I'm am however positively surprised with how the majority of you still enjoy shinies, and I desperately wish I felt the same way, i just don'. I'm no stranger to shiny hunting and have done it for years, my loss of interest mostly comes from how the *Work* for it has been seemingly removed. But I'm glad to see how many still enjoy it, and I envy your ability to separate POGO shinies with full odds shinies. With that being said, don't take what I say to heart, and enjoy hunting those shinies!
yes, yes they are. got 3 shinies in 11 minutes here the other day. what made them rare and epic with the odds being 1 in 8000 is now ruined by pokemon go making it so easy and an everyday encounter.
The origin mark is everything. Every time i see a shiny i look at the origin mark, that tells me everything about how rare or how much work or luck when into that pokemon. If i see a shiny with that funny little G or Tera symbol, i know it’s not as impressive as one with 3DS era / No symbol. The shinies aren’t necessarily devalued, i’d just say there’s a bit more layers to it all now.
Which is interesting to hear as most people I know consider GO shinies more valuable (as there's no known way to hack in a GO stamped mon like you can with mainline games.)
People have always been hacking them in, so I feel like the value in shiny Pokémon is moreso about what meaning they have to you. They have definitely gotten easier to obtain, but I also remember similar discussion about chain fishing. The thing with Pokémon being multi-generational though is that a colosseum shiny vs a GO shiny are going to be different and the former can amass a ton of ribbons. That alone makes it distinct in my opinion. With the odds higher in newer games, there is still mark and size hunting, which can get the odds pretty low again.
I agree with you, I started playing with Gen 4 and started shiny hunting in Gen 6 when they made method hunting easier. Even though you could reduce the odds quite a bit in the 3DS titles & Gen 8, starting with PLA I started finding them without even trying, and the fun of them was never the color for me, it was the rarity. I think when they became so easy to a point where everyone had a couple I started going back to Gens 3, 4, & 5, where I never even tried hunting because the 1/8192 odds were so intimidating, and ended up really enjoying the hunts. I have half as many shinies in the 2D games but each one is way more gratifying to me.
I'm a dedicated full odds hunter. And I disagree for one big reason. A shiny Pokemon's value for me, comes from the personal experience of finding it. I am simply going to care about the 1/8192 shiny I put in the work for more than the one I find in Pokemon go. Even when shiny Pokemon were still rare, I didn't see any value in the shiny someone traded to me because it lacks the personal experience of hunting it. I think for that reason, from a shiny hunters perspective, they will always have value to me, because I'm putting in the work to get a full odds shiny, one I can brag about, how long it took me, or how fast I got it. That's where the value comes from for me.
With that said I HATE how passive some of the methods are in some of the newer games. It's pretty much impossible to hunt full odds in Arceus and that's very frustrating for me
in my opinion, shinies have never had actual tangible value. that value is determined by the person who finds that shiny. no matter if it’s a kid who just got a hacked shiny off wonder trades and loves it to death or someone who found a cool shiny in pogo, that shiny is valuable to them and that’s all that matters to me. personally i’m a full odds hunter so i tend to go after some of the more long hunts such as my sinjoh ruins shiny giratina in hgss. i treasure that shiny and the time i spent to find it, it’s why it is my twitter/youtube pfp. seeing others find shiny giratinas at way better odds and or better reset times doesn’t make me value my shiny any less.
I loved your video, and as a Pokemon Go apologist, I've got a lot of experience under my belt. I've got 1152 shinies as of speaking in Go, as well as 3 boxes of shinies in Pokemon Home. I agree entirely that there is an overabundance of shinies out in the wild nowadays, but I don't feel like the issue is as severe as it appears. With the way that the Pokemon Go to Home transfer works right now, it would take me literally years to farm up enough transfer power to move my shinies into home, so I haven't moved many. In pokemon go, even though theres a way higher chance of encountering a shiny, the only guaranteed shinies are the mythical quests, which take months to complete, and are locked to One per account. Tasks like "Reach level 40" or "Catch 151 different species of pokemon" take absurdly long to finish up. As for pokemon go shiny rates, the ones on that website were based on player reports, which doesn't account for all total encounters, for example, ive seen 428 sneasel, and 6 have been shiny. Thats a rate of just under 1/72 shinies per encounter, putting me severely under odds. Basically, every pokemon has a shiny rate of 1/512, except for pokemon that mostly appear in eggs, like galarian farfetch'd at 1/64, pokemon from Team Go Rocket leaders, like a shiny beldum at 1/128, Legendaries at raids with a shiny rate of 1/20, and Big events like Community days and GoFest, which typically have encounters at 1/25 a shiny rate. My pokemon go experience is also something of an abnormality. I usually look at every enounter, and only the past 6 or 7 months have I dedicated to catching most pokemon I see. For a random example, I have pokemon like swinub, at 1503 encounters, 753 caught, and 29 shiny swinubs, including the two I've evolved. I played Swinub community day, and it's usually a spawn for Gofests. But really think about how many that is. I could go on and on with examples like that, but out of my 1152 shinies, I've only got 570 unique shinies. There are currently 785 shinies released into the game, discounting costumes, alternate forms, and megas. If anyone wants to talk pokemon go, feel free to comment on here!

