This was by far the most comprehensive review of this or any hammock that I've seen, and I've watched a great many over the past several years. Thanks for posting it. Cheers, b.
Great review I just got and tested out my Blackbird XLC. I'm 6'4" and can lay straight and flat. Sleeping on my side is also very comfortable. Watching you videos played a big part in helping me sort through all the hammock options out there. Also your Hennessy review helped my girlfriend out that is the hammock she went with.
being a big person at 6'6" i love my blackbird xlc. i also got quilts from arrowhead, the KAW 3 season and with a thermarest zlite i have slept warm to 15 so far. i also have the winter top cover which aids in keeping me warm at night. the craftsmanship on the hammock cottage venders like warbonnet, arrowhead, dutch ect. is second to none. i paired my xlc with a mamjama tarp and again awesome quality.
Nice review. I'm a tent guy, but I also have the NeoAir X-Therm pad. It's the most expensive piece of camping gear I own, and it's worth every penny. I can't sleep on the ground without it.
Great review!!. Haha! I as well went from the ENO to the Hennessy Hammock jungle safari to now getting ready to purchase the warbonnet blackbird xlc, by far your review is a contributing factor in the purchase of the warbonnet! Thanks for a great review!
Yup very detailed. Works very well with a big agnes air pad as well and they are almost 4" thick. I'm a big dude at 6'10". Mine is perfect. Double layer. I ordered a single layer. Some mix up. Waiting for my underquilt. Great review. 😊
Thanks for the great review. I'm looking to upgrade my hammock setup. Like you, I started with the ENO Nest, but I'm just not comfortable sleeping in it anymore. I'm trying to decide between the Hennessy Expedition and the Warbonnet Blackbird. After watching both your reviews, I really like the looks of the Warbonnet Blackbird.
Fantastic info. I have similar gear purchased, but have not had a chance to use it other than day use. It's great to see how it's all going to come together - Warbonnet, Enlightened quilt, and Thermarest. Brand new to hammocks and as someone who is 5'7" I felt like I was not sitting in it correctly, but you've demonstrated just what it should look like. Appreciate you showing how the cinch buckles attach too.
Thanks for a great review. There are dozens out there about the Blackbird and this is one of the most useful and thorough. No need to sell me though. I've had a Blackbird for 5 years. and just upgraded to the XLC.
Outstanding review. I picked up my Hennessy Bottom Entry Backpacker Ultralight on Craigslist for $50 and although its been a great starter hammock for me, your review of the Blackbird has got me convinced it's time to upgrade.
I have a HH expedition and it drives me insane!! I've been researching the Blackbird xlc double and hands down your video just sold. ha, I wish I came across the BB before the HH Top notch review. Cheers. NL, Canada.
So I've watched more reviews and this is still my fav. I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison with the Blackbird XLC. Especially from someone else on the smaller side. I'm a 5'8" 115lb woman. I'm sure the regular BB would be fine, but I wonder if the XLC would keep the bug netting farther from my face at night, and give me more space under the net to sit & read (I live in the southeast so skeeters are a problem at camp). P.S. Shug showed a trick for raising the ridgeline while sitting in the hammock by wrapping it around a carabiner a few times. Then, just remove it when you go to lie down.
Excellent review! You answered a lot of my questions on the Blackbird vs the Hennessy Expedition Asym which I have. I also have the Warbonnet Ridgerunner which is super comfy but there are times when the poles and the big tarp are a pain. I like the Hennessy for its fast setup and compact size but I have the same issues with it that you mentioned. Maybe its time to sell it and get a Blackbird. Thanks for taking the time to make the video!
Jason, great review. You cover details not in other videos. I have always used tents when backpacking but used a small netless hammock this summer and liked it. The Blackbird XLC was one I considered but today ordered a Hennessy Explorer Ultralite Asym Zip because it was a demo and $101 off the regular price, plus it comes with a rainfly. Hope it will still be comfortable enough. Thanks for all your hammock videos.
+Daniel Helmbrecht I tried the the backpacker ultralight and it was a little small for me but the fabric was similar to the blackbird. I believe the explorer is a littler more roomy than the backpacker model. Let me know how you like it.
+Outdoor Adventures Just returned from an overnight trip to Minister Creek and had a good first hang in the Hennessy Explorer Ultralite and was comfortable. Camped just behind the overlook. Lots of great hanging spots there.
