The Saturn is a powerhouse for fighting games and shmup shooters. Combined with the 4MB cart. It was an entire generation ahead of its peers in terms of power. The Japanese library is Godlike as well.
I've got Daytona USA on Xbox series x , it's arcade perfect, i play it once in a while when i want to feel a bit better, the music really cheers you up.
The Saturn natively outputs RGB, so a simple Saturn to hdmi converter gives excellent picture on a modern display. They are like $30 from hyperkin or pound.
At one point I had four Saturns around 1998 because I adored the machine. Enjoyed the PS1 and it was a great time but then got an N64 at launch and moved on from PS1. I grew to love Daytona, Panzer II, Radiant Silvergun, Nights and Sega Rally. A small list of games perhaps but I just adored these games and played them over. I think Saturn games hold up well compared to Ps1 despite how it doesn't quite measure up in raw polygon performance It's certainly a wonderful machine that a lot of people didn't realise at the time
Okay then. I'll help educate you on the subject from a PS1 owner that entire gen so I've got no bias in this just simple hard facts. First off lets not confuse "3D polygon calculations" ( PS1 is more efficient on average, also N64 ) with "3D graphics overall" and effects, different story. The best image quality overall= Saturn, N64 2nd and PS1 3rd. Why, how? Saturn does forward texture mapping rendering on polygons which approximates a poly scene, heavily reducing warping and no poly seams visible, PS1 does affine texture mapping rendering and cannot calculate or approximate poly data in scene which greatly ruins the stability of 3D poly textures in motion warping along with terrible alignment issues and seams being visible between polys, the N64 has the most stable and smooth 3D at the expense of extremely low res textures but it avoids the dithering on PS1. Saturn has the highest screen res of the three ( Virtua fighter 2 ingame, Radient silvergun main menu high res ). End result= Saturn can do perspective correct textures ( VDP2 ) that are higher res than both PS1 and N64 and although the VDP1 polys are not quite as clean as N64 they are PS1 comparable in res ( slightly lower res than PS1 ) without its heavy warping drawbacks. You get the best of both worlds on one system. Poly crunching= PS1 slightly ahead of N64 but they both excel at this with different strengths with Saturn 3rd but there is a caveat worth mentioning. How, why? This doesn't take into account high level parallelism with both Saturn SH2 CPUS and its DSP subsystem in conjunction with VDP1 and VDP2 which, if combined could produce higher poly crunching than PS1 GTE and CPU and GPU but it never fully materialised because of the complexity and coding ability required ( rare exception being The Unreal Saturn demo recently released online, you should have a look very impressive stuff ) so the PS1 ease of design was simply more "efficient" and easier to get up and running than both Saturn and N64. PS1 excelled at small to medium size triangles, not large ones, whearas N64 excelled at medium to large triangles, not small ones due to architecture differences and N64 having a few bottlenecks slowing it down ( spec sheet numbers being higher than PS1 doesn't explain the inner workings of these machines real world results. One more thing to mention is PS1 and Saturn are really both 2D in their approach to 3D rendering ( sprites are the 3D in both ) as the rasteriser part after the polys are sorted and displayed lack any data to calculate them within the world ( Saturn does have an approximation and it is very effective but that is all ) unlike N64 which has floating point operations to do it all fully properly. Colour/texture shading, gouraud shading and lighting= N64 and Saturn both share top spot but for different reasons, PS1 3rd with a small caveat. How, why? PS1 does multiplacative shading giving it less overall colour shading bandwidth ( shading is halved and is reason for reliance on dithering to make up for it ) and depth to textures with deep colours, the benefit however is brighter white colours than Saturn and N64 but with much less complex coloured lighting and gouraud shading. Saturn does additive texture shading and no dithering and can do many dynamic poly light sources on poly textures, with better texture shading than both PS1 ( Quake ) and N64, however N64 can do more point light sources ( Quake 2 ) than Saturn and PS1. PS1 can't do much of either at their level. Visual effects suite= Saturn and N64 tied again for different reasons and PS1 3rd. Why, how? Simple in Saturn case VDP2= Infinite 3D poly planes ( think of it as one giant polygon= a generational leap literally in fillrate versus the N64 and PS1 ( over 500 mtexels Saturn, 150 mtexels "average" N64, less than 100 mtexels" average" PS1 ) ( ever wonder why they use fog at close range, N64 has much more levels of fog than PS1 in hardware so it looks better, Saturn can mimic N64 fog " Sonic R" but it requires expert coding and it's still not exactly the same. Saturn draw distance is massive compared to PS1 and N64 including full high res, perspective