This was a childhood dream of Floor's, to be able to perform with THE Henk Poort. He was the one who REALLY got her interested in music when she was a teenager (she had attended a rendition of The Phantom of the Opera with her parents). So we really have Henk to commend for Floor's stellar career now. :)

@@christinaalgate4899 It was STORMING while they were singing, enough for the tent to spring leaks in multiple places. Sometimes during the video you can see the leaks, if you watch for them. Henk and Floor actually brought the house down. Why not, since this was the last performance of the last episode that season. :D
For me this is the Duet of the Century. The "rock" arrangement comes from the Nightwish, because they have recorded and performed this with their first singer Tarja Turunen. Henk Poort has performed this role hundreds of times because he was Eric on "Phantom's" Dutch production. He used the distortion there just to honor Floor's metal background. Glad you liked. Henk Poort was the original Phantom Of The Opera in the Dutch version
The arrangement, particularly the 2nd half, is based on the Nightwish cover of the song, done with original singer Tarja Turunen. Henk Poort is a professional opera singer & stage musical vocalist, as well as an actor & voice actor. He provided the voice of Gaston in the Dutch dub of Beauty and the beast. Henk sang with distortion here for only the 2nd time ever. The 1st being earlier this season of the show when singing Disturbed's version of "The Sound of Silence".
"He's got a nice voice too..." you bet... he actually played the Phantom in the Musical for many years!

Hi, yes the show " Beste Zangers" is on Dutch television for several years.
And every tv season has different (Dutch) singers. So its worth to check it out further. But the most important part of the show is the band and vocal backup. The are incredible and play all kind of style of music, all live! Thanks to the band of Marcel Fisser the vocalist are capable to perform in a fantastic way!
you can try all the rendition from Beste Zangers - maybe starting with Shallow
But do it with video’s from jenniezelf. She gives context and subtitles.

Damn, I arrived late for the chat... :( Short notices... Henk was the dutch phantom for many years and andrew lloyd webber's preferred... She sang a D6 for 8 sec... Sierra Boggess sang an E6 on 25th anniversary for 3,5 sec... This version obviously is not the original... It's a recreation of Nightwish's version with Tarja e Marko (Very more heavy - worth see it)... It was the first time Henk growl... And if you could, please react to floor acoustic version of How's the Heart on planet rock (Just her, troy and a guitar... I swear you won't be regret...) By the way, your reactions are lovely, pausing or not...

Jut FYI this is the second time he used distortion, the first was in the sound of silence which he sang for floor. It was however, the first time he used distortion in this particular piece.

Wrong . This have nothing to do with nightwish version . Its a re edition of the original A.L W . Broadway musical with michael crawford and sarah brightman ,but more fast and rockish Even all the dialogues are the same . The Nightwish version changed the notes and the text.

It's not true that you need to skip parts of the video to avoid copyright issues, short pauses also do the trick.

Context is appreciated. The format of this show is not that of a competition. No winners or losers.
The producers get several singers from different styles and backgrounds and take them to a resort in Ibiza. In this season, there were:
- Floor Jansen: heavy metal singer, best selling artist in Netherlands, only artist of the group that consistently perform in shows for over 50 thousand people and yet, someone who can walk around in Netherlands without noone stopping her to ask for an autograph.
- Henk Poort: opera and musicals singer Would do TV shows too. Was pretty famous in Netherlands. Floor shows in the 1st episode to be almost a groupie of Henk haha.
- Emma Heesters: UA-cam cover artist
- Rolf Sanchez: half dutch half caribbean artist who lives 1/2 1/2 between Miami and Amsterdam. He sings spanish latino songs (latino like from America Latina, not from Ancient Rome)
- Ruben Annink: don´t know much about him. I think he sings more romantic songs?
- Samantha Steenwijk: she is a dutch folk singer
- Tim Akkerman: a rock singer. Apparently had a famous band in the past (not sure if in Europe or just netherlands and played big concerts, in a solo career now, but apparently also well known in Netherlands)
Except for Rolf Sanchez (last name is actually Wienk), all of them have double letters in their names. Apparently the dutch love double letters.
Ok, what happens is that the artists get to know each other, hear about their stories, and each night, there is an "artist of the day" and all other singers will perform for that host artist. The show host will talk with the artist of the day, ask him about his life (so the audience knows about them too) and make questions that lead to a theme on which another artist decided to choose a song to sing for them. So some songs chosen are PRETTY emotional...
Like... a song Tim made for his disabilitated brother who faced many difficulties in his life, covered by Floor (Winner)
Songs an artist loves because of her mother who suffered from a grave disease
A song X artist used to hear with his now deceased father
Or just a song Y artist always loved, or remembers him of good moments in his life
Etc, etc, etc
So each one gets to try their hardest to please the other artists, who are living with him in Ibiza for over a week already so they probably are almost friends already.
It also forces them to get out of their confort zone sometimes, because a song might be in an style they do not usually perform (like Floor singing Shallow in an almost Bossa Nova tone)
They also want to nail the song, because they became friends and they do not want to ruin the song that is SO IMPORTANT to their friends...
First episode of the Season had Henk Poort as artist of the day... and Floor was the first one. Nobody knew Nightwish very well or what Floor could do, and she comes and sing a german aria (in german), Vilja Lied, with rock background, to Henk, as that was a song his mother (who apparently was an aria singer) to his dad who would get tears in his eyes. Floor floored everyone.

