    I mean no it wasnt that bad, but it wasn't that good either. I've always liked the theory that mgs1 was Snakes perspective and the Twin Snakes was Otacon's retelling of the story. Hence making it over the top and anime like. "It's just like one of my Japanese animes"

      I guess it's better to treat it as a spin-off than as a serious entry to the franchise. Then it does not have to stick to too high standards that it jus cannot fulfill and can be played more lighly. In other words, it's better to see it as a compliment rather than replacement of MGS1.

    3:42 kind of a tired argument for this game tbh. The supernatural elements of MGS are reserved for the supernatural beings. Thats what makes these scenes so extraordinary. When you get Snake leapfrogging off of missiles you have crossed a line of immersion breaking and are travelling into bad fanfiction. A lot of the ridiculous acrobatics in TTS get handwaved away because of one or two scenes from the original games and these people are missing the forest for the trees. I don't care that people like TTS, everyone has differest tastes, but this point always irked me when people bring it up because theres always been a clear distinction between the fantastical and grounded elements in the original.

    I personally can't stand Twin Snakes. The original is one of my favorite games of all time, I know it probably better than any other game I've played. The biggest problem for me is that Twin Snakes feels like it was made by people who thought the original game was boring, Twin Snakes doesn't have the same feel or spirit of the original.
    A remake that I consider to be absolutely amazing is another favorite of mine and one that released the same year, Resident Evil 2. That's a remake that changes a lot, adds new things, removes others, new voice actors, new play styles, but through it all it always felt like Resident Evil 2, just an updated version and the same goes for others like Final Fantasy VII. Twin Snakes doesn't have this.
    The characters feel off as well, Snake now feels like an insensitive asshole half the time and Otacon feels like a nerdy kid getting bullied by a jock. This is a HUGE problem because these two go on to become such good friends that they may as well be family and in the original that made sense because their friendship felt real. In Twin Snakes I have no clue why these two would stick around, they don't seem compatible as simple allies let alone life long friends.
    And the silliness and refusal to take things seriously bothers me to no end. From little moments like Ocelot dropping his gun during the torture scene to infuriating moments like Liquid jumping and flipping around on the guard rails when he's explaining everything to Snake after revealing himself as Master Miller. In the original both of these were important moments that were taken very seriously, but the remake seems to think we're bored by this and can't simply be engaged by the developments and storytelling.
    And btw, this is NOTHING like Vamp running on the water in MGS2. That works because the scene recognizes how crazy this is and everyone in the scene reacts accordingly, but in Twin Snakes whenever something crazy happens everyone just rolls with it and acts like nothing happened.
    Yes, you can just ignore all of the ways you can make this game easy for yourself but this should have been caught by the devs and compensated for. This is why remakes can't always be exactly like how the original was, when you bring a title designed for a system nearly 2 generations behind the current one you need to make sure that modern advancements don't break it.
    Overall Twin Snakes is okay on it's own but as a remake it's terrible.

  • @solidv2

    I don't think MGS1 graphics are a negative point. On the contrary, the emotions and complex story that those simple models are capable of expressing is something most people appreciate. I like to think of it as charming like a black and white movie.
    It says a lot about Twin Snakes that people barely mention the better visuals and instead dump on it for sacrificing the things the original game did better.

    • @Teknanam
      @Teknanam Рік тому

      imo, black and white is very different from low poly 3d. Mainly that low poly 3d ages worse. I think all early 3d gaming graphics age much worse than early filming when it comes to people with little nostalgia for the OGs.
      Twin Snakes got no re-releases and was exclusive to a much less popular system. More people willl play the PS1 original and assume from others that Twin Snakes is bad enough to not be worth playing. Its easy to dump on a game that way.

