he should probably sit until he starts wowing us. I hate this conversation policing that goes on whenever people feel like their bias is in danger.
I'm all in on Drake Maye he's gonna be fine&no Mac Jones was not good his rookie year. He was solid for a rookie but if Jones was good then, then what happened? Maye was seen by most as development-QB and since the Patriots have as terrible a roster as any team in the NFL the longer he sits the better
I laughed so hard when the Patriots drafted Maye at 3. I'm obviously not a Pats fan. But these reports mean nothing to me. The simple fact is that Drake never played in a pro offense, always depended on his feet, has never stood in a pocket and delivered a pass and has never shown any ability to go through a progression. And until you do, you can't. The odds are long that he ever will be a good pocket passer. I dont see it.
Zolak is the one who said we should worry first! he said its pk#3 maye should at least being showing some kind of flash of brilliance or at least outplay brisset! but meh... we could of had Harrison JR and gotten our generational talent and Milton could have been the project.
Lmao, so national media has no clue what's going on in Minnesota. Clearly, no one has paid attention to anything that has happened there since OTAs in the spring. Maybe no one has even looked at MN since draft night. What basis do you have for saying that JJ is going to be sitting to start the season, when through the first 3 training camp days McCarthy threw 15 TDs and 1 INT. Darnold has 4 TDs and 3 INTs. Coach KO just said McCarthy is going to now be getting a lot more reps with the first team offense going forward. But we ignore all of that and just throw out a one sentence that "JJ is sitting behind Darnold." Minnesota the fly over state just doesn't even exist in national media lmao.......whatever.
He has a real shot to be the future of the franchise, and even if he’s old, sitting for a year or two in the league is almost never a bad thing for a QB fresh out of college.

He's been right once and that was Allen. Outside of that, he's been wrong

Rich is behind on McCarthy
I was on record for aaying it didnt matter who New England drafted at QB, they were going to be a bust, not because of the rookie but because that organization doesnt have the structure in place to support anyone. You could put rookie Andrew Luck on this team and 2 years from now he's considered a bust. Should have traded with MN and given Drake a chance.
I do not except May to start until October because it’s too early
I hope Nix is good because my team has been boring and dreadful near a decade at this point. How the Broncos have fallen smh.

Bo is gonna surprise a lot of people💯

I like the Coach Mayo vet card play. "I been through this and you (media) have not". Do u think a "us vs them" narrative is brewing?
No matter who the Patriots picked they would be going through Lows rn while everyone else was on a high. They could've gotten the best QB in the Draft & everyone that did nothing but praise him would immediately have flaws to talk about. I'm not going to miss these 'shows' when their run finally ends.
David Unction has turned some heads in camp this year, but a FA doesn’t garner the same attention as an nth-round draft pick.
As a dolphins fan, I love Jarod mayo lol
Thing that people don't understand is it's not Tom Brady and it's not just Bill belichick It's the fact that we do not have a front line whatsoever. We couldn't even have a run game if we wanted to. And then you bring in anyone they're not going to do well. Nonetheless the fact that we do not have a wide receiver. All those years of winning is coming back to bite us because we don't have any backups. I'm just going to be happy with what we can do this year. I love brissett. I really don't like the draft for this year but I do like mayo. Let's go?
Rich speaks slowly and it can draaaaag
Why didn't New England take Penix? He was the best QB in my eyes coming out of college. And I'll say this in 5 years he will be the QB out of this Draft.
Good talk to those pats fans they are buggin. I deal with the same expectations in denver all day. If a qb has one bad practice they are a bust but if they throw a couple of tds one time they are the future goat

What do Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes have in common? They sat on the bench their first year in the league.

Thanks, Rich, for finally admitting what broke Belichick.
Bo Nix spent the same amount of time in college as Van Wilder basically. Why are we comparing the two?
That’s why Drake was good for the Giants. They have DJ for another couple years and then Drake could have taken over. Pats needed #1 help now.
A Bostonian once expressed how pissed he was with the Red Sock's season and it was the third game of 162. Some people have no other thrill in life other than sports...I get it, but it still a bit sad...
Bo nix is like thirty, I hope he had a decent camp by now
Pats were 4 and 13 last year. They cant be THAT bad this year...can they?
Idk. Their offense was 31st last year. They could always be 32nd this year
Their roster is pretty bad
they are the underdog in every single game this season.
Wait until they are 0 - 4 or 5 and see how friendly he is to the media.
Concerning Drake Maye. Rich needs to ask Mark Schlereth about Heath Schuler!!!!!
lol at the patriots. had a chance to trade down, get an extra 1st and, draft the best qb in the class in penix but instead chose maye whose stock is based entirely on projections and potentiallys.
I don't get it. Are these players not under contract? So basically they want their contract extended before it expires? They at this point don't have a legal leg to stand on!
3rd overall pick isn't supposed to be a "project" ...
Maybe Mac Jones needed to change jersey numbers. 10 is apparently cursed.

Here's a trivia question for you: name the first quarterback Bill Belichick won a game with as a head coach in the NFL. Don't look it up.
Drake maye locks eyes to his target straight from the snap. NFL dbs going to eat off him
Said the same about Brock Purdy smh
North Carolina is not known for QB's. Shockerrrrrr
Maye will be fine. He dosent need to start right away. It would ruin him. The Patriot don't have protection & help for him.
You people are so annoying
Hold the Mayo
I hate media during training camp
Joe Milton has outplayed Drake every day.
Not the past two days, lol
