When this dropped we went crazy. It was like he kicked the planet. He literally sent rappers "back to the lab" Changed the whole landscape of Hip Hop. You had to come hard. The dopest beat couldn't save you
Rakim is my own personal GOAT his flow is unheard of even above Biggie, Nas or Em. The best part of hip hop is we may agree on 90% of the top 10 but so many will have different top 3's.
One of the greatest rap songs in history! Rakim absolutely made the Mic smoke on this one!!!!!! Nobody tested Rakim because not only did everyone know he was on another level, but he was respected rap wide!
The greatest Lyricist in the history of rap. Still till this day, nobody can touch Rakim. Just my opinion of course. I can listen to Rakim and Tupac all day.
Rakim is one of the dopest emcees ever bar none. You should check out: Kool G Rap- Men At Work Boogie Down Productions- My Philosophy (video) Public Enemy- Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos (video)
I like that you picked up on him not cursing. He’s just so damn ill and lyrically creative. And you’re right…he was a VERY serious MC. He saw rapping as high art.
"You know he's serious". That might be one of the greatest compliments for Rakim. Honestly, in hip hop it's kind of like saying Einstein's E=MC². You're the first!
YES I was one of the people who requested this at your last Eric B and Rakim reaction -- thank you! Here's how funny life is and how one phone call can make such a huge difference. Eric B was a DJ and he wanted to make a record but he needed a rapper. Somebody he knew knew somebody else who knew this guy (Rakim) who wrote rhymes. Nobody knew who Rakim was at the time. When they first called Rakim (his name is actually William) and asked if he would be interested, he said no because he was just about to leave to play quarterback for a junior college. They talked him into meeting with them and, at the meeting, they talked him into just recording the one record with two songs (Eric B is President / My Melody). The label released a cassette around the city just to see how people liked it and it blew up New York City. Because of the success of the mixtape, he ended up recording an album and going on tour and not going to junior college. If they would have called him a month or so later, they would have missed him. Rakim is as important to modern hip-hop as Michael Jordan has to modern-day basketball. So important that, had he gone to junior college and none of us would have heard of him, who knows what hip hop might sound like today. He was so good, he raised the bar. When Rakim's first record was released, Run DMC was on top of the world. After we all got used to Rakim's level of talent, even groups like Run DMC couldn't really keep up anymore.
I was like ten or eleven when hip hop came out in the late seventies early eighties with groups like African Baambata ( think I spelled it wrong) and Grandmaster Flash then we get to Run DMC Beastie Boys LL Cool J EPMD Rakim Big Daddy Kane etc I could describe that experience of transition from James Brown Shalimar Luther Vandross Micheal Jackson but you'd really need a time machine to grasp the full impact But I'll never forget around 84 or 85 ( I was like fifteen) this older guy said rap would be obsolete in four or five years Needless to say rap is still going strong but has skeptical old heads as we're called Well this old head just wants the newer generation to at least acknowledge the roots of hip hop but they can't I wouldn't be surprised if in ten years most young people never heard of Tupac or Biggie let alone EPMD or Rakim but I'm that changes thanks to reactions such as yours
i love your facial expressions and locked into the song, i was in 7/8th grade nyc when this dropped and this is alll we sang everyday leaving school with the same face u had. 😂❤🎉
Imagine how we felt back when this dropped. We went bananas. Rakim sentball of MCs back to the lab..we had to rewrite our songs and change our cadence.
You’re face let me know, YOU GOT IT!!! Rakim is the GodEmcee… he was like 18 in 87-88. He’s the one! He still makes music , Check out some thing on his album called “the 18th letter”
Check out some of his album cuts, like THE 18TH LETTER, SAGA BEGINS, THE R, TEACH THE CHILDREN, WHAT'S GOIN ON, UPLIFT ETC. They're just as lyrical & deep as his hits. That's just one of the reasons why he's considered the God Mc.
He was the creator of hard core hip hop which is why he is referred to as the God Emcee. He revolutionized hip hop music during his era. There isn’t many that can put together bars like him and Rakim reminds you of that in every last one of his raps!
Amazing reaction!!!! lots of dope mcees and groups from that era that yet to be reacted too like ''SPECIAL ED - i got it made '' ... ''KOOL G RAP - road to riches''.... '' LAKIM SHABAZZ -pure righteousness '' .....''YZ -thinking of a master plan''.......''STEEZO - its my turn'' .......''CHILL ROB G - wild pitch'' ......''MC EZ & TROOP - get retarded ''......... ...in my opinion all underrated artists that deserve a listen ..... my opinion

THAT'S WHY HE HOLDS THE TITLE GOD MC RAKIM
Rappers like Rakim he was one of the best lyricist hands down!!!!!🎤🎶🎧
The remix of this song with the Bill Withers bassline from “Who Is He and And What is He to You” is SICK
The way Rakim rapped back in 1986'' 87'' was different from everybody who was on the scene at that time!🎶🔥🔥🔥😎
I like that you picked up on him not cursing.
See the look on this young lady's face? This was us back in the 80's when we heard this back then
Rakim and Chuck D for me are the definitive rhymers. Nice reaction.
YES
I was one of the people who requested this at your last Eric B and Rakim reaction -- thank you!

Straight Facts
This is old school OG hip hop at its finest!!!
"Make em clap to this" & "I know you got soul"!!! Eric B. & Rakim
I was like ten or eleven when hip hop came out in the late seventies early eighties with groups like African Baambata ( think I spelled it wrong) and Grandmaster Flash then we get to Run DMC Beastie Boys LL Cool J EPMD Rakim Big Daddy Kane etc
I could describe that experience of transition from James Brown Shalimar Luther Vandross Micheal Jackson but you'd really need a time machine to grasp the full impact
But I'll never forget around 84 or 85 ( I was like fifteen) this older guy said rap would be obsolete in four or five years
Needless to say rap is still going strong but has skeptical old heads as we're called
Well this old head just wants the newer generation to at least acknowledge the roots of hip hop but they can't
I wouldn't be surprised if in ten years most young people never heard of Tupac or Biggie let alone EPMD or Rakim but I'm that changes thanks to reactions such as yours
i love your facial expressions and locked into the song, i was in 7/8th grade nyc when this dropped and this is alll we sang everyday leaving school with the same face u had. 😂❤🎉

He was the creator of hard core hip hop which is why he is referred to as the God Emcee. He revolutionized hip hop music during his era. There isn’t many that can put together bars like him and Rakim reminds you of that in every last one of his raps!
