The Sacrifice Zone: Zambia's most polluted town | People & Power Documentary

  • Around the world, tens of millions of people live in so-called "sacrifice zones", areas which have become permanently impaired by environmental degradation, mostly due to pollution from heavy industry. One of the worst such sacrifice zones is in Kabwe, Zambia.
Here, 220,000 residents live close to an old lead and zinc mine which operated for almost a century. Although the mine closed in 1994, many residents say their children are now suffering from the effects of lead poisoning, and are seeking compensation.

Kabwe is not a city..Still a town and is not the second largest city in Zambia. There are currently four cities in Zambia and Kabwe is not one of them. While the information is helpful getting facts right would have been better, then try to paint the usual African picture..of extreme poverty and a society that can’t think on there own...

Your attack should have been directed at those accused of the pollution, not those bringing the issue to worldwide attention. Such emotional outbursts portray us as lacking in self-assurance, who always want to revel in victimhood. That Kabwe has been described as a city is barely relevant to the subject matter of the film.

@@Bio54633 KNC is right. Don't attack him. We appreciate the media coverage and trying to bring the issue to worldwide attention. But most of these world renowned media networks, especially western media, doesn't portray Africa in the best light. Look at the poor images of Kabwe they're showing. Look at how primitive the people they're portraying look. Is that really a true representation of Kabwe? And to say that is Zambia's second largest city is just so disheartening especially to a viewer not from Zambia. We appreciate the coverage and we're thankful. But don't portray us as primitive.

@@vinyl6131it is still part of kabwe because the reporter chose to focus on this and not where the rich reside. If theres a population that is suffering of course it doesn't mean the whole kabwe town. But thanks to the reporter for showing us the other side. 😢 Now it is time to act and not to attack our advocate!

I grew up in Kabwe, Katondo to be specific. Which is one of the areas largely contaminated with 'lead'. I'm 22 now and studying MBA in Morocco in third year, it breaks my heart to see how difficult the situation is: especially coming from a family that struggles to have 3 meals in a day. I can promise, that when psychological needs are missing such as food, you barely get to worry about other problems such as lead poisoning. And talking about sensitization of the community about the problem at hand, I don't think much is done at least when I was there, I only remember one NGO, coming to our community school to tell us about how we can prevent ourselves from it. That was the only time, (once in 20 years). We have so many problems, not knowing when we will have a much better environment. One thing is for sure, there is a partial change coming in day by day, in a positive direction.

The Zambian government to take action?? 😂 Anglo left the mine in the 70's and the Zambian government nationalised the mine- they took it over and played a complicit part in this. The government firstly did NOT protect their own citizens AND contributed to the harm done- and then when help was offered the corrupt Zambian government simply pocketed that money. I can understand why that lawsuit was dropped. The whole situation is terribly sad and my heart breaks for those families 💔

It's funny how we are missing the real point of the documentary. Forget about the city status of Kabwe and focus on the lead poisoning-that is the significance of the documentary and we as citizens should applaud the efforts being put in ensuring lives especially of the young ones are preserved by having those responsible pay the Compensation to enable the affected get proper medical help. And by the way those of you arguing the size of Kabwe do research and compare the town to others in terms of the radius each town you are proposing has in comparison to Kabwe. That being said Lead poisoning is killing the future of Kabwe therefore all efforts to bring them to book must be supported. Thank you

Many years later I came across this during my work with a faith based organization. The reports were heart breaking 2014-2016; 10 years later not much has been done. Suggestions were made to totally resettle everyone in that area.
Again I am not sure if our people would agree to resettle in rural Kabwe because they are so used to town.

Kabwe needs 'reconstruction surgery' environmentally. Zambia 🇿🇲 needs environment al policy implementation schemes similar to New Zealand and Norway. Mining companies in the need to take responsibility for air and environmental pollution in our nation. 🙏🏿🇿🇲💯💯

Zambians we need a mindset change busy arguing about trivial things the question is why is it that no zambian lawyers are interested in this matter and only foreigners are fighting for our own people? Why doesn't the government show interest and do something about the residents who live near this dangerous area? Look at those kids what kind of life are they going to have with such handicap?
