I am a fantastic gardener (I say that humbly... I’ve been doing it a very long time... it took a while to get here!) BUT, I’ve never grown strawberries and know nothing about them. Actually any fruit. I’m one that wants to master something before I add more to grow. Next year we start with strawberries! Thank you for sharing your experience! Any who.... I wanted to share that low potassium brings in pests. The aluminum in the rain water binds to the potassium in the soil. Less potassium in a plant creates more carbohydrates (sugars) and that’s what the bugs want. It also creates a thin cell structure and it’s easier for them to chew through. Heavily push the potassium next year and see if that helps. There are organic way to add more. A liquid may be your best bet.
Where are you located? Thanks so much for chiming in! We finally got some rain and I swear it seemed to really affect certain plants. This happened last year too after a rain. It seems my peppermint is acting as the canary in the cave. I was thinking it was aluminum. Previously I saw the planes leaving trails. SMH. I am goin to get some potassium!
Oh my gosh you are just the loveliest woman with such a pure heart to I share your traditions with strangers. I was raised by depression era parents that are now departed and your videos bring me comfort for the old ways they passed on to me. I started canning two garden years ago and I get to use my mamas things and her books, what a blessing right? So I old school/rebel can as some would say. Please keep your videos coming. They are just a joy to me! God Bless from Eastern Oregon 💕 Becky
I just love listening to you. My grandson (age 12) and I have been baking cookies and I’ve been processing lard and putting up pumpkin purée. We have been binge watching your videos as we’ve worked. You are fun to listen to and so educational. Thank you!
This video made me smile and nod my head yes!! I also live in Iowa, I am in the NE part and I had a bumper crop of tomatoes!! Mine were ready starting in Aug. I did roma and san marzano. I didnt water much either with the draught but it was a blessed year from the Father. My jars were all filled and I bought more. Thank you for your channel and all you share🥰🥰
Enjoyed this . I am 65 years old and always been in and around gardening . we have been married for 42 years and it is always a learning in progress. I love gardening and canning it gives me such great satisfaction. God bless you and your family
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us! It’s very cool to see how God provided even with less rain. He is faithful!! You are a true blessing and gifted teacher. God bless!!😊
I already posted Ruth Ann❤ i watch your utubes over and over I totally feel “at home” here. U and your family so very sweet. Such good helpers u have❤ Ruth Ann Saturday nite at 8pm Nov 4/23 I lost my very very best friend the love of my life I have been watching your utube cuz u make me feel good and watching u talking about water bathing. I love your way I am 72, as the love of my life was. What is it like when a Mennonite lose a family member? I need the comfort❤
I’m with you, Ruth Ann, I don’t use pesticides. That’s the reason we have guinea fowl. Unlike chickens, the guineas will eat the bugs in the garden, but not the plants.
Had to come into work at 5am this morning....brightened my day to see this pop up! Thankful for a new video to get me through this day!!! Much love from Cedar Rapids!
I must say that you will never bore me with squash recipes. Out here in Indonesia we got flooded with tomatoes if we plant them right at the end of the rain season. Also if we plant squash or pumpkins, it will give us a whole lot of pumpkins to last us 2 whole years😂😂😂😂. We always end up giving & selling some away.
@@sherrikarlstedt6442 fully vine ripened pumpkin can last up to a year in room temp in a dark & cool room. I once or twice manage to keep a few up to 2 yrs long. Squashes don’t last that long but their plants keeps fruiting for up to 5 yrs before stopping. I don’t keep squashes around that long. I’d usually gave away or sold what my family couldn’t eat by setting up purchase order 2 weeks before our harvest. That way we won’t end up with too many to eat. The same goes for tomatoes when we used to plant them. These days due to rat infestation, we couldn’t keep a large veggie garden. We still never need to buy ginger, lemon grass, galanga and turmeric as we kept them in pots. They never stop producing either.