I started with the Hennessy and it was a good hammock but I really love my Warbonnet. My Hennessy was one of the old “birth canal” models. The side entry is so much better. I have found it to be a solid 4 season hammock. The convenience or that gear shelf can not be stated enough. Great review, thanks for sharing!
@@FrozensAdventures at the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man, when I first got my Hennessey, bottom entry was the option available for their hammocks!
+uptrail71 www.warbonnetoutdoors.com Since it's a mom and pop shop you have to order right from Warbonnet which can be found at www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/
Awesome review! I'm about to buy the exact same hammock. I want double layer for mosquito protection (I'm in the south) & for my sleeping pad, until I can afford an underquilt. Thanks for systematically showing how all the features work! 👍👍
Warbonnet only offers the 1.6 and 1.7 fabric now. I don't think mosquitoes will be able to get through 1.6 they do on the 1.1 though. I've noticed bites around my ankles when using a 3/4 length underquilt.
I enjoyed your review and basically do the same but with a few minor changes. I leave the carabiners attached to the straps all the time , this way they are there and ready to be used. This is the biggest benefit for me ...Camping in the swamps of Florida and the 10,000 islands ( Everglades ) area. I can vouch for the Warbonnet Blackbird being mosquito proof. Out of all the hammocks I have only two are totally bug proof the Warbonnet Blackbird and the Clark Tropical hammock. Not just talking about just the netting over the top of the two but all the material that makes up the hammocks. Both have been my go to hammocks , for a long time , when camping in buggy areas. Both are side entry hammocks , The Blackbird only on one side and the Clark Tropical , either side. During the night when Mosquitoes on the outside of the hammock look like someone is dumping black pepper past your hammock it is great when you know they can not get to you. My old model of the Hennessy Safari Del. is a bottom entry and the bottom is not bug proof , the would bite threw the bottom material. Back then I wanted to switch to a bug proof side entry. Today Hennessy has a choice of either a bottom or side entry. Plus I understand they have one hammock that is bug proof all the way around. When I am not using the under quilts and use the Therm-A-Rest in a hammock I inflate it about half way so it forms to my body better. For pack-ability in my backpack my Blackbird is the smallest package of my totally bug proof hammocks. The main reason for that is that the rain fly is not attached to the hammock. You have a wide choice of the rain flays since they are purchased separately.
+Chuck Littleton check out Dutchwaregear.com for the Dutch clip. I usually leave those attached to my webbing full time. The basically take the place of a carabiner.
Wooh, my hammock just arrived last night! Ironically, for SoCal, it actually started sprinkling as I set it up in my yard -_- lol. My rainfly is in the mail, so I jerri-rigged my tent fly over it... because I had to try it!
I ordered the Warbonnet Blackbird and Edge tarp today. I'm not sure what I will need for lines and hardware yet, but I'll check around after it comes. I'll check for Black Friday sales for the underquilt . Your video is why I ordered the Warbonnet over the Dream Hammock. I also see that Sintax bought a Dutch Hammock. That also makes me question the Dream Hammock if he switched. Thanks! Bob
+uptrail71 You'll love it dude, I promise. I think Sintax bought a dutch hammock so he could use the dutch winter sock because his bug net is sewn a bit high on the hammock and to use the sock correctly you have to reach out and pull it up over you while inside the hammock. I was debating ordering a dutch one for winter and use a sock as well but I want to see how the blackbird handles just by leaving the bugnet tied up. As far as lines for the tarp I use zing it dutchware bling, it's been great. Check out this video from Wabonnet, it was very informative to see how much line I needed. (ua-cam.com/video/UHuUmNOwBAw/v-deo.html) For dutchware I recommend dutch hooks to replace carabiners, less bulky less weight. I also really like dutches hookworms for the guylines. You can see them in the black forest / morrison trips.
