Next year, it will be 30 years since I first played Mortal Kombat 3. The Sega Genesis version was the first one I got. The leap in quality of this Sculptured Software version is enormous, compared to all those made by Probe for the Sega Genesis. Congratulations on the channel and hugs from Brazil!

And you still remember that… that’s what I love about these games, I still have a lot of good memories associated with them back in the 90’s it’s always cool to revisit those good memories.. thanks for the comment Jon 👊🏼
@@kmlumd44 jealous because you spent your youth analyzing and interpreting snooze fest 20th century literature, and doing math formulas that had no real world value
I always thought it was cool how the bell tolls three times when the MK3 logo displays when you start the game. No other port does this, not even the arcade. Nice touch I think.
Sheeva’s 7-hit combo was so great! Hp, Hp, Lp, Hk, Hk, Lk, back Hk 😎. Man I LOVED MK3 on the MD2. It was so responsive and addictive. The 6-button pad was just perfect for this and UMK3. Also I wasn’t aware of that Kabal exploit, nice! Awesome video 👍🏻
I remember my dad buying me the game on the Genesis. The only stipulation was my mom couldn’t find out that I got it lol. Needless to say, 10/11 year old me would sneak down to the basement late at night when my parents were sleeping to play. 😂
lol Same. MK2 was the first game I ever got for my genesis, and I loved it. Of course when I played the snes version at a friend's house, l couldn't even LOOK at the Sega version again 😡 lol Despite that I still told my dad I wanted mk3, but l wasn't expecting much after how mk2 turned out. Boy was I wrong. I nearly cried when I saw how close to the arcade this version actually was 😊
Haha yeah except I did it the other way round and got up early in the morning before my parents for my MK 1/2/3 fix. When I had the lounge TV all to myself 😆
Wow lol it sounds like a bunch of us had to sneak around to play these games! I was in the same boat for MK2 but my Dad ended up liking it and after finding that out it was smooth sailing from then on when it came to Mortal Kombat lol thanks for the comment 👊🏼
I still had the original mega drive with the headphone jack. Mortal Kombat games in the middle of the night while my parents were asleep was prime using headphones from my Sony Walkman. The headphone jack on my mega drive was the ultimate reason to not get the smaller mid gen refresh Genesis. Got most of all my gaming done in the middle of the night especially MK 😅👌🏽👌🏽💯
I hear that.. I think if I was introduced to MK3 like I was MK2 I would’ve liked it more back in the day. I only saw Vanilla MK3 a couple times in the arcade, and before I knew it 6 months later UMK3 was out, and at the time I wasn’t much of a fan of that version so I dismissed the 3’s for the most part and kept going back to Vanilla. But I’m really enjoying it more so now, and find myself wanting to play it more! Thanks for the comment Meow 😸
Oh man take bring back memories I remember playing this for Sega Genesis and I play it when I was little mortal Kombat for Sega Genesis long time ago Darryl you rock like always 😄😄
I love this version a lot. It's a lot better than the arcade because the controls are a lot better. You can pull off finishers in this one really easily.
It should of happened. It would have been close to the Dos version I think minus the arcade music but genesis music, less colors, and less sound effects.
Mortal Kombat used to play better on the Genesis compared to the SNES, the audio was better on the SNES but the animation and frame rate was better on the Genesis. My favorite stage was the clock tower, I always used to do the stage fatality.
I remember watching my older brother’s playing this alongside the first Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis,I also remember when they input the cheat codes to unlock Motoro and Shao Kahn as playable characters!
I had this game on genesis but this was also when PS1 came out… I remember being SO jealous of my friend who had PS1 and this game, it looked much better on PS1 than genesis. It was almost identical to the arcade graphics, whereas genesis was noticeably inferior
If you look at MK1 or MK2 on Genesis, then look at MK3 on Genesis. It's clear that by that time, the developers had figured out how to push the 16 bit Sega console to its limits and squeeze as much out of it as possible. The number of frames of animation, the number on-screen colours, the number of different sound effects are all are much improved for this port.
They changed the studio. MK and MKII ports were developed by Probe and MK3 and Ultimate was Sculptured Software. Probe team was so lazy that they managed to ruin even the Saturn and Playstation MKII ports.
I remember one of the biggest differences between the Genesis and SNES versions of this game was that Shao Kahn was much harder on the SNES than he was on the Genesis.
I hear that. Thanks to modern tech the fan made version of MK2 Unlimited is the best version to play as far as I’m concerned. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
I own this version for a very long time. I’m thinking since 97 something like that. And I agree that the graphics are really good and the gameplay is fine, it took me a very long time to get used to the dial combos. Mortal Kombat 2 is still my favourite one
I remember the first time I played this version of mk3 was on the Sega Channel. It was available early on there in the test drive section. You could only pick 4 characters though, Sonya, Kano, Kung Lao and Sindel. Great videos.
