It’s good to be back, Happy 4 year anniversary to us and to you! We have a couple BIG projects in the works for the early part of this year including the giant overview of the Trigun manga and some other surprises fans of the podcast are already aware of. We’re planning on making 2023 a year to remember, glad to have you along for the ride. -Mike
I think it's a little of both. In the original, him being goofy was to mask his feelings. Then half way through the series, Knives and the gung ho guns, forced him to face those feelings along with making him realize that he can't save everyone. Most of the original anime was Vash paying to protect everyone (including the criminals) with his own health. No one dies but he gets hurt and demonized in the end. He also refused to face his true feelings as he likely felt that giving into them would make him more like Knives.
@@midnightaristocrat8786 That plus killing Legato finally pushed him to realize that sometimes there actually were situations where even someone with his abilities could not save everyone on both sides, which let him finally accept that he couldn't stop Knives without killing him.
@@Macrochenia Vash's goofiness was his mask, his hair, his red cloth he use it to gain attention from people so when shit happen he can distract everyone make them point their gun at him instead of killing each other to save all the life that Rem sacrificed herself for
I feel like original Trigun Vash was more emotionally mature even if he was a lot goofier. The way he looked and carried himself seemed like he had gotten used to shouldering his burdens and facinf his demons alone. Stampede Vash is younger and acts younger. He has a greater consistent sense of urgency and angsty naivety with him. The humor is there, but he doesn't use it to get through ridiculously dangerous encounters. In the first anime it seemed like he almost always had a plan and knew he would come out on top. His sense of humor made him seem more superhuman and his gunplay made him seem like more of a veteran. I loved Stampede. That's just a big difference I observed.
this is both a remake and a prequel apparently. doesnt the og trigun start after the july incident? they're also fully grown men in the old one. here they seem like young adults.
Trigun is one of the best meditations on what it takes to be a good guy. Not just a decent guy. But an actual, actively trying to do the work GOOD guy. And how much that can suck but also be rewarding.
I've said it before, and I know I'm not the only one, but Trigun is one of the best Superman-stories ever written. And it's not even about Superman. But it is a story about an OP character who so easily could kill all his enemies but holds back because it's the right thing to do. And how despite all of their powers, they can't save everyone. But damn it, they're gonna try anyways.
Oh! They brought in Milly?! I have a problem not judging books by their covers. Seeing the cg, character design, and one of my favorite characters missing was too much for me. It was such a drop in excitement too because I always want to see more Trigun. Would you say the way they brought her into the story was semi worth the wait?
Vash in Stampede feels a little more melancholy than in the original anime and it’s not a bad thing bc even if he doesn’t have that many goofy moments he still feels like Vash with how peaceful/friendly he is.
@@billylionisnotagoat But, Milly never played that big of a role in the manga. Out of the 2, Meryl was always the more important character, so naturally, Trigun Stampede is starting out by telling her story.
Came back to say YOU WERE RIGHT! The fall of JuLai with Vash vs Knives had me in tears, bro. And they ended this season of Trigun Stampede right as Vash loses his memory as Eriks and Meryl Strife is about to get paired up with out favorite newbie Millie Thompson! This may be the best Trigun material especially as a prequel to the series we remember.
@@Earth2McKay im not saying its a prequel im saying that the story being told in stampede happens before the og trigun timeline-wise since Meryl hasnt been transfered to the insurance company and Milly hasnt even been introduced
@@SamFecTunes again... She would know who vash was though. Don't over think things. No one wants the big dumb r tard girl in the anime. They prolly wrote her out cause her character was annoying and useless. An just re did the story. Added a better senior Co worker that knows what he's talking about. This is significantly better. But I do love the og Trigun
@Enki Considering the ending with him earning the 60billion bounty on his head after he destroys July. Its clearly a prequel and a retelling meshed into 1
I honestly didn’t expect much and I was pleasantly surprised. Animation, story and character wise. You can feel the weight Vash carries on his shoulders.
I hoped for much (+90% true to the original), expected decency (at least 60% true to the original), and was sorely disappointed (got 5% at most, the only similarities are essentially just doing enough to qualify as copywrite infringement if they hadn't paid to use the Trigun intellectual property rights). As a nostalgic fan of the original, it's like going to a bar and hearing they have Remy Martin XO ($225 USD a bottle), knowing they always over-hype their selection and expecting them to only have a top end quality of bottles like Paulet XO ($85 USD), and then when you order the best in the house they come out with and charge you for a drink from a Hennessey VSOP bottle ($52 USD) but you can tell on the first sip that they just filled up an empty bottle with E&J VS ($12 USD) and hoped you wouldn't notice. And while you and the other hardcore Cognac enjoyers scrunch your face at having just paid the price of the entire bottle of what you were actually served under a false name, everyone else drinking it in the bar who's never had this particular type of fine alcohol before and don't realize they're being swindled think that those who know better are just being pompous. Don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with E&J's VS. It's just not comparable to the others on the list. Especially when you're being served E&J under the name of the Hennessey brand. Same thing with Stampede. This would be a decent anime on it's own, if the writers had made their own space-western show in the same vein. But butchering the Trigun characters/backstory to make this is insulting to those who know better.
@@TheKhopesh Thats cool and all, but the original creator of Trigun is working in tandem with Stampede, and loves it. So uh, I dont know if it matters but, Im pretty sure the creator of the original story themselves would know better then the fans.
