I feel like this statement is only true if your tanks or dps are bad. Then you’re forced to take aggressive positions with Ana or zen to try and get big antis or big burst shots

I honestly don't know if it's your aim. Many characters are so god damn thin that it's very difficult to hit them. Combine that with jumping being a thing the game encourages and lots of things doing low damage, and it's hard to get kills. Often I can get more kills by doing intelligently controlled random patterns, which is terrible. In other FPS games where bullets do damage and character models are normal, I could shoot someone in the head across the map.
Want to get better?? Stop taking halfassed advice form delusional Gm players. Find 5 other players and play together. Watch Owl/Contenders. The actually really good players who play ow "CORRECTLY". I know i sound like an ass but those 1% players understand and play the game significantly better than 99.99% of content creators. The skill level and game knowledge is worlds apart.
@@O1OO1O1 then its definitely your aim. Jumping makes hitting shots easyer not harder and the only hitboxes who are really hard to hit are Tracer, Ana and DVA and tbh i think it's more Tracers mobility that makes her hard to hit not her hitbox.
@@dutchproxx6453 nope, my aim is fine. I can't predict their movement, avoid death while my team do nothing useful, and headshot their skeleton bodies at the same time. Ashe, Widow, Sym, and even Zen to some degree are thin. Then you have the BS of characters not having clear heads. Hitting DVAs head is like a virgin trying to find a clitoris.
I go about 2 seasons before getting back to diamond, when I'm there I get so exhausted from how muh I've played I usually take a break and drop back down, keep going as long as your win percentage is higher than 50 you'll climb all be it at a slow pace but it still happens nonetheless
I really appreciate guides like this. The mechanic stuff/combos/techs are cool, but learning how to play the game overall (rather than character specific) is really cool
Videos on pathing alone would be amazing. So often in lower levels players quite literally run it down main rather than dealing with high ground or just dodging dmg
Bro Hanamura is such a good example of this. Window is so under utilized on first point. Sym strat is almost guaranteed if your team takes tele. On first and second point.

Getting out of elo hell is so much better if you duo queue, just stay as a team as soon as you find a good player in your lobby. Oh and whenever you notice you have a 50+% win rate you just have to keep playing a lot. The mistake I made in elo hell was thinking I was hard stuck but I actually had a 55% win rate and just didn't play enough games. I went silver to plat within 2 weeks when I started doing these things so anyone can do it. Good luck tho!

Despite the video I think tanks are still good. They just need supports more to enable them to really do work nowadays. Good tank + bad support = you lose Good support + bad tank = you got a chance Good tank + good support= put the team on your back.
@@slandergames9494 that makes no sense. You just said tanks are still good, but if your tanks are good and sups bad, you lose and when both roles are good (aka 4/6 of your team) you win (d'oh).... Rein is terrible now, just play ball, hog or sigma, other tanks feel like throw picks in general but especially Rein.

yeah, I used to play more bap, moira maybe mercy. But now it's Zen, Brig Ana all the way. I'm even out-healing on brig and zen a lot of the time, just by being in the fight when it happens, getting ult super fast by making plays. It's crazy.
I imagine when people say "healers are the weakest role", they really mean its the most frustrating role when you get on a team of randoms that refuse to coordinate anything as a team. Ruins the whole game.
Mercy does also go in this category. You get the most value on mercy by NOT healing tanks. You get value by dmg boosting heroes to max value and letting the other healer heal the most

Playing tank is such a horrible experience right now. With all of the nerfs across the board and the DPS and support buffs, it just feels like all the carry potential has been taken out of your hands. You have to play perfectly to get a single elimination. As a tank, but especially main tank, you just het bullied by over half the characters in the game and sometimes you simply can't do anything about it. Tank is the most easily and widely countered role in the game. Sombra and Mei hard counter every tank in the game and make it impossible for you to do your job simply by existing. Beyond that, with shields being at an all-time low, the current superpowered DPS dish out some huge damage to tanks, who are the biggest, fattest targets on the screen. It just feels like you're so dependent on your teammates to win. I'll have games where I do enormous amounts of work, create lots of space but my supports will just hide in the back of the map while other games I get utterly hard carried. People still think that tanks are by far the strongest role in the game. Tanks have to do everything. Tanks have to make space, counter the Widow, protect the team, set up the team, get eliminations, and if even the slightest thing goes wrong it's always a 'tank diff'. I enjoy playing Ball, I've mained him for a while now and I recently hit masters but I dropped back to diamond. I will get flamed to kingdom come before the game has even started for playing Ball and I find that in lower ranks there are so many people who just command you to play Rein Zarya no matter if the map is good for it. It's always Rein Zarya, on every map, every time. And when you do swap and go aggro, they whine because you didn't play rectangle man and hold up the shield. DPS and supports hardly seem to think independently as they expect you to constantly hold the shield up instead of trying to set up flanks or angles. Honestly, the most frustrating part is that tanks are the scapegoat every single time. It's always a 'tank diff', no matter what. And it's not just the rare "you're trash". No, I get told to end my life once every 5 games with the others having a 50/50 chance of being blamed or flamed.

