    Why don't we simply read and write directly in this phonetic alphabet given how valuable it is to learn? It seems so much simpler than the English alphabet given the lack of ambiguity in pronunciation. It seems so strange to me to learn a new, phonetic alphabet just to learn how to pronounce words written in another alphabet.

      @@TuneYourEnglish Naturally, but wouldn't it be much easier to understand Shakespeare, for example, and his preference for iambic feet and meters, and where he violates it, if we transcribed it phonetically?
