Phantom was the last performance of Beste Zangers 2019 season. The first song of BZ 2019 season was Floor's tribute to Henk "Vilja Lied". When VL was performed the other show participants had no idea who Floor was.
Yes, that was a D6 and she held that for exactly 8 seconds... comfortably. Her highest known note sung live is an F6 and she did it like it was nobody's business..... while smiling the whole time.... and held it for a respectable amount of time too. She never sang higher than D6. The glissando in "Romanticide" wasn't higher than this. That's also the reason why this cover is two semitones lower than the original key. ;)

Unfortunately for me, I kept a rumor of the F6 going because I heard it from someone before I actually compared the 2. lol The note she hit on Romanticide was a D#6, and I made sure to listen to the version uploaded by Nuclear Blast Records, needless to say I have the DVD as well. I have 2 phones and played both notes simultaneously, one on each ear and there is a difference, my friend. Sorry to correct you, but Romanticide IS higher. 😊❤🤘🤘
A couple of things I found out from other commenters in other reactions to this very song.... apparently Floor is a HUGE fan of Henk Poort. She saw him in Phantom as a kid and fell in love with him. He has been her idol growing up and still is. So her getting to sing with him was a dream come true. Also she taught Henk how to growl here for this!
No, Henk learned to add grit to his voice so he could use it in Sound of Silence when he sang it for Floor. Floor had nothing to do with teaching Henk to growl. If someone else told you she did, they were incorrect.

( Freja ) Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). [6] Re-singing style ranges from opera to screams and grunts. She usually sings in English, in addition she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish. Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. When you watch this, one of the things that some audience members catch, and then are initially perplexed by, is that when you look past the singers to the WATER beside their platform, you can see that it appears to be RAINING in the studio. And the answer (as many commenters will write in to you, I'm sure), is that yes, in fact, when they filmed this it was raining outside, and the roof leaked, and was dripping water onto the stage area while Floor and Henk were singing. But they had already rehearsed for the show, and the other performers had already sung, so there was no way to re-schedule, and so they kept shooting. How would you like to have to sing under those conditions Aileen?? Keep well ! ... T.C.

This performance probably made Floor a household name in her home country! And to think she sang this song with one of her heros, yet she still managed to just NAIL this song.
One of my favourite things when I watched this show was watching Rolf (young man in the black shirt at 1:31) look at Floor with such awe every time she sang. Dude looks like he's having a religious experience every episode. He looks at her like she hung the damn moon.

As said before all the songs by Floor in this show were brilliant but can I point you towards the first song of the show that she sang for Henk Poort. Only one of the other singers had heard of her and I am sure that when the heard she was going to sing the Aria Vilja Lied from the opera the Merry Widow in the original German they were somewhat doubtful. The shock and surprise on their faces during the song is a wonder to behold. So Vilja Lied from Beste Zangers and also for a complete surprise Shallow from the same show. Enjoy
I also like how Henk's body language and facial expressions change during the song. He's such a professional and has done this so often that he just can't help getting into character! And that last "sing for me!" at 4:34 is so powerful that Floor's microphone also picks it up, giving a slight echo effect. Two amazing singers with lots of mutual admiration, just singing their hearts out and we get to enjoy the spectacle. Happy days.
I felt so nervous for the small intimate audience at first, but as the performance crescendo'd into the climax, the stakes turned and mounted higher and higher on Floor. It was really amazing and I got totally overwhelmed with relief and joy to see her pull it off! It must have been so intense to witness up close like they did haha. Floor admired Henk as opera singer since she was a little girl. (Both Dutch) Henk really admires Floor for her unique and versatile voice. These people really love and admire each other deeply. it is beautiful to watch. Btw, Henk lived in Italy and was impressed by a man singing in a bar. That man was...Andrea Bocelli and his carrier went crazy after Henk introduced him in the opera world.

There were some other great duets from this show, such as Henk with EmmaHeesters singing Vivo per lei, Emma singing “Pa olvidarte” with Rolf Sanchez, and from a different season, Tommie Christiaan and Tania Kross singing “Barcelona”. Especially that last one was very impressive!

Another great reaction! Yes, she went there :) One note, already there are the inevitable "Tarja is better/Floor is better" comments. I don't feel like I need to have one singer be better than the other to appreciate the uniqueness of both so I like this version and I like Nightwish's take on it, with Tarja and Marko singing. I would recommend checking out the Tarja and Marko version because it's pure drama, not just how they approach it, but because it was the last night of their tour and the last performance of Tarja with the band - she didn't know it, but the boys did. Compared to all other phantom performances that performance is real magic....a new standard. Can't be done more exciting than by them and that fantastic band.
This performance is rather serendipitous. See, Nightwish not only played this live in 2005 at the End of an Era show, but covered this song on their 2002 album "Century Child". the arrangement they are using on Beste Zangers is actually the Nightwish arrangement of the song as it appears on the album. So you have the current singer of Nightwish, performing the Nightwish arrangement of the song, with the person who actually played the Phantom in the Dutch production of the musical, who happens to be her idol. Also, Floor asked him to perform this with her (her idol), in which he agreed only on the condition that he gets to perform this with Nightwish when they tour through the Netherlands... That show is still scheduled.
Great review; interesting to hear that you had some familiarity with Henk Poort. In watching many reactions to this song, not many reviewers had heard of him. I believe you are on the right track with the solo performances of Floor that you hinted at. One thing I must say about singing is that some people (like me) really like full-blast "belting" vocals, and some people do not. I really enjoy Floor's rendition of "Adagio", because that is a major sonic blast from Floor. Depending on your tastes though! Floor participated in this dutch show which showcases all established singers. She was an unknown in het homecountry though because her genre isnt popular in the netherlands. Only henk and one other singer knew of her. In the first episode of the season they sing songs for henk poort. She sings vilja lied for henk because his mother used to sing that for his father. You need to watch that because hardly anyone knows what she can do at that point and she has the opening act for the season. Bar was put high that season.

