It’s meant to know who comes and goes multiple people can have a different key to get into the same place. Each Person would open a different lock when coming and going
Looks like about 30 minutes of maintenance a year would keep that very simple design running as is forever. Maybe an hour if you wanted to go absolutely ham on it.

It's also good on farms when you can't get to a bolt. When you are surrounded by sheep, it's easier to get to a lock 🔐