@@redhatpat hey if they don't like this masterpiece that's there lose as for us we can enjoy this as much as we want and as a fan of manga and original show for years i can proudly say studio orange delivered gold.
I personally love Stampede. I grew up with the original, and it's one of my all time favorites. I'm really happy to see the way the new series is retelling the story. But we BETTER get Best girl Millie back.
For real, Millie was my favorite and her not being in this show is really driving me away from liking it. The strong quiet girl who was a symbol to never give up hope, who wasn't afraid to make her point known when she needed too. I miss her.
I came into stampede so suspicious and I definitely had an "oh I don't like change" moment with the animation style but by episode 2 I was engrossed and I can't even notice it now, I love it. Same with the theme tune. The lack of Millie is criminal and I'm not sure I have settled on Wolfwoood yet (though him being the kind of guy who would wear loafers without socks is SUCH a good modernisation of him)
@@gdavis2bn if you keep reading I then immediately afterwards say “by episode 2 I was engrossed and I can’t even notice it now, I love it” AKA “I love the animation style” AKA “I love trigun stampede”
Im personally loving watching this as a long time fan of the original trigun. The motion during the action scenes is really brought out through the CGI and they didn't let that single boon carry the show either, they really hit it out of the park with the side characters and Vash's mysterious, saintly nature contrasting his vile reputation. Honestly, if people give it a chance, it would be a decision they wouldn't regret.
Agreed, although I grew up watching the hand drawn beauty of 80s and 90s anime and have a love for it, people are ridiculous trying to say that the CGI animation is at all worse than hand drawn. Both are beautiful in their own way, but for the action scenes, I'm CGI all the way. If you slow down older anime, frame by frame, you can see the corners cut or the imperfections/ blurring. The CGI animation is incredibly fluid, and to not have consistent camera angle changes to hide the imperfections of the animation actually allows the audience to see the entire fight.
i never watched the original trigun, but seeing stampede has def sold me on the story as a whole. also i think vash's redesign is cute lol, he basically just isn't putting a bunch of gel in his hair
Which I dislike because there was purpose to the old style of the hair in the story. It's also like changing a character's image or silhouette, like making Goku have Kpop hair.
@@Macheako OG hair cut is back at the ending for Trigun Stampede ep 12 and will be the default hair for Season 2, because Trigun Stampede is a prequel.
I was honestly hooked within the first three minutes of the first episode. I do like the og '98 version, but it's clear from the get-go that Stampede has the benefit of not only having the complete source material of the manga, but also the full backing of Trigun's creator. I really hope more people will come around and check it out because I'd hate to see another promising series get canceled prematurely, only for audiences to regret it later.
@Riccy Ticcy It still has the entire story mapped out so the team knows where and how to be faithful to the characters and in what why they can make changes while still honoring the spirit of the original manga. Stampede may be making changes, but they're thoughtful changes that follow the original intent of Trigun in terms of tone, themes, motivations, and gradual character development.
@@NeepNeepPohn It actually feels more like the later chapters of Trigun Maximum, and the backstories are closer in a lot of ways to the source material. Though cosmetically, the original series had more similarities, especially in the early episodes, Stampede is more similar in spirit, I think. Ultimately, the manga is best, and neither anime is much like it. But once I finally gave Stampede a chance, I decided I love all three versions.
Absolutely perfect take on this series. It feels like they are approaching familiar territory towards the end of this season, and it's implemented very well in the animation department!
As someone who's seen the original and read the whole manga, I've really been enjoying the new show! I was skeptical at first from the trailers, but as you said, the shot compositions make it well worth it. I hadn't considered that this may all be a prelude, and that explains a lot. I now expect Vash will get his iconic gun and everything else soon enough. And I really hope they include some of the things I loved from Maximum.
Yeah man. I really hope he gets a wardrobe more closely resembling the original in the end, and maybe a hairstyle change. Perhaps he'll lose his coat and glasses and have to pick up new ones, lol. But yeah I also hope to see some manga stuff, like Vash catching bullets with his wings. I'd like to also see him able to use his powers more without his hair turning almost completely black. Felt like for him being a plant he should have been able to do a lot more.
Trigun Maximum manga fan here, I have been following Stampede's development closely for months. The theory of July being the series climax is a popular one among fans, this will happen I can bet on it. Nightow was right, think of season 1 of Stampede as setup for bigger events to come, even the end of season one will hit hard and we will see some excellent payoffs. Stampede is loved by most Trimax fans because we are finally going to see characters and events that were never animated, the 90s anime is very dear to me but the lack of the canon and lore makes it more of a filler series now.
Yeah Trigun was actually the first anime I ever watched. And my first thought upon watching this is that it's clearly some kind of Preboot. Like it's definitely a retelling of the story, but it's also starting at an earlier point in the story. As soon as they mentioned July city I realized that they are working their way up to that event and I think that the story is going to be an interesting take on the events leading up to that point and then the way that that they handle July city and its aftermath will be the real defining point of quality for the series. But until then I'm enjoying the ride so far.
Something I've noticed is that the new series has a tendency to combine plot points/episodes and characters. I wouldn't be surprised if July and the fifth moon plot points will be merged.