correct detail being maintained, no flat poly shading is used unlike PS1 ( Spyro )and N64 ( Mario 64 ) to improve draw distance, it would be impossible literally using PS1 and N64 polygon engines to make that deficit up. It's a massive understatement to diminish the sheer brute force that would be needed even on PC 3D acceleraters to match this at the time. I can't emphasise how much processing power the Saturn is needing to do this as people seem to, surprisingly not think fillrate mattered for 3D in the 5th gen it absolutely does matter.This also happens to benefit by freeing up VDP1 to do more complex 3D shapes, both VDP1 and VDP2 are doing 3D there are no fake 3D tricks but the method is complex and unique to Saturn 3D rendering. N64 and Saturn excel at water rendering with N64 having a slight edge due to advanced physics ( Waverace 64 ) with PS1 simply not very good at rendering fluid water at all ( crash bandicoot 3 being the only decent water I can think of late1998 ). PS1 excels at alpha transparancy blending as does N64, Saturn is very poor at this falling back on half mesh effects on VDP1, however VDP2 excels at transparancy effects but overall its dead last at these. Annimated textures Saturn comes ahead of both as they simply can't produce VDP2 texture effects ( Panzer dragoon saga= sand dunes wave effect). N64 excels at specular effects on textures with Saturn and PS1 sharing 2nd place. Saturn excels at multi layer special effects combined like gouraud shading, specular, dynamic lights, distortion effects, complex water and half mesh and full transparancies along with coloured shading combined in a single frame ( Shining Force 3 scenario 3 high level magic effects ). PS1 can do only 3 of these in a single frame such as alpha transparacies, coloured shading and specular/gouraud shading= only one at a time ( FF7 to FF9 vivi magic effects ) as it lacks the complex multi-processor approach but it was easier than N64 because of its efficient design and N64 was very powerful at doing many of these same effects as Saturn but not all at the same time as Saturn not helped due to bottlenecks ( high memory latency and stalling ) in hardware. FMV= PS1 excels at video due to high res CD and hardware mpeg decoding, Saturn is 2nd due only to lacking mpeg decoding hardware causing artifacts but has the same CD high res as PS1, N64 can technically do it ( RE2 ) but it's not designed for it ( carts limited space ) and limited to extremely low res, artifacts and video output. Audio= Saturn having a very slight edge over PS1 but in fairness they're very similar the only difference being Saturn has the most advanced and flexible chip with 32 channels PCM sampling and FM synth whearas PS1 has 24 channels PCM, no FM synth but it has hardware compression which does help reduce the gap to a degree. N64 is simply only able to produce audio in software on its CPU ( no audio chip ) so it's greatly hobbled in this area. It is programmable, however up to 64 channels but no games ever reached this number let alone PS1 and Saturn numbers. So there you go= 3D is more than just poly caculations when it comes to actually rendering a frame by frame complex graphics scene. There are plenty of games that show these in action on all the systems, I've given a few examples and each one would be very difficult to impossible to replicate their games on each that played to their strengths. None of them had all the advantages for 3D graphics rendering without some major compromises due to how they worked. If the Saturn was poorly thought out with 3D ( Model 1 poly levels? ) as an afterthought then the complex stuff it can do in 3D games should be doable on PS1 and N64 without breaking a sweat, right?

if you were a japanese kid the saturn was incredible with its awesome library, westerners really missed out on a lot of other great titles never ported over which was a shame. I hadn't a clue of what the saturn had to offer and if I did I still would've much preferred it over the ps1. a great, great system fumbled by sega.
For most of my life I said "SEEEGA" then suddenly I switched to "SAYGA" dunno why maybe the boot up inspired me. Like you I grew up on import consoles and they still feel the most authentic to me still!!! lol
I feel like I've never heard someone say "SEAGA", it took me by surprise! I definitely took my cue from the "SAYGA" booting the old Mega Drive. I grew up in Lancashire and never said it any differently as far as I can remember.
Why do you get copyright strikes on game music? You would only get copyright strikes on licenced music in the game, but ingame audio created by Sega for the actual game wouldn't be a problem. There are millions of daytona uploads on youtube.

If it was not for Tekken and the Final Fantasy, the Sega Saturn was a much superior system in term of arcade, 2D Fighters, JRPGs and other bizarre games. it was less politically correct also. porn games were available in Japan.

Daytona was fun to play. Sure it's graphics looked a tad dated even back then but it's just such a good game.

When I turn the saturn on it automatically fills the full screen, I manually change the aspect, maybe that helps?