beste zangers is a show to watch: this is truly a highlight in a soup of talent.. this performance though (in my mind) solidifies her as a Valkyre Queen: +6' of pure talent.. Chameleonic talent (rasp, opera, belt, clean, vibrato.. name it and she can do it.. and Nightwish is a perfect vessel for it.. ). here though, Henk and Floor challenge each other and both rise to it: such a jewel, and treat, to behold.
Did you notice the Nightwish flavour she did put over the arrangement? Also she learned Henk in the hours before the performance how sing with a growling voice ( and you can see how pleased she was when it came out so well)

Shockingly this is not even the best duet from this episode! A slight nod goes to Henk & Emma "Vivo por Lei" which is jaw droppingly brilliant and more sincerely emotive. Floor and Tim take bronze with the "Shallow" duet they did also on the same show.

One of my favourite things when I watched this show was watching Rolf (young man in the black shirt at 1:31) look at Floor with such awe every time she sang. Dude looks like he's having a religious experience every episode. He looks at her like she hung the damn moon.

As said before all the songs by Floor in this show were brilliant but can I point you towards the first song of the show that she sang for Henk Poort. Only one of the other singers had heard of her and I am sure that when the heard she was going to sing the Aria Vilja Lied from the opera the Merry Widow in the original German they were somewhat doubtful. The shock and surprise on their faces during the song is a wonder to behold. So Vilja Lied from Beste Zangers and also for a complete surprise Shallow from the same show. Enjoy

I also like how Henk's body language and facial expressions change during the song. He's such a professional and has done this so often that he just can't help getting into character! And that last "sing for me!" at 4:34 is so powerful that Floor's microphone also picks it up, giving a slight echo effect. Two amazing singers with lots of mutual admiration, just singing their hearts out and we get to enjoy the spectacle. Happy days.
I felt so nervous for the small intimate audience at first, but as the performance crescendo'd into the climax, the stakes turned and mounted higher and higher on Floor. It was really amazing and I got totally overwhelmed with relief and joy to see her pull it off! It must have been so intense to witness up close like they did haha. This was a such a special little gem! Thanks for sharing!

Floor admired Henk as opera singer since she was a little girl. (Both Dutch) Henk really admires Floor for her unique and versatile voice. These people really love and admire each other deeply. it is beautiful to watch. Btw, Henk lived in Italy and was impressed by a man singing in a bar. That man was...Andrea Bocelli and his carrier went crazy after Henk introduced him in the opera world.

Another great reaction! Yes, she went there :) One note, already there are the inevitable "Tarja is better/Floor is better" comments. I don't feel like I need to have one singer be better than the other to appreciate the uniqueness of both so I like this version and I like Nightwish's take on it, with Tarja and Marko singing. I would recommend checking out the Tarja and Marko version because it's pure drama, not just how they approach it, but because it was the last night of their tour and the last performance of Tarja with the band - she didn't know it, but the boys did. Compared to all other phantom performances that performance is real magic....a new standard. Can't be done more exciting than by them and that fantastic band.
This performance is rather serendipitous. See, Nightwish not only played this live in 2005 at the End of an Era show, but covered this song on their 2002 album "Century Child". the arrangement they are using on Beste Zangers is actually the Nightwish arrangement of the song as it appears on the album. So you have the current singer of Nightwish, performing the Nightwish arrangement of the song, with the person who actually played the Phantom in the Dutch production of the musical, who happens to be her idol. Also, Floor asked him to perform this with her (her idol), in which he agreed only on the condition that he gets to perform this with Nightwish when they tour through the Netherlands... That show is still scheduled.

Great review; interesting to hear that you had some familiarity with Henk Poort. In watching many reactions to this song, not many reviewers had heard of him. I believe you are on the right track with the solo performances of Floor that you hinted at. One thing I must say about singing is that some people (like me) really like full-blast "belting" vocals, and some people do not. I really enjoy Floor's rendition of "Adagio", because that is a major sonic blast from Floor. Depending on your tastes though! Floor participated in this dutch show which showcases all established singers. She was an unknown in het homecountry though because her genre isnt popular in the netherlands. Only henk and one other singer knew of her. In the first episode of the season they sing songs for henk poort. She sings vilja lied for henk because his mother used to sing that for his father. You need to watch that because hardly anyone knows what she can do at that point and she has the opening act for the season. Bar was put high that season.

beste zangers is a show to watch: this is truly a highlight in a soup of talent.. this performance though (in my mind) solidifies her as a Valkyre Queen: +6' of pure talent.. Chameleonic talent (rasp, opera, belt, clean, vibrato.. name it and she can do it.. and Nightwish is a perfect vessel for it.. ). here though, Henk and Floor challenge each other and both rise to it: such a jewel, and treat, to behold.

No, no, no. Floor did not teach Henk to add grit. He learned how beforehand so he could use it on Sound of Silence when he sang it for Floor. So much misinformation being thrown around.