  • @Handsomeanthony68

    I honestly loved the Twin Snakes when it came out and I still emulate it every now and then. The music, while I get the criticism, didn’t ruin it for me. While I missed Mei Ling’s accent, I get why that was changed too. I loved the change on the cutscenes; Snake was supposed to be an 80’s action hero trope so if anything, I welcomed the change.
    The only thing on the whole that I didn’t like was the atmosphere. It seemed so bright as compared to the dim and foreboding lighting of the PS1 version. Maybe it was a necessity of the PS1 or they were going for the feel of a “cutting edge high tech weapons research facility” rather than an “underfunded facility used for the dismantling and storage of nuclear warheads”, I don’t know. But the lighting was the only thing that really chafed me, and I was able to shrug it off somewhat by making it headcanon that TTS is Raiden’s VR simulation of Shadow Moses.

    @GuyOnAChair 2 роки тому +10

    It's not forgotten, just ignored really.
    It reviewed fine to meh but as you incidentally pointed out at the 0:50 mark it has a lower Metacritic than the original. There's a console exclusive Far Cry game or two from 2006 that got an 80 to 85 and trust me they are no classics today.
    The GameCube also had the Resident Evil Remake in 2001 which is still a gold standard and has aged very well. Resident Evil is also pretty stupid, but I don't think that exuses either of them and unlike TTS it's remake improved on that front. In other Resident Evil remakes for better or worse they do try to ground or make the tone consistant. Twin Snakes has aged worse than the older game on these fronts which is part of it's infamy. It's updated graphics were lackluster for the time, (2004, same year as Snake Eater.) hardly better than MGS2 and actually worse in some ways disregarding that even for the GameCube hardware it wasn't exactly impressive. But that's still the least of it's problems, it's a remake that leaves one still wanting for a remake and what could be less satisfying or more dissapointing than that?

    • @PlayerAlert
      @PlayerAlert  2 роки тому +2

      85 is still a pretty good score though

      @@PlayerAlert Yeah but it's a remake, should be better/higher than the original PS1 game, no? 90 or not times been harsh but still kinder to the original game.

    • @PlayerAlert
      @PlayerAlert  2 роки тому +2

      It should definitely aim for that, but I think sometimes it's just hard beat the impact of when you first experience a game, along with the nostalgia attached to it. RE are great at doing it with their remakes, but if I look at something like FF7 Remake, I can appreciate a lot about the graphics and gameplay upgrades, but it will never feel like the first time experiencing the original.

    • @GuyOnAChair
      @GuyOnAChair 2 роки тому +7

      @@PlayerAlert Not talking of or from any sort of nostalgia I assure you. I mean the first Resident Evil Remake specifically. It cuts nothing, improves the base without breaking the design and what it adds fits in seamlessly as if it was always there. A polished title with impressive art direction and graphics. A remake. Not a reimagining, an update and remix.
      While the layout is 1:1 in TTS it doesn't work with the new mechanics or AI, and what's new comes off as jarring. It's even lacking content from the original. If something was bad in the original it's the same or worse in the remake. Sniper Wolfs fights are poor and remain unchanged simply because they existed before along with other segments. If something was good it's effect was diminished by other issues piling up leading to a death by a thousand cuts. Hard to take any part of it seriously when the entire game is so stupid now. Besides the kungfu Snake is performing actions in the cutscenes that he can't or didn't do ingame which leads to ludo narrative dissonance and a weaker connection with the player and the world. Whats funny is this wasn't even one of the original games problems and one of the things that in fact made it stand out. Also if he is as invincible as he is unphased why care when he's in danger? This also is at odds with the slightly more realistic mechanics dumped in from 2. Worse yet, Bosses and enemies can be tranqed but are treated as dead or killed regardless of the players choice and further breaking the narrative, point/messaging.
      Twin Snakes cutscenes are also longer, featuring awkward pauses etc as while the cinematics now have a glut of action the same director has no experience or idea how to shoot dialogue (which they themselves found boring) which in a script heavy title that's story was considered to be important is a death sentence as the pacing which may have already been questionable now firmly falls into the bad end of the spectrum.
      The other crucial thing is the Resident Evil Remake was actually made by the same team as the original Resident Evil where as Twin Snakes was not. Which may further explain one teams inability to identify strengths and weaknesses over the other besides experience. That and Silicon Knights also having less budget AND a single year. One is a remake that enhances and preserves the original, the other has aged faster than an older more limited title. You don't need (not always) the original team to do it right, Black Mesa's proof of that, but you do need to understand what does or doesn't work or you wind up with Hunt Down the Freeman.
      I apologize for the wall of text but I really hope you read this.