Man Playing this version of mortal Kombat 3 for Sega Genesis back in the day me and my friend Chris used play this game alot I used to call motaro baby motaro cuz motaro is so small in this game 😅
I would always choose shiva back in the day because it was the closest thing that I could be to play as Goro, if that makes sense. However, I was disappointed with her because I wished they were more creative on how she could use all 4 of her arms just like Goro did.
The 16 bit generation really benefited from greater development tools and larger cart sizes as time went on. Western games in particular seemed to finally improve by 95. Sega really didnt need a Sega CD or 32X - they just needed to keep pumping out MD games until the Saturn could stand on its own.
I remember me as a kid and my older brother would rent this version all the time back when it came out. I still remember the ad board for the game at the video store and the cute young asian lady working there. Eventually we bought the SNES version after my grades were good as a reward lol
As a kid I was a Genesis owner while all of my friends had a Super Nintendo. I was always so jealous of the speech samples in their MK games which my Genesis versions were missing. To me this one always felt like the one where "they" got it right! Obviously the sound quality was inferior to the SNES, but I was so excited that they were just there in the Genesis version finally😅! Very special version to me!!! Also the version I played the most with my buddy, Andrew, before he moved away :/
Is funny how MK3 on Sega Genesis has the option to enable the bosses (either Motaro or Khan in UMK3) but you only can use them on 1v1 vs mode, and if you decide to let the continue timer ran out of the loser while the winner has a boss, the game just straight up pretend you're on single player and gives you a Game Over, the Galaga Mini-game in Sega Genesis modifies the rules, the 1st one is that you have either 3 to 7 shared lives instead of 3 lives per-player (for the extra lives you need to hold some buttons before the mini-game starts, if you hear the sfx of a proyectile WITHOUT firing the proyectile means the code worked... sometimes... yeah, there's a chance that EVEN if you activate the code, it won't give you the extra lives), also like in the arcade once you lose the last live you get kicked out, unique to Sega Genesis is that you can play up to 3 waves (or rounds) of enemies and you find unique enemy sprites here and there, and you can see the results screen by holding the proyectile button once you destroy the last enemy or lose the last live, showing you the enemies destroyed, accuracy and that stuff, also... MK3 Sega Genesis (including Ultimate) has a 2nd mini-game that was taken (and slighty modified) from MK2 arcade, and if you want to play it you need a 2nd controller because it's exclusive to the vs mode Kombat Kodes (tiny edit here: in one hack of UMK3 to add the vanilla arcade pictures and a few of the UMK3 that got added on 32-bit Trilogy, they added a treasure that allows you to play this mini-game without the kombat kode, along with one particular "reward?" that straight up skips the credits with a unique Game Over message with the Babality fanfare), funny enough, the in-game message when a round starts says that the game will give you a teaser of the upcoming MK4 game (make sure you don't end the round if you are actually fighting), only to "troll" you with the modified version of the Pong mini-game.
This is a much better conversion than I knew about. I didnt get this game in the 1990s but I had the Saturn version of UMK 3. I like that they kept more of the speech. In the Megadrive (as the Genesis was called in UK/Ireland) version of MK1 and MK2, the speech was largely absent.
The Saturn version is one I’ve just came across recently and I’m gonna showcase it in a video soon. And yeah they really knocked this version for Genesis outta the park! So good. Thanks for the comment Mango 👊🏼
Awesome as always. This takes me way back, I loved playing this on my Genesis. Can I suggest a playthrough on UMK3 Ultimate Cup Edition? It's an awesome hack rom, similar to UMK3+ but with stages from MK1 and 2 (thus being the closest thing to an Arcade version of MK Trilogy we'll ever have)
MK3 I played on the SNES and Genesis I preferred the SNES version because I liked the controller more with the shoulder bumpers, had better sound and looked a little better than the genesis port. Still they both played really well.
Parents bought this for me. Then when the cartridge started having blue screen crashes, father took me to two different Funcolands to get a replacement.
Do you have any old school MK art, instruction manuals, comics, or old video game mags (Gamepro, EGM) that have MK reviews inside that you could show in a video?
I bought 1-3 from FuncoLand, then got UMK3 from a store when it released. Eventually someone stole my copy of 3. To make UMK3, I felt the developers removed some frames of animation as well as lowered resolution on all sprites from MK3 to be able to fit everything they were able to. The screen shake was out of control in UMK3, partly to hide the choppier animation.
If at all possible, could you play through MKGold on Dreamcast as Sektor. And if that is possible, fire a homing missile before doing his flamethrower fatality. It’s hilarious.
