In case people don't know drivers are paid by the mile, and dispatchers will starve drivers into submission. I drove over the road for 20+ years, I know first hand.

Interestingly, during WW2, the mill had to import black employees because the previous workers had been drafted. There is still a large black population there in the middle of Siskiyou County, which is as rural as California gets.
I love watching $100,000 brand new 4x4s unable to move as me and my old 74 Dodge rolls right on by. $100 a month and that includes insurance and maintenance.

Our snow is different and we measure it in feet. I’ve pulled out numerous midwesterners and east coasters who thought they could drive through these storms.
I actually live in Weed, the snow here is a very wet slushy kind of snow, with gusts of 75+ mph. People live here and don't own 4x4 vehicles because they think they don't need them, the ones that do own 4x4s put the cheapest tires they can and think they'll be ok. So yeah it isn't bad for the people that actually can drive in the snow and own vehicles capable of doing well in this kind of weather, it's the people that can't drive and don't own these types of vehicles then go out anyways.

Just for those unfamiliar with the extent of California and the weather possibilities; that sign at about 8 seconds into the video that say "Exit 745" is 745 miles from the Mexican border. Or 1,200KM for most of the world.
Had to over night across the street from the truck stop about 2001 because of conditions like what's shown. Was dispatched to Weed to pick up a load of treated lumber and ended up treated to a snow storm. Avoided the truck stop parking because I knew it would end up a schit show filled with dumb drivers. I wasn't wrong.but it provided an entertaining show viewed from across the street.
Kitty Litter is the only tool to get your vehicle off the ice or icy snow. Spinning one's wheels does mostly nothing. Stay at home. Truckers are stuck unfortunately.
Why are so many of you harping on truckers? A lot of employers are heartless and expect you to work regardless of weather, or if you are sick....and if you don't, they fire you.
@@Knightrem True, except that the FMCSA makes retaliation against a driver under these circumstances unlawful. Both the driver and US DOT can pursue damages in a civil action for firing a driver under these circumstances. Most carriers won’t risk it. Some will, of course.
I had a job for 15 years along the Dalton Highway where I drove on icy and snowy roads all the time. I also drove in the pipeline row. If the frame wasn’t bottoming out I was moving. Even our personal 1/2 ton crewcab has a tote in front of the bed with 400 pounds of sand. It also has studded tires. We drive out of our driveway with more snow than many of these people are stuck in. We had 18” of snow over three weeks ago.

Looks brutal ..I was heading north right through that ..but ..shut down just south of Redding for the night ..I got back on the road around 1100 hours the next day ..and drove straight thru ..a couple of minor delays endured ..it ..looking at these conditions ..shutting down the 5 for the night was the right call ..hope everyone was ok ..keep on truckin boys!

It's really beautiful out here I haven't seen snow like this in ages I was a planning on being in this but I'm a truck driver and I-5 was closed I spent most of the day bypassing that going all the way through 140 and ended up in lake Klamath sitting down 97 and got dark got chains on and it's a nice quiet ride when you're on a good pack snow I'm just trying to get back to get this load done been out here for a week and a half trailer leaked water and they had to get it fixed and blah blah blah and now that i-5's closed so I go all the way the other side to sneak around that and now she asks his clothes through there so what are you going to do Read about her way saying how bad it is worst thing about cold weather is everybody complaining about when they got a coat

i live in hawaii mainly because i don't like dealing with the cold and the snow or worse the ice storms. however we in hawaii depend on these long haul truckers as much as any where else in usa and so i say thank you drivers for all that you have to deal with to keep us all supplied with the necessities of life. like the saying goes .... life is a beach and then you surf.

I-5 goes over a pretty high mountain pass just north of Weed. Minnesota doesn't have those.

The ones that do, already knew Caltrans was going to close the 5 at fawndale so they didn’t leave Redding.
This far north of California, down through the Shasta area, does get snowstorms usually a few times a year though. My family is from Dunsmuir.

i live in hawaii mainly because i don't like dealing with the cold and the snow or worse the ice storms. however we in hawaii depend on these long haul truckers as much as any where else in usa and so i say thank you drivers for all that you have to deal with to keep us all supplied with the necessities of life. like the saying goes .... life is a beach and then you surf.
Maybe no snow or cold for Hawaii, but how about those hurricanes! I moved back to No. Cali and would rather risk the fires, earthquakes, and snow any day than go through another hurricane.