They were never working up to July as a prequel. This was entirely a rewrite of the original story. Instead of adding to the story they rewrote it. It is subpar and does not respect the original work. This is basically what happened with the main star wars movies. They rewrote the original work. Unlike clone wars, Bad Batch, or Mandalorian that stayed true to the original material given. Trigun Stampede is mockery to the original work. Trying to remake it entirely instead of adding new parts to the story we already have seen.
@@geronimo5537Exactly & these Supposed Trigun fans try to say that it’s ok they even used CGI & change his hair cut & gun & take Millie out, they aren’t real fans like you and me I want respect for my show if it’s getting a reboot use 2D animation follow the manga more do not change everything it’s bs. Trigun 1998 is my 3rd favorite anime of all time.
Begging for your reaction to episode 12!! It was a fucking MASTERPIECE (honestly haven't felt so blown away by an episode of anime in ages!) - AND YOU GOT IT SPOT ON!
the original is a masterpiece. this is taking chopping it up and making something else. a good solo animation sure. a reboot of trigun it is not. doesn't respect the original anime in the slightest.
the original is a masterpiece. this is taking key parts of the original then chopping it up and making something else. a good solo animation sure. a reboot of trigun it is not. doesn't respect the original anime in the slightest.
Having finished the season. Fuggin lord tier. The full circle culmination and recentering of Vash and Knives' motivations left me ready for how they're going to go with season 2
I remember the staff stating that one of their influences was the MCU. Which actually makes a lot of sense weirdly. One thing that I don't see a lot of when talking about how the show has been restructured is that the original Trigun manga was in a magazine that had its publication cancelled about two volumes in. Before the content that would become Maximum. The Trigun '98 anime adapted that material through a massive cliffhanger similar to the end of volume 2. So a show that adapts the beginning of the manga as a prequel along the lines of something like Captain America The First Avenger aligns closer with the original manga than most might realize. Especially with Nightow's love of movies, the manga's chock full of movie references that weren't really in Trigun '98 that much. Mike's theory is definitely on the mark. If nothing else, I'm really glad the Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 debate is alive and well. Makes me nostalgic for an older era of anime that was more willing to deviate from the source material.
@@miaswapp Lol, I never put the Venom / Monev thing together. I appreciate the additional factoid! Nightow wears his influences on his sleeve so that doesn't shock me. I always remember his authors note about meeting Mike Mingola, for example, because of how much he fanboys out over his stuff.
wow! I kind of feel dumb for not realizing the show is (seemingly) playing out more like a prequel than a remake. I still miss Vash's humor because this series gets so brutal at times it's hard to keep watching without it. Thanks for such an awesome video 😉. Vash is one of my favorite characters ever, so I'm glad to hear from someone in his corner no matter what.
Its not a prequel. They are writing the characters and story entirely. If it was a prequel they would have respected original character's personality traits and background. We wouldn't see the same locations replayed or villians redesigned. No, its not a prequel as it appears. This is a retcon and rewrite of the original to suit their version of the story. Instead of respecting the story as it is and working around it. Such a shame they could have done something great. Instead we got generic.
@Geronimo553 what're you gonna do? Author is directly influencing where the anime go(according to interviews) and even states his fixing everything he hates with the original manga(while I was writing this I already finished episode 12 of tristamp and Vash already have his iconic hair,60 billion bounty, angel canon and blackhole bullets which are all in the manga, and Milly will be back in s2). And yes this is Trigun pre-july so its a direct pre-quel of triMax which is considered as the canon ending.
I feel like the new series is rushing through a lot of important stuff which might make it more difficult to understand for peeps new to the series. That aside, comparing it to western comics is probably the best way to explain it, something like Batman or Superman, where each iteration remixes things around, but keeps a lot of the core aspects. Overall, I'm enjoying the retelling so far, and just hope that whatever they have planned for the IP, they're able to fully deliver on.
#proudpatreon While I'm sad about Millie being gone. I can not abide the lack of Kuroneko. That cat was over 70% of what carried me through the original series.
I honestly think Stampede is a masterpiece of storytelling. I'm glad you mentioned how the choice to use CGI alows them to do things they couldn't do in 2D animation and it's so true. I've watched all the episodes of the new show a few times and each time I notice some new character detail in the background that they wouldn't even have bothered to do in 2D. For example in the first episode when Vash and gang are in the bar and he's still tied up, When Rosa is talking to Meryl, you see Vash in the foreground making cheesy faces at Rosa's son. Such a masterful and subtle way of showing how childlike and caring of a person Vash is.
Since the original Trigun was in my top 10 anime and I was real worried about Stampede but honestly I love what they did with it especially if you take the time to watch the intro every time it just sets you in the right mood for what the show is going for can’t wait for season 2
The CGI animation has grown on me in the last few years. Especially when implemented right. Between Arcane, Vash and a few others. It's the color and love put into it that makes it look good.
I love 90s aesthetics but I was super hype to see a new trigun and somewhere in between awe and fascination when I saw the new animation of the first episode.
Even do it has a diffrent art style and tone than the original i love it so far. cause their telling the story in a diffrent way which gives a good reason to actully watch the show.
I hadn't considered actually getting to see the July incident happen before now and my hype around this anime just increased even more. Only a few episodes in but I agree with your take that while it's different it does still feel like Trigun