For $125 you can get the Warbonnet Eldorado. It is the same thing as the Blackbird XLC minus the shelf built into the mosquito net. The Eldorado has the full zip off bugnet that I will eventually upgrade to the XLC winter top with storage shelf. I went for the lighter weight and cheaper entry price for the Eldorado. I haven’t ever had a bunch of stuff in my hammock to store on a shelf so having one without a shelf for now won’t make me feel like I’m missing out on a feature. When I get the winter cover, I figure the shelf will be nice to store extra layers of clothing and/or bedding in. You can also get an Eldorado winter cover without a shelf but I can imagine a shelf in the winter would be very useful. The Eldorado does still have the mosquito net pullout on the one side that your head is near. And the Eldorado has a one ended stuffsack with two loops that clip onto two prusiks that are installed on the ridgeline when you get it. It would surprise me if the Blackbird stuffsack doesn’t also have two loops to connect to the ridgeline if you chose to remove it from the hammock as you hang it. If the Blackbird bag doesn’t have loops, you could just use the cords on either end to tie it up to the ridgeline keeping one end tight and the end facing you a little looser. Without even laying in mine I know it is well worth the $125. And I can upgrade it into a winter Blackbird. After I upgrade to a Blackbird winter cover and use the shelf I might decide I want the shelf in the summer and I can buy that too.
Other one was wearing out. Wanted to try something new. More minimalist, the warbonnet is awesome but they are using heavier materials now which I don't need. Dream hammock is more customizable.
been using by xlc all summer for the bug net and decided to shave a little weight this weekend and use my old netless dutch hammock with the whoopies.. I feel like i gave up my tempurpedic for a Costco mattress lol. I cannot get to sleep.. I think I'm gonna have to justify carrying the weight next time lol
+Ian Frye haha I know the feeling. When winter hit last year and I switched to the Dutch netless I just couldn't get comfy. I bought a Warbonnet traveler hopefully taking it out soon.
Thanks for mentioning the longer model, at 6'3" most things end up begin little short... this will be my first hammock and that was my major concern. Packed it looks a little larger than I would have guessed, how flexible / compressible is it when in the stuff sack... thinking it will have to bend and conform to my bicycle frame shape a fair amount
All the fabrics shrink down quite a bit and you can always remove the suspension of needed. That's what makes it bulky. When it's wet I to store it in my mesh.
Just ordered a XLC based on your review and others. Went with the Mamajamba tarp. Gonna pick up a UQ and hopefully stick the MSR tent in the back of the closet for good. Thanks for the helpful reviews Jason
I really liked your video of the Zeleski State Forest. Since the epidemic, I've been researching backpacking and plan to splurge on some tougher gear for a long-term hobby. I love to walk. I've hiked 10 miles day hikes my entire life, a year ago I day-hiked 20 miles of the Maumee River in a single day, and recently I've done a shorter overnight hike with my wife along the Manistee River in MI. I would like to try pushing myself in someplace rough like Zeleski. I have an older Field and Stream frame pack and a couple of simple $30 Field and Stream hammocks with tree straps and 'biners. Having a large family to take care of, I don't have endless amounts of $$$ to throw at a hobby, so being a guy of 6' tall exactly, I want to know if I need the Blackbird XLC or if the original Blackbird will be just fine. Buckles sounds great. I like simple. Just not sure about that length...how tall are you? Do you have any 6' friends who use the original? What do they do?
I'm a tent backpacker but I have been doing some research into hammocks. I have mostly been looking at bridge hammocks like the Ridgerunner, but after watching your video, I was impressed by some of the features on this one. But comparing them, I'm confused because I expected the price on the Blackbird to be lower than the Ridgerunner. Do you have any explanation as to why that might be?
Honestly not sure. I have a Ridgerunner that was gifted to me, I sleep pretty good in it as well but prefer the easier setup and weight with the blackbird. Dream Hammock is also worthy of a look as well, my Darien has been my favorite model.
Ok...sold...gotta have it...question though...I am 6' even...maybe 5' 11" depending on the day...do I need the XLC? I really do like the fold-back-and-tie-up method better to be truthful.
Great review. Glad to hear the comparisons. I've never done hammocks but I'm thinking about it. but I'm 6' and 250, plus I have a Pit-bull. I was going to ask about the size of the rain fly but it sounds like that is a separate purchase. Maybe just use a tarp from Aqua-Quest? Or do they sell a large rain fly that will cover a bit of a camp area? This may be a dumb question, but can hammocks be done with a dog?
You can for sure do it with a small dog (under beagle size) No experience with anything bigger. might be kind of hard, maybe looking into dreamhammocks and get a heavy fabric + a wide.
