Another excellent video. I love seeing Jupiter. You have wonderful goats, but I have to say he is my favorite. ❤We have a 120-day growing season here on our homestead, so when you said that your growing season is 200 days I immediately though of all the things I could grow in such a long season. I have dealt with my short season by building 4 small greenhouses (out of cull lumber, scrap wood, etc.) and they have helped immensely. Seeing yours always makes me want to build something larger someday. I would have no problem filling it up. I truly believe there is no such thing as too many plants. 😊
When I was in high school since 50 years ago, I took a year off botany. We had a fantastic greenhouse attached to our classroom and it had raised beds. What a way to grow all school year! I don't think anyone disliked doing that work. It's was a tough class and our teacher left at the end of the year to join the faculty of Michigan State University. He was that good of a teacher!
Teachers like that are SUCH a blessing. I had a history teacher that truly loved his job and the kids and it showed. I'll never forget him! To learn from someone with a passion is the best way to learn!
I love the look of raised bed gardens! I also think they are much easier to care for and grow in. Really enjoyed your insight on the fruit tree and blueberry growing. Thank you! 😊
I put our spent coffee grounds around our blueberry bushes and they seem to love it. I just purchased 3 more plants. Waiting till after the ice we are supposedly going to get this evening to plant them.
Heather, you are doing an amazing job planning, gardening and feeding your family! I’m in Maine and I struggle with brussels sprouts! I Can grow cabbages, broccoli no problem….ill keep trying…
I love the babies names!! I would love to eventually get a few of the metal beds. I don't have the standing water issues you do but they look really good. The greenhouse will be amazing when it is filled with them!
I’m from SC and muscadines are part of my heritage. We have a vineyard near and they are organic and awesome. The only grapes I will ever make jelly with again ❤
This is my favorite so far this year! Delighted for the raised bed decision for the greenhouse - I am certain y'all will have the opportunity to grow with fewer challenges (like the over-wet and digging pests) once you're able to get them all converted. That brand of garden soil has been our favorite one for a few years, too - we mix it with composted manure and mulch, as well. I didn't hear/see if you had more than one variety of blueberry, but I have read that having at least 2 varieties increases yeilds. (But keeping them alive through winter and getting a harvest is better than having weak or dead plants!)
@@SageandStoneHomestead Excited to see how they do, too! When the weather warms and the acidifier has a chance to start working (maybe a month to 6 weeks), will you be retesting the soil, so you'll know if you need to add a little more?
I can't grow inground at any time because we get an enormous amount of rain. We actually get more rain than Seattle does so raised beds, buckets, totes etc is what I grow in. Anything off the ground.
Your garden is shaping up to be productive and beautiful! We use the tractor to till and amend with farm compost. Grows pretty well. We are also in zone 7b and have clay soil. I will start seeds in the greenhouse first of March for brassicas. Then start the warm weather plants like tomatoes the first of April. We don’t direct sow until last of April. Our winter garden didn’t even get started. Something ate it. Gave me a rest time. Your strawberry plants look about like mine. We do get blueberries and also use soil acidified, compost, mulch, and something if birds start pecking out the seeds. Love watching food grow!
I was really expecting the vego beds to come in a bigger box lol. I wanna get my hands on some of them so bad. Alas... maybe next year. I'm gonna give cabbages and kale a shot this spring. Giving them a head start in the house and fingers crossed it doesn't get too hot too fast.
Your raised beds look amazing! I especially like the style of the round one you planted the peach tree in. I'm eager to see how the tree does in it! Will you be growing the peach tree in the greenhouse or move it out at some point? The goat kids are looking very good! I'm looking forward to Clover's babies!! It looks like spring there & has felt like it here, tomorrow we're supposed to get a couple inches of snow! 😕 Winter's not done with us yet!😊 God bless!