For years Trigun has been amongst my favorite anime of all time, basically sharing 3rd place with Cowboy Bebop in my top 3, and though I was kinda skeptical at first, because it wouldn't be what I wanted it to be(obviously people wanted the "Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood Treatment"), but with each new trailers getting released in 2022 I got more and more excited(it also helped that I already saw Beastars, so I knew I could trust Studio Orange when it comes to creating great anime), and I even finally read the manga last year, and that quickly became my favorite manga I've read so far. And though things are different, I absolutely love Trigun Stampede so far, and out of the ones I am watching it totally is my favorite title of this season. My only skepticism may be that they rush things to much and this all will be a 12-episode, 1-season story. Just because outside of Beastars, Orange never made anime with more than 1 season. But I do hope that there will be more seasons, with season 1 having its climax with the July incident, followed up by a time skip at the beginning of season 2. Btw. since you mention American Comic Books, it should also be noted that Tatsuhiro Nightow himself is a huge fan of western comic books, so this idea of him being open to the idea of retelling stories like this, shouldn't shock anyone. It might be unusual to anime/manga, but it makes perfect sense for a Nightow IP to get this treatment. He even went so far, as made the Studio Orange crew watch a bunch of Marvel movies before they started working on Trigun Stampede. Yet a bunch of Trigun fanboys got mad at potential Marvel influences, yet for how much they seem to care about the old Trigun, they seemed to have little to no care about the guy who created it.
I have to agree about a reimagined story not being a bad thing in and of itself, especially when it's made clear that this is being done out of love for the source material rather than just disregarding it. And heck, if they had made it 1:1 with the manga, people would have complained that it was different from the 90s anime. That's exactly what happened with Sailor Moon Crystal, after all.
Seven episodes in with the eighth being released at 11:30 AM EST. I would say Trigun Stampede is an alternative retelling of Trigun that has utilized more elements of the manga than the first adaptation so far. In my opinion, the makers of Trigun Stampede have made this a prequel that will lead to further events.
I was an adult when the original Trigun aired/I watched it (hell, I'd wager my 'kid' is probably older than most people reading this). Consequently, I'm not burdened by the sense of nostalgia you get from having grown up with a series. Also, there's a lot of the stuff in the OG series that I feel doesn't resonate as well with someone who's only ever watched it as an adult, with a lot of the unnecessary goofiness/silliness and obvious, dragged out filler being a little more hard to swallow. I can't help but wonder how many and to what degree this is affecting people's ability to really objectively judge Trigun Stampede on it's own merits. There's a lot of really good stuff I see reviewers glossing over or outright ignoring about Stampede that, from a purely 'nuts and bolts' storytelling/filmmaking p.o.v., are *far* superior to the OG series. The music (my GOD the music), sound design, choreography, pacing, and cinematography being the most obvious. What's worse is hearing people gloss over these things to critique something as wholly inconsequential as how his gun looks different. It's a shame really as I feel a *really* good show is being unfairly criticized and consequently ignored.
I feel like the main draw of OG Trigun was how we got to know Vash. Instead of being told his whole story right away, it was doled out little by little over the course of the series, forcing us to tune in to get all the puzzle pieces. Here, it's pretty much one giant exposition drop in the first episode. We're not engaged as much with the character, so we don't get as invested. That said, getting rid of all the exposition makes way for all the action - and the action in Stampede absolutely kicks all the ass. I've enjoyed the series so far, and look forward to seeing where they go here.
Hey man, thanks for putting this video together. It really helped contextualize my own feelings about Stampede and my relationship to the previous anime (which I loved), the original manga (which I own), and Trigun Maximum (which I only collected the first seven volumes that were released in North America). It's funny, I was picking up the manga in college and I remember going to the comic book store with my best friend to pick up volumes of Maximum as they were released as he, ironically, was picking up the new issues of The Ultimates. Your comparison between Stampede and the previous Trigun works/adaptations to Marvel's Ultimate universe made me tweak my critical perception of the new anime. I wasn't a fan of the first few episodes for a lot of the same "this character doesn't feel like the character I enjoyed watching in the past" reasons that you covered. But there was something there. I was still compelled to watch each week. And it wasn't a hate watch; I wasn't finishing each episode and then going online to shit on it. Something felt very sincere about the new adaptation, even as it took several steps that I saw as misfires. I think I'm more interested to see where Stampede goes after watching this video and I'm more confident in my own feelings regarding what I like, what I don't like, and the fine line between apprehension and anticipation. So, all that to say: thanks dude! Thanks for forming the words that my own brain couldn't quite get right.
The original and the revision of Trigun is amazing. I cant even express how I appreciate that they even pulled off the CGI compared to other productions. I LOVED it.
The art style that they've gone with is absolutely beautiful. It's so smooth and there is so much to look at in each frame. I love the original anime but this is just as good so far.
@@drick69420exactly, the new anime looks coming from valorant where everyome looks like a kpop singer, cant understand people disliking the og design that was so unique
I can’t lie, I had no idea this was even a thing. I was hesitant at first seeing the animation style in your video but the more you talked on it the more I knew I have to check this out asap. Thank you for another great vid.
It's really sad to see people missing that this isn't a remake. In episode 3 we saw two complete moons I'm pretty sure in the original, there was only one moon with a crater, which was supposedly caused by Vash, clearly implying that Vash awakened something that destroyed one of the moons and left a crater in the other It being a prequel literally explains why the characters aren't what we expect, they aren't, the ones we see now are past ancestors