While the franchise would obviously become more and more outlandish with each game, MGS was the most grounded. I don't like that they felt the need to change that. I think it's something N64\PS1 graphics are well known for, but in the original the blue is bluer, the green is greener and the yellow is yellower. Hell, Snake Eater (Wich I believe came out the same year as TTS) had much more colors and it had beautiful art style and technically impressive graphics for a PS2 game. I think its really telling that videos in defense of Twin Snakes are often short, tend to beat around the bush for a minute or a few and primarily seem to only focus on refuting one or two common criticisms, while videos on why Twin Snakes doesn't work tend to be long, more thought out video essays that go into greater detail. No offense to the dude who made this video or people that like twin snakes but I'm just saying 🤷

Twin snakes having first person isnt even kind of crutch compared to that. • @MrRed88
    @MrRed88 2 роки тому +6

    I'm gonna try my best to not sound like a dick but there were some pretty bad points in the video in the game's defense.
    First off, I'll never understand how so many think the excuse of "well if you don't like the new mechanics than just don't use them" is not only a valid defense but also not a reason for why the game fails as a remake. Since when was it good game design to have to ignore core gameplay mechanics in order the play the game properly? Especially when said new mechanics are selling points on the back of the box. If your response to criticism of the new mechanics and how they break the game is just "play the game like the original", than why should you even play the remake and by extension why even have the remake at all? Also the comparison of chaff grenades to first person aiming as "ways to get around obstacles" is not applicable. Chaff grenades didn't break the game.
    Second, ok so younger fans would choose Twin Snakes because of it's graphics... and that a positive how? Imagine if the same thing was said in defense of something like Metal Gear Survive. I mean why not? It certainly has better graphics than the original MGS1, or MGS2 or MGS3 for that matter.
    Third, so the Matrix was really popular at the time and Twin Snakes was capitalizing on it, ok and? That somehow makes the over the top cutscenes good and not clash with the pre existing tone of the game if not the whole series? So all of a sudden shamelessly coping contemporary media is a good thing? Especially when the series was always great a carving out its own identity instead of following trends. Then there the "the series was always silly" excuse and I get it, there's your example of Vamp running on water, but you ever notice things like that are always done with characters who have some obvious cybernetic enhancement or purposefully have how they do what they do left a mystery to create some type of creepy aura around them IN CONTRAST to the more grounded setting the games reside in? That's the reason things like Psycho Mantis, Vamp, The End etc stand out so much. If the games were really that over the top every second than what would be so special about the things I just mentioned? Not to mention, later games use these silly moments to fit THEIR tone and game. Forcing these shenanigans into this pre existing story while not changing anything to accommodate said changes just creates a tonal clash, hence why most reject the newer action packed cutscenes.

