    I must admit, I love that they added the orchestra, but the original had more charm and their voices were clearer and more upfront in the mix. At times the vocals sound a bit disjointed from the orchestra here. I adore this song tho. The subtlety and raw passion expressed in their voices are captivating. The entire song plays out like a little story. The crescendo at the end from 4:22 building up to the ending gives me goosebumps every time. Their voices compliment each other so well. Freddie jumped between delicate to raw power effortlessly and Caballe had this buttery, wave like tone throughout.
    I can remember when I first heard it too when it was re-released for the Olympics in 1992. I had only just got into Queen shortly before as a 13-year-old. I had only heard Bohemian Rhapsody when it was re-released after his death in 1991 on Top of the Pops and the next day my dad gave me his Queen Greatest Hits 1 vinyl record... I was hooked. I can even remember the songs I liked in order. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy was a favourite, but I thought it was "Ooooh la vaaaa boy, what you doing tonight...".
    Anyway, for Barcelona, my dad shouted me into the living room to see it on TOTP and I remember nearly crying as it was so emotional and impactful. I really hoped it would hit Number 1, but back then number 2 was great. I then borrowed the Barcelona cassette from a friend.... never gave him it back.

      @@xlionyx Thank you for your nice comment, long posts probably take up too much time to read 😒. Queen has played a big part in my life, especially as a youngster. A lot of my fondest memories involve them and especially Freddie. I was listening to La Japonaise reaction videos funnily enough just the other day. Another masterpiece of emotion.

    I can't remember which documentary it was that i watched, but on there they said that Freddie wanted an orchestra originally, but was advised against it, because the record company thought it wouldn't sell or would put buyers off if he used an orchestra. Absolute shame in my opinion, especially as he isn't around to hear his original vision.

      It didn't stop the song selling well and even hit no2 in the UK when the 1992 Olympic Games took place in Barcelona

    The original recording had synthesizers and only 2 real violins, 1 cello, 1 french horn, and 2 percussion players. Even though it was meant to sound totally symphonic (and no one really knew the difference), the whole 1987 sound was totally synthetic.

  • @ravimusicuk
    @ravimusicuk 11 років тому +1

    Well, when Luciano Pavarotti first heard of the idea he didn't like it at all. I think he told Monserrat [or "Montsy" as Fred would call her] that she was dumbing down opera by doing this collaboration. I think it was the success of it [and quite possibly the fact that it was a true collaboration, rather than two worlds colliding and cancelling eachother out] that swung him round. This version sounds wonderful, but I can totally understand why Freddie went with synths the first time round.

    • @cfr6980
      @cfr6980 5 років тому

      Till i know, that isn't the story. Nowadays i am watching a lot of documentaries because Montserrat death, and they talk about a colaboration that comes from... admiración (in spanish, my english is limitated)

    Why did he use synths the first time round?

  • @uk285
    @uk285 11 років тому

    I think it was because they barley did the song before the olympic deadline and didn't have time to get a orchestra set up

    I am not delusional. There is a huge difference, If you cannot tell the difference between keyboards/synthesizers and a 80 piece orchestra then like I say, get your ears cleaned out.

  • @ravimusicuk
    @ravimusicuk 11 років тому

    I don't know exactly why [obviously, because I'm not Freddie or anyone associated with him, haha!] but I'm guessing it could be because Mr Bad Guy [his first attempt at a solo project] didn't do so well, and he didn't want to put so much into something that could, potentially, be the last piece of musical work he'd ever work on. Especially after his original record company hated the idea and paid him a tonne of money to go away and take it somewhere else.
