Oh man... this video was fantastic! There's so much unearthed info to the Fate universe's lore that we don't get to see in the anime, and I always love when creators put a lot of thought into things like magic systems and how they work. Great video, keep them coming!
I'm absolutely obsessed with fate lore/the nasuverse! To cover it all would be the equivalent of writing a college dissertation multiple times over so you have my absolute respect for this. I'm so curious about the additional lores that haven't been made into anime that if there's anyone able to put this stuff into understandable videos I would definitely find interest but as for additional questions in terms of the root, I suppose a description as to how a magus could "access" the root? We saw a little bit explained to Rin in Fate/Zero but what do you say?
There are a number of ways to access the Root, usually by taking a concept and refining it to it's pinnacle (like achieving the ultimate of a certain magecraft or attaining nothingness via martial arts training), or by using the Second, Third or Fourth Magics. Kiritsugu's dad had a good way of reaching the Root without refining their time magecraft to it's pinnacle, and that is accelersting his own time up to the end of the universe, where the Root will show up again, but developing said spell would take 200 years.
It's interesting that this term exist among some real life mystic groups, occultists and healers and people who practise astral projection. They call it Akashic record though. Akashic Record (Root) is like main source code of the whole universe and source of all knowledge. People who reached it through astral projection, gathered a lot of knowledge of universe and certain strong gut feeling. Most of mystics and people performing astral projection say that like in nasuverse, universe is like gigantic video game. Where we are npc shaped by a certain code. Same with objects and nature Everything works due to code, 1 and 0. If we know it, we can interfere with that code. This is magic. Dr Strange also presented it. That is why magic circles are geometric, as it is connected to Sacred geometry. 1 and 1. Forms line. Line creates shape. Like codes create pixels.
I once chatted with one guy that performed astral projection ;D He also told me that there is something like "heroic spirits" too. As all concepts from fiction "live" on astral plane. Characters like Mario, mickey mouse, Sonic can exist on astral plane as "living ideas". I saw one guy making lecture on youtube about it too.
Vish Wah Any form of information is by definition knowledge. Whether or not the receiver of said knowledge believes it to be true or not doesn’t change the definition
Wow! This is pretty good reference material. I found this while researching Magecraft for a story Idea I am (hopefully) gonna write. The Root reminds me a lot of the Domain in the Halo universe. Which makes me wonder if it is possible, in the Nasuverse, to reach the Root through very advanced technology instead of magecraft?
Not really; technology weakens its Magecraft equivalent, since by copying it you are weakening the Mystery behind it. Plus, reaching the Root would involve True Magic, either to get there or receiving it when you get there. As such, using technology to reach the Root is impossible, since True Magic in the Modern Era is specifically described as "that which science will never replicate, no matter how much time passes."
If all(if not most) phantasmal spirits like dragons fled to the reverse side of the world, its a bit strange that things like the dead apostles can exist on our side. I wonder if theres a lore reason to this which I have yet to discover.
They are technically aliens I think and don’t belong on Gaia but are kept there because the first vampire made a deal with Gaia to hunt down and kill humanity. So I guess they are welcome because of that deal. I’m not sure but that’s how I interpret it.
@@zachzimmer7459 basically Gaia knows there's a potential future where she'll die and humanity will continue on her corpse and didn't like the fact a species will continue on after her death. She managed to call out to the consciousness of other planets and they sent their ultimate life forms to earth. These lifeforms are in a state of hibernation until the time Gaia is dead, then they will wake and slaughter humanity. The dead apostles are descendants of the Type Moon, one of these ultimate life forms. I don't know why, but i guess being descendants instead of the ultimate life form themselves, they were able to continue on without going to sleep. Also dragons and phantasmals are gone because of the decline in Gaia's strength. The planet that the Type Moon and its descendants are connected to is still alive and strong so they can continue to exist just fine
Ranook Right! One of the potential futures is Notes where it explained that. It’s been a while since I did any lore digging that memory is hazy on the details. Thanks for explaining it man!