Welcome to overwatch. Where most dps have a no skill one button team wipe, heroes with low skill and high reward plague the game and characters that take skill get nerfed.
the amount of times i started maining someone in meta and blizzard just nerfs them in 2 weeks, its so bad. now im stuck playing lucio because he hasnt got nerfed since goats.
One note for your Ana, Freedo, I noticed that you’re using your nanos primarily for damage combos (e.g. NanoVisor,NanoBlade) while you could use it to enable a tank that’s in trouble (e.g. you’re roadhog and sigma on critical hp). I also noticed that you’re sleeps tend to go into targets that you just see you can hit, but you could be using it to stop flankers, deny the high noon inside the grav, etc. I don’t want to be mean or sound condescending, just thought I mentioned somethings I noticed. :)
They worst is say your on kings row attack and you just took point and now your moving up to see is you can get so late spawns or stragglers and take space early. Only to get killed my two because everyone is sitting on the fucking cart!!! I cant tell you how frustrating it is when everyone want to sit on cart we dont need 4 ppl on cart.

"Supports are just dps with heals" Wtf. No. Supports are guardians and strategists that use defensive abilities to thwart the enemy's attempts to wipe their team. It's depressing that Overwatch seems to have forgotten that. If your idea of a good time is fragging out, that's fine but _que as a dps to do it._ Some of us actually LIKE defensive playstyles, and enjoy protecting our teammates more than dueling enemies.
Hey freedo, not sure if you can help but I’ll ask anyway. Nowadays on console (Xbox) it seems about 17/20 games are reliably smurf majority and about 4/15 games end with you being ddossed. This is a widespread issue that I’m sure many other players are experiencing. With that stuff being said, how do you recommend navigate this chaos? Yesterday my own team in ranked booted me offline multiple times, and I’ve checked and blizzard is flat out denying the issue. Any chance you know what’s going on? I’m trying really hard, but I think if they leave the game like this I won’t be able to bear even looking at the game anymore
Thank you for making map guides. When I first started playing a couple years back I looked for videos of that, I could tell that we should be fighting for some spots and giving some others up for preferable territory. However I couldn't find anything about positioning or any sort of map guides. I've learned a lot since then but I know I still don't choose the most optimal place for fights sometimes, would be fantastic to have it more spelled out to use
Tbh if you want to play dps support its better to learn a real dps support like Ana, lucio, zen, baptise, if you want to climb there is a point where every one can 1v1 a moira, there is a point in ranked where suddenly people can aim and beat moiras, but if you play lucio you got an awesome ult and can dive, baptise can destroy echos and pharas and save tanks whit inmortality, if you learn to hit head shots whit zen and learn where to stand you are basicaly gm.
@@reynauldwhistles2338 ya ik that it was more of a joke, I have been playing supports "wrong" for as long as I can remember. My first DPS was Moira, I then switched to Zen and then got into a very reddit Lucio style and easily climbed 2 ranks cuz I could stall point forever and 1v1 everyone in that rank. He is still my most played. Now I am more of a Bap player and I do end up 1v1ing everyone in the game every chance I get. The only reason I don't play Ana is cuz I never heal with her at all, I treat her like widow but with better cooldowns.
I agree. Another video idea that I got from some text you laid out in Havana. You mentioned that the high ground on left mini is the strongest position for streets. Maybe hit up Karq and do a strongest position for every map video.
Got my friend to watch this video and then we queued up. The results were pretty much instant. The change in mentality from how I used to play support a few months ago (as I am now returning from a short break) is enough to break games open. Still a lot to improve though, and the good thing is after watching a video like this it is so much easier to spot your mistakes when you have a playstyle to follow. I definitely had an easier time on escort/hybrid maps. When you do the advanced guide please make sure you cover tips for each map type (I'm not sure if u do that anyway). Also this is day 1 before I have looked at any of my vods so lots of improvement on my end needed.
I think some players seeing this content think that offensive value is equal to higher damage numbers at the cost of healing output, but what we're referring to (at least in the case of Ana) is the playmaking value of off angle anti nades, push stopping sleeps, and better shot weaving in between heals right?

