*Does this tank smell bad?*
No. b/c it’s an established tank and the plants are all doing well, it doesn’t smell at all. My friends who aren’t into fish agree.
However, in the beginning, before all of the plants were established, it did have a very faint fresh soil smell that you can only smell if you put your nose right next to it.

A: I made it. You can see it in the “2months update” video.
*Why is water so clean and how do you clean this tank?*
B/c I’m using the plants as filter, they are doing most of the work. The glass hardly gets dirty. It does get dirty maybe once a month or every month and a half. Then I use a magnetic algae scrubber. I showed this in the “setting up” video, and the link is in the description.
Things I do to maintain this tank is: I feed it once a day. I do around 5~10% water changes once in a while to get rid of surface bio-film. And usually 25% water change once a week or once every 10 days. And trim the plants when they get too bushy. I never vacuum the substrate.

Thrilla from Manila it really is a great hobby! It’s so fun to just look next to you while you’re doing homework or your bored and see shrimp/crayfish swimming around happy. Just make sure you get only one gender of crayfish, if they make shrimplets you need a bigger tank and it’s a lot of work.

This reminds me of when I was 13 years old. My da bought me a fish tank for my birthday. That same day I went down by the local river with my net. I remember catching a few different species, but there was one in particular that I'll never forget. It was the size of a thumbnail and it's body was quite slender and long like that of an eel. Anyway, they all found a new home in my fish tank. A few days later I went on vacation for a week and had a friend feed them while I was gone. I remember returning home from the vacation only to be greeted by the smell of rot and decay, I'll never forget the stench. The front door was also slightly open. I walked slowly into the living room, nervously scanning my surroundings. To my horror I saw my friend lying motionless on the floor, blood leaking out from the side of his head. I put both of my hands to my mouth, fighting the urge to scream and vomit. Suddenly, I saw movement in the corner if my eye, near the television. It was the eel I had previously caught in the river. It had somehow grown to 14 feet and sprouted limbs. It was also wearing a tophat and monocle and smoking a pipe. Well, it was at that moment I realized it was not the eel at all. In fact, it was the lough ness monster, who beat my friend to death because he wouldn't give him three fiddy for some pipe tobacco.

The complex care and attention you give your tank is just lovely to watch. I learned more about the complex aspects of keeping an aquarium sometime in high school, and while it’s not a hobby I myself enjoy, it makes me wonder how in the world fish are often seen as a first-time pet. I find the aspects of caring for a dog much easier than the complex ecosystem of an aquarium.
