the scary thing was monokuma was a human penguin that had half of his skin missing before he was redesigned into a bear o_O
I really like when you cover these darker, less Nintendo-y games! I'm always curious about projects that seem weird and unconventional, and how they got approved. Perhaps it might be good to look into a game like Nier: Automata that saved its studio?
Sure, I'll check it out! I've been trying to keep a sort of mix of games on this channel lately - Nintendo ones, ones from other studios, plus some indie games too. If people enjoy these slightly darker ones, then I'll definitely cover more in the future! Thanks for the feedback!
Ah yeah sorry, I don't mean to imply that I'm suddenly going to do a 180 on the channel's direction or anything! My main focus is definitely still with Nintendo games - they're the large large majority of what I play, and what I find interesting as well. Just as a quick example: my next videos are about Kid Icarus, then Kid Icarus: Uprising, then Cuphead if I work quickly, then BoxBoy. So, mainly Nintendo/Nintendo focused, but a few non-Nintendo ones here and there as well. I hope that clears it up a little!
These development stories are so fun to watch, much preferred over reading translated famitsu articles.
This was pretty good! The Distrust system seems to have made it into Danganronpa V3 which is super neat. I wish it was featured throughout the other games though. I'm interested if you're going to do a development history for Ace Attorney seeing you're doing a lot of Visual Novel games.
Yes, definitely! In fact, making a video about Ace Attorney was the inspiration behind this channel, since it's my favourite game series! I've got the script written and voiceover recorded, but it's pretty long and I've been putting off editing it for a while, haha. I would say expect it in the not too distant future!
Can you do another video looking into the development insights of Danganronpa V3? It had innovated itself in many ways, most crucially the amazing UI, and I've love to hear more about that.
I would love to at some point, but right now I haven't played that one yet! I've actually only played Trigger Happy Havoc - I'd definitely like to play the other entries, but I'm waiting for a good chunk of time to play them in. But I'd definitely consider doing more Danganronpa content in future!

If the Danganronpa trilogy for PS4 is any indication, Danganronpa Ultra Dispair Girls is kind of skippable. It's very interesting from the plot revelations from 1 & 2, but the game play is totally odd. It's a shooter. Nothing you learn from the game setting, or story has much of anything to do with Danganronpa V3. Most of all just looking at the trailer or box art spoils a bunch of D1 and D2.
As a person who generally avoids horror games because of gore, the Danganronpa series is about the edge of what I can tolerate for mindless violence. *(it really dose help that blood is not red) But I have really enjoyed my time with the 3 main games. They are best played with a friend. And I played the first one with my mom over a few weeks. (She was a big "Forensic Files" fan, and enjoys Phoenix Wright, and Professor Layton, and she enjoyed the Game even though her new favorite character each chapter died almost every time. Lol)

Danganronpa changed the way I look at games, anime, visual novels, and movies. Before I used to be into murder mysteries. Now it's the only thing I watch. And anything that doesn't have blood, I don't want to watch it. I'm kinda sad that the games are over with, but I haven't watched the anime yet so I'll spend my time watching that.

Interesting that Kodaka had originally planned that to be the case, given that anyone who's played the first game knows that the fact that one of the suspects is hidden from the player until the latter half of the game is a huge part of the story.
1:52 One interesting carryover into the final games is that one of the game's tracks is called "DISTRUST", in all caps. It's a neat little touch. It was in every game too up until DRV3, where "Living in Lazy Parallel World" replaced it, being a mash-up of a couple songs'.
2:16 Interesting that that voting screen wasn't used until Danganronpa V3. In fact, the player doesn't even vote at the end of the trials until that game in the series. Nice touch that they brought it back though.

Huh, look at that. One game I have not yet played to completion.. In fact, I watched the anime for this before actually trying the game! As I'm more of a Nintendo fan myself, I can see why this one never actually made its way to me. Still, I recently got it on Steam...I should try finishing it.
It's definitely not for everyone - heck, it's pretty different from my normal type of game - but I enjoyed it a lot! If you have it on Steam, I think it's definitely worth another try!
This was really fascinating to learn about, Danganronpa is one of my favorite series and I had no idea about it's development, great work as always Thomas.

I've never played this game. Is it good?
I mean, I think so! But I did make a whole video about it, so I'm a little biased... It has trial segments sort of similar to Ace Attorney, but with more "action" to them, I guess? Idk, it's a little hard to describe. It's also a lot more visual novel-y than something like Ace Attorney, so if you're not into that then maybe this isn't your cup of tea. It's £15 on Steam, but if you're not willing to spend that much, you could always see if it goes on sale, maybe.

I hate comparisons but honestly you do a better a job than DYKG and I unsubed to them because they cover the same games Mario and Sonic. I hope you get big and make more videos on not very known games. Honestly with Danganronpa I just wished there was multiple branches like other Visual Novels instead of one path.

Also I just realized that the game's timeline doesn't make sense. Byakuya died in Danganronpa 2 but was alive in Ultra Despair Girls. But then again, Ultra Despair Girls is a spin-off to Danganronpa 1, so the timeline goes from the 1st one to Ultra Despair Girls to the 2nd one.
the byakuya in danganronpa 2 is not actually byakuya, it’s the ultimate impostor who’s acting like byakuya

I guess now I can see why it feels so jumbled, it's the main reason I hate the game, they over explain certain parts and rush through others. its hard to tell what you're actually supposed to do since they go over and over the same points. it's a shame cause distrust looks like it would've worked way better!