Some gardening years are good for some things and not others . Each year is a new adventure. I’ve been gardening for 30 years. Love growing my own food and flowers. ❤ thank you for sharing your skills . Love your channel
Ruthanne, I live in Manitoba Canada, our winters can reach -50 with the windchill. I have never covered my June bearing or ever bearing strawberries and they grow abundantly and multiply rapidly every year. When I don't have Sulphur for my garden for my fruit trees or other plants, I crush a boiled egg and put it in the soil amongst the roots. I boil it 20 minutes so the Sulphur dioxide is more concentrated. It does help. Try using a staple gun and zip ties on your stakes for your peas. I make a notch In my stakes about every 8 - 12 inches with a table saw and then I can use string or chicken wire or netting and it doesn't slide once I tie it on.
Thanks for the garden observations… I’m skipping the straw on the strawberries! ( it’s predicted to be a warmer winter here) Your picket fence with all the flowers inspired me, I am going to do THAT!
I plant peas seeds from the Amish that are called dual peas. I use chicken wire for them to climb. I plant them on both sides of the wire. They really produce well for us. That variety is my favorite.
The mama turkey in the garden with all the little ones under her was such a great picture! And it looked like you might be raising pineapple tomatoes. I grew them last year-different from my other heirlooms. I almost lost all of my strawberries three years ago by covering them. The voles lived nicely through the winter since they had food and shelter. Those rodents!! I'm in Okoboji, Iowa. 😊
It sounds crazy but…ma used to give the 3 of us kids a piece of garden hose to beat our pear trees. Start at the bottom of the trunk and walking around the tree, keep slowly moving up the trunk as far as you can reach. You dont want to hurt the bark so just use a piece of hose or something similar. The reason to do this is to improve the circulation of the tree. My grandpa did this to all his fruit and nut trees. The years we did do this we had good yields. I hope this helps somehow! Looking back, the folks driving up the highway right in front of our house probably thought we were maniacs just running around beating on trees and occasionally each other ! 😏 Take care and God bless! 😊
I am tickled to be one of your favourites! :) I have not bought certo since I watched your video on making jam without pectin! That is a great savings and it is so easy to do. I also covered my strawberries with straw and leaves too early last winter and voles or mice or rats eat a great deal of the plants. I had to buy more plants. So I will not cover with straw either this year. (Zone 5 in Ontario). I am glad to hear your findings on this matter! So enjoy all your videos and yes God is good all the time! Blessings, Diane
The sweet turkey momma reminded me of Psalm 91:4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler. ❤️
Family is much more important than UA-cam! I took break from mine this year and I don't have nearly the following you do. We had no help to get h hay done this year so I stepped up, teddering , stacking bales delivering wagons. Doing that, the garden, homeschooling my. 4 year old, just got too much with UA-cam. You can have some of our rain. We got so much here in New England. Hay and gardening was certainly interesting
You and your family are such a heartwarming pleasure to watch. Your home is so full of love, joy, contentment, and patience. You are a wealth of knowledge and sharing that engrained knowledge with others as you live your daily life, seems so very natural. You inspire me and teach me something new with every video. I feel so blessed to have found your channel❤️
I'd love a video about your elderberry syrup. We have abundant harvests on our relatively young plants and have had trouble finding resources to help me turn the fresh berries/juice into elderberry syrup. So many folks use dried berries. I trust your methods and love learning from you. Thank you for bringing us all along during your gardening season. God is so good and we are so very blessed.
RuthAnn, I'm a new subscriber & I just love your channel, your personality & your love of the Lord! You are a fantastic wife & mother. I love watching your love for your family & animals. I have also learned some things from you in my 60's. Your cooking & preserving is amazing. Most of all, I love it when you say you're messy, an adult & you clean up your messes! I am messy too, so I love it when you say that. Since I'm retired now, I have been binge watching your wholesome channel. Grandma Kim❤️
Have you ever heard of comfrey? You can put it at the base of your fruit trees, and it will increase your yield and heal your trees. It’s a really cool plant. You can also make salves out of it. I love your channel. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
What a great all around harvest you had. My husband and I have about 800 sq ft of garden area and we raise lots of great stuff. I do supplement by buying bulk fruits and veggies from local Mennonites. I love having my pantry shelves full of all the food we can. I tried the dry canning of potatoes just the other day and we love the taste. Thanks for sharing.
Love this! I wonder if your dogs actually thinned out your potatoes allowing you to have larger potatoes, so less numbers but larger good quality. Plus like you said they kept pests out of garden... you might want to keep letting them in??