Great review! I have 3 questions: Does the underquilt covers your footbox completly? Whats best: underquilt or pad? Regarding the ridge line in the way of your head when you put out the bug net to seat during the day, it is possible to put a gap breaking it (the ridgeline) in two sections and put a fastener buckler or small hooks? Thanks!
Yes it does. An underquilt would be best but most people start with pads. For the ridgeline question. No need to cut it and retie you can add anything you want to the ridgeline from the end which comes out of the hammock as long as you can shove it through the gathered end.
Do you use the under quilt a lot? I do a lot of PA trails and it can drop to 50's in summer and just ordered the XLC but not sure if I need the UQ or not?
You'll need an underquilt in temps below 65-70 degrees depending on how warm you sleep, even more so if it's windy. This video may help with concepts if you'd like to check it out ua-cam.com/video/dYtbxjeWW-Q/v-deo.htmlm18s
Great review. Do you have any issues with water dripping off the ridgeline inside the hammock? Thinking of getting the XLC and edge tarp, wondering if the edge will be large enough.
+lowwkey91 I don't with the blackbird and edge combo. but check this video out if you have issues. I carry a couple drip lines with me if it rains hard. But hasn't been needed yet because the tarp has rings at the ends of the tarp ridgeline which breaks the water nicely, and also nothing has ever gotten past my cinch buckles.. ua-cam.com/video/c0-uOekjcU0/v-deo.html
Jason, I realize this review is 5 years old but it was still very helpful for me. I see that you have a ridgeline organizer in your Warbonnet. How do you get that on your ridgeline? I bought one also but not sure how to get it on the ridgeline inside the hammock. Thanks in advance.
It was a pain actually. I had to fish tie a string onto one end of the Ridgeline so I could put it back through the whipped end of the hammock. Hope that helps.
I have been thinking about the blackbird but I have never slept in a hammock but I hear great things about this hammock. I have also been looking at the Amok hammock. None the less a great review. By the way what under quilt did you use.
+james york I use an Enlightened Equipment Revolt UQ and Revelation TQ have been great for me, check my channel I also just recently reviewed those 2 items as well.
It was funny to go back and watch your Hennessy review. You thought it was so comfortable at the time. Besides the fly, what did you end up not liking? Also what we are thoughts on the Ultralight Backpacker? That’s the one I have but I have my own issues with that. So I’m looking at the Blackbird.
When I had the UL backpacker I was using a pad so I sent it back. It just didn't feel good with a pad. I love the blackbird though still. However I am using a dream hammock Darien this year.
i found it interesting that you liked the foot box so useful and it made em curious to how small the hammocks you normaly use are to not be able to do that in all of them?
+Constable Cunning Warbonnet sews a triangle piece of fabric over the feet area to give it the footbox feel, in other fabrics your feet push out the fabric to do that and in my opinion it get a little strenuous over time. It tends to pinch the feet.
It depends, sometimes I hang it from on of the trees I'm using for my hammock. Most times though I leave it under my hammock on a piece of polycro (window insulation) that I also use for my shoes. You can find polycro on amazon for pretty cheap. It's lightweight and durable and waterproof.
Hey Frozen, amazing review! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this...five years later, and the info you shared still holds true! I'm curious, though--what suspension system did you use on the AT? I know you didn't take the Blackbird, but I'm wondering if you used Whoopie slings or any becket hitch/marlinspikes to save weight, or if you stuck with the cinch buckles? Thanks, man & keep up the good work! --Little Muffin
Hey! I just used a cinch buckle system from dutchware and the poly pro dyneema straps. It was perfect. I have all my gear I used in my AT playlist. Reviewed pre and post hike.
Primarily I use enlightened equipment full length revolt underquilts, one rated to 30F and one for 0F. I also just got a hammock gear 40 3/4 length phoenix for temps above 55F.
Good review. Subbed. Where is your review of the ENO Doublenest you mentioned in this video? If you don't have a video review of it, please write your comment as a comparison to the Blackbird. How did it compare? Or why was the Doublenest not as good as the Blackbird, in your opinion?