@@geronimo5537 and why are you assuming there characters are the ones we know from the previous show in any way? I have no issue seeing that these aren't even the same characters save Vash and Knives, who we know are ageless
Trigun Stampede has brought back my excitement to the franchise. Being a huge fan of the original anime, I was stoked to hear they were making a retelling. I honestly do believe that Stampede does a very great job at portraying the characters even though they are slightly different from the original. Each episode of Stampede has left me on the edge of my seat. They do an amazing job of explaining the story before the episodes take place, so that those who haven't seen the original arent confused. Me being a seasoned Trigun fan, I have to be careful explaining things to my friend who is a newbie in the Trigun fandom, so the story speaks for itself here. Really what I'm trying to say that Studio Orange is doing a fantastic job and for those who are thrown off by CGI anime are really missing out.
I’m someone who has never watched the OG Trigun and I absolutely loved stampede, the story is great, I cried so hard when Roberto died since he was my favourite character. The Cgi was great too, definitely gonna watch season 2 if it comes out.
Thank you for being the first reviewer that I've seen of this who has actually read the manga!!!! The other people I've seen talk about this so far haven't, and it shows.😮💨 I'm really enjoying this new version personally, and I'm someone who has physical copies of the entire manga, original anime, all osts, and the art books.
Crazy how spot on you were about Meryl's character development (minimal spoilers) during what is panning out to be the July incident, I hope you are right about the return of Millie as well
It was obvious af, July wasn't destroyed, there is no Milly, Vash is different, new unseen characters, pacifism vibe is not pushed to the absurd, gun is different, everything is different and instant conflict with Knives in episode 3. All of that would imply it's a prologue. It wasn't so hard really. I am just glad i wasn't the only one who gave a show it's chance believing it's a prologue to original story to build up on it, to fix on many mistakes of original because it was lacking of composition and world building. Now this is indeed a Trigun i expected it to be. And i expect it to be much better than original. I just hope that this risk with prologue won't make it harder to sell it.
@MrZlocktar I hope so too. I was never like a true trigun fan, I watched part of it growing up but it was a bit before my time but I absolutely ADORE tristamp, so much that I'm actually going to go back and watch 98 too. I saw another video of someone obviously chugging nostalgia cope telling ppl not to watch tristamp bc its not the same, and he said that they shouldn't have even used the trigun IP and just written their own story. he was literally pissed ab vash's hair LOL and posted the video before the season was even done, bitching about how much cooler old vash was and that tristamp vash shouldn't have had his hair changed if there was no reason for it lol
Interesting take on the fan-divide (people who've only watched the first anime but who haven't seen the manga not liking Stampede vs. manga-readers who love it). Once I discovered the anime, Trigun became like, my LIFE for a while and I have a collection of the entire manga (Dark Horse translation), plus a few Japanese volumes that I can't read, but my fiance' got one of them signed by Nightow at a convention for me as a gift...heh. But, yeah, Stampede is much more in the manga-vein, darker, more serious. I do think it goes even a little more somber in tone at certain points as the manga retained some goofy humor despite going...just super-dark. Vash seems a little more obvious about his depression in Stampede (not that he doesn't have it in the other versions, he just hides more). Milly is coming back in the second season when / if it gets made, so calm down everyone. This leaves me with only one major disappointment: The Bad Lads raid just kind of came and went. I didn't get to see Brilliant Dynamites Neon yet. I love B.D.N! Just an amazing over the top minor villain who would look SO DAMN AWESOME in this CGI style! The animation is doing so well with lighting and neon elements and it's like... you missed THE GUY! Please bring him around for Season 2 someway, somehow! As someone who hangs out in the fandom on tumblr... there ARE fans new to the series brought in by Stampede who are discovering the old anime and the manga - there is a lot of manga-scanslation out there and by popular demand, Dark Horse might be re-releasing their English translation in print soon. So, yeah, old school fans, don't whine, it's actually bringing in new fans to discover the old media! I feel like a wise old fandom-grandma right now telling the new fans of neat things they will discover. Also laughing at their tears and pain, as one does for a series that looks kind of goofy but gets really serious.
I fell in love with the old anime. I honestly felt that Trigun was one of the most overlooked series I've come across. Watching the first season of Trigun Stampede, I was blown away! So much more depth, so many more concepts that they explored in much cooler and deeper ways! I'm ecstatic about seeing the new season!
11:30 Oh so so close... Watching this after season 1, it's amazing to see how objective you were in your critique about this new Trigun. Instead of being quick to write it off, you saw the potential in it and how it works with the old Trigun. Impressive stuff!
I honestly love Trigun Stampede, seeing Orange push CG anime once again with some genuinely awesome Keyframe work and pose favoring animation is so refreshing. While I do love the original, it does miss alot of the stuff from the manga due to airing before it was fully completed (I believe?), so seeing Stampede not only reinvent the world of Trigun but also reintroduce alot of lost character, including unseen members of the Gung-Ho Guns is so nice and kinda surreal. Johnny Yong-Bosch has been just doing a victory lap in 2022-23, returning for Ichigo and now Vash, his first voice role nearly 20 years later, is such a treat.
I started with Trigun Stampede and I just finished watching your video about the manga and am quite surprised how Stampede managed to stick so closely to those major storybeats and themes. Also watching Trigun rn and can definitely see the massive differences between shows. Yet at the same time, I simply like both.
I love it. Vash is that unexpected hero with solid convictions and tries as hard as he can to stick to them. I still see Vash in the new one. that was used as a test subject along with Knives. I agree there are some changes from the original but they're good especially from the Troubles of his youth. And the landscape of everything is absolutely gorgeous. One of my favorite Parts in it is when Vash has to reload very cool and when we finally get to see him without his jacket and shirt and see all the horrible wounds he sustained over the years.
oh my gosh, thanks for much for this video. Ive only been in the Trigun fandom since Stampede came out, and I love it and the og anime to bits, both for very different reasons. And it just feels so unfair to Stampede of how many people treat it. Comparing it to the og is one thing, but immediately writing it off because it's not the same is just plain unfair.
As someone who Never watched the original Trigun, I loved this anime and it got me interested in watching the original (which I wasn't before) And your predictions sounded good, but I just wouldn't want him to change his hair cut, I prefer his new haircut
@@thurenspascal1581 I agree, the the old style was already a stretch in a space western, but making vash's design even more polished looks weird like he's a K-pop singer in a wasteland for who's lived centuries. But I wonder if they'll add the grittiness from the manga where his hair changes style AND color as the story progresses.
In ep 12 they kinda tie everything to the beginning of the og show, with the July incident, the introduction of millly and "eriks". Also vash puts his hair up again
Going to watch this tonight but wanted to give some engagement now. Me and my partner have been watching Trigun alongside Stampede, pacing out the episodes but we're hooked very hard on Trigun and about to finish it probably this weekend. Meanwhile were enjoying the Stampede version a lot, and with the knowledge of Trigun in us, we're excited to see how Stampede pieces things together. Love and Peace