@@ranook8264 Nope. Thats not what happened yet. Gaia will call out to the ultimate ones of other planets in the future when she is on the verge of death, she hasn't called them yet. Its just that due to some time shenanigans, the planet Mercury received Gaia's call many millenniums EARLIER and Type Mercury(ORT) arrived really early and is in a state of hibernation. The other planets haven't got the call until AFTER Gaia calls out to them. So they haven't come to Earth and were never in a state of hibernation. The reason DAs are still active on Earth is cause Gaia believes that they'll be enough, sadly she doesn't know yet that they aren't enough and should've called out to the Ultimate Lifeforms earlier.
SImply, because most of the beasts that disappeared did so due to the lack of mystery and such, but Dead Apostles really don't care at all about such a thing. Plus, only the beings that could more or less leave their bodies behind could move to the Reverse Side, which is why I believe we have cases like a village of werewolves still alive somewhere in the mountains, with probably others all around. That, and a massive hole right below the Clocktower that was excavated by a dragon trying to escape to the Reverse Side, about... 20 kilometers deep or something? He totally failed though.
@@KhanhNguyen-mh5ec Nope the very nature of science destroys and weakens mystery. Mystery is like the formless darkness its power comes from not being defined, the more people know a magi's foundation and system of working magecraft the more it loses power. Science is like the light that shines into the darkness and advances by clearly defining what was once formless.
@@chaostomb It feels more like magecraft and science exist to complement one another. Even though science does lead to new insights on previously mysterious phenomena, it can still lead to more questions and mystery. Even now, we struggle to understand what matter underlies an atom, and what 'dark matter' is; if mages were very adaptable (which can be a challenge for them, since it takes generations for them to compile their techniques and arts, and the Age of Gods are their inspiration), they could try re-defining what exactly Mystery means in the modern age. It would be tricky, but not undoable. The human mind isn't capable of absorbing the entirety of truth, after all.
I would love to compile all the stuff we learn of magecraft from the tv shows vn and other sources to make a pseudo magecraft textbook that would be cool.

Great video. But just a correction, aside from those people that directly connected to the swirl of root (e.g Ryougi Shiki and Manaka Sajyou) it's been stated that no one have ever manage to reach it. Wherein those wielders of true magic really didn't reach the swirl of root, they are merely using pathway or gateway to the root that they found to draw power from it to some extent. That's why there are 5 types of existing true magic that tied and limited only to their respective abilities. Unlike those that have direct connection with the root, that in theory can do whatever they want akin to being an omipotent god. It's also the reason why someone can inherit those 5 true magic, since it's existing pathway to draw power from the root and also the reason why the deterrent force will not usually intervene when the user going to use the true magic. Just like what Einzberns did on the 3rd true magic that they're using for the holy grail system and the Aozaki family on their 5th true magic that's been inherited by Aozaki Aoko.
Can someone answer my following questions? Shirou was pretty much practicing something close to true magic? Is this true? If it is how and why? How much mana does a magic crest hold? I’m more asking about the Tohsaka crest, since that’s the only one we see in the show that gets transferred or linked so to speak. Would Shirou be more OP if he somehow got the Emiya crest? We’ve seen a more trained Shirou in Prisma Illya, Myu verse Shirou got a shit ton of mana from her during the war and literally 1 vs. All the servants nearly.