+Steadman Uhlich I had a review on the ENO onelink system (doublenest hammock, bugnet, tarp, atlas straps) I gave the bugnet a really bad review and realized after my friend had brought his out during a camping trip that I received a defective product, so i took it down in hopes of making just the hammock video review. The parachute nylon fabric ENO uses isn't all that great, it snags easily, I have a lot of small rips in mine after minor use around the back yard and only a few nights out with it. For the money there are man manufacturers that use the same material as the ENO for much cheaper, I got sent a Ohuhu Hammock and was amazed at the quality being the same as the ENO and it was even a lot lighter.. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VTGNCPO?keywords=ohuhu%20hammock&psc=1&qid=1445820946&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1-spons That being said, I like the ENO for lounging around camp, but I get a far superior sleep in my blackbird or hennessy.
Just wondering if you kept your ENO and Hennessy? And if so, do you still use them from time to time or let friends try them to get them into hammock camping.. This hammock is definitely my next purchase, the XLC. I like the looks of that flat lie you're getting- and that shelf. So far I started with the doublenest onelink, went to the Hennessy Deluxe Asym Zip.. (Seems everyone goes this same route!) And now want this one. I plan on keeping them all- and drag friends out to hopefully get them into this addiction as well. I felt both the ENO and the Hennessy were comfortable laying in- but I'm still not getting the best night sleep out there yet. Still experimenting-and just got an underquilt.. So still learning. Very informative vid-- thanks again for sharing!
+stowe18 heh yea everyone does the same thing. ENO to Hennessy to their hammock they end up loving. I kept the ENO but rarely ever use it. I actually just recently got a 2nd blackbird. This way I can bring my girlfriend out with me.
Hey I know that this is an older video but I have to ask about a cover. I mean it looks like the best bang for the buck, but what about in the rain?also if it didn't have cover what do you recommend?
I was using the Hammock Gear organizer but noticed some abrasion on the netting of my new hammock so I switched to this one from dutchware: dutchwaregear.com/product/ridgeline-organizer/ Mine doesn't have the 2nd side pocket but it looks like he's sewing them on their now.
So what tarp do you use with this hammock? Great review. If I had a butt load of money, I would be replacing my Hennessey with this for myself and my wife.
Warbonnet decided not to offer lighter fabric and lost my business to dream hammock. While the blackbird is a great hammock. I'd like to see them offer more custom options. Dream hammock has been awesome for me. Specifically the Darien model.
Did you get the 1.1 or the 1.7 fabric? I don't think you mentioned it in the video. Btw, great review. I also have the enough double best and I can't seem to get comfortable.
+408grow I like the warbonnet edge tarp for the money. I'm using a cuben fiber HG tarp but they are expensive. Sleeping pad I would say the zlite by thermarest. And klymat has a couple good ones as well. For comfort I always recommend an underquilt
Outdoor Adventures thanks man, appreciate. still stand by your recommendations? literally just got my double 1.1 and I'm about to order dutch clipz instead of carabiners
What kind of carabiners are you using? Rock climbing carabiners? Or just cheap ones? I just bought one. And I don't know if I should buy rock climbing carabiners or if any will do.
+silence6210 In this video I am using black diamon neutrino climbing carabiners. However I recommend these very highly dutchwaregear.com/dutch-clip.html they are easier to use, less bulky, and about the same price. make sure to set them up correctly though.
+Outdoor Adventures thank your for your response! I actually like the carabiners because I can use them for other things. When I'm buying on eBay, a lot them don't put the weight limit on the description a lot. Is there any other way to tell?
Only but visiting the manufacturers website which I believe have to list the weight limits for safety purposes and if you don't see a weight limit it probably isn't safe to use.
The foot box on this hammock has really got me thinking about this being an option. I am a side sleeper for the most part. How do you sleep and do you know of anyone who is a side sleeper that this works well for them?
For me I usually start on my back and then when I start drifting to sleep I usually roll onto my side, so yes you can sleep on your side in this hammock. I put my arm under my pillow and deflate it as necessary to create the needed support.
Also consider Hammock Bliss Bug Free Sky Bed, has a built in sleeve for 20” air mattress and also has asymmetrical cut and footbox. Not as roomy or feature laden, but great for side sleepers
So I somehow missed this I don’t k ow how many times. I tried it out this past weekend and i was able to fall asleep much faster. Thanks for the response man. Made my weekend trip a whole star better!
Under $100 I'd recommend the Warbonnet Edge Tarp. Plenty of coverage in most weather. www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/edge/ For added storm protection check out the minifly which has mini doors on to stop sideways rain. www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/minifly-tarp/ I think Warbonnet makes awesome tarps. I'm personally using a Hammock Gear DCF tarp with doors these days.