I find it very interesting that you posted this video now because, for the past 2 days I have been almost exclusively playing Ana in ranked and won basically every game (which really doesn't happen often in diamond). I've been using funky positions and throwing anties/dpsing and it works way more now that it used to.
Bro, I feel this in my soul. I've literally baited 3 enemies way off point to come get me before and kited/cheesed them for like 20-30 seconds before and my team STILL don't win the fight. Like how is it a 5v3 and y'all still manage to screw it up?
Seeing some of your playmaking explained in text like that (especially positioning and how you use sleep aggressively, not just as denial) makes me so excited to play the game. I'm so inspired to carry games as zen or ana now
I love the homework part at the end of the video ( 24:00 ). It gives lower level players (or people that can't check the 20+ min video) the summary of the most important conclusions. I also agree with the need for playmaking of the supports. The problem is the comunity. Until they adapt to this idea, is likely to be treated as a trower if you arent ducktaped to you main tank while they eat damage (even in high diamont)
Calls 'suppot carry' but actually only shows and discuss ana gameplay... Just name it "ana support carry playstyle". True, ana has the highest carry potential on support with antinade though.
It's just that you'll notice it most between a bad afk and a good aggressive ana. Moiras already are dps addicts. Baps and Brigs have A tier carry potential anyways, arguably above ana. And a good zen or lucio will destroy stuff in the right map and team (with added benefit of def ult). But getting a loosing/throwing team to soft-int and teamwipe the others, just by that nade is priceless in some situations.
Hooooly. That clip where you are juggling the entire team underground and your team is just chilling. That hurt me to watch. People need to stop being so afraid of engaging. The game will not win itself!!!
Great video and very informative! One suggestion; I really like the text in the bottom left, but it can be hard to read with certain map elements (the buildings on Rialto are quite bright, for example). I think the text would be a lot easier to read if you add just a touch of black tint behind the text, like a solid translucent black rectangle, or a slight dark blur around the text. You could still see any necessary gameplay, but wouldn't need to spend extra time to focus on reading the text. Watching the game, listening to you, and reading the text is already a bit much, and I think this would it so that you don't have to spend too much time reading the text.
Use high ground, off angles that's difficult to get to you but easy for you to hit the enemy team. Unless you're playing rein you can't just stand in front of the enemy team and have a shoot out until ults can make a play.
To start just learn this easy tricks. 1.- you want to be next to a natural cover 70% of the time (that 30% youll be making a play like freedo just taught you in this video) 2.- remember tip 1? Yes you want a natural BUT make sure to chose one where you can constantly get value, (example if you are a support you want a natural cover where you have line of sight of your team, if you are a tank you want one where you can push or reatreat, or one where you can easily dive the enemy back line (pro tip dont dive the front line... I know it sounds obvious but I have seen it happen) 3.- OVERTIME if your tank is taking the point he needs you to do 1 of 2 things, taking more enemy aggro or peel for him pocket him super hard, dps no one is looking at you in OVERTIME unless you are bastion so go after their supports or get ready for a ult combo, other support.... Pray.
I played this season mostly passiv as support and i couldn’t really climb. Hopefully your strategy works out for me. I also got kinda frustrated when before every fight even starts someone dies. Never even thought about commuting to a 5v6/4v6 when we have the positional advantage. Thank you great video!
I agree map knowledge is super important. Knowing where we should fight and the path to get there based on enemy positions is step one, then trying to convince people NOT to auto pilot down main every time is a whole other battle. Really interesting video.
I really agree with this one. Main tanks are in a bad way currently. And this guy acts like that isn’t true. You’re going to get punished hard for playing rein , orisa, or even monkey if your team isn’t playing 100% around you.
OMG! FRITO! YES! I've felt this way about tanks for years!!! Thank you for putting into words what happens when I as a tank make space, and my solo que team doesn't take it... And also I've recently started doing what you do as a healer, take a flank path and beg my team to follow me instead of bash heads against the enemy team. So much validation, thank you my friend~
If you're tired of just lose trying play for your team, or playing with the meta, I have a tip for you. Play the game with your favorites heroes, this game have no more team work. Just be one trick hero. You will probably still losing, but having fun XD

I mean yes and no if they over buff her though we will just see the worst version of double shield again. Also i think they need to change her kit to actually make her fun to play its so boring and unrewarding playing orisa and sigma.

@@cthulhurage5598 Double shield was so good because there was so much damage that only orissa and sigma could survive it. Rather then just nerfing damage they nerfed orissa and sigma as well while buffing hog which just formed this crappy tank meta. They need to buff the tanks excluding ball and winston and keep hog the same. Blizzard are to afraid to buff however and will never do this.
@richard mizenko i agree with you on most of what you said except for winston i honestly think winston and rein could get a small buff and it wouldnt break the meta. No on ever complains rein and winston are busted because they arent. Rein could have his 2000 hp shield back and at thos point it would really only be a quality of life change and moneky im not sure but a small buff wouldnt kill him
Pretty much the only few days a season I play overwatch are immediately after these vids. I watch, think 'I have a fundamentally improved understanding of this game, time to go carry' and quickly get slapped back into place. I used to think I couldn't get out of bronze/silver cause I had bad luck, but it's time to accept that I am most likely the potato
@@SpaceCowBoyRay I would disagree. The Winston gameplay clearly showed survivability and long drawn out tickle fights that lead to kills but far too slowly so the enemy could easily stall out point. Highlighting that if Ana/Zen participated in the fight it would have gone much quicker with no stall opportunity. Orisa was literally face tanking 1v5 and 1v6 while everyone used map cover. I'm a plat tank who hasn't even sniffed masters and wouldn't play her like that.
@@JeromePhiffer I know the orisa was bad and was out of position. My peak rank on pc was 3900 and my best tank is winston,rein,orisa. I agree if the supports were in the fight it would've went alot more smoother, but his angles with winston and his primal rages were not good in the slightest. In the situation where you have people in a small room he could've killed both enemy players yet he let them get out the room. He wasted both primals in two good situations so he has no right to bash the other players.
Also, “healers are dps players that can heal” Me, playing Mercy: 👁👄👁 I feel like this applies to a majority of the roster but when I keep thinking about Mercy I still feel left out. Like its just ana brig lucio that are the strongest of the strong, and then everyone else is meh.
Right!? He keeps saying "Supports are the strongest, you need to go frag" But that always comes with a little asterisk that says *Unless you're playing Mercy. To which the universal answer is, "Then stop playing Mercy." Fuck those people. This isn't the game I signed up for anymore.
@@josephreynolds2401 of course and thats where her strength lies: never dying and always healing. But like this video says, youre basically afking, and theres not too much play making going on, except for when you whip out a pistol to catch that tricky widow. She’s great in her own way, especially for solo queuers I feel, but she’s in no way a playmaker other than when she resses. Callouts can help with that too though.
Because Mercy isnt a DPS like the rest of the category at this point(except dead Brig). Ana has 3 hit kills & the dart handing her free kills. Zen's base damage & range has always been op, and he has Discord on top of that. Bap might as well have an Assault Rifle now. Moira will never get her 80 heals back. Meanwhile, her damage never got nerfed. And Lucio's primary may be average, but that L2 spam gets him instant kills on maps that favor him. They all have better dmg capabilities over heals, especially mow that barriers are dying. But Mercy's the only one that still has heal focus be her main thing. She hasnt had any damage change like dual pistols or that staff firing a damaging beam. Her damage sucks, except for assists. So yeah, there's no excuse to be shooting more than healing with Mercy, because she isnt a DPS.......yet.
@@Walt_Xander94 ok hear me out but I think that using your pistol during her ult is actually one of the most effective ways to use it. Flying into the back and killing a widow or an as he and the returning to your team with heals and damage boost gives you such a major advantage, and sometimes you can unironically get 3 or more elims by valking and going full battle mercy
@@thebabycow Sure, Mercy during Valkyrie has infinite ammo for some reason, but if you want to kill a Widow, Moira does that all the time, and she's allowed to dmg more thanks to her heal nerfs. But Mercy's design still has healing has her priority. She wont get to focus on dmg until she gets a dmg rework that takes away her heals & completely kill her pocketing.
@@thebabycow Using mercys pistol is wasting the potential for damage boost, legit dude It doesnt matter if you get three picks, because chances are your team is dead without the 60hps, and not even mentioning if you would of just stayed with them and damage boost they would get their ultimate quicker. If you're playing mercy with the pistol you are throwing, just play a character like zen, ana, or moira so you can do good damage without throwing lmaooo
As a tank player, the game really hasn't been that fun. I really enjoy carrying a team even if my team isn't playing that well. Right now it feels like I have to roll the dice every time I queue to see whether or not I get good supports. I would love to play with friends, but there isn't anyone in my group that cares about the game enough to actually be competitive.
dps players: We wont be happy until no one can kill us! support players: We won't be happy until no one can kill us! tank players: we just kinda wanna be able to play the game...
@@DemonbreedGaming no I don't want to be unkillable, I just want to make there be counterplay and require skill to kill me. I would never ask for a hitscan DPS to even be nerfed that much, let alone removed. I probably wouldn't want projectile characters nerfed at all. It's just that Doomfist specifically is the worst thing in the game and should never have been added.

