As an African, we know that we lack funds and job opportunities in Africa. We don’t expect Western countries to help us. They only have benefits and resources in their eyes. At least I have seen Chinese companies provide a lot of job opportunities. They are not perfect. We are not perfect either.

There’s a lot of questions that can be asked pertaining to the ‘Chinese Investments’ in Zambia, but one thing I know as a Zambian is the West aren’t any better!
The West are worse! China saved Zambia after the West collapsed copper prices. The problem is capitalism -- not the Chinese.
A pertinent question would be " did the Chinese take anything without paying for it.
There were a number of comments about the Chinese businessman being there for his own interest. He is a businessman and the issue to address are (1) did he pay a fair price / wage (2) did he control the to the society there?
Wherever westerners landed in Africa in the last two centuries they brought along their armies to grab land and resources and even enslaved. Chinese were there for business. If the local population is against business then they should just inform the Chinese. I am sure they will move on - you can't do business where you aren't welcome.

China accounts for nearly half of the worlds copper demand and its used for domestic purposes. Copper prices have been exceptionally high because of Chinese demand. Once the supply of copper is increased by say, a Zambian Chinese copper export, then prices will be declining as demand for copper outside of Zambia and other exploited African nations decreases.
China is after self sufficiency now. So you should be happy for capitalist copper to be falling in price. By the way, you do realise that China is practising PURE capitalism, right? China is a mixed economic system. Communism that is using capitalism as a tool to securing prosperity. Its gravely unsustainable and hopefully we both will be dead of old age before the world turns into complete Armageddon when 1.4 billion hungry Chinese mouths, coupled with the rest of the population, battle to survive in an almost extinct natural world.

Zambia is an independent country. If Zambians don't want Chinese in their country, the Chinese wouldn't come. A gentleman just said the Chinese are safer in Zambia than the average Zambian. It's not about race. It is a class thing. Aren't rich Zambians safer than non rich Zambians? We black people complain too much.

40 years ago, china open the door to allow western factories and companies get in china to invest and build factories and companies. Then china learned these technologies. Based on these technologies, China get the chance to develop. Africa should catch this chance China is giving. First, Africa should learn technologies from those china companies. Second, to use Chinese investment high speed develop the economy. China is teaching how to fish, not directly give you the fish. Now africa has the source to make Chinese companies coming. If the source is gone, Chinese companies will leave. So Africa must catch the current time, to learn Chinese companies technologies. Chinese culture is that we never like to give people things(this is religion culture, not Atheist country

Also, you can own land and still be dirt poor, and if you're dirt poor you haven't got money for seeds, for machines, for irrigation, for workers, etc. They need someone to help them break that circle.

Am Zambian and the biggest problem we face is that we like being spoon fed and we get comfortable too quickly, we can not own and run our business and investments we prefer others doing it for us. That's why we are exploited & the exploitation will go on, its only the exploiters that will change. Everything is blamed on the government but we the people are the biggest problem, instead of changing our thinking we put blame on the wind.
The problem with the Chinese is that they’re ham fisted with their approach. They have only recently started to venture out of their country, and are not yet skilled in the ways of sweet talking other people and using diplomacy effectively. They want to manage Africans the same way they do their own people. They live in gated communities, and only communicate with the locals while barking orders. Chinese presence is a net positive, IMO. But if they don’t improve their approach, sooner or later the resentment will boil over. The responsibility to protect African workers and resources lies in the hands of the leaders.

Over the past 4 Decades China has lifted 800 Million people out of absolute poverty and is on target to create a moderately prosperous socialist society with Chinese Characteristics