Kae I’m not sure if I’m right but here’s my response: Shirou is NOT practicing true magic or anything close to it. It’s more like a new system of magecraft he discovered, deriving from projection magic. The reason why he’s able to make swords extremely well is that his origin is blade, hence the chant “I am the bone of my sword.” or “My body is made of swords.” Also, one’s origin represents their affinity towards an object or concept. In shirou’a case, since blade is his origin, he has an affinity towards any blades in general, hence his ability to use unlimited blade works or to repair his own flesh by literally using parts of a blade. As for Tohsaka’s crest that we see in UBW, yeah idk exactly how much lol, but we can assume that it has a lot of mana due to the Tohsaka family’s bloodline. As for the magic crest shirou uses, I don’t think him using the Emiya crest would make him stronger compared to using the Tohsaka crest. Remember, the magic family crest is the composite power from all the family’s ancestors. In other words, the longer the family history is of mages, the more powerful the crest becomes. The Tohsaka family is hailed as one of the most prestigious families in the Clock Tower due to their extensive bloodline of mages. The Emiya family, on the other hand, is not as well known, so we can assume that their bloodline is not as powerful, thus, having a weaker magic crest. For Miyu-verse shirou, I’m not sure how he got all that mana, but it’s definitely not from kiritsugu. Kiritsugu never wanted to teach shirou magecraft to begin with, let alone passing on the crest. We know this because we never saw the crest on shirou. Assuming shirou got the mana from miyu is a bit more reasonable since she’s the grail and all. But I don’t think he got the mana from her as they didn’t do anything related to mana transferring or magic crest transferring. In my personal opinion, I think it’s just plot armor.
@@AnoranAlpenthorn In the manga Shirou in prisma illya pretty much stated he was receiving mana from Myu and he can no longer fight Angelica with out that mana being provided to him, He held his own against EA for a decent amount of time due to the mana given to him without him knowing. I asked if Shirou would be more op with the Emiya crest. I worded this wrong, I meant to ask if he would be stronger then his normal self enough to use UBW at least. not to the level of the Tohsaka crest of course. People have told me over the years, Shirou was unintentionally practicing true magic because Kiritsugu just taught him what ever. Something about Natsu confirming it, I could never find a source for it and I don't speak Japanese so I assume it was from a magazine or something akin to it.
@@kae1971 I don't read the manga or the VN so this is something new to me. For the UBW topic i don't know about that then. I'm not sure but I THINK he should be able to use it (though not to the extent when he had the crest) once he improves as a mage but not at his state during the war. I'm also not sure about Shirou practicing true magic because true magic is beyond unlimited blade works. Shirou's magic is not one of the 5 True Magics. I did some research a few months ago and found that he uses has to do with his innate affinity/origin towards blades, which, again, explains some parts of his chant. Also, the magecraft shirou uses is a derivative of projection magic, in which kiritsugu taught him.
May as well add my thoughts on this too Like Eric said, Shirou isn't using true magic. Because his origin is "sword" (as far as i've found on the wiki) the only magecraft he has is Unlimited Blade Works, projection and reinforcement are just minor abilities of UBW. UBW is a reality marble, which is exceptionally powerful magecraft, is still a far cry from true magic. As far as I know, there aren't really any units of measurement for mana, so we can't really answer how much the Tohsaka crest has. We know the Tohsaka family has been around for at least as long as the Grail War, so at least a couple hundred years worth of mana was passed down through it. As for Shirou getting the Emiya crest, there's a couple things I wanted to point out. 1: a magic crest doesn't just store mana, it also holds the knowledge and some of the spells that family has researched. So the Emiya crest would be attuned to time magecraft, not something Shirou could make much use of. 2nd Kiritsugu may not have even inherited the Emiya crest, considering the events in Fate/ Zero Finally the Miyu-verse Shirou seemed to have a better grasp of his powers, mostly because he fought in the Ainswerth Grail War using the Archer Card of his future self. If Shirou in the UBW route got stronger from fighting against Archer, think about how much stronger he'd get if he fused with Archer and used his powers instead.