+CON Productions I have a 3 season quilt I use from 70 to 30 and and a winter one for under 30 to 0. Also if I combine both quilts I am able to supposedly get to - 20F
+Sage McReynolds I have a square of Polycro. (window insulation) I put under the hammock and it stays there when wet. When it's dry sometimes I just hang it with some zingit from a tree.
Yes it was the one from Dream Hammocks. However I ended up removing and using the Hammockgear one, it's a lot better. www.hammockgear.com/hammock-gear-ridgeline-organizer/
I only have the organizer from Hammock Gear. In the meanwhile, I have made three of them myself with measurements optimized to hold the maps I usually use.
For winterizing it, it largely depends on the underquilt rating, the overquilt rating, and any sleep pads you use with the hammock. There's a UA-cam guy named Shugemery who has a video of him going out in -30 through -40 degrees! Crazy, but it goes to show you that the temperature rating depends on your padding, and not on the hammock itself.
If people use an attached winter cover, they have a vent to reduce condensation. Here's the video I was talking about. But he doesn't have a winter cover. ua-cam.com/video/CTuGJgka1qc/v-deo.html
This was by far the most comprehensive review of this or any hammock that I've seen, and I've watched a great many over the past several years. Thanks for posting it. Cheers, b.

Thanks for the great review. I'm looking to upgrade my hammock setup. Like you, I started with the ENO Nest, but I'm just not comfortable sleeping in it anymore. What made you go with the XLC insted of the original?
maybe the fact that it's roomier and the zipper goes all the way around so you can take the bug netting off
@@tobiasnyqvist6232 its just better
The best hammock review that I watched!
Thanks!
This was so helpful, and I am now finally ready to buy my warbonnet hammock. Thank you so much.
I've been researching the Blackbird xlc double and hands down your video just sold. ha, I wish I came across the BB before the HH
Top notch review. Cheers.
This is a brilliant and immensely helpful review, thanks! What a legend.
Much appreciated!
wow, great review. I'm sure this is the best hammock review I've ever seen. you made me wanna get one of these so bad.
and I got one, 1.1 double layers. i'm really enjoying it. thanks.
Nice video review. The camera work excellent also. Content spot on. good stuff! Thanks!
Excellent reviewer, I am a certifiably crazy hammock collector; 8 to date including a Hennessey that I have never really liked. I want this one!
+Larry Vickery I think I have 6 now. It's an addiction.
Yea I never understood why people opted for bottom entry. It just makes underquilt adjustment harder.
@@FrozensAdventures at the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man, when I first got my Hennessey, bottom entry was the option available for their hammocks!
ok great... thanks for the reply and posting your review dude.enjoy your hammock
I still use a tent, but Warbonnet Blackbird is on the top of my list. I have been looking around for about 3 months now in no hurry.
+uptrail71 Warbonnet usually runs a sale on black friday and Christmas. That's when I got mine last year.
Thanks I'll buy one then! Where did you buy it from?
+uptrail71 www.warbonnetoutdoors.com Since it's a mom and pop shop you have to order right from Warbonnet which can be found at www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/
Thanks! I'll watch to see if they have a sale and order one by the end of this year. Your review helped me decide on this one. Bob
That is sweet! Plus the weight is fantastic. I'll definitely share the info.
I have this exact same hammock. I use the eno double in my house now.
One of best gear reviews I have seen. Thanks. Sold me.
Thanks! You'll love it!
I could definitely be a skeeter tester. The gallinippers have bitten me through my clothing before! Thanks for the feedback.
Great review man. You covered everything I wanted to know, i.e. the under-quilt and the shelf/tie-out. Thanks!
+FeebLe26181 glad it helped!
+Outdoor Adventures
Thanks for the heads up on the Dutchwaregear.com web site , lots of goodies on there.
Wooh, my hammock just arrived last night! Ironically, for SoCal, it actually started sprinkling as I set it up in my yard -_- lol. My rainfly is in the mail, so I jerri-rigged my tent fly over it... because I had to try it!
Thanks for the recommendation!
(ua-cam.com/video/UHuUmNOwBAw/v-deo.html)
For dutchware I recommend dutch hooks to replace carabiners, less bulky less weight. I also really like dutches hookworms for the guylines. You can see them in the black forest / morrison trips.
