- Опубліковано 17 кві 2019
- 2017's fiendishly difficult platformer, Cuphead, proved to be hugely successful, with astounding sales and review scores alike. But how did this game come to be? Well, to find out we'll take a look all the way back to the childhoods of two ordinary-seeming game developers, and track the game's progress from original idea to finished game. Come, let us journey through Cuphead's Development History.

"Cuphead on Switch, now you can be frustrated both on home and on the go!", perfect slogan
It's a rage game so players can feel their pain from developing the game
Now doctor's appointment waiting rooms are frustrating for a completely different reason!
Same with dark souls
"What's a matter, suck at video games?"
@@TheVideoMaker1999 "Timmy, you just gotta get good"
*likes nintendo games, her story, obra dinn, cuphead, and overcooked* tom are you me
Well, I only heard about Obra Dinn and Her Story from GMTK, so I think I've just been influenced by your videos!
thanks for the link to this video, was certainly interesting
No, you guys just both have great tastes in video games :D
you guys should collab some day
Albin Grahn Who is that in your profile picture? I’ve seen you in so many comment sections and I just need to know. I’ve subbed to you so I know the next time I see you
CORRECTION: Cuphead was released on the 29th of September, not December.
Thomas Game Docs Ok, then
Thomas Game Docs
Heh they do sound the same
do you remember the 29th night of september?
Ok boomer
Hey, that's the birthday of my little sister, that's crazy!
The fact they didn't set their run and gun game in an elementary school is probably for the best.
Oh god now that i think of it-
*america simulator*
That would be cool tbh
I mean,do you REALLY think they would make a bunch of teen ages doing a massacre? Lol
It would probably be a metaphorical representation of the struggles of growing up and the school routine, there are a lot of possibilities for a set like this
Okuyasu Nijimura school shooting
No it would have been better
The thing I've always found interesting about Cuphead is that because of the old 1930's style animation it makes it seem like a game that already existed. There's a line from the movie "Inside Llewyn Davis" about folk music, "If it was never new, and it never gets old, then it's a folk song." That's how this game makes me feel.
The reason MS wants to make it on the Switch is probably to show sony that being multi-console friendly is a good thing, especially them making sure multiplatform play is on the switch and xbox, as well as the bedrock PC edition
This partnership between Microsoft and Nintendo is very noticable. Some other Xbox Exclusives got ported to the Switch.
Daniel Dandalii yeah
Anime sucks
@@LL-hf6bi I agree but there is no need to tell that to everyone who enjoys it
@@LL-hf6bi Why post that? Get your comment somewhere, it's just completely unrelated.
“They knew they’d have to scale back...”
“...scale back...”
“...scale back...”
*cut to a million pieces of paper of animation being drawn*
“...scale back...”
That's what - to me - is the most frustrating. Not only is it difficult to unleash the creative potential that is needed for all the ideas and "doing the work", scaling back endlessly, original ideas can no longer be incorporated, which, in the worst case, can cause the project to die ... again ... like the many others before.
Then I knew: I would not become a game designer. And it's okay.
The 1930's art style seems to be a very popular aesthetic in games now a days with, Skullgirls, Bendy and the Ink Machine, and now Cuphead...I wonder if 1940's aesthetic is next?
Ooh, that would be interesting! I'm trying to think what was created in the 40's... Slinkies? Frisbees?
@@ThomasGameDocs Slinkies were made in the 40's?! You learn something everyday.
How would a 40's aesthetic be different than a 30's aesthetic?
40’s is the same actually
@@logat1847 Pretty much the same. Except with a lot more WWII references.
i can’t believe they released cuphead on tesla
on what?
@@beeternity On the Tesla. Like, the car. There literally is a version of cuphead that is running on the Tesla's onboard computer.

Great episode!! I haven't played Cuphead yet, but now that it's on Switch I might. The visuals are incredible, indeed. I'm really happy to know the development history. Thanks for this video, I think it's one of your best yet! :-)
Thank you so much! That's really kind!
I have a switch.
@@CTGReviews no, you do not.
We can thank Microsoft and Nintendo finally forming a bond
Possibly big Microsoft games could get on the switch
Wow, I can tell your videos take a lot of effort. Keep it up, dude.
Screw cuphead. If I don't get a HD remake of Grandma pickins I'm going to stop playing games.
lol
I’ll make one
Yaas grandma pickins
I don't know, why UA-cam decided to recommend one of your videos to me a few month ago, but I have to admit that I'm always exited, when I see a new video of yours in my inbox.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. As an editor I appreciate all the effort that went into this. You got a well deserved sub and may there be many more to come!!! Happy Gaming!!!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your support!
As one from Saskatchewan Canada, I am super proud of this game!! Way too tough for me to play but I’m still proud that the creators were from Regina Saskatchewan. 😁

I love this!!! Could you maybe do a development history on Night In The Woods? Its an amazing game and i feel like there's a hidden story on its development that light hasn't been shed yet.
I have the Animator's Survival Kit! An amazing book
5:57 Does any buddy noticed something odd maybe like something that looks exactly like cup head and mug man
I got it when it released on the switch. It's awesome.
Great vid and all, but:
No talk at all about how the soundtrack was made?

