The manipulative mind of the British at play here ,they turned the Litungas into lapdog puppets while on the other hand they were looting mineral resources at an industrial scale..Very interesting piece of history !

Regarding 31.01 Butler responding bluntly that Britain could not afford to support Barotse Land financially... Am compelled to ask, wasn't there a way at that time that Barotse Land could be financially independent?

How were the Litungas turned into puppets when they were insistent on their kingdom's independence? May be the word "puppet" means something else in Zambia.

@@Sabelo533they wanted independence later when they had already sold their rights and land to the British. Lewanika wrote to the British to be protected to which Barostse land was accorded the "protectorate" state. However as the British consolidated their power they reduced his power more and more to which he felt they needed to he independent. So yeah, they were puppets.

This "Special Relationship" that the Barotse authority was so desperate to maintain with the British was more or less case of Stockholm syndrome. The very reason why Bantu tribes were easily conquered was in part due to our fragmented resistance to imperialism. It's reminiscent of Malcom X's analogy of the house and field slave, both are slaves except one felt better than the other because massa let them sleep in the house.

You have hit the nail on the head. The Barotses were use to legitimize British rule and they enjoyed the trappings of that relationship. After independence all that was lost and some of them could not integrate in the new system but held on to that lost past. That is the issue. Fortunately many of them moved on and held important positions in govt. In fact they played an important role in the new Zambia because most of them were highly educated.

Your research into this topic is so profound!!! Job well done.
Now, it is very evident that the educated elite of Barotseland could've been vested with knowledge on/in contracts, but there was a lot of dishonesty and selfishness therein. Yes, the other tribes and establishments (such as the Lamba) did not have their education, but they had their sense of belonging, pride, dignity and brotherhood. They didn't go down without a fight for their inheritance. They didn't sell mineral rights to start earning annual mineral royalties. They didn't subjugate other tribes.
And to be honest, as much as this was documented and signed with concrete arguments of abrogation, its foundation was flawed!!! Now that many other people are educated, they're able to tell that the agreement was based on falsehoods to begin with. Nobody wants to go with that in this day and age.
It is time to be honest with one another, open up our lands for development the way the Lambas have, for example, for the benefit of the entire nation called Zambia. We were all duped and forced into arrangements we didn't want from the get go. Let's not continue fighting brother against brother. You have an opportunity to stand with your brother now and be great! You tried to stand with the British and they washed their hands of you.

Great documentary. This was a decision between keeping a Monarch that was propped up and protect by the British to rule over territories they do not own, but still wanted to maintain its special status and privileges and a Republic that would unite all the territories. I don't think Kaunda made a mistake. But I do think some authority and a portion of out tax revenues need to be given back to the traditional authorities, and I mean all of them not just the Borotse National Council. We are a nation of equals, there should be no special status on anyone , especially special control over other traditional authorities. We are One Zambia, One Nation, One people.

Are those who seek to restore the Barotseland agreement ready to face the fact the its original boundaries extend outside Zambia, and that it’s not just western province but southern and northwestern too...and what about other tribes other than Silozi like Tonga, Kaonde, ILA etc, do you think they will agree to be under the Litunga too....yes I agree that Kaunda made a mistake, but to use the same logic 55years later after the Nation is more intertwined than ever is illogical.....Zambia doesn’t need disunity that is brought about by a grudge from the past but rather look forward on how we can be more united as a nation

Mmm this issue is more than i though, i have now understand what the Loziz want, perhaps they just want the agreement to be restored and that everything that was agreed should be followed. Perhaps i am quite certain that one day the agreement will be restored.
In addition i also noticed that the British didn't want to continue giving the Litunga money so they decided to dich the Litunga in the hands of the Zambian government.
Perhaps the British were the ones who made the Litunga get used to receiving money, arguably the British were looking for ways of dumping the Litunga hence the Barosterland agreement come as an aid to them.
From what i have learned from this video, it was clear that the Loziz wanted to continue to be under the British protection based on the treats they had from which the Litunga use to make some pretty good money. Hence the British could not keep up with them....
This video has really expanded my understanding on this matter.
Additionally, i have noticed that the Litunga was forced to claim territories that did not belong to him in order for the British have free access to the minerals.
Thanks for making this information available. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Mwanawina III was not knighted for being a dummy!
Contrary to your sarcasm, Mwanawina III was honoured during the famous New Year Honours of 1959, at which the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, honoured and knighted many people in the Commonwealth realms, on merit.
He was actually given two Honours on the same day; the SIR medal for the Services he rendered to the British as a Sergeant during the First World War, commandeering 2000 Barotse porters up to Serenje (today's Northern Zambia); and the second Medal of Knight Commander - of the Order - of the British Empire, KBE, for the services he rendered when he was the Senior Chief of Mankoya District of Barotseland (before he was a Litunga), by assigning his subjects to provide rubber from Mambongo tree species, a special rubber substance, needed for weaponry hardware during World War II to the British.

If your primary focus was on the sarcasm, then you've missed the point.
I don't blame the chiefs cause I believe they may have thought about was best for themselves and their people but in that quest got exploited crazily and whether honoured or not, the truth is that they Stole. the evidence is all around.