I'm so glad I found this video. I thought i was being frustrated for no reason but this guide points out my struggles with randoms: their lack of positioning. The game is at a beautiful point right now in which game sense is more important that mechanical skill and it's showing

Honestly needed to hear this. It’s something you know in the back of your mind but double shield to this stuff is night and day in terms of play style for support. Mindset change talked about in the video gave me 100 sr tonight. Please more “state of the game” type videos
Videos like these are great - I just play quick play and i embrace the chaos of random teammates not working together... but I want to get better at finding opportunities to support better or affect the game more.
I'm glad someone is finally talking about how much healers can carry. Most of the time the team just forgets about the healers. Or they'll blame them for their own bad positioning Healers are incredibly strong and can completely change the direction of a game. I used to be a DPS main and switched to being a healer main after role queue was released (I don't have time after work to queue for DPS all the time) and it's honestly some of the most fun games I've had along with a lot of the best games I've had. Clutching things at the last minute etc
One reason why people are scared to be more aggressive with supports could be simply fear. It's always been a sort of conventional wisdom that if the supports die the fight is over. So alot of support players, at least on my rank, feel like they shouldn't take any risks, play it safe and all that. Yeah sure, you could go aggro with Zen and get a kill but you could also get killed yourself and then the voice chat goes like "Oh my god, Zen, you're so bad, stop dying!".
Im so happy to see some sort of answer to the question of; Is it better to do the right thing on your own or the wrong thing as a team? I've always felt like the answer was the former and I'm glad to see some clarity as to why that is. But I do want to ask how this applies in lower ranks?? Ive had the situation a million times where I'll get a fat anit-nade as Ana but since we're in gold the follow up is non existent and now I don't have that boosted healing to stop my front line from just being mowed down
Overwatch in 2020: it doesn't matter what role you pick, if you want to carry/make big plays then the _only_ way to do that is frag out like a dps. It's disappointing what this game has turned into. I miss 2016/2017 Overwatch, where being really good at protecting teammates and shutting down the enemy's attempts to wipe your team were legit ways to make plays and carry.
I like when he actually makes the videos specific to ranked play and also the creativity in this was was superb. I agree that most people on ladder don't think about supports this way. Thats why when I pick zen in masters they instantly call me a throw pick even then I 5 click frag pretty much every time I let it go and control spacing with discord. I hate when say we have a great grav or I counter bad ult economy usage when zens trance then I try to say push and people don't follow it up or they spam in chat group up come back Yada yadda. Or you have 2 people on a flank position isolating themselves while yoy are having a team fight mainly around important space and you grav and even with discord sometimes we don't frag out because there is like 2 people there me and Zara and the enemy team uses a support ult or tank abilities to counter.
One thing that's helped me is finding a few people to play with regularly. You get to know how each other play and communicate with each other. Doing this I've easily reached my season high and even my career high on a role. If you want to get better easily, try finding a few people to regularly play with.
i cant seem to not view moira as a "spray the tanks, goats brawl style"... should i be trying to make more plays as moira? or is moira's focus still on healing, as it was in goats?
Study Alarm's Moira from S3, he + Funny astro were the best lucio moira rush backline and I think show the right balance of offense/defense. The answer changes depending on the situation, but think of it like this, a teammate with 1% HP deals the same damage, has all the same abilities as a teammate with 100% HP. Juggling your teammates health for opportunities to sneak in damage is the key to swinging fights, pure healing for sure isn't it.
@@YourOverwatch makes sense, thanks. i'll try to play her more and get a feel of the balance. i hesitate to get too bloodthirsty if i think my teammates will feel abandoned. as a side note, the more Team DM i play, the more i feel like that's a good mentality for how to play out fights in QP/Comp. by that i mean, stay grouped and coordinated and focus on winning the fight. in Team DM i think im more likely to deal out damage as moira than i would feel i should in QP/Comp. do you have any thoughts about play style or habits in Team DM, in general, and how they compare or translate to QP/Comp?
I've been having a time in comp falling hard from ~2500 to almost silver in Tank role because not only are supports positioning incredibly far back, but I've seen _tanks_ positioning really far back, and seem to be scared pushing in. The issues you state are definitely applicable to the Tank role as well, at least in lower ranks, and I'm not sure what more anyone can do to change their minds. I've been playing Hog/Zarya in order to get picks/enable plays, but even when I kill 3, the team is so far back that they can never capitalize on it. I've lost so many games from passive play recently that even playing an off tank feels absolutely horrible.
Honest question, does all of this change when it's controller instead of keyboard and mouse? The reaction time and accuracy difference is rather large as a standard between those two types of handling which tends to alter the capabilities of the player when handling their character. So holding positions is very important as far as tactics but if you were to play that same way but lacked the ability to react and control so precisely, would it change the overall success rate of said strategy? Just wondering