I have lost to wally warbles more than grimm, DAMN BIRD!
Its so crazy how a simple dream can come so far
These people worked so hard
They learned new techniques all from scratch and with such a small team too!
They had to work so hard to make this happen, and I really admire that
They deserve every bit of success they have
Im so happy for them
Aahh max fleischer the real first animator that used synchronised sound first (and made betty boop, bimbo and even a superman look a like)
buying for the Switch to get frustrated on home and on the go as well
*(more than that, looking at those amazing animations I've never dreamt of seeing in a game)*
You’re videos are great you deserve much more subscribers
"(difficulty was) High but not at all unfair"
Takahashi: (confused screaming)
here is a secret of the game. they still had a problem. PIRATES. so they added spooky music titled 666. this can make you feel guilty for what you have done. and when you get to die house 1. king dice jumpscares you and kills you.

"kappa with a top hat" hmm...
does that remind you of a unused boss in the game
yup
I love the paper arts and crafts style of these videos
Wait... Omeega?
Imagine joking about using 1930’s characters in a video game and then years later Nintendo goes “Switch”
*when Thomas said kappa type character with a top hat i thought tortimer R.I.P.*
i love the game art style and music but is too hard for me i can't complete it i gave up in the middle
"Little green guy" so say? Well that awfully sounds like the unused Cuphead character "The Light". So dose the kappa in the hat.
You know, Sense I happen to be a cartoonist and a puppeteer, I find cuphead very inspiring!
Your bye at the end is so cute
this video came out 2 days before I got my switch

I played it on the switch for the first time. It is so awesome and difficult but it is also funny. It has a really weird type of humor in it😂

Oh boy! So, I was pretty dang interested in Cuphead when it was announced, but I was had that it was being released on a platform I was not at all interested in! And while it was also coming to PC, games on this platform hardly keep me as engaged as console games. And then Nintendo goes and announces it for Switch! Now I'm definitely on board!
I bought it as a present for my brother since he thought it looked interesting, but I'm definitely gonna give it a shot as well! (on Switch of course, haha) But yeah, being on Switch makes games 10x more appealing to me!
@@ThomasGameDocs last part is kinda reletable to me.

Another great video as always 💖 Indie games are so interesting to know about their process and origins :)
Hey, can I suggest you to check it out another indie, called The Cat Lady? It's dark but awesome
It's 2022 right now and the cuphead show came out lol

I love Cuphead's style, but I never played it because I'm bad at hard games too.
2 guys thought that they could make a better than other companies. What absolute Chads
"Cuphead - Don´t deal with the devil". -Did this name actually came up after signing the deal with Microsoft?
Thanks for a great video!!!
litery every time there are two guys making something cool, one of them has a giant beard and glasses and the other one looks much younger with no beard

Unused boss
So we have Looney Toons (Tunes?), Merrie Melodies.... and Silly Symphonies.
after all this, they said. Fuck this. turn it into a television show
That code typeout, is it the same in all videos that have one? Is it from a game?
CUPHEAD IS GONNA BE 4 YEARS OLD SOON IM SO OLD OML
Now I feel old
10:21 a what direct?
2:32 No pun intended
i think we already know how cuphead was made.
There's no need to watch the video, then! The world is your oyster!
Uh-
Hard work and imagination, they deserve all the success Cuphead gives them!
This series is like a development version of beta 64
And then the DLC Came out
I whoud like to see them do the original idea to
And now Cuphead is on PS4
Super Mario oddessy came out on my birthday
I'm not sure if this was a good thing. Maybe if it was released a day later, you could beg from your parents, or get a j...wait, quarantine...
I kinda like the original school idea I wish some how we could have gotten both
They made the art using copic markers, by far the best alcohol marker, and the most expensive.
I remember when Microsoft put developed Viva Piñata: Pocket Edition on the Nintendo DS. I bring this up to point out that Microsoft has put titles that they secured as exclusive on Nintendo platforms in the past.
Good video yet again.
Thanks!
You said it was released in December not September, not trying to be rude. Just pointing out an error.
Ah - good spot! Thanks for pointing that out!
I’m glad Microsoft and Nintendo are now getting along
So many trys and it was a acxadent and a plate
how did they put animation into engine? so mutch sprites for this type of animation it is ok?
Fun fact: I was born on april 18 and cuphead for the switch came out on the switch april 18
i saw cuphead and mugman on silly synphany
It wasn't a Nindies Nintendo Direct it was a NINDIES SHOWCASE!!!! Sorry about that.
I apologise for that grave error, haha
@@ThomasGameDocs Ok thanks 👍
i wonder what is harder, create cuphead or cuphead
They should have made a bendy run n gun
I also like run and gun games
If it were to have more exploration, or have the things that qualify it to be a "Metroidvania", and if anyone ever described the difficulty as "Souls like", then you call it a "SteroidVania"..I really want a new genre of games called "SteroidVanias!"
Even the incredible Cuphead, which sold 3 million copies and has one of the mos unique art styles in any video game, was not impressive at first and needed Microsoft's help to get it to where it was today. Just goes to show how hard it is to sell a game nowadays.
How portal was created?
I got to say Nintendo pretty much allowes any indie developer on the switch and that's not necessarily a good thing and BTW I honestly didn't know that cuphead was a indie game I thought that it was made by Microsoft