It was existent. It's just that the colonialists didn't want to recognise anyone else as king because they only saw their ruler as king. This kind of thinking is what makes other groupings and Zambians in general not warm up to that Barotseland Agreement. It somehow undermines other people people. Other people recognise their rulers as kings and queens despite the British refusal to do so. But the Litunga is king because the British recognise him so at some point? Come on.

In North Eastern Rhodesia they killed Insingo who refused to be a subject of the British Empire and subdued thr Mwata in Luapula. So the Litunga in Northwestern Rhodesia sold his people to be subjects of the British where he was receiving money for himself and those close to himself. Barotseland should have been well developed by the time Zambia came into being. That why the British govt did not want to be burdened with perpetually supporting the Litunga who was not utilising the money for the development of his people but just the close family.

I feel like the decision to not uphold the agreement was in line with KKs one Zambia one nation motto and moreover the barotseland map that was being referred to was exaggerated as it comprised of territories that weren’t barotseland which were claimed in the litungas name essentially selling rights to land he didn’t own and getting 4000 pounds from it. It’s curious how years later the narrative has disregarded that part

I don't know what has happened to my comment but part one and part two of this documentary say it all. Kaunda is innocent in this issue . The funding of the British to Barotse, the BSCA Agency and the Litunga are the main causes of this . In part one you said the BSAC agency wanted the minerals in the lamba land ( copperbelt) to be mined by them only. They wanted litunga to claim the land territory of which they did by some how convincing him to sign the papers.
The lozi people hate the wrong person . Bsca are the main mastermind of all this. By the way, do a video about katanga province. Why its not part of Zambia.
The current president is a tribal cousin to Litunga. This should be resolved under his reign.

Since the Barotse land agreement was abolished by Parliament then it has to be resuscitated by Parliament as well. I understand the logic used by President Sata and his administration. It is very difficult to bring back the agreement to life because it would mean that even all the other chiefdoms would want the same. Chitimukulu was a very popular name in north easten Rhosesia and trust me if the Barotseland agreement goes through even people like Chitimukulu would want something similar.
Let's just leave Zambia the way it is. Lozi's need to understand that they were first ditched by the British and Kaunda used political intelligence to comfort them. After independence, Kaunda realised that it was going to be very difficult to honour the provisions of the Barotseland agreement. He intelligently took the issue to Parliament and since he had majority seats; the agreement got abolished.
It's going to be an issue of treason if the lozis go ahead with separating themselves from Zambia. And they even know it. That's why the only solution here is to persuade the sitting president to initiate the issue via legislative processes.
Very educative piece. Keep it up, as we keep learning😊

I enjoyed reading your comment. The agreement stated that any issues that need to settled regarding the details of the agreement must be done in the high court .
I too believe that this matter must be taken to the high court or is it the supreme court or LUNGU’s constitutional court ( so confusing)
with both parties agreeing to cancel the agreement amicably.
I also think that since their coffers were looted , some compensation should be made but then to whom? Even considering compensation could open a can of worms coz do we compensate individuals thrifty NRC or the royal establishment?
      ITS A MESS .

It doesn’t expire .The only way it can be changed is if and when the two parties agree and as it states , this change can only be done through the high court .
This agreement is very much alive and the KK government were the ones that breached it . This was why KK tried to restart talks in 1990
      Just before leaving office.
From what I hear , any Zambian law student is made aware of this because it runs parallel with the Zambian constitution by this I mean it was drafted at the same time
Zambia and her constitution were being born .

In part 1 of your documentary you narrated clearly how the barotseland was expanded into the lambaland and farther largely due to the BSAC influence and power. You mentioned how the litunga was influenced to declare non barotselands as his then BSAC would go on to snatch it.Clearly we could see through your own video that the lewanika used the influence and power of the British government to snatch lands of the fellow African chiefs at that time due to BSAC discovery of copper and other minerals in lands outside traditional barotseland.
Therefore it's very unfair and unsensible for you to say that kaunda made a mistake not to recognize the litunga as an equal for he was not equal to him. KK as a president of the new independent republic was a protector of the whole country Zambia and therefore he could not just farther the interests of one region whilst sidelining others.
The litunga clearly was forced to agree to be integrated into the new republic because Britain could no longer continue protecting it. He earlier opposed the nationalist political parties because he feared they were a threat to his kingship as you narrated. In conclusion, the barotseland was and still is a kingdom just like the Luba lunda and other kingdoms. We should thank the selfless leadership of KK and his comrades for unifying and defending the unitary state of the Republic of Zambia.

It is clear that the Kaunda regime went back on the agreement. That can not be disputed. Also very cleary the Barotse Establioshment was an enabler of colonization and never resisted British control. You put a liberator like KK and a man more interested in his power and influence together, what do you expect? We are integrated with the Western Province and the people from that province have never been persecuted. This is the lie that they are spreading around. Under Kaunda we had a lot of Western Province Prime Ministers, Ministers, Judges, Police, Lawyers etc. Where is the persecution? Zambia also had tro fight for liberation of our neighbours and these were more important. We Zambians lost wealth due to liberation struggle. So the Barotse are not the only ones that lost something. How can you be married to someone and expect not to share with issues? That is the price of being married!! Legally if a citizen revolts against his country, it is treason! In my opinion there are some opportunistic people sending out this venonm of cessation. People worked hard to unite the country and free us. Some lost their lives. Many Zambians are from both NE and NW Rhodesia including myself. I still think there is a way to end this thing amiacably without any drama. Zambia is one country.