I can't say I'm sold on Stampede, but I will continue to watch it, my main gripe with it is that I adore the pacing of the Anime, the "whacky western comedy adventures of Vash and friends" as a first half while teasing some mysteries was great IMO, and obviously, Legato being the embodiment of, second half begins, tonal shift, is a great character introduction/story beat. Additionally I miss the gunplay of the anime. But Knives' introduction in Stampede is amazing, really maked him stand out as a terrifying inhuman foe. It feels like the antagonists are the ones who got the biggest improvements in general. Finally, I have no clue how people can just say: "It's CGI, therefore it's bad" when it's handled by Studio Orange, their work on Land of the Lustrous and Beastars is a masterclass on CGI anime, and Stampede clearly is their best work yet.
You tell me that Trigun is getting a remake that doesn't follow the plot of Maximum, I groan. You tell me it's being done by Studio Orange, I moan. (good definition)
I just binged the original Trigun and did feel it lacked depth to the villains but Vash and Meryl and Millie and Wolfwood were still very endearing, ❤the best part of the series. I rly like the style of Stampede but it does feel faster in that I don’t t feel as attached to Wolfwood and Roberto, but I like how they delve more into the lore of Vash and the plants which the original anime talked like, absolutely nothing about. I wasn’t sure if when they said “plants” they meant “power plants” or like a literal “ plant” plant. 😅 Kind of right on both ends. I look forward to your Trigun timeline video because I want to know where this Trigun Maximum fits in. 🎉
I know from the podcast that you guys have been loving it so I'll be surprised if this video says "no way." My brother and I actually watched the original for the first time recently and it happened to coincidentally line up right before stampede started (I honestly had not planned for it to be that way since I thought it had already aired) so my brother had us watch it and needless to say the both of us have felt very differently... honestly I had gotten a similar sentiment from what I've been seeing online so I am surprised that you guys were so into it (same with your thoughts on Vinland Saga's new season but for opposite reasons), but everything can always be appealing to someone. That's the beauty of different opinions.
So much of the criticisms I've seen online from people honestly feel like people are looking for a reason to dismiss the show, like people are going, "Welp, I watch the first ten minutes and I can confidently say that I was right because I'm always right-MY CHILDHOOOOOOD!!!" I've been watching people's reactions to the show on UA-cam and it's the newcomers that I've been most interested in because so many of the people who have seen the original basically said, "Man the first episode of Stampede spoils _everthing!"_ but from what I can tell, it's not like the newcomers pieced everything together after watching the opening sequence.
Vash's hair and coat style change, the lack of glowing glasses on vash, the way vash was introduced and the pacing before episode 5 really made it hard for me to watch at first, but it's getting better imo. I just hope that later down the line we can actually get some badass vash scenes that were similar to the ones in the original anime.
Also (Spoilers) I REALLY hope Roberto doesn't get killed off; because given that he uses the derringer and I know that meryl will use the derringers later on, I really hope meryl doesn't use the derringers to remember him because he died. I'd prefer if she used it as a way to show she's Roberto's apprentice, or something like that.
@@cmf1402 I'm coming here from the future. Spoilers WOW. So that happened. but even so, if I had to like the way that it happened. I'm satisfied with the way that it did. Roberto acknowledged her, which is a huge step, and then gets her to make a choice.
@@cmf1402 lol I get it. It wasn't the cleanest way to do it, but it was sweet the way he finally said Meryl's full name. But it seems that we're moving closer to the July incident and then the post story where the original anime was.
@@cmf1402 (future predictions and might be spoilers) they might kill him off to make meryl and vash to have character development, also because i have never seen his character in the original. i am getting ready for that. he is a walking death flag to me.
So, as this anime ended... and your prediction was pretty spot on. I loved Roberto "im too old for this shit" yet still, he put his neck on the line for Merryl every single time. Gotta save the rookie idealist from getting killed. What a dad. And i've never watched (nor read) original - i was very intrigued of what it had to offer.
I knew he was gonna die but man I got attached to Roberto. 😔 He sticked with Meryl despite wanting to leave and not be in danger, gotta protect the rookie.
Thanks for the video. A few days ago, I saw it was on crunchy roll and was curious if it was a remake, a continuation, or what. As someone who saw the original and loved it (Vash is my favorite character design in anime/media), I'm glad you made a video of it. I'm even more intrigued and as to what this new version represents and what it can add to the 90s version and how it can build on Vash character.
"if you're one of the few people who have read the entirety of the manga" bro I own all of it in English xD. But seriously, the 98 Anime is one of my favorite shows of all time. And I'm loving Stampede. I always advocated for a reboot that combined elements of the anime and Maximum with a reworked pacing, since every version of Trigun up to now was screwed in some way on that front. Been watching Stampede since the day it started, and I really hope it gets at least a full 24 episode run. Thanks for the video.
I've only watched a few episodes of Stampede, but so far aim really enjoying it. It's dark but funny, Vash feels familiar but different from the original anime, and the other changes I've noticed feel good for Stampede. I watched the OG anime throughout and absolutely loved it, but I still like Stampede as its own story and entity. It's Trigun, amplified and coming out guns blazing this time.
i hope your prediction is right and this is like a prequel season before the original run, story beats and we get more of a familiar story but with their own spin and direction.
Trigun is my absolute favorite IP. The 98 anime isn't perfect but so good. The Manga is so close to perfect but I want to see things in motion and some parts of the anime honestly did it better. Stampede is doing some legit awesome stuff. It now feels like a more practical world which I miss the 80%western 20% sci fi for Stampede's inverse but I love it and I haven't been disappointed so far. I'm hoping Milley pulls the hope Wolfwood rarely expressed in the anime and Manga. "Women are some kinda miracle ".
Welcome back, was just telling someone about your amazing Outlaw Star video recently! I think for me, visually, audio wise..., fluidity of motion... it's amazing! It's hard not to gawk at it because of just how smooth the execution is! I think so far, my friction comes from there not really feeling like a flow to each episodes story, it keeps feeling like it doesn't really hit a stride, or that it locks into the story the actual episode is trying to tell. Not sure about how that compares to the original series, but here I just keep feeling like it's interrupting itself mid sentence? If that makes sense... I'm absolutely bowled over on the quality as it relates to literally everything else about it, I just can't seem to find the flow state of the story. Things just kind of happen, and then don't, and then switch tracks, or things are glossed over that felt like they needed some more love. When Wolfwood joins them, it's never stated he is, or at least not clearly, and he just suddenly knows about their problems and it's unclear when and how that deal went down for instance, just felt like there should be some narrative around that to seal the gap. Might just be a byproduct of trying to fit things into a limited number of episodes? I hope it catches it's stride because it's so stylish and beautiful! Crossing my fingers it takes off and we get to see how this plays out and evolves over time.
I was a fan of Trigun since 98 and I largely think Stampede is a fascinating show..but IT COMPLETELY has went over my head that the timeline of the stories occurs at different points! Now it all makes way more sense. Yea people are not familiar with the story, and I think that hasn't been explained..even for someone like me who has always liked the property.
Huge fan of the original but the new series is fantastic. I think only Wolfwood hasn’t quite landed for me yet and I think it’s because he’s in it too early and overlaps a lot with Roberto who gets more focus. Roberto though is a very marked man and I’d put down a solid wager that Vash is going to carry the responsibility for his death in July for a long long time.
It’s good to be back, Happy 4 year anniversary to us and to you! We have a couple BIG projects in the works for the early part of this year including the giant overview of the Trigun manga and some other surprises fans of the podcast are already aware of.

