I like the Green Airplane
it will go well with the buffalo baseball cap i ordered last week
now have the green hat to match, supper comfy :)
I flew the DC3 for 6 years (1,600 hours) 50 years ago & still have my original manual.
Weight & balance as the MSFS shows is correct with the MAC allowed anywhere between 13 & 26%
Fill up the front locker & the rest in the back & your in the ball park.
As for starting the ignition is not turned on until 9 to 11 blades (in our company) & when the engine starts the mixture is then turned to Auto Rich.
Yep same starting procedure as in the Dc6 with her Twin Whasp but in the Sim its not Simulated correctly, which isnt that bad in my opinion. In real life it can cause damage to your radial-engine when you try to ignite a cold and dry burning chamber. Im really envious of your experiences with the DC3!
The start procedure is probably the same as in the DC-6 i recon. Not sure it is possible to start the DC-3 that way with the logic it uses. But at least we have a DC-3 :D
I miss that from the DC-6 hearing the prop count. 3,6,9,12
Thank you as well Bill for sharing your knowledge :)
Love the Buffalo livery! I grew up in Hay River just south of Yellowknife and witnessed plenty of Buffalo planes landing/taking off at the local airport.
I wish I could see the buffalo warbird fleet in person
Nice video. For those struggling on landing, there is a nice mod that deletes a lot of the ovely present ground effect and what helps me a lot is instead of one brake key, use two keys, one for the left and one for the right wheel, very easy to quickly release one for a split second to keep it straight.
I have downloaded the DC-3 mod, I'll do a follow up vid if folks are interested. With the mod installed. At the very least a stream Sunday trying out all these extra bits of info.
Gorgeous
I found this too - that the balance was off. Once I corrected this, I could takeoff without flipping over. No wonder if you start ready to go on the runway, its has the elevator trim at negative 17. But you didn't balance it properly, I don't think. 26,200 is the maximum payload. If you notice, the cargo weight towards the back is much heavier than the front (the pilot's wt). I reduce the back weight some but you don't have to. What you need to do is move that circle to the center between the two bold lines and then you are centered.
This, but also another reason why the aircraft kept flipping shortly after takeoff is due to the aircraft itself. It behaves in-game how it does in real life. It likes to pitch backward and take off early, so you have to counteract that by pitching forward until about 97 knots. Once in the air, however, it doesn't have sufficient airspeed to stay flying, so it stalls and crashes into the ground. So to avoid that from happening, you pitch it forward a bit to level it out while you're off the ground and hold it steady as you reach about 120 knots. You can see a small yellow line on the airspeed indicator that indicates that, so keep the needle on or above it and you're good to continue climbing.
I overloaded her deliberately by 1000 lbs. She took off no problems. I then decided to do a robust turn at about 500 ft. Left wing dropped and the nose went down vertical and I was dead. Nothing I could have done it happened so fast.
i thought i heard a bang the other night, Handy to know information for all of use learning the DC-3
I should also add, I repeated the flight again with 1,000 lbs overloaded. I let the speed increase to 100 kias and made a gentle turn on course before climbing to 8,000 ft with no issues. She's a mule.
Technically you should go magnetos > energize > wait 5 seconds > Mesh > wait 4 seconds > primer.
Technically, it's a video game and you should leave your mom's basement.
nice one
Thanks
I have an issue with uncontrollably steep pitching up on takeoff. Even with full nose down trim
whats your weights, flaps GC? have noticed you can take off quite easily with out flaps.
Try double checking those see if it makes a difference. Also there is the flightsim.to DC-3 improvement mod
Also I watched Dan Gryder flying his real one and they had to push foward on the wheel right after take off. I think the real plane has this habbit.
Unfortunatly the sound in the cockpit is not that good and the rollout behavior it totally unrealistic....I had the luck to fly one on the FO-Seat with a little crosswind and we never gave that much rudderinput. We just gave a little frontpressure on the yoke to get the tail down as late as possible but the plane never behaves that restless like in the sim. Try to land with +5kts crosswind and it gets totally uncontrollable with just one false rudderinput. That really annoys me. Also the takeoff behavior is strange. Even with 80% payload the plane want to lift up as soon as the tail comes up, even with flaps 0 and downtrim. Byside that the plane is really fun to fly.