Thanks for the info. I'll have my wife try it out when it comes. Then save up to see what she wants. Bob
Great review! I have everything else for hiking, I might as well start saving for this.
Yes the eldorado is a newer model than when this video was published. I was look at it but I prefer a lighter fabric.
So looking back you liked this hammock, but chose a dream hammock for the AT. Why? Weight?, comfort?, function?
Other one was wearing out. Wanted to try something new. More minimalist, the warbonnet is awesome but they are using heavier materials now which I don't need. Dream hammock is more customizable.
Sold. Ordered mine today 😁
been using by xlc all summer for the bug net and decided to shave a little weight this weekend and use my old netless dutch hammock with the whoopies..
I'd recommend the XLC if you are 6' you don't want to buy a 10' hammock at that height.
@@FrozensAdventures good. that's what I ended up ordering. Zeleski, here I come.
Very helpful. I think i have found exactly what i was looking for. Thank you!
Great review ! Love my XLC 1.7
Nice job. I'm getting one.
+PigIron BigIron You will love it
Super helpful! Thank you!
Awesome review alot of detail
Ok...sold...gotta have it...question though...I am 6' even...maybe 5' 11" depending on the day...do I need the XLC? I really do like the fold-back-and-tie-up method better to be truthful.
Yes 6 foot and up I recommend an 11 foot hammock.
Great review. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Self inflating sleeping pads work very well in the Hennessy. They do not move around like air pads.
Great review! I have 3 questions:
Does the underquilt covers your footbox completly?
+Outdoor Adventures OKAY it makes much more sense now. thanks for the quick reply
Hi Frozen, just wondering how you store your backpack when hammock camping? I usually store mine in my tent. Thanks and great videos!
It depends, sometimes I hang it from on of the trees I'm using for my hammock. Most times though I leave it under my hammock on a piece of polycro (window insulation) that I also use for my shoes. You can find polycro on amazon for pretty cheap. It's lightweight and durable and waterproof.
what's with the cinder blocks in the background?
it doesn't appear that you can mummy into the bottom quilt. If thats a bad thing. Love the review
@@FrozensAdventures Awesome, thank you! Hope you guys are staying safe & healthy
We are! Thanks
very nice detailed review ...thanks!

Hi nice video just wondering what under quilt you using thanks
Primarily I use enlightened equipment full length revolt underquilts, one rated to 30F and one for 0F. I also just got a hammock gear 40 3/4 length phoenix for temps above 55F.
Cool, You just talked me into ordering one.
If you have any specific questions don't hesitate to email warbonnet, their customer service is very responsive and friendly.
For the money there are man manufacturers that use the same material as the ENO for much cheaper, I got sent a Ohuhu Hammock and was amazed at the quality being the same as the ENO and it was even a lot lighter.. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VTGNCPO?keywords=ohuhu%20hammock&psc=1&qid=1445820946&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1-spons
That being said, I like the ENO for lounging around camp, but I get a far superior sleep in my blackbird or hennessy.
+Outdoor Adventures thanks for the answer. Keep up the good work.
Great review! Would other underquilts fit as nicely? Or are you using compatible warbonnet underquilt?
+The Wimpy Camper any underquilt will work. The blackbird is just a normal hammock. With a piece of triangle bugnetting sewn near the feet.
Outdoor Adventures great! Thx! Just subbed to your channel - you're awesome!
What kind of tarp do you use with it? Do you use a Warbonnet brand tarp?
This or a dream hammock are my favorite hammocks. You'll need a tarp in the rain.
Frozen, can you share a link for a ridgeline organizer that you recommend for the Warbonnet Blackbird?
I was using the Hammock Gear organizer but noticed some abrasion on the netting of my new hammock so I switched to this one from dutchware: dutchwaregear.com/product/ridgeline-organizer/ Mine doesn't have the 2nd side pocket but it looks like he's sewing them on their now.
Have you ever thought about getting or tried out the warbonnet ridgerunner? Was curious about your thoughts on that..
+stowe18 I wouldn't mind trying a bridge hammock if I knew someone that had it. I think it would be a little more comfortable but more weight.
Is this the hammock you carried on the AT?
No I carried a dream hammock Darien the entire way. This is also a really good model though.
So what tarp do you use with this hammock? Great review. If I had a butt load of money, I would be replacing my Hennessey with this for myself and my wife.