Reality marbles are a big deal, they are still magecraft but pushing towards true magic, that's why they are so rare, still it's something innate to him an extension of his self, unlike usual magecraft that has formulas and can be learned, what Kiritsugu did was teaching him wrongly how to use magecraft, any magecraft, so Shirou was doing it wrong all his life untill the war, he thought one had to create a magic circuit every time magic was used, when indeed he had to awaken the circuit once and then just turn it on and off, he was repeating the activation every time and then shutting it down completely, wich was risky and painful but he didn't knew better, wich is very far from practicing true magic, is him not knowing to use the very basics of magecraft. The purpose of magic crests is not storing mana but knowledge, the spells and whatever are inside it and every heir adds their knowledge to it making it more and more complex and so helping the heir to perform increasingly complex levels of magecraft impossible to achieve in a single lifetime, what Rin does with Shirou is giving him a little bit so he is connected to her, and then she supplies him with her energy, is basically the same as the relation master- servant, but the mana Is all from Rin, the Crest doesn't amplify the amount of mana one can hold, indeed it needs to be supplied mana from the heir to work, and so the Emiya Crest won't improve Shirou's performance in any way, it has the knowledge of the Emiya family about their time altering magecraft, but Kiritsugu doesn't have all of it just a part, remember his father had a sealing designation, the Emiya Crest is held by the Magic Asociation after his death and Kiritsugu is given only a part, also Crests are not compatible with everyone, if someone is not blood related the chance of being compatible are really slim, of course there's Crests that have ways around that but is the exception not the rule.
I need all the help I can get to fight Gilgamesh Archer. Or as I like to call him Half Mongrel or Half Mutt. Edit: also finally got Emiya Archer had to use the "your choice ticket".
I don't understand why people think Gil calls others "mongrels" as if he's mocking humans. The guy prefers his human side over his divinity for fuck's sake, he's not "half-mongrel", he calls others so because he's a king and they are his subjects.
@@vicount3944 I don't see Gilgamesh in Babylonia refer his subject as "mongrel" even once. So no, he's arrogant, and mongrel is the degrading term he use for everyone else except for Enkidu.
@@cynt4416 You misunderstood me. Some people act like he says "mongrel" because he's 1/3 divine, so they think they're smart when they point out that he's also human.
The Root is Nothingness but no longer true Nothingness. Presumably, it’s the same difference as a Noble Phantasm vs an Original Prototype, or a Demon vs a True Demon. Demons are those that received a name (designation), thus gaining new abilities and individuality. However, Demons are inferior to True Demons, those that existed without a name. The fandom associates this with Plato’s theory of forms, that there is an ideal form and deviating from that ideal form makes it less ideal. The Root originally was Nothingness, Void, or [ ]. Kara no Kyoukai material confirms it (Kara = Emptiness). However, it also confirms it is no longer Nothingness due to being named the “Spiral of Origin”. I’ve copy/pasted the translated reference from Type Moon wiki below. Kara no Kyoukai Special Pamphlet 「 」 [Others] If you really wished to pronounce this term, call it "Kara". Its meaning varied depending on each individual's understanding. To put it in simple terms, it was the Spiral of Origin. However, since the Spiral of Origin was called the Spiral of Origin, it was no longer ' '. Based on Foreigner Artoria’s material, the Root seems to be the power that expands the Universe. I’m generally skeptical of Servant Universe differences, but this seems to be a fundamental mechanic to how the Root and a Universe interact. Besides being a record, the Root likely filters Nothingness into creation (Universe = “all of creation”). This makes sense since the Root is said to be the source of all events and phenomena. Conservation of Mass and Energy doesn’t seem to be an absolute law, given Genesis Authorities can ignore Conservation of Mass and seemingly the existence of Perpetual Motion Type 1. A power of the End, like Ea and Rhongomyniad, can ‘damage’ Nothingness and the Root. A power of the Beginning likely has to do with creation from ‘damaged’ Nothingness. Presumably, Nothingness far predates the Planet, which was created 4.5 billion years ago by the god Ea. The Root was likely created at the same time or later. When the gods created the Human World using the sword Ea, they separated Heaven and Earth. Heaven is said to be the Root by Aoko, whereas Earth is likely the Human World. The Root is also called the Outside of the World. The Truth of the World, that which Ea reveals, is also confirmed to be or in the Root from material for Void Shiki, Paracelsus, and Helena. The Root is said to be the seat of the gods according to Aoko. She isn’t sure of this. But the Fate series confirms the existence of the Throne of Divinities/Gods and Throne of Heroes existing in the Root (Heroic Spirits = “artificial gods”).