I always felt that Vash's goofiness in the original anime was there to mask his true feelings
I felt it to be more of a refusal to face them and mature as a person until he actually went off to his final confrontation with Knives.
@@Macrochenia Vash's goofiness was his mask, his hair, his red cloth he use it to gain attention from people so when shit happen he can distract everyone make them point their gun at him instead of killing each other to save all the life that Rem sacrificed herself for
@@Macrochenia That's why the build up of the whole series was good. They didn't really show knives until we NEEDED to see him.
@@gothxm Yes. It’s a bit different as it’s what I call an adaptational prequel which is a prequel but also for the new universes story
Trigun is one of the best meditations on what it takes to be a good guy. Not just a decent guy. But an actual, actively trying to do the work GOOD guy. And how much that can suck but also be rewarding.
You hit the nail on the head.

@@billylionisnotagoat But, Milly never played that big of a role in the manga. Out of the 2, Meryl was always the more important character, so naturally, Trigun Stampede is starting out by telling her story.

@@KuraudoSutoraifu7 Whats the problem? The story leading up to the July incident is sooo good and the characters are AMAZING

I miss her.
And it's movie quality
It's a cheap nockoff of the original and Netflix animators need to commit Subaru
Millie is definitely coming, she’s mentioned in ep.12. Season one was just some character development for Meryl, and I loved it!