Learning something new &/or verifying tried and true are some of the things I enjoy about gardening - if it all was perfect every time we would take the blessings to much for granted ☺
Nice reminder to not worry about the drought so much. My peppers, onions, tomatoes did great without rain, but I regret not watering my strawberries after they bloomed b/c it didn’t rain and I got no berries:(.
I enjoyed the recap. I live in the southeast Texas and we are running the air conditioner right now but will be dropping into the 50s tonight. I’m definitely a warm weather girl. I think it is great to celebrate the successes and figure out why there were great and not so great results so you can learn how to do better. The Momma a baby turkeys are so cute! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and lifestyle with us. I really enjoy and I always learn something and enjoy your sweet attitude towards life!!
My sister gave me a bunch of ever bearing strawberries this year. Some are doing well and others aren’t. She came over yesterday and told me to keep cutting the brown leaves and runners off. So we’ll see if it works. Both of us are organic growers which is a challenge amidst people who use pesticides all around us. Last year I let my garden lay fallow, tested the soil, and did remediation. Most of my garden is now planted but we still have some cold nights coming next week. Yesterday I put of 10 more walls of water which helps when it gets cold. I cover the tops with reemay. I thought about you first thing this moring as I headed out to begin my chores. I made my list yesterdy and got the list completed today. Then I came in and made dinner for tonight. Breakfast for dinner sounded good and it will buscuits and sausage gravey and probably a fried egg on top. Tomorrow is another day.
I love your channel. You put God and family first like we're supposed to.Granny started teaching me how to can, pull weeds, churn butter, I didn't get the hang of milking the cow though. Love your common sense approach to chords, meal planning and life in general. Greetings from East The Tennessee 😊
Thank you for sharing. Your truthfullness is so refreshing in the current days. As Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and life, the truth sets us free.
As a kid we got sent out to the garden with a bottle half full of water to pick potato bugs. Thank you for your advice and taking the time to do these videos. I love learning what works well for others and how you do things around the farm.
Wonderful video; thanks for sharing your gracious thoughts! I so love seeing the children helping, & the special baby turkeys gathered under their momma’s wings! All those little legs! Blessings to everyone 🤗💗🇨🇦
Through my years of gardening I’ve found that some years some things don’t do well at all, but there is always at least one vegetable or fruit that produces so bountifully. Like you, I’m always thankful for what the Lord gives me and try to take care of it even if I feel like it’s too much, because next year that particular thing might not do well at all. This year my fruits all did exceptionally well, as did my tomatoes. My green beans did okay, but not great. I got very few potatoes this year, too.
Love your videos, and your channel! Please show how you start grape plants, my dad who has passed started his own and I didn't learn how to do it. Thank you so much for your time that you share with us.
We have trouble growing strawberries here (because of deer, birds, and other wild things). I have seen metal stock fence posts with 2 by 4 boards held in place (with strong metal wood screws) to the tops of the metal stock fence posts. Long strings of heavy cords, or coated wire, or heavy netting is then attached to the boards and brought down to where climbing beans or peas may reach them. My parents followed the rule of growing The Three Sisters (corn, beans, and winter squash). They planted corn first (leaving a little extra room between the corn plants and rows). When the corn had put out their first real leaves, then they planted climbing bean seeds beside each corn plant. After, the beans started growing (and some of them had sent out their strings to attach to something) then they planted the winter squash seeds among the corn and bean plants (not close together because winter squash takes a lot of space). The broad leaves of the winter squash shade out most weeds and help slow down water loss from the soil. However, the corn, beans, and squash/pumpkin garden is not the place to take small children; because, it is a perfect place for snakes to hunt and hide. We always went into that garden armed with a sharp hoe (just in case we found a copperhead snake). If you find one copperhead, it's mate is somewhere near by.
Your videos are so refreshing! My garden didn't do well for 2 reasons we were in a drought and I lost my husband in March so I am learning a new way of life.
This is my first year growing strawberries, and I was just preparing to cover them. After listening to your experience in going to skip that step. Thank you.