I honestly don't know if it's your aim. Many characters are so god damn thin that it's very difficult to hit them. Combine that with jumping being a thing the game encourages and lots of things doing low damage, and it's hard to get kills. Often I can get more kills by doing intelligently controlled random patterns, which is terrible. In other FPS games where bullets do damage and character models are normal, I could shoot someone in the head across the map.

I go about 2 seasons before getting back to diamond, when I'm there I get so exhausted from how muh I've played I usually take a break and drop back down, keep going as long as your win percentage is higher than 50 you'll climb all be it at a slow pace but it still happens nonetheless

Getting out of elo hell is so much better if you duo queue, just stay as a team as soon as you find a good player in your lobby. Oh and whenever you notice you have a 50+% win rate you just have to keep playing a lot. The mistake I made in elo hell was thinking I was hard stuck but I actually had a 55% win rate and just didn't play enough games. I went silver to plat within 2 weeks when I started doing these things so anyone can do it. Good luck tho!

yeah, I used to play more bap, moira maybe mercy. But now it's Zen, Brig Ana all the way. I'm even out-healing on brig and zen a lot of the time, just by being in the fight when it happens, getting ult super fast by making plays. It's crazy.
I imagine when people say "healers are the weakest role", they really mean its the most frustrating role when you get on a team of randoms that refuse to coordinate anything as a team. Ruins the whole game.

Mercy does also go in this category. You get the most value on mercy by NOT healing tanks. You get value by dmg boosting heroes to max value and letting the other healer heal the most

Playing tank is such a horrible experience right now. With all of the nerfs across the board and the DPS and support buffs, it just feels like all the carry potential has been taken out of your hands. You have to play perfectly to get a single elimination. As a tank, but especially main tank, you just het bullied by over half the characters in the game and sometimes you simply can't do anything about it. Tank is the most easily and widely countered role in the game. Sombra and Mei hard counter every tank in the game and make it impossible for you to do your job simply by existing. Beyond that, with shields being at an all-time low, the current superpowered DPS dish out some huge damage to tanks, who are the biggest, fattest targets on the screen.
It just feels like you're so dependent on your teammates to win. I'll have games where I do enormous amounts of work, create lots of space but my supports will just hide in the back of the map while other games I get utterly hard carried. People still think that tanks are by far the strongest role in the game. Tanks have to do everything. Tanks have to make space, counter the Widow, protect the team, set up the team, get eliminations, and if even the slightest thing goes wrong it's always a 'tank diff'. I enjoy playing Ball, I've mained him for a while now and I recently hit masters but I dropped back to diamond. I will get flamed to kingdom come before the game has even started for playing Ball and I find that in lower ranks there are so many people who just command you to play Rein Zarya no matter if the map is good for it. It's always Rein Zarya, on every map, every time. And when you do swap and go aggro, they whine because you didn't play rectangle man and hold up the shield. DPS and supports hardly seem to think independently as they expect you to constantly hold the shield up instead of trying to set up flanks or angles.
Honestly, the most frustrating part is that tanks are the scapegoat every single time. It's always a 'tank diff', no matter what. And it's not just the rare "you're trash". No, I get told to end my life once every 5 games with the others having a 50/50 chance of being blamed or flamed.