A couple of things to note here. First, the composition. This is actually the arrangement of the song, as arranged by Nightwish. this appeared on their 2002 album "Century Child", so they are performing the Nightwish arrangement of the song.
Second, Henk. As already mentioned, Henk Poort played Erik in the Dutch production of Phantom of the Opera, and is Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite phantom. IIRC, his exact words are that Henk is "THE PHANTOM". So Henk knows this song like the back of his hand.
Third. Henk is Floor's idol. So she was completely fangirling when she found out they were going to be on this show together. She asked if she could perform Phantom of the Opera with Henk. Henk agreed, with the condition that he would get to sing this with Nightwish when they tour through the UK. Those shows are still scheduled to happen.

This arrange is from the Nightwish cover. There's a live version of this song with NW first singer Tarja which is very good.
Dear Tina, I am not sure why you were not told that it is a duet with Henk Poort on the Dutch show Beste Zangers. Henk either was or still is Erik in the Dutch version of Phantom. And there are 2 variations possible of this song, the classical and this version.
There's also the "pure" Nightwish rendition of the song. The Beste Zangers version is in between Nightwish's and the classic version. Although Henk is phenomenal, there's no chance that he could perform in the way Marco does/did.

Don’t worry about copyright issues at Nightwish reactions
there Label „Nuclear Record’s“ don’t claim any of the Nightwish reactions especially the Live videos from the there own UA-cam channel.
The only sometimes „problematic“ NW live video with copyright issues is „the poet and the Pendulum“ because of a german rapper who have sampled the first 1minute of the song (a choirboy singing the intro) and his german major record label claim sometimes reaction videos of the original song even they are not the real copyright owner
And Nightwish song "Sahara". Again that same rapper...
Haha, Tina. Subscriber here, but just a comment on your intro. You can skip through any other singer/band's videos, but there are literally thousands of thumbs-downs on vocal coach, reactors and analyzer's videos of Nightwish songs because of the mistake of cutting them. The extra several minutes your video will run will be well worth the hundreds of thumb's up you will gain. ;-) Also, while they do a really good job on Phantom, Floor's version of Shallow (on this same show) was exquisite. It is one of the best covers you'll ever listen to, up there with Sound of Silence by Disturbed and Zombie by Bad Wolves. It would be well worth a reaction!

There is some critical info that you were missing with the "husky rock voice" analogy: Floor too was a vocal coach... she can get to a full "operatic voice" with the greatest of ease... type into a UA-cam search : "Floor Jansen, Puccini O mio babbino Caro" ... (you're welcome)
The role of the Phantom was written with Henk in mind. Henk is the phantom of the opera which is why people want to perform phantom songs with him.

They are not singing to a backing track. It was a live band backing them.

Floor has a following and yes we are quite critical . I have seen many reactions before your first nightwish reaction and i fully trust in what you do . I also am a fan of your lovely fresh voice. My question for a professional vocal coach here would be: in Beste Zangers, Floor does a great job of what in the industry you call "belting" in "Que Se Siente". Would you rate this performance as above average, and how hard is it to get to this level of breath control?
Also, as an amateur, I was actually most impressed with her vocals on the recently released solo effort for the charity WarChild: "De Beelden Blijven". Very, very soft vocals here, contrasting with the belting on "Que Se Siente". So could you comment/compare/contrast the 3 techniques: opera (Phantom, above); belting ("Que"); and softness/whispering ("Beelden Blijven")?
Great question Ted. This performance would be considered "above average" as you state as it requires a great amount of time and rehearsal to reach this level of vocal expertise. The voice is a muscle and like any muscle, gradually needs to be trained correctly to increase flexibility, agility, stamina and range.
Floor idolized Henk from when she was small. He also played the part of the Phantom on stage for many years. He went to a growl during his performance for Floors benefit as it is not his usual style. You should definitely react to the Nightwish Helsinki 2005 version of Phantom of the Opera for comparison. It is wild to say the least, especially Marko the bassist on vocals. I believe Floor and Henk's version was based on that Nightwish version. Henk maybe a little out of his comfort zone in this one, not beeing a rock singer.

Since you loved this performance and the instrumentation of the phantom you should ofc. check out Nightwish (floors band) with their old singer Tarja Turunen do the phantom.... according to me the best phantom ever done and I have listened to a bunch of them