      Right, I've slept on it and am ready to reply! First off, no worries leaving negative criticism, this is UA-cam after all and everyone is entitled to their opinion. There's a difference between constructive criticism and just being a dick :)
      Regarding the new mechanics, you're right, saying "just don't use them" is not exactly a great defence for the game, but personally I never really found them to be THAT game breaking. Yes, they certainly make certain areas and bosses easier i.e. Ocelot boss battle, but tbh I find the mechanics even make MGS2 relatively easy too. And that's not me trying to boast, I just find MGS2 to be relatively easy overall (still an amazing game). Of course, they naturally fit better, considering the game was built with the mechanics in mind, whereas retroactively adding them to MGS1 was always going to be more difficult. I actually think MGS3 did a much better job of adding those mechanics, while remaining a pretty difficult game. In response to why bother playing the remake if you're going to ignore the mechanics, I still think there's a few reasons to play the remake including the updated graphics, the new cutscenes, re-recorded voice performances, the new, albeit inferior, musical score and general gameplay feel (like how smooth movement feels in comparison to the OG).
      In terms of how better graphics is a positive, well I think if it gets them to dip their toe into the MGS series at all is good enough for me. Let's face it, the PS1 era hasn't held up too well graphically, seeing as it was part of the 1st generation to go fully 3D. A friend of mine played the OG MGS recently after I recommended it and he ended up not having a great experience, as he just found the graphics (and mechanics) to be too dated. It was sad to hear, but I guess if you don't have the nostalgic attachment, then it's harder to look past. In hindsight, I wish I directed him towards playing The Twin Snakes instead.
      With regards to capitalising on the Matrix trend, well Kojima is a huge cinephile and tends to pay homage to various films throughout the series i.e. Snake Plissken as the inspiration for Snake, Snake's Terminator-esque landing on the tanker at the start of MGS2, the Bond-esque inspirations in MGS3. Plus, it's been reported that it was Kojima who asked for the cutscenes to be re-done in Kitamura's action style, which I imagine could have also been influenced by the Matrix fever of the early 00s, especially considering Kojima was a fan of the film. Does it feel a little out of tone compared to the original? Sure lol, but considering the MGS series is renowned for being cinematic, I can let is slide and enjoy the fun :) I will say that the influences in other games are certainly less obvious though, which allows MGS to maintain its own unique identity.
      And finally, regarding the silliness of MGS, I like your points there. I think I was just trying to point out that MGS is known to be silly and goofy at times throughout the series, so I can accept the silliness thrown into The Twin Snakes.
      Anyway, I think that covers everything, my fingers are aching after that! Not sure it'll make my points in the video any better for you, but I appreciate the watch and engagement regardless :)

    I loved TTS and I grew up on playing MGS1. I just hate when people use the complaint of "over the top cutscenes". Every MG game has some whacky cutscene or over the top theme. MG parachuting down into a building (or jungle in the NES), MG2 Metal Gear blowing up the bridge, injuring your team, MGS2 Vamp, Seal Team 6, Snake jumping into the Hudson River twice! MGS3 Eva flip kicking Ocelot on a motorcycle. The whole series is not realistic at all.
    I think TTS improved on the alert phase quite a lot. Enemies actually search for you after an alert phase and clear whole rooms out or search lockers.
    The choking mechanic is fixed that it wont glitch out when you try to choke a soldier. Also it's harder to accidently flip an enemy instead of choking, or visa versa
    The tripwires in the tank hanger csn be shot, which I hated the camera on MGS1 since it's nearly impossable to see them.
    The voice acting is so much cleaner in TTS. In MGS1 it had an echo the entire game as well as traffic noise in one instance.
    I'm glad they changed Mei Ling's VA. First generation American with an extremely sterotypical Chinese accent? The VA change from the DARPA chief instead of Grey Fox's was better and less confusing.

    There's one thing you left out about TTS. I'm pretty sure you probably left it out because you don't want to spend a half hour talking about it. You kinda briefly addressed the fact TTS didn't have a major rerelease or different port. But I think it's worth talking about here.
    The original MGS didn't come to North America til 1998. It first released in Europe or Eastern countries as MGS European PAL Edition. This version featured a harder version of Extreme mode, Two hidden codec frequencies, Two bonus costumes. One for Meryl. The other for Grey Fox. And another disk containing over 300 VR missions.
    It did eventually come to North America but was rebranded MGS Integral. And it's pretty pricey from what I hear. Though I'm fine with the version I have without purchasing the Integral version. MGS2 also had a rerelease of this too. MGS2 Subsistance. Now that version I did own. In fact the original version, Subsistance version of 2&3, And the HD collections with full Trophy support.
    But unlike them versions, TTS didn't have any such rerelease. No VR missions, No harder version of Extreme mode, and less replay value compared to the original. I'm not saying it's bad for not including that. It's perfectly fine. Just that I play the original because of what all it has to offer. Not even the Dog tag system can save Twin Snakes.
    Anyways that's all and I thought you should know. So you let me know what you think. I'm curious if what you think of this topic.

