These were the scenes in Alton, Illinois just north of St. Louis. Cars slide and bounce against the curb. A UPS truck slides. A SUV gets stuck along a curb and is pulled out by a truck. People walk and slide on the streets. Copyright Dan Robinson.

    UPS truck handled that like a boss. The common mistake most of these people are making is locking up their wheels. Once the wheels stop spinning, you have no directional control best thing to do is NOT put the brakes on and shift to low gear to use engine breaking.

      The UPS driver definitely knew how to drive on the ice. Just steer and don't worry about stopping (it ain't going to happen). Unlike everyone else who just cranks the steering wheel against the lock and pushes the brake pedal to the floor

    an interesting pattern to note is how in midatlantic to central and southern parts of the US, they get much more freezing rain than snow because their daily average temps in the winter months tend to hover more or less around freezing, while in upstate ny for example, they are more likely to get straight snow with temperatures not allowing for constant freeze and thaw, ie making it safer in theory.

      In case of freezing rain like in the video it won't help much. All you can do is drive slow and don't slam the brakes, prevent lockup, don't get into understeer. Where I live (Poland) we usually dont have freezing rains, since 6 years I drive only BMW rear wheel drive cars, had lots of fun in the winter. Dont think you really need 4x4 unless you live in the mountains.

    These parts of the USA get hit with snow and ice every year. Yet many if not most of these people are driving small cars with no 4x4, and non snow tires. After all these years, it hasn't occured to them to get proper tires or a vehicle better suited for the weather?

    • @VintageCars999
      @VintageCars999 7 років тому

      Well that's only part of the issue. Getting a 4x4 and snow tires will only aid, but i definitely agree, i drive a car that can do well in snow but not in deep snow because the car is too low to the ground. (no it's not lowered, it's designed that way).

    Shouldn't ABS kick in when they are sliding like that? and how about Traction Control to start moving? Or is it that these cars are old and don't have those systems?
    I'm really asking, I want to know more about the subject

      I think ABS only kicks in when the brake is smashed really hard[high pressure]. It may also have to do with the speed the car was moving when the operator had slammed the pedal. But with the low traction & speed, barely hitting the brake will lockup your wheels. Since the brake pressure is low and the wheels lock up, the ABS thinks the car is just at a stop which is why it doesn't kick in. I think what ABS does is keeps all your wheels in sync if I remember correctly. So if you hit the brake, it makes sure all of the wheels keep moving, equal brake pressure. On older vehicles, you would have problems with one wheel on each axle locking up caddy corner, and the other two spinning freely, allowing you to slide. I could be wrong, good question.

      These cars had ABS, mostly. In this situation, ABS would keep you from stopping.

      FCFordLord The wheels would keep turning though. These guys were locked up.

      Some cars may not have the ABS functional, i've also driven in cars where the wheels lock up regardless of ABS, if you are hitting the brake too hard, the caliper won't retract because of too much pressure in the system.

      Some of these vehicles only have ABS on the rear wheels, which wasn't unusual on '90s vehicles. Notice the ones where the front wheels lock up while the rear wheels still rotate freely. In any case, ABS won't help if you lose traction altogether.

    As a car guy, I hate salt trucks.
    As a guy with common sense, surrounded by ignorant people who are itching to sue someone else because they are without common sense, I hate salt trucks.

    Put car in reverse and floor. I do it all the time...tires are not moving when sliding..won't hurt transmission.