+Joseph “EarthTone” Harold I use the Warbonnet Edge at the moment. Great tarp never had a problem with it. Also light and packs down pretty small.
Did you ever test the X-therm for temperature in the WBB and did your arms get cold?
With a 0 degree sleeping bag and the xtherm I have gone down to 19F with no problems. No cold arms but I have a small frame.
I know this is an old video but was wondering if you still had this setup?
Warbonnet decided not to offer lighter fabric and lost my business to dream hammock. While the blackbird is a great hammock. I'd like to see them offer more custom options. Dream hammock has been awesome for me. Specifically the Darien model.
Did you get the 1.1 or the 1.7 fabric? I don't think you mentioned it in the video. Btw, great review. I also have the enough double best and I can't seem to get comfortable.
+PA Runner131 I have a double 1.1 and a single 1.1 I love them both.
You should do a video comparing the single layer to the double layer 1.1. Haven't seen many (any) videos on that.
It would be a really short video but the differences are that the single layer is a bit more stretchy. Also compresses a bit better in the stuff sack.
Thanks for your reply awesome keep up the good vids 👍
Great review! What color is your hammock? Is it charcoal or brown? Thanks
It's Olive.
Damn, looks pretty dark dough.
what sleeping pad & tarp would you suggest now-a-days with this hammock? thanks!
+408grow don't think I'll ever switch from this hammocks unless something comes along with a footbox.
Thanks, I might give this a try on some over nighters and shorter hikes.
Also consider Hammock Bliss Bug Free Sky Bed, has a built in sleeve for 20” air mattress and also has asymmetrical cut and footbox. Not as roomy or feature laden, but great for side sleepers
I don’t know if you have answered this before, but why do you like to set the foot end higher?
Helps with sliding downhill. Give you a flatter lay.
So I somehow missed this I don’t k ow how many times. I tried it out this past weekend and i was able to fall asleep much faster. Thanks for the response man. Made my weekend trip a whole star better!
What tarp would you recommend for the warbonnet blackbird under $100?
Under $100 I'd recommend the Warbonnet Edge Tarp. Plenty of coverage in most weather. www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/edge/
For added storm protection check out the minifly which has mini doors on to stop sideways rain. www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/minifly-tarp/
I think Warbonnet makes awesome tarps. I'm personally using a Hammock Gear DCF tarp with doors these days.
what temps do you use the under quilt in or do you use it all the time?
+CON Productions I have a 3 season quilt I use from 70 to 30 and and a winter one for under 30 to 0. Also if I combine both quilts I am able to supposedly get to - 20F
Great video!
Where do you put your pack when you're sleeping? Does it get wet when it rains?
+Sage McReynolds I have a square of Polycro. (window insulation) I put under the hammock and it stays there when wet. When it's dry sometimes I just hang it with some zingit from a tree.
What color is that in?
Great stuff!
What underquilt do you use?
I use hammock gear and enlightened equipment. Depending on the weather.
Do you still use it? Is this the XLC or the normal one?
+consumedesign this is the normal one and yes I use it very trip. I have a single and a double layer. And the netless version. Love them all
You said carabiner right!!
Where did you get the cinch system ?
Warbonnet makes this. Dutchware gear also makes some great buckles.
@@FrozensAdventures Thank You for the info. Appreciate it .
Still liking the Warbonnet?
Yes love them. I have a single 1.1, a double 1.1 and a traveler 1.1
I guess your ridgeline organizer is the one from Dream Hammocks. DD Hammocks doesn't have one like this.
Is the Warbonnet hammock made in the US??
Yes in Colorado
is the color brown or olive green?
+ChestNutGaming I think olive
ok because i am order my first hammock ever the blackbird and i like the color you have
so, works in the winter ?
For winterizing it, it largely depends on the underquilt rating, the overquilt rating, and any sleep pads you use with the hammock. There's a UA-cam guy named Shugemery who has a video of him going out in -30 through -40 degrees! Crazy, but it goes to show you that the temperature rating depends on your padding, and not on the hammock itself.
and with the condensation ?
If people use an attached winter cover, they have a vent to reduce condensation. Here's the video I was talking about. But he doesn't have a winter cover.
ua-cam.com/video/CTuGJgka1qc/v-deo.html
+Tanuki yes just leave the bugnet open or make a frost bib. I have a tutorial on the frost bib