    I'm the first to come out in bad mouth the company if they f****** on a remaster or a remake ask for this one there is nothing wrong with it I don't know why people get so upset about it and I had the original game the first week it came out me and my friends played the crap out of it everybody was having fun with it I love it it's a masterpiece the Remake Twin Snakes is fine nothing wrong with it the only thing they could have done is put option for the aiming in first person mode and yes the ocelot revolver fight is way too easy besides that the game is fine it's awesome stop bitching everyone

  • @emilianovillarruelhernande343

    While it’s not terrible I definitely prefer the og game, like even down to it’s graphics I just prefer how the characters look, the twin snakes model look off to me and I also like more the voice acting of the original, it’s more grounded and better acted

    i think the cutscenes in the twin snakes are over the top for a reason, for example the jumping on the rocket takes me out of the narrative which reminds me, the audience, not to take this game so seriously and not idol worship snake or kojima. i love the twin snakes and i think alot of the hate this game gets is from people wearing nostalgia goggles.

    Honestly i love both if I'm ever doing a metal gear solid replay of the series I'll mgs 1 ps1 on pcsx1 then mgs2 and 3 on pcsx2 (side note If you use an emulator especially on mgs 3 if you are using a ps4 or 5 controller or xbox change square/X to L2/LT and circle/B to R2/RT since mgs3 uses pressure sensitiv buttons and unless you know how to connect a ps2 and 3 controller to a pc) anyway I'll play through mgs twin snakes on dolphin (again to fix the blu codec in dolphin go to graphics then hacks and turn of "store xfb" and "immediately present XFB" and then mgs4 on ps3 the metal rising on ps3 and ignore mgs5 since Konami ignored to finish it

    So I own both versions of MGS1 and I’ve always said the PS1 original is practically perfection. So being able to play it redone with a Sons Of Liberty-type engine, I was pumped.
    True this ends up making the game easier with aiming, and there’s things that were brought from MGS2 that to me seem like a waste, like the hanging from ledges, getting dog tags, or stashing bodies in lockers. Those didn’t seem to really need a use.
    My biggest gripe is the ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ cut scenes. Grey Fox, that’s ok, that’s his character. But why can Snake do these spectacular things in a cut scene, but can’t even jump in gameplay.
    My 2nd gripe was the controller. ‘Hold A + Start’ for the codec, or ‘Hold B + Start’ to pause/map. They should’ve just had Start to pause the game with a map then choose codec or resume. That was irritating
    Other than those 2 issues, still very good, not the PS1 masterpiece, but another good way to relive the adventure

    Graphically MGS was very striking, nothing else of its era looked anything like it. It is dated but I will always have a super soft spot for ot

    The twin snakes is underrated in my opinion it seems mgs 1 on the ps1 gets more love from fans compared to the game cube remaster twin snakes which makes sense as a lot of different design choices were made however my main issue that I have with some fans is the gate keeping when it comes to how someone should experience metal gear solid 1. I think any new fan should experience this game however they like i remember when I played mgs 1 on my ps1 and I struggled a lot so I took a break from it and booted up twin snakes on my GameCube and guess what I beat the game so I went back to play the game on my ps1 and I beat the game on that console I would say twin snakes allows a new player to get a grasp of the mechanics and it just helps when the graphic quality is higher res as well so you can spot things easier. Both versions are fantastic in there own right but for my case twin snakes made the ps1 version feel more accessible.

    Didnt the VA’s not get paid/ hardly were paid to redo their lines? If i recall, Konami/ Kojima sicked their lawyers on them to fuck them.