Welcome to overwatch. Where most dps have a no skill one button team wipe, heroes with low skill and high reward plague the game and characters that take skill get nerfed.
the amount of times i started maining someone in meta and blizzard just nerfs them in 2 weeks, its so bad. now im stuck playing lucio because he hasnt got nerfed since goats.
One note for your Ana, Freedo, I noticed that you’re using your nanos primarily for damage combos (e.g. NanoVisor,NanoBlade) while you could use it to enable a tank that’s in trouble (e.g. you’re roadhog and sigma on critical hp). I also noticed that you’re sleeps tend to go into targets that you just see you can hit, but you could be using it to stop flankers, deny the high noon inside the grav, etc.
I don’t want to be mean or sound condescending, just thought I mentioned somethings I noticed. :)

It's depressing that Overwatch seems to have forgotten that. If your idea of a good time is fragging out, that's fine but _que as a dps to do it._ Some of us actually LIKE defensive playstyles, and enjoy protecting our teammates more than dueling enemies.

Hey freedo, not sure if you can help but I’ll ask anyway. Nowadays on console (Xbox) it seems about 17/20 games are reliably smurf majority and about 4/15 games end with you being ddossed. This is a widespread issue that I’m sure many other players are experiencing. With that stuff being said, how do you recommend navigate this chaos? Yesterday my own team in ranked booted me offline multiple times, and I’ve checked and blizzard is flat out denying the issue. Any chance you know what’s going on? I’m trying really hard, but I think if they leave the game like this I won’t be able to bear even looking at the game anymore

Thank you for making map guides. When I first started playing a couple years back I looked for videos of that, I could tell that we should be fighting for some spots and giving some others up for preferable territory. However I couldn't find anything about positioning or any sort of map guides. I've learned a lot since then but I know I still don't choose the most optimal place for fights sometimes, would be fantastic to have it more spelled out to use

Tbh if you want to play dps support its better to learn a real dps support like Ana, lucio, zen, baptise, if you want to climb there is a point where every one can 1v1 a moira, there is a point in ranked where suddenly people can aim and beat moiras, but if you play lucio you got an awesome ult and can dive, baptise can destroy echos and pharas and save tanks whit inmortality, if you learn to hit head shots whit zen and learn where to stand you are basicaly gm.

My first DPS was Moira, I then switched to Zen and then got into a very reddit Lucio style and easily climbed 2 ranks cuz I could stall point forever and 1v1 everyone in that rank. He is still my most played. Now I am more of a Bap player and I do end up 1v1ing everyone in the game every chance I get. The only reason I don't play Ana is cuz I never heal with her at all, I treat her like widow but with better cooldowns.
I agree. Another video idea that I got from some text you laid out in Havana. You mentioned that the high ground on left mini is the strongest position for streets. Maybe hit up Karq and do a strongest position for every map video.

Got my friend to watch this video and then we queued up. The results were pretty much instant. The change in mentality from how I used to play support a few months ago (as I am now returning from a short break) is enough to break games open. Still a lot to improve though, and the good thing is after watching a video like this it is so much easier to spot your mistakes when you have a playstyle to follow. I definitely had an easier time on escort/hybrid maps. When you do the advanced guide please make sure you cover tips for each map type (I'm not sure if u do that anyway). Also this is day 1 before I have looked at any of my vods so lots of improvement on my end needed.

I find it very interesting that you posted this video now because, for the past 2 days I have been almost exclusively playing Ana in ranked and won basically every game (which really doesn't happen often in diamond). I've been using funky positions and throwing anties/dpsing and it works way more now that it used to.
I do a lot of this I find myself yelling "move up" the whole game.
Bro, I feel this in my soul. I've literally baited 3 enemies way off point to come get me before and kited/cheesed them for like 20-30 seconds before and my team STILL don't win the fight. Like how is it a 5v3 and y'all still manage to screw it up?

I love the homework part at the end of the video ( 24:00 ). It gives lower level players (or people that can't check the 20+ min video) the summary of the most important conclusions.
I also agree with the need for playmaking of the supports. The problem is the comunity. Until they adapt to this idea, is likely to be treated as a trower if you arent ducktaped to you main tank while they eat damage (even in high diamont)

It's just that you'll notice it most between a bad afk and a good aggressive ana. Moiras already are dps addicts. Baps and Brigs have A tier carry potential anyways, arguably above ana. And a good zen or lucio will destroy stuff in the right map and team (with added benefit of def ult).
But getting a loosing/throwing team to soft-int and teamwipe the others, just by that nade is priceless in some situations.

Great video and very informative! One suggestion; I really like the text in the bottom left, but it can be hard to read with certain map elements (the buildings on Rialto are quite bright, for example). I think the text would be a lot easier to read if you add just a touch of black tint behind the text, like a solid translucent black rectangle, or a slight dark blur around the text. You could still see any necessary gameplay, but wouldn't need to spend extra time to focus on reading the text. Watching the game, listening to you, and reading the text is already a bit much, and I think this would it so that you don't have to spend too much time reading the text.
Can we get a “how to maximize positioning” video? I always hear “have good positioning” but I’m not entirely sure how...
Use high ground, off angles that's difficult to get to you but easy for you to hit the enemy team. Unless you're playing rein you can't just stand in front of the enemy team and have a shoot out until ults can make a play.
It's character specific and comp specific too. One character's ideal positioning on a map may not be the ideal for another.
To start just learn this easy tricks.
1.- you want to be next to a natural cover 70% of the time (that 30% youll be making a play like freedo just taught you in this video)
2.- remember tip 1? Yes you want a natural BUT make sure to chose one where you can constantly get value, (example if you are a support you want a natural cover where you have line of sight of your team, if you are a tank you want one where you can push or reatreat, or one where you can easily dive the enemy back line (pro tip dont dive the front line... I know it sounds obvious but I have seen it happen)
3.- OVERTIME if your tank is taking the point he needs you to do 1 of 2 things, taking more enemy aggro or peel for him pocket him super hard, dps no one is looking at you in OVERTIME unless you are bastion so go after their supports or get ready for a ult combo, other support.... Pray.
I played this season mostly passiv as support and i couldn’t really climb. Hopefully your strategy works out for me.
I also got kinda frustrated when before every fight even starts someone dies. Never even thought about commuting to a 5v6/4v6 when we have the positional advantage.

