- I show how to install DIY wainscoting in our living room for at least half the cost. This is a simple project that anyone can do. There is more labor involved when you are saving money but it is still any easy project when you follow my step by step instructions. Don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss a video.
For this project I used 1x4 furring strips for all the boards.
Base boards are full width boards, the other horizontal and vertical boards were ripped down to 3". The board on top is a 3" board cut in half, which was about 1 3/8" after the saw blade takes a little off each side.
Material needed:
1x4 furring strips
drywall mud
wood filler
paintable caulking
paint
Tools used -
Table saw
planer ( you can use a sander )
nail gun and compressor
caulk gun
paint brush

Great Job! Just a suggestion, when spacing is needed between boards cut a spacer block and use it to get the same spacing between each strip. That will eliminate the need of having to measure the space between each strip.
your wife was spot on. Ive cut the tip of caulk with a different tool everytime for 100 yrs. I learned a valuable lesson today. Im a moron.
I really love how high these are. I have 12' ceilings in a 1900's home and need some cover up work. So thank You for your ideas - I'm going to be doing this super high and wallpapering the remainder.
Favorite part was letting the children help. Growing up us eight children were included in all projects in our apts and house. Learned many skills and trades!
Of all the DIY's on wainscoting I looked for, yours was the easiest. Thank you so much. I'm doing this work myself. No man in my life to bother. (haha) I'll send you a pic once i'm done.
Did you ever finish? Are you happy with it? DIY'r here too, about to do this to our half bath.
I loved the speed of your video, how you made it sound fun to do, and how you included your kids. That's real life and it made me smile multiple times. Also, thanks for including your mistakes (vacuum filter) so it helps me avoid them also.
I didn't know the part about using the hole to cut the tip of the caulk tube :)
Thanks for sharing that and for listening to your wife!
ME TOO!!!!!
Great job in getting the kiddos involved. You’re awesome.
Great job! It was nice to see you involving the kids in the project. They won't forget about how they helped dad "build a wall" when they get older. 😊
Love that the keiki helped! Beautiful!
I love it! I am restoring a historic home and plan on this in oak for the dining room with a plate rail at the top. Also for the staircase. Stained nice and dark. Yours looks great!
Great job! We loved the fact that you worked with your kiddos!
I love it!! I'm going to take it a step futher and router the edges to give it a more fancier expensive look! Thank you for showing us this!!
Nice family project. Good to get the kids involved .
Nice work Matt! Cool getting the kids involved too...well-done.
Outstanding!!!!! Great to see a Dad an son in project mode.
Looks beautiful!
Love your little helper! The project looks great!
Love you’re assistant!!
Great job Matt. Anyone who attempts or even tries a home diy, I give credit and from the looks of it, you did full on bang up job and wife would be pleased with. Give yourself a pat on the back!
great job ,i love that you included your family
Looks great!!! It was nice to see you little one helping too... Might have to try this
Beautiful job! Little guy did awesome!
Awesome job and you shared this simple technique nicely!
You are a great dad. There is no better way to initiate good work habits and sense of worth in our kids than letting them participate. Patience is God's way of disciplining our kids where you never have to yell or hit them. Although my son was not born when I built my house, my grandson loves working with grandpa. I can't fell more joy with him next to me.
The wall looks fabulous.
Scraping of the popcorn finish off is much easier. They make a tool for that to make it easy. I hope you kilz'd the wood first. Otherwise the knots will always surface. Painting the wall and trim first makes it super easy. Glue helps where there aren't any studs. I'm doing my living now and going to look into the furring strips. Thanks for the thought.
Very nice family project thank you for sharing 👍
That looks fantastic!
Beautiful work Matt!! I am going to try my hand at doing this. It will certainly save me a lot of money from buying the wainscoting panelling. Thank you so much for sharing your work! I love your wall!!🥰
Beautiful job! Watched several others and I certainly prefer your method and thouroughness.
A MAJOR BONUS: watching your son working hard, doing a darn good job and having father son pride in his work! Hubby and I loved that you actually let him do it and TRUSTED him, while guiding him through it. You've given him priceless tools and self esteem; he will carry that through life and know he achieve whatever he sets out to do because of what you just did and will continue to do with him.
Heart touching moment. That trust goes so, so far! Kudos and thumbs up.
totally agree with this, i have many memories of being in the shop with my dad from a young age. so many things i had forgotten about till watching carpentry videos. but i can hear him saying "closed toed shoes in the shop!" thanks for the video!
thanks for the quick lesson on caulk guns. I needed it.
Simple and really nice. Awesome job.
Well done! Perfect choice of information shared for would be DIYers.

Great job! And it's great you include your kids & have great patience with them. And yes, I never knew those things about a caulk gun (the cutting of the tip & the needle for puncturing). I learned something! I"m a DIY gal.
You and your partner did a fantastic job! Thanks for sharing.
I LOVE THE WAY YOUR SON HELPED TO PUT UP THE BOARD... GREAT JOB....

Great job, Matt, and definitely less expensive and easier than paying to have it done for you.
I hope you can ignore the haters- people like that just have to get their two cents in. I think your project turned out fantastic! Especially for us non-professionals. Thanks!

brilliant job buddy love it, thanks for sharing.
Great project! I plan on doing this in the living room. Thanks for the tutorial.
Great job!
Thank you wife!!! I needed that tip and will share with my hubby 😉
Good video, a couple tips from a similar project of mine. Rout the edges of the ledge so they are round, at 5 feet thats eye level for a lot of people, dont need to walk into a sharp corner. Use alcohol based primer on the wood, the dark knots will bleed through the paint within a year. Use floetrol additive when painting, gives it an enamel (smooth) look and not the eggshell look a roller will give you. That will make your wainscot have a different finish than the wall and will help seperate the look.
This is great advise. Thank you!
Shellac is the cheapest way to stop bleed through.
We use primed white pine finger joint stick from Lowes, Home Depot or trim stores. One to two coats of paint, no need to plane or sand. Good video for a simple board and batten wall. Loved seeing your son. Reminds me of my kids helping in my projects and now get to have a remodeling business with my youngest who is 25!
You and your helper did a great job , my walls are textured like yours I've been nervous about doing this after seeing this video I think I will give it a go ...
Stunning finish bro! And love the help from your son, keep it coming!

I love this video. Thank you for making it. You make it look so easy and doable. I am going to attempt to do the same on a wall in my house.

Nice work Buddy. Love it
Awesome job fella 👏👏👏👍
Great job!!! Thanks for doing this an easy way for DIY'ers like me.
Great Job!!!
It look so good, just a note though as I have damaged digits from industrial disaster - get the boys in covered footwear when they help out - 10 toes are still better than 9. You have a lovely family, helping and suggestions, and then you are leading the way for us all.
Excellent. Thanks for the caulk gun tip...all this time, I learned. 🤙