I am not sure about Liberty blueberries, but most blueberries need different varieties that have the same bloom time, in order to get a good crop. They do better with cross pollination.
the metal vego garden beds look so awesome and i never actually thought about useing metal beds my self but you have changed that becuase they look and sound like a good choice i just wish that vego shipped to denmark
The best soil for blue berries is going to be mainly peat , as peat has perfect ph for them. 4.5-5.5 ph . I got a bail of just peat and added worm castings and other organic nutrients and each year to upkeep ph I do garden sulfur each spring at same time as fertalizer(rabbit poop in my case lol). if leaves are red and its not fall you need to fix ph .
soil accidifiers take time to work. most take months. if leaves start showing red ,vinegar water to 4.5ph can help the plants temperary wile sulfur does its job in soil. they need acidity to absorb nutrients so most nutrient deficencys in blueberrys is direct result of ph and not soil fertility.
We use the bails of peat too. We have 8 blueberry bushes...the oldest is 7" tall! We just planted 2 new ones last fall(Chandler)...they are supposed to have nickel size blueberries!
GoodMorning Heather! Just wanna say ever since I found your channel I have been non stop watching your videos!☺️ They’re so educational and have been helping me prep and learn a lot more about homesteading and how to properly care for the animals that I want in my homestead (not including the additional research and reading I’ve done on my own) as well as gardening! I hope you and your family have a wonderful day!🥺💞
I think your plan for the greenhouse is an awesome direction to go!! I love the containers, especially those on wheels! I heard an old wives' tale the other day that "thunder in February means frost in May". I really hope that isn't the case for us this year!! Unfortunately it does happen!😣 Thanks for sharing!! I’ve killed I think five blueberry plants since we’ve lived here at the lake and a couple peach trees…. I finally planted a peach tree in a huge planter , I can finally say I didn’t kill another one. It’s trying to bloom out leaves for the spring already! I’ll have to do the same with my blueberries if I ever get the nerve to try planting more. Focusing on starting all my own seeds for the garden this year and starting a strawberry bed… I’ve killed a lot of those before too. (Planted wrong) 😂with baby coming soon I just hope I’m able to get the garden in before he arrives 😰
@@SageandStoneHomestead I wish I could remember right off the top of my head, but my pregnancy brain doesn’t allow that🤦🏻♀️ I’ll look tomorrow when I go to feed rabbits!
as a idea until you can get your hands on enough raised beds is the way "simple living alaska" did their garden with built up beds in and out of their greenhouse. I am far from you or them but am in hard clay and my few in ground beds are built up like that and never get drowned yet.
I cut up 10x 55 gal barrels to make my raised beds and giant pots lol. I like to cut into 3's , making top a pot bottom a pot and center portion used as raised bed boarder lol . doesn't look pretty but grows lots of food
I’m very curious to see how those blueberries do for you. I’ve also had no success with blueberries in the past. Last year my local nursery told me that they really won’t grow where I am because our soil AND our water is too alkaline. So it might be worthwhile to test the ph of your water too
Lol, you're not that far from me, I'm moving from FL to GA and originally from Chicago. Im sure you know, aren't you worried with the grapes and your dog? As usual, love the video and content. Thank you for sharing
Heather how was the Kellog soil? Last year every bag I bought was more wood chips than soil. But in previous years if was great! If I had a greenhouse I would do raised beds and containers as well.
It's possible but maybe not. It's marketed as a container variety. These pots are 2 feet by 2 feet by 17 inches deep which is a lot bigger than the pot they came in, but I'll have to watch the plants to see! :)

I really like that wheeled container! Very neat. I didn't notice the wicking bottom when I was looking at the website the other day.
It's there somewhere!
I believe it! It just didn't catch my eye as a stationary picture. Lol!
Cute❤
with regards to raised wooden garden beds, as they rot, wrap plastic around it and build anther wooden frame around the plastic.
Yes I'm still debating on how to deal with those beds! We thought about building cedar around the existing beds.
We were not successful growing blueberries until we filled the whole bed with peat moss ONLY. Our blueberries are now thriving!
There is a lot of peat in this Kellog soil! Hopefully it works! It's been a struggle for sure!

I was surprised how little it feels sometimes but it does crank out a good amount of food!
Blueberries like fungally dominated soil, which is where the organic matter comes in
And the fungus does okay with the acidity? I wondered about this
