Can’t disagree with anything you’ve said… with one caveat. Leather motorcycle jackets that see thousands of miles a year in hot, dry, cold, and wet weather exacerbated by 60-80 mph winds might be an exception. I clean and condition my motorcycle leather once a year, and so far so good for the past 15 years…
Beautiful jacket! I’ve used Obenaufs on older black and brown jackets. Took two coats, but revived them beautifully. Picked up old Sears leather jackets at thrift stores , 70s jackets, I wear often and love old style jackets. Plus I’m short and have short arms and these jackets fit me so much better.
In the future you might try putting the jacket down flat on a table (on top of a towel to keep the table clean). This allows you to provide the needed pressure while your applying the conditioner without having to put your hands inside the jacket.
You’re definitely right about all the conflicting and divided opinions on conditioning a leather jacket. I just rubbed one of mine down with some Venetian Leather Balm and the label itself says to try one of their other conditioners for leather jackets. That alone is probably already sacrilege for a lot of leather jacket guys. But if you know the properties of the leathers and conditioners you’re using, it’s super hard to mess up leather.
I like bick 4.. it’s a great conditioner it literally doesn’t change the color or anything it just acts as a lotion almost and absorbs perfectly into the leather. Never had any issues over using or under using. It turned out great though!
Look up a new video about comparison of leather conditioners, only Apple won above Bick 4, so Bick 4 is good one to buy. I am just finishing LeatherCPR and I liked it, but I will purchase Bick 4 or APPLE now, because they seemed to perform even better.
The jacket darkened because of the product you used, not because of the technique and method of application. Some products darken the leather and some of them don't, no matter how much you press.....
@Jake def do an experiment with Beef Tallow. Like to see how you feel the differences are. Im really not a fan of putting synthetics and plant oils on leather. And I bet this would work better..
You probably just barely saved that jacket. Leather and jacket’s don’t fix themselves,. Once the surface is starting to crack and you can see the lower surface it’s past due. Cracks will continue to deepen and get worse, especially on wrinkles, creases and folds. The deeper brown is probably closer to the original color. Sun fading on one arm might be the arm that was hanging out a car window for years. Sometimes the wrinkles, folds and fades tell a story. Good job saving it. Take care.
Used to be that leather makers would order their stock a very long time ahead of production and who knows how long the tannery had it around before the sale. Which led to the common use of conditioner after buying anything leather. Now we have such just in time ordering that there is really no need for conditioning for quite some time.
@@almostvintagestyle just listened to a fullgrain podcast from a couple weeks ago where the guy from Ashland leather got some 1940's calf leather recently from Horween. Granted it was a stack of rejects from then that had some build up of rot over the years. But, Ashland makes wallets and other small goods so that they made do with the good parts. And the customers who like leather with character get some great pieces.
Great video! Would love to see a video about cleaning the inside of leather jackets to remove sweat, BO, smoke etc. I’ve seen so much conflicting information where some people say a certain method worked wonders while others say it doesn’t work at all or some of them sound just downright unsafe.
I enjoy your style of video. It seems like it's off the cuff and genuine. Really enjoyed the topic because I purchased an Aero Sheene jacket in front quarter horsehide right around two years ago and I was curious on conditioning the jacket...looks like it'll be a while. Haha! Also, I contacted Horween out of curiosity since it was their leather on the jacket and they are with you, basically saying don't conditioning it

What product do you use for conditioning?
Lately, ive been using Leather Honey.

Nice jacket, I had one similar it was a German jacket from the 30’s. I traded a Woodstock album for it in 1970.
Thank you for the videos! Please make more.
when ya coming back into gather kava?
How about leather car seats? I bought used car and my seat is cracked already and I hate it😢
If it's already cracked, it would need to be repaired. Conditioning sadly won't fix that
@@almostvintagestyle There are no holes, but like cuts, or creases though.
Well cuts are still pretty far gone. I'm not sure if there are specific car leather products though
What happens if leather is "over conditioned"?
It can feel really gross, cause the thread to rot snd break, and if you're in a humid environment, even cause damage to the leather
Have you ever used Horse oil?
How's the result?
now rub it down with a t shirt or an old towel
Which Saphir product do you use on leather jackets?

In some cases yes, in some cases no. I've conditioned several jackets and I stand by what I said. I've replicated the results.

Such a diamond in the rough. It for sure needed conditioning and looks perfect now.
Thanks! I'm really happy with the results

So the leather had been sitting around for an extremely long time?

Oooof yeah I don't know if I can help with that. If it was really bad I'd probably just replace the whole liner

I'd love to get a Real McCoy's, Aero or Perfecto One Star double rider someday. I'm really impressed by these Brands.
use elephant snott to bring leather back to softness