@@cthulhurage5598 Double shield was so good because there was so much damage that only orissa and sigma could survive it. Rather then just nerfing damage they nerfed orissa and sigma as well while buffing hog which just formed this crappy tank meta. They need to buff the tanks excluding ball and winston and keep hog the same. Blizzard are to afraid to buff however and will never do this.

@richard mizenko i agree with you on most of what you said except for winston i honestly think winston and rein could get a small buff and it wouldnt break the meta. No on ever complains rein and winston are busted because they arent. Rein could have his 2000 hp shield back and at thos point it would really only be a quality of life change and moneky im not sure but a small buff wouldnt kill him

Pretty much the only few days a season I play overwatch are immediately after these vids. I watch, think 'I have a fundamentally improved understanding of this game, time to go carry' and quickly get slapped back into place. I used to think I couldn't get out of bronze/silver cause I had bad luck, but it's time to accept that I am most likely the potato

@@SpaceCowBoyRay I would disagree. The Winston gameplay clearly showed survivability and long drawn out tickle fights that lead to kills but far too slowly so the enemy could easily stall out point. Highlighting that if Ana/Zen participated in the fight it would have gone much quicker with no stall opportunity. Orisa was literally face tanking 1v5 and 1v6 while everyone used map cover. I'm a plat tank who hasn't even sniffed masters and wouldn't play her like that.
@@JeromePhiffer I know the orisa was bad and was out of position. My peak rank on pc was 3900 and my best tank is winston,rein,orisa. I agree if the supports were in the fight it would've went alot more smoother, but his angles with winston and his primal rages were not good in the slightest. In the situation where you have people in a small room he could've killed both enemy players yet he let them get out the room. He wasted both primals in two good situations so he has no right to bash the other players.
Great vid, would love to see guides on power positions on other maps that tanks should be looking to secure or protect.

I feel like this applies to a majority of the roster but when I keep thinking about Mercy I still feel left out.
Like its just ana brig lucio that are the strongest of the strong, and then everyone else is meh.
Mercy has mobility mechanics on par in difficulty with tracer and genji. Think about it that way.
Right!? He keeps saying "Supports are the strongest, you need to go frag" But that always comes with a little asterisk that says *Unless you're playing Mercy. To which the universal answer is, "Then stop playing Mercy." Fuck those people. This isn't the game I signed up for anymore.

@@josephreynolds2401 of course and thats where her strength lies: never dying and always healing. But like this video says, youre basically afking, and theres not too much play making going on, except for when you whip out a pistol to catch that tricky widow.
She’s great in her own way, especially for solo queuers I feel, but she’s in no way a playmaker other than when she resses. Callouts can help with that too though.

Because Mercy isnt a DPS like the rest of the category at this point(except dead Brig).
Ana has 3 hit kills & the dart handing her free kills.
Zen's base damage & range has always been op, and he has Discord on top of that.
Bap might as well have an Assault Rifle now.
Moira will never get her 80 heals back. Meanwhile, her damage never got nerfed.
And Lucio's primary may be average, but that L2 spam gets him instant kills on maps that favor him.
They all have better dmg capabilities over heals, especially mow that barriers are dying.
But Mercy's the only one that still has heal focus be her main thing. She hasnt had any damage change like dual pistols or that staff firing a damaging beam. Her damage sucks, except for assists. So yeah, there's no excuse to be shooting more than healing with Mercy, because she isnt a DPS.......yet.
@@Walt_Xander94 ok hear me out but I think that using your pistol during her ult is actually one of the most effective ways to use it. Flying into the back and killing a widow or an as he and the returning to your team with heals and damage boost gives you such a major advantage, and sometimes you can unironically get 3 or more elims by valking and going full battle mercy
@@thebabycow Sure, Mercy during Valkyrie has infinite ammo for some reason, but if you want to kill a Widow, Moira does that all the time, and she's allowed to dmg more thanks to her heal nerfs.
But Mercy's design still has healing has her priority. She wont get to focus on dmg until she gets a dmg rework that takes away her heals & completely kill her pocketing.

It doesnt matter if you get three picks, because chances are your team is dead without the 60hps, and not even mentioning if you would of just stayed with them and damage boost they would get their ultimate quicker.
If you're playing mercy with the pistol you are throwing, just play a character like zen, ana, or moira so you can do good damage without throwing lmaooo
As a tank player, the game really hasn't been that fun. I really enjoy carrying a team even if my team isn't playing that well. Right now it feels like I have to roll the dice every time I queue to see whether or not I get good supports. I would love to play with friends, but there isn't anyone in my group that cares about the game enough to actually be competitive.
Now all we need is for Doomfist to be removed, and playing support will be fun again!