The Turkey at the end with her babies reminds me of when I was little and I loved to sit under my grandmas robe while she cooked breakfast on Saturday morning😂♥️
Last year, I used spoiled hay from a farm I take care of her horses, so she allows me clean out her old hay before the new hay is delivered...apparently, the hay that year she purchased had been treated. My tomatoes 2 years ago did not make it, the green beans struggled and did not give my usual bumper crop. Even the nylon twine I used to tie up my tomatoes with a year after that killed the tomatoes. Very frustrating, but lesson learned.
I absolutely love all of your videos! You are so good at whatever you do! I can only hope to do as well as you! God is truly wonderful! God Bless you and your family.
Have you ever made Grape Hull Pies? My former M-I-L used to make them, so good!! A little country woman woman with 13 children, she didn’t waste anything. She would fry and hot can sausage in its grease, then just re-heat. I wish I’d learned a lot more from her😢.
When I used to brush my cat, I would sprinkle the hair from her brush in the garden to repel rodents. It might work with your dog's hair also. Couldn't hurt!

What a blessing for your family to have all of the fresh homegrown fruits and vegetables that you raise. Your channel is one of my favorites!

Rejuvenate the older Cherry tree by cutting it back drastically to a level that can easily be covered by a frost cloth in spring. You can also graft a different cherry tree to its root stock as well.

Thank you!!!!
I love staying to the end to see your GOD IS GOOD statement! I love to be reminded of that! ❤
I lived on the farm a couple years ago and I remember every occupation we have on the farm. I love to hear you from you farm!
Now I want to start planning next year's garden already. 😆
Same
I learn a lot from you. Great channel!
Beautiful flowers 🌸 life never goes how I expected! 😂
I could listen to you all day🥰
Thank you for sharing. Your truthfullness is so refreshing in the current days. As Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and life, the truth sets us free.
Awe, I’m one of your favorites. ❤. Many blessings in your coming year.
I watched a second time and got more out of it!! Your larder looks beautiful!!❤
Hen you comb out your dogs, save the hair and place it around your garden in the spring. It works on my garden most the time
Yes. We’ve done that in the past. Will try it again!!
As a kid we got sent out to the garden with a bottle half full of water to pick potato bugs. Thank you for your advice and taking the time to do these videos. I love learning what works well for others and how you do things around the farm.
Our cans had turpentine in them and also used for Japanese beetles
I absolutely love the Turkey and her babes in your garden.
Wonderful video; thanks for sharing your gracious thoughts! I so love seeing the children helping, & the special baby turkeys gathered under their momma’s wings! All those little legs! Blessings to everyone 🤗💗🇨🇦
I loved the picture of the mother turkey with the babies under her wings, reminded me of how God protects us - under his protection
I so enjoy listening to you and always stick around to the end.
Next year try putting dog hair from brushing your dog's into the garden area. The hair odor may help deter rodents. Worth a try
There is also Nitrogen in hair!♡
Thank you for the video yes please share how you propagate them.
I'm on your Favorite list . yay
You are my favorite too ❤. So much helpful information when we reflect back. Really appreciate you sharing it!
Ruth Ann you are our Favorite too!
We love your channel! Love the garden of veggies and fruits and also the flowers!
I really want to try this methods this next growing season!!
I love your videos, you are so uplifting. I wish you were my neighbor.
I wish I had more room to plant
And the health to work in a garden.
I absolutely love all of your videos! You are so good at whatever you do! I can only hope to do as well as you! God is truly wonderful! God Bless you and your family.
Yes, God is Good! ♥️
Love your vlogs. Wish you were on every day, but I know you are a very busy lady👍🏼👍🏼
A frame your pea poles, and netting. 😉
Have you ever made Grape Hull Pies? My former M-I-L used to make them, so good!! A little country woman woman with 13 children, she didn’t waste anything. She would fry and hot can sausage in its grease, then just re-heat. I wish I’d learned a lot more from her😢.
I loved seeing your turkey hen with all those little legs sticking out!
When I used to brush my cat, I would sprinkle the hair from her brush in the garden to repel rodents. It might work with your dog's hair also. Couldn't hurt!
It looked so funny seeing all those little legs under your mama turkey!😂
Another great video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
You are my favorite!! So happy I found your channel❤
Thankyou Ruth Ann and all your family for sharing your farm life with us. I love seeing your videos.