The disadvantage of having Chinese around is ....competition. They will aggressively push you to improve. For example. the local chicken sellers in the video complained about Chinese farmer lowering price and feeding chicken with vitamins. A smart seller will always learn from their rivals, complain won't help.
On that one I agree with you 100% I know there is s very big issue of African governments making very lopsided deals in favour of Chinese investors and bad policies in protection of local enterprises.
However Africans need to wake up and understand the world is moving at a very high competitive pace, and the solution is matching and bettering the competition. If the Chinese farmer inn Africa finds a clever way to farm and reduce his operating costs to sell at a cheaper price then stop complaining and do better. Why should an already impoverished population pay more for your chicken just because you don't want to find innovative/creative ways to lower his food costs??
@@hellespont1 the reason why locals can't improve is because they don't have the means to do it. They probably can't source the vitamins (hormones) that the Chinese farmer is using. Do you think it's fair that a competitor with a much more privileged and educated background can go into a less privileged village and outcompete the locals?
The problem is that the government doesn't exist for such issues of unfair competition in Zambia and that is a major problem for Zambians. The Chinese are showing no decorum and ruthlessly use their advantage to crush the local competition. If the Chinese cared for Zambians, as many here are blindsided the think, then they wouldn't be competing with the locals on such a fundamental level. Look at the result of the low prices also. Instead of a better quality meat for the actual cost of farming it, the Zambians are settling for lower quality meat boosted with hormone but paying a slightly lower price.
The West sacrificed itself via cheapness in the same way. We used to have great quality goods. But China began manufacturing on economies of scale that are unfathomable and brought prices down so low that it sent hundreds of thousands of people out of work and pushed them into the service industry. Now we are actually paying a high price for very cheap quality goods since China has essentially monopolised manufacturing of countless goods. That's how they accelerated so quickly to such economic prosperity that they have today. Now who was stupid in this situation? Western consumers were the stupid ones. Now they neither have quality goods nor a cheap price and they certainly can't start a company to manufacture an alternative that will compete with the Chinese goods. Our governments in the west have screwed us.

Its complex. The issue is they are operating in a low on zero regulatory framework. Do you think using vitamins and maybe growth hormones is necessarily good because you gain a competitive advantage. Look at all the obesity and associated diseases in the Western World due to companies always trying to squeeze profit at the expense of quality of living. Not really. Comparatively speaking, if the West sees Africa as a lost cause after being run out, then it will wait for the day that Africans run the Chinese out of their country as well. The West has struggled with trying to change Africans, especially the African non-europeans to get them to accept ways of life that they think will get them out of poverty.
The Chinese know that doing token good will gestures will not last. But the Chinese don't need much time to take control of the political system there also. All they need is a propaganda machine in Zambia and they will be a permanent resident. No one will know of the extent of the human rights atrocities against Zambians and things will simply work, but only for the Chinese.

I was working in Zambia in 2010 and left when I realized that I'm not helping the locals. What they needed was basic infrastructure and I was selling IT services. I'm happy to see that Zambians are having a better life than when I was there.

It is a complicated situation, but I guess sometimes, chinese don't help its own case with a communication model that isn't customized to the local situation.
For example, chinese companies will often build worker dormitories to house their staff. There are benefits for the companies - in terms of costs and control, and for their staff in terms of allowing their staff adapt easily into a new environment.
But to the locals, what they often see is chinese companies with housing that have a huge wall around it. It's like chinese bring along its great wall everywhere they go! The locals will start to imagine what mischief these chinese foreigners are plotting behind their walls.
The locals' rental market also does not benefit from the chinese foreigners. Chinese loves buying properties, and we drive up property prices wherever we go! It is good for the rich local landowners, but most of the poor will see chinese oppressing them until they cannot own properties in the own cities.
So chinese create a lot of unhappiness among the locals in these ways. And lack of communication with the local community, creates a lack of understanding and emmity between the locals and the chinese.
But I think with time, these issues are just speed bumps that can be resolved eventually.

If you knew China and you really knew the west, you will know that there is quite a difference between them. They will both exploit you because they have them means and opportunity. And Zambias development mostly depends on Zambia. The Chinese will pay you peanuts. The west will pay you better and also actually help the people. But in the end they cannot help you much more than you can help yourself.
There cases that Chinese employers like you see in this documentary have locked up their Zambian employees in the factories to work for weeks and live in the boundaries of the factory under slave labour conditions without setting foot outside. I guess you are still ok with Africans being slaves. At least, The westerners of this 21st century have some conscience to offer better conditions to their African employees.
There were westerners in Zimbabwe, with huge farms and Zimbabwe was feeding Africa until Zimbabwe themselves decided to take land away from the westerners.
At the moment, Its likely there are more westerners and more western companies than Chinese in Zambia.