@@DemonbreedGaming no I don't want to be unkillable, I just want to make there be counterplay and require skill to kill me. I would never ask for a hitscan DPS to even be nerfed that much, let alone removed. I probably wouldn't want projectile characters nerfed at all. It's just that Doomfist specifically is the worst thing in the game and should never have been added.

I'm so glad I found this video. I thought i was being frustrated for no reason but this guide points out my struggles with randoms: their lack of positioning. The game is at a beautiful point right now in which game sense is more important that mechanical skill and it's showing
Let them feed and pop off from strong positioning and you'll win despite them.
I swear your guides has helped me climb outa the bottom of bronze and into mid to high silver,( think I can hit gold if I had the time to grind). Also your guides have opened my eyes to how fun support can be ( main tank kinda guy). Please keep up these kinda vids.
Honestly needed to hear this. It’s something you know in the back of your mind but double shield to this stuff is night and day in terms of play style for support. Mindset change talked about in the video gave me 100 sr tonight. Please more “state of the game” type videos
Videos like these are great - I just play quick play and i embrace the chaos of random teammates not working together... but I want to get better at finding opportunities to support better or affect the game more.
I'm glad someone is finally talking about how much healers can carry. Most of the time the team just forgets about the healers. Or they'll blame them for their own bad positioning
Healers are incredibly strong and can completely change the direction of a game. I used to be a DPS main and switched to being a healer main after role queue was released (I don't have time after work to queue for DPS all the time) and it's honestly some of the most fun games I've had along with a lot of the best games I've had. Clutching things at the last minute etc
One reason why people are scared to be more aggressive with supports could be simply fear. It's always been a sort of conventional wisdom that if the supports die the fight is over. So alot of support players, at least on my rank, feel like they shouldn't take any risks, play it safe and all that. Yeah sure, you could go aggro with Zen and get a kill but you could also get killed yourself and then the voice chat goes like "Oh my god, Zen, you're so bad, stop dying!".
If watching professional overwatch has taught me anything, it's that supports don't frontline. If anyone says otherwise, they... might be wrong :)

Im so happy to see some sort of answer to the question of; Is it better to do the right thing on your own or the wrong thing as a team? I've always felt like the answer was the former and I'm glad to see some clarity as to why that is. But I do want to ask how this applies in lower ranks?? Ive had the situation a million times where I'll get a fat anit-nade as Ana but since we're in gold the follow up is non existent and now I don't have that boosted healing to stop my front line from just being mowed down

Overwatch in 2020: it doesn't matter what role you pick, if you want to carry/make big plays then the _only_ way to do that is frag out like a dps.
It's disappointing what this game has turned into.
I miss 2016/2017 Overwatch, where being really good at protecting teammates and shutting down the enemy's attempts to wipe your team were legit ways to make plays and carry.
I like when he actually makes the videos specific to ranked play and also the creativity in this was was superb. I agree that most people on ladder don't think about supports this way. Thats why when I pick zen in masters they instantly call me a throw pick even then I 5 click frag pretty much every time I let it go and control spacing with discord. I hate when say we have a great grav or I counter bad ult economy usage when zens trance then I try to say push and people don't follow it up or they spam in chat group up come back Yada yadda. Or you have 2 people on a flank position isolating themselves while yoy are having a team fight mainly around important space and you grav and even with discord sometimes we don't frag out because there is like 2 people there me and Zara and the enemy team uses a support ult or tank abilities to counter.
One thing that's helped me is finding a few people to play with regularly. You get to know how each other play and communicate with each other. Doing this I've easily reached my season high and even my career high on a role. If you want to get better easily, try finding a few people to regularly play with.
i cant seem to not view moira as a "spray the tanks, goats brawl style"... should i be trying to make more plays as moira? or is moira's focus still on healing, as it was in goats?
Study Alarm's Moira from S3, he + Funny astro were the best lucio moira rush backline and I think show the right balance of offense/defense. The answer changes depending on the situation, but think of it like this, a teammate with 1% HP deals the same damage, has all the same abilities as a teammate with 100% HP. Juggling your teammates health for opportunities to sneak in damage is the key to swinging fights, pure healing for sure isn't it.

as a side note, the more Team DM i play, the more i feel like that's a good mentality for how to play out fights in QP/Comp. by that i mean, stay grouped and coordinated and focus on winning the fight. in Team DM i think im more likely to deal out damage as moira than i would feel i should in QP/Comp.
do you have any thoughts about play style or habits in Team DM, in general, and how they compare or translate to QP/Comp?
I've been having a time in comp falling hard from ~2500 to almost silver in Tank role because not only are supports positioning incredibly far back, but I've seen _tanks_ positioning really far back, and seem to be scared pushing in. The issues you state are definitely applicable to the Tank role as well, at least in lower ranks, and I'm not sure what more anyone can do to change their minds.
I've been playing Hog/Zarya in order to get picks/enable plays, but even when I kill 3, the team is so far back that they can never capitalize on it. I've lost so many games from passive play recently that even playing an off tank feels absolutely horrible.
Honest question, does all of this change when it's controller instead of keyboard and mouse? The reaction time and accuracy difference is rather large as a standard between those two types of handling which tends to alter the capabilities of the player when handling their character. So holding positions is very important as far as tactics but if you were to play that same way but lacked the ability to react and control so precisely, would it change the overall success rate of said strategy? Just wondering
