Back in 1965, I bought two used 'firebirds' (III) for $200 each, Ray Lantz Music, Jackson, Michigan...My first bass was a Thunderbird IV...These just didn't sell too well back then...
Damnit Doc! I wasn’t born back then but I am from Michigan! Now I have a personal problem with you for stealing 2 Firebirds! 😂 Sounds like you scored some serious deals man!! It’s insane how affordable guitars seem compared to how expensive they are today.
Value of $200 from 1965 to 2022 $200 in 1965 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $1,884.50 today, an increase of $1,684.50 over 57 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 4.01% per year between 1965 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 842.25%.
I got a new guitar today from my dad, it’s a used Dean VX. Brand new it’s $299, but my dad bought it used for $340. I really dig it, it sounds good and it’s awesome.
Firebird pickups don’t have slug pole pieces, but steel alloy rails in the bobbins, and at least one of those rails is the magnet. That’s why the covers are solid, it’s not built like a PAF or the other mini-humbuckers with the magnet underneath the coils, so there’s more room for coil windings. Yeah, that “hot” reading might be right. If you can find one with all the epoxy removed, Thunderbird pickups (usually) are the same way (not like the Les Paul DC Junior bass humbucker), so those MOD collection guitars with those should not have issues with 4 pole pieces for 6 strings.)
It sounds killer I still can't get over the fact that the Firebird PU's are so killer but never get used in other guitars. I think it is 99% of most guys think it is a mini hummy without pole pieces. It is not even made the same. A HB has one large magnet across the the base plate. A Firebird has twin blade magnets. One inside of each coil.

More than just a Halloween special, this is your Theme guitar, Trog! Even though the Firebird and Thunderbird line have not really called out to me yet per se, I still think I would like having the triple-pickup non-reverse edition of the Firebird. I would have it fitted with all the controllers from an earlier SG model that you unboxed, plus push-pull switching to turn the volume controls into phase canellcers.
It's interesting that the aesthetic that people ascribe to Lovecraft is so similar to angels as written in the Bible. On a metatextual level I guess both have their origins in altered states of consciousness, either by way of psychoactive substances or dissociative episodes brought on by dreams, illness, or forms of poisoning due to less sanitary conditions around food (not claiming Lovecraft indulged in psychoactive substances but he was present at a time when chemist shops were basically unregulated and you could buy pretty much anything without the need for a prescription and would have been influenced by writers who did, which almost certainly includes the people who were involved in production of the source material from which the modern new testament was derived (which itself went through centuries of aural tradition and multiple translations, as well as edits to suit the desires of various generations of heads of state and can't reasonably be considered an entirely factual account, especially in light of the fact that historians up until the introduction of more recent academic standards prioritised the framing of events to suit a narrative over factual research. I liked my Epiphone Thunderbird IV Pro a lot, but unfortunately it was just a bit too chunky for me after my carpel tunnel worsened, and I ended up trading it in for a Schecter. I really like the Schecter, it's probably one of the most comfortable basses I've ever played, but I definitely miss the Thunderbird. It was a really solid instrument, it just hurt too much to play. I wanted to get a firebird as well, but then I realized how impossible it would be to get a proper three pickup firebird in the finish I wanted, so I ended up with a Hagstrom Fantomen instead, which is quite different, but I probably like it more than I would have liked a thunderbird.