Edit: I now saw the whole Video and would love to give some advices. There are fix powersettings for Takeoff,Meto,Climb and cruise. Climb is about 36" at 2300RPM and cruise is somewhere between 28" and 30" (depents on weight and estimated traveltime) and 2050 RPM. 2400 RPM is way too high for a cruise
New Edit: Use the duckworks anhancement mod!!! Its totally awesome know. Much more realistic.
Thank you I shall try those settings you suggested :)
Spot on @ceejay - The DC3 was fun except at night with Thunderstorms & you have METO power on near the LSA & your still going down.
10 kts Max crosswind but we did take-offs with stronger than that using engines to keep strait.
@@billolgaau We also controlled the DC3 the whole time with the throttle levers on the ground except in turns where the Tailwheel was unlocked. But its hard in the Simulator when you have only one thrust lever 😀 The plane was very calm and "slow" in its movement because its a heavy plane. In the Sim it pushes from left to right like a punchingball even with nearly MTOW. I really hope they fix this soon but I love flying it anyway
@@HELERsx I went strait from Cessna, Pipers etcs & DH82 Biplane Tiger Moths to the DC3 never having flown twins, Constant Speed Props, Retractable gear or flown out of the circuit at night & that was the four of us that had just got the job.
After the engineering course we spent 1.5 hours each learning how to taxi.
Where did you get the Buffalo Livery?
Can pick it up from flightsim.to search DC-3 :)
@@thetwocats Thanks. Now one last question. What are the 2 switches just left of the battery on/off switch?
Thanks for the vid. I’m going to definitely pick up this livery. I had the good fortune to fly PNR & JKM decades ago with Joe. DC-3 is just a grand old lady.
@@ghettobirdie QS = quick start. CD = cold & dark start.
@@TheGunterGlieben is an a mazing plane, over here in Netherlands in the summer you can book short flights on one. should have a buffalo baseball cap soon.. its on its way :)
Have some vids of DC-3 in shorts what a noise it makes
What airport is that?
It's 42CM Cedar Mountain a payware scenery from //42 same folks that make the freedom fox, can get it from orbx.
Eater egg I was one of the Devs who worked on making it 42CM
How do you get Gal and LB to show? I have L and KG
You can change the units with the slider in top right corner. In the weights and balance page
@@thetwocats That's what I mean, the slider only has L and KG. Even slid over to L the total weights are kg. I'll have to just weight conversion, that's all
@@sampalmer9628 have you checked you unit settings ins the msfs main options?
Think there may be some unit options in there. I'll double check when home from work :)
@@thetwocats you are absolutely correct! I didn't even think of the main options. I always have it on metric as I fly from Europe, so it's been set since I got the sim. I switched from Metric to US and I have it set up now, looking forward to following your settings ... I may be able to fly, but bloody useless when it comes to much else :)
@@sampalmer9628 I'll be doing a follow up vid using the mod from flightsim.to, playing around with weights etc and trying the power settings Bill suggested :)
What actually is funny, is that the "correct" weights and Balances, is about a full airplane... so the flightmodel is not designed to fly empty at all?
i can say for certain its only been programmed for full weight. I picked this from the view i refences in about section. worth checking out it covers things about the flight model in more detail.
Biggest problem (besides my control of the DC-3 and Twin Beechon takeoff and landing) is the Aux tanks being artificially empty. Anyone know of a fix for that?
There is a mod on flightsim.to I'll be playing around with it over weekend, chances are I'll do a follow up vid.
Great video, but not very realistic to flying an actual DC-3.
thank you, as in the location or the flight model, my settings?
Doing a follow up vid on the mod from flight sim.to
Where is Balance? Is it in DEV mode? I have only weight. I see only weight part, like this guides.gamepressure.com/microsoft-flight-simulator/gfx/word/560598953.jpg .
you can stretched the weights/balance box in game out to the side and it will show the GC :)
@@thetwocats yes? I didnt know, will check!