Before Archer Emiya became a Counter Guardian, he participate in his universe’s holy grail war and summoned saber, but if there’s no Heroic Spirit Emiya yet at the time, then who exactly did Rin summon in that Holy Grail War?
She still summoned Emiya since the Throne exist outside of time so since he will eventually become heroic spirit Emiya he would still be able to be summoned into his own timeline

@@theunknown3983 The Heaven's Feel route of the visual novel finally gets to the deeper mechanics of how servants are summoned, and that the war's true purpose is to reach the root. In general though, yeah, the nasuverse becomes much clearer as you explore not just one work, but a variety of the works that have been created over the years. You gleam little pieces from each, and videos like this aim to combine all that knowledge in a single place.
It would be great if you could discuss more about magical energy as a whole. Such as what is mana? What is Od? And if Prana is the result of utilizing both Mana and Od then why do most Fate series use them interchangeably?
BB split off her emotions and mixed it in with goddesses to create High Servants. That is literally what an Alter Ego is, an alternate version of someone; in the original case, five versions of BB known as the Sakura 5.
Guys is saber considered as a heroic spirit or a counter force? , because iirc she pledged herself to the world that if she has the opportunity to return as a normal girl and not a king she would do it, and then the holy grail war appeared and so she got summoned as a servant
Axels Santoso She’s a limited purpose counter guardian. She’s summoned only when the grail is involved. It’s part of her deal. She halted her death so she could pursue the grail.
She would become a counter guardian only if all the conditions are fulfilled, that is that she gets the grail WHILE STILL ALIVE, and mades her wish to erase herself as king, in FSN and Zero she is neither a counter guardian nor a heroic spirit, she is just summoned from her last moments after Camlann

Oh man... this video was fantastic! There's so much unearthed info to the Fate universe's lore that we don't get to see in the anime, and I always love when creators put a lot of thought into things like magic systems and how they work. Great video, keep them coming!
By the end of all these lessons, I won’t even need to go clock tower anymore 😂
I'm so happy you are doing a series like this!
Thanks!
Going full Dai-sensei. Fate lore should be a credited course somewhere lol.
As an occultist, I find this very helpful. Thank you OtakuDai, the world needs knowledge like this
It's interesting that this term exist among some real life mystic groups, occultists and healers
and people who practise astral projection.
I once chatted with one guy that performed astral projection ;D
He also told me that there is something like "heroic spirits" too. As all concepts from fiction "live" on astral plane. Characters like Mario, mickey mouse, Sonic can exist on astral plane as "living ideas".
I saw one guy making lecture on youtube about it too.
Most anime's have some type of real-life metaphysical knowledge.

I definitely want to learn not so I could potentially reach the Root, but to be able to truly understand of the world and what lies beyond.
I can't help but notice its seemingly neoplatonic influences in this lore.
How cool would it be if magecraft actually existed
It does it's called SCIENCE
Science+mystery= Magic
@@Wyrmcrush That’s the reason the school of Modern Magecraft exists within the Clock Tower.

I love this so much thank you so much!

My first lesson at the clock tower!
Kae I’m not sure if I’m right but here’s my response:
Shirou is NOT practicing true magic or anything close to it.
May as well add my thoughts on this too
Like Eric said, Shirou isn't using true magic.
2nd Kiritsugu may not have even inherited the Emiya crest, considering the events in Fate/ Zero
Finally the Miyu-verse Shirou seemed to have a better grasp of his powers, mostly because he fought in the Ainswerth Grail War using the Archer Card of his future self.

So is Nothingness, or [ ], the same thing or different from The Root?
It's very similar. Depends on the context.
Kara no Kyoukai Special Pamphlet
「 」 [Others]
If you really wished to pronounce this term, call it "Kara".