    I've been a Fan of the Franchise since the MGS1 for the original Playstation.
    But I wasn't entirely satisfied with The Twin Snakes Version, it wasn't good enough.
    I like it, there's just a lot wrong with it: The visual looks dark compared to the Original and MGS2 that I can barely see.
    Some of the glitches kill the game: The camera near the stairs in the tank hangar always spot you no matter what you do, except if you use Chaff and if you get spotted even once you always get Alert 3 times, even if you Reset the game or die and exit.
    And some of the cutscenes are ruined: the Original cutscene with the tower bridge was dramatic. After the bridge gets destroyed the Hind appears and Snake runs toward the handrail where you're supposed to use the Rope, but in Twin Snakes after the bridged is destroyed a metal debris flies towards Snake, Snake chucks a Grenade at it, WALK TOWARDS the handrail where you're supposed to use the Rope, the Hind appears and there's NO MORE DRAMATIC RUNNING!
    And in the cutscene where Gray Fox dies, why does Snake scream his name before he gets crush?
    Apparently another reason why the dialogue was rerecorded was due to Jeremy Blaustein's fault for changing Mantis's last words during his death.
    Kojima intended for Mantis to say "It's strange... Such a nostalgic feeling." because it was supposedly to give him nostalgia of his mother giving birth to him, but when working on Metal Gear Solid: Integral, Kojima found out that his work was being changed, so he cut ties with Jeremy since and had to hire a new translator just to a literal translation.

    I didn't know this game had such high scores ngl. With the port collection coming I've been seeing all these people asking for this version of the game to be ported as well and being fairly new to the mgs fanbase I just heard everyone hated it. Seems it was just a vocal minority cause I really like Twin Snakes as well lol I will admit some cutscenes go a little crazy but it's nothing too weird I mean this is MGS and weird stuff tends to happen and imo it's more then worth it for the better graphics/gameplay

      Yeah, it seemed to have been received pretty well with reviewers at the time, but has slowly developed a bad rep over the years.
      I can recognise the flaws that people bring up, but I just don't care enough to make me hate the game. It's a fun game to play through :)

    I recently went through every mgs title via emulation save for mgs5 on pc but even in 2021 mgs1 was such a blast to play through and see how cinema in games started all those years ago. I almost played twin snakes but ended up going with the OG mgs1 due to some videos bad mouthing twin snakes but after this video I think I might give it a try. Awesome video man keep it up id love to see more from you

    Original sound and grittiness of the levels make it feel more genuine. I enjoyed twin snakes, but the new music and the level design being "too clean" gave it less realism to the original. Like the original heliport felt like it was cold by looking at it on ps1.

    Even though I'll forever love MGS1 on the original PS1 and I'm on the minority when I say, but I do prefer playing The Twin Snakes lol yeah it's sucks there's no vr training and the new music is kinda meh. If they did a hd remaster, just add the ability to switch soundtrack and have the ability to go First person disabled during Ocolet's boss battle, then it would be perfect lol

      I'm kind of in the same boat. Absolutely love the OG, probably my favourite game of all time, but I love the way the gameplay feels in Twin Snakes. It just had that smoothness which MGS2 brought to it.

    This was my first MGS game, I loved it back then, I didn't had anything to compare it to, I only played the original years later with Spanish dub (which I oddly loved), I found the original very enjoyable as well, both are different versions of the same game. You could say, TTS isn't the original vision but acting as if the entire series isn't over the top anime bs is being disingenuous, lol.
    I still have my original copy but I'd rather just emulate it.
    Oh, and BTW, there is a mod for the original's soundtrack for dolphin, look it up.

    • @PlayerAlert

  • @federico1996123
    @federico1996123 2 роки тому

    Good video, I am not the biggest fan of TTS tbh, I think in terms of atmosphere the original beats it by a mile, the graphics are obviously technically better, but it is missing a lot of cool post processing effects that MGS2 used a lot, everything looks a bit too clean, etc, I like the original soundtrack much more, the original feels much more misterious and haunting, not talking much about the cutscenes because that was the point of makin them different, even tho I do think they went a bit far.
    Things I did like about it were making the backtracking much shorter, the script was much more feithfull to the original japanese one and obviously having the gameplay from mgs2 was fun even tho it wasnt really well balanced for MGS1.