I came into stampede so suspicious and I definitely had an "oh I don't like change" moment with the animation style but by episode 2 I was engrossed and I can't even notice it now, I love it. Same with the theme tune.
The lack of Millie is criminal and I'm not sure I have settled on Wolfwoood yet (though him being the kind of guy who would wear loafers without socks is SUCH a good modernisation of him)
The fact you're stuck on design is lame as fuck. As a result you're missing out on a great series with a better story than the 98 anime.

I feel like the CGI has ruined the fight scenes its horribly bland nd Vash just isn’t Vash

Actually Teddy, with that style, it's probably the same amount of gel lmao
OG hair cut is and will always be Vash The Stampede for me

@@Macheako OG hair cut is back at the ending for Trigun Stampede ep 12 and will be the default hair for Season 2, because Trigun Stampede is a prequel.
I was honestly hooked within the first three minutes of the first episode. I do like the og '98 version, but it's clear from the get-go that Stampede has the benefit of not only having the complete source material of the manga, but also the full backing of Trigun's creator. I really hope more people will come around and check it out because I'd hate to see another promising series get canceled prematurely, only for audiences to regret it later.
I 'll definetly watch it for free. Hell, I won't probably won't even watch it lol
How does it benefit from having the manga if it's not following the manga in any way, shape, or form?
@Riccy Ticcy It still has the entire story mapped out so the team knows where and how to be faithful to the characters and in what why they can make changes while still honoring the spirit of the original manga. Stampede may be making changes, but they're thoughtful changes that follow the original intent of Trigun in terms of tone, themes, motivations, and gradual character development.
@@alucard197 Well you are missing out on a lot then. Its been a crazy good show.
@@NeepNeepPohn It actually feels more like the later chapters of Trigun Maximum, and the backstories are closer in a lot of ways to the source material.

Considering Nightow's love for Marvel and DC comics, it's a good fit.

Kuroneko didn’t appear all that much in the manga. It’s possible she’ll still turn up, just not every episode
Honestly Millie can't just run away from this. Wolfwood as a character would not work without her.

I wish there were more classic anime that got rebooted with cutting edge art direction like this
I honestly think Stampede is a masterpiece of storytelling.
Land of the lustrous has some well done CG

I love 90s aesthetics but I was super hype to see a new trigun and somewhere in between awe and fascination when I saw the new animation of the first episode.
Even do it has a diffrent art style and tone than the original i love it so far. cause their telling the story in a diffrent way which gives a good reason to actully watch the show.
Just watched the lest episode of the season. You called it, dead to rights, 100%.
I feel the same way you do from uncertainty to enjoying the addition to the universe, but clearly not a replacement
I like how it takes more inspiration from the manga than the original anime
I hadn't considered actually getting to see the July incident happen before now and my hype around this anime just increased even more. Only a few episodes in but I agree with your take that while it's different it does still feel like Trigun
I can’t believe you predicted the ending accurately to the T
I love that this video EXACTLY predicted the ending of s1
I have to agree about a reimagined story not being a bad thing in and of itself, especially when it's made clear that this is being done out of love for the source material rather than just disregarding it. And heck, if they had made it 1:1 with the manga, people would have complained that it was different from the 90s anime. That's exactly what happened with Sailor Moon Crystal, after all.
I would rather it adapt maximum
No one complained when Alchemist Brotherhood came out, why are you referencing oppinions of people who do not matter like yourself?
@@DoesNotInhale that’s like one example. Sailor Moon is a counter example to that

You were right on literally everything you predicted would happen at the end of Season 1. Nice
I agree. This feels like a prequel.
Coming back after watching episode 12 and knowing it was actually a prequel:
I love the wild arms 3 music in the background. A persons warmth is a classic
The original and the revision of Trigun is amazing. I cant even express how I appreciate that they even pulled off the CGI compared to other productions. I LOVED it.
As an old otaku from way back i know animation can never be like it was but this animation wasnt bad, it had some cool animation and mocap.
100% there with you. I don't hate the cgi shows but I really miss the fully hand drawn stuff sometimes.

It's really sad to see people missing that this isn't a remake. In episode 3 we saw two complete moons
I'm pretty sure in the original, there was only one moon with a crater, which was supposedly caused by Vash, clearly implying that Vash awakened something that destroyed one of the moons and left a crater in the other
It being a prequel literally explains why the characters aren't what we expect, they aren't, the ones we see now are past ancestors

The other people I've seen talk about this so far haven't, and it shows.😮💨
I'm really enjoying this new version personally, and I'm someone who has physical copies of the entire manga, original anime, all osts, and the art books.
Crazy how spot on you were about Meryl's character development (minimal spoilers)
during what is panning out to be the July incident, I hope you are right about the return of Millie as well
I didn't realize this had been posted before ep12 aired and you started predicting what happens beat for beat lmao
I love the original for it's amazing 2D animation but the new one is gorgeous in it's own way!
Just watched the season finale and then came across your video and holy heck your predictions are pretty spot on

Oh so so close...
And you were correct, congrats! July does get destroyed
Didn't even know Trigun was a show. I just saw this cool dune like move and thoought "damn that looks cool" and it's probably my fav of the season.
As someone who Never watched the original Trigun, I loved this anime and it got me interested in watching the original (which I wasn't before)
And your predictions sounded good, but I just wouldn't want him to change his hair cut, I prefer his new haircut
I feel the opposite, I love his old look and this new one feels just too plain and makes him look like a teenager.
Dang he hit the setup for S2 right on the nail wow
Yall predicted the entire plot, I couldn't stop thinking about it when I was watching the last two eps😭 That was crazy haha
This man predicted everything in the fucking spot your insane
Stampede and OG are wonderful; comparing the different Trigun stories to different versions of comic book superheroes is spot on.

I just came back finishing the final episode and your theory has INCREDIBLY AGED WELL
Trigun Stampede is a fun time overall. I like how Knives and Wolfwood are deeper characterized in this new version.
i hope your prediction is right and this is like a prequel season before the original run, story beats and we get more of a familiar story but with their own spin and direction.
Crossing my fingers it takes off and we get to see how this plays out and evolves over time.
pplease make another video like this now that the season is finished
I watched Trigun and Trigun Stampede all the way through and thoroughly enjoyed both.
At least JOhnny Yong BOsch is voicing Vash once more in the reboot instead of a new person ;)
Watching this in English with Jonny Yong Bosch returning as Vash ,gives me the since of nostalgia I need to make me love the show
Monev's redesign is frickin amazing.
