Well now, that’s your no answer.
I think it’s because he was cutting the base further in and flaring the top out more so he needed less depth on the top two. Maybe he saved the top cut offs for a future project as he could this way. 🤷🏻‍♂️ My guesses for what it’s worth. Your question intrigued me.

If you look at the pile of pieces, the hearts and clubs were cut from thicker pieces of wood than the spades and diamonds.