I kinda like the modern games’ approach to it. It feels like a difficulty selector, if you wanna go full odds you can, or if you wanna find a shiny in 20 minutes you can do that as well. I think it’s neat for people who want to find their favorite shiny but also have other responsibilities and don’t wanna spend possible days of their free time doing the same activity over and over again. My favorite hunt in the modern games will probably always be my Shiny Greninja though, did it without any odds boosting and it felt really nice finally seeing my differently colored Frog
All 100% fact. Almost every team online comes packed with at least one shiny. It’s no longer cool to see them. If you have a team of 4 shiny pokemon then I and many others will just think they are hacked/from go. Coz that is too common and you cannot show the work you may have put in to get it :(
Its not about the shiny itself, for me its about the value of the experience, i dont care if others might think I was lazy and did pokemon go raids, if i got to experience soft reset hunting a 1/4000 pokemon then that experience and accomplishment is all that really matters for me
I think you’re more than welcome to have your opinion but I respectfully disagree. I’ve shiny hunted for the last 10 years and Go didn’t “ruin” shinys. You’ve always been able to just gen or hack shiny pokemon in and their value has always been “just a cosmetic” and something that varies from player to player. For example, I purchased the shiny Jirachi ticket from Go, it’s the only cost friendly way for me to get Jirachi, and it took me 10 months to complete. One of the stages was find 10 Kecleon, that stage alone took 4 months. But the memory of getting that shiny Jirachi was great and I’ll always value that shiny highly because of it. There’s no difference in a community day in Go vs putting on a sparkling sandwich in SV and finding 4 shinys in half an hour. I think if you just focus on your own collection and stop comparing it to others you’ll enjoy shinys a lot more.
That's fair and it's awesome you enjoy it! As for the sandwiches in scarlet and violet, yes I agree, I also find that to be "too easy" For the collections, to me I don't compare my shinies to anyone, all in all I've probably gotten about 150-200 shinies from hunting, my loss of love for shinies is that I don't have to put in the effort anymore, then again, disagreeing can be healthy, but u appreciate your view!
@@kimolingo I think you can put in effort if you choose to do so. Like for example, I didn’t use the shiny charm at all in PLA, but I did “perfect” some Dex entries so it was still like 1/1000ish. I can understand where you're coming from, the joy of fining a rare shiny back in the day was kind of magical, but with them being thrown around everywhere that feeling is lost, and I totally understand wanting that old magical experience back. But I also understand that shiny Pokemon are significantly more popular now days and thus have a huge marketing pull, so I can't be completely mad at The Pokemon Company (or whoever is making the decisions on these things) increasing the shiny rates in order to attract more players. I would say for the casual player they simply have a bit more of a chance to find a shiny and experience that joy, but for someone who is pouring hundreds of hours into the game the experience is definitely different than what it used to be. I think there are positives and negatives to both old and new shiny rates, but because shiny Pokemon have never had any other value in or outside of the games besides aesthetics and bragging rights, the changing shiny rates aren't really affecting the overall game anyway. Personally I think it would be cool if Pokemon had more than one shiny form, with some shinys being fairly easy to find and some being significantly rarer to find. Not only should this satisfy both casual and more hardcore gamers, but would give Pokemon the opportunity to make better shinys for the many Pokemon who have terrible shinys haha.
I'm a pokemon go player. I don’t know much about Pokemon Go, I’m too lazy, so I can’t comment on that. That being said, I mostly disagree with your thesis. I’ve played a lot of Pokemon and I remember shiny hunting in gen 6. As long as you had friend safari, it was easy, you just needed to sink the time in. (Usually 2-4 hours of hunting.) Most people probably weren’t trading friend codes online like I was, so maybe they didn’t see how easy it was? I’ve sunk 5+ hours into shiny porygon in Scarlet, no luck yet, lol. I would say they do have less value now, but the value they had before was nuts. I saw someone offering a shiny eevee once for trade and you should have seen how nasty people were to each other over it. Shinies are more fun now that people take them less seriously. They are more of an expression of the trainer now and less of a status symbol.
I've never really cared about shinies. They're neat but I've never felt any desire to hunt them. The only one I ever got was the guaranteed Red Gyarados in Silver Version, which was the last Pokémon game I played all the way through. You say that they still wouldn't be special even if you personally didn't use the easy methods because only the people who understand the mechanics and odds would still be impressed but I have to ask, hasn't that always been the case even before all the various methods to increase odds were introduced? If somebody cares enough to be impressed by a shiny, they're most likely also familiar with all the various methods and how the odds work while the people who aren't impressed wouldn't care even if you explained the ridiculous odds to them. A full-odds shiny is still just as rare as it ever was but only has whatever value you choose to afford it. The people who care about somebody else's shinies will still care just as much when they know you did it the hard way while the people who are only casually interested or just like the neat designs and don't give a damn about the challenge were never going to care anyway. The only things that have really changed are your perceptions and some increased accessibility.
I found this video after getting a shiny cetoddle in about 20 minutes during a special raid event thing in Violet, then seeing literally all of my friends also got one as well as all the other black shinies connected to the event. One of said friends has gotten 8 shiny carbinks from this event that’s so far been 2 days. My Cetoddle feels completely worthless and not special in the slightest, I feel nothing for having gotten it cuz literally everybody has one.
I still have to work for them in Pokemon go and it ends up costing a fortune. Shiny legendary and mythical Pokemon can only be hunted through Pokemon Go’s paywall and this is likely how shiny legendary Pokemon will be from now on. This is also the reason why PTC won’t release the old games on NSO since they know a lot of players will shiny hunt the legendary Pokemon in those games. They make more money off the hunts in Go than they would selling the games even if they were $200/e.
Should do something like come up with brand new variants like what Pokemon Crater used to do so people wont be upset having them be rare like 1 in 8k or whatever. Plus most modern pokemon look terible shiny with lots being barely noticibaly differences.
I disagree with your general statement. Yes, shinies are more common now, IF you do specific methods to make them more common. (E.X. Sparkling Power) And yes, PoGo has ABSURD shiny odds at points, but, you don’t HAVE to hunt using those methods. There’s a hundred different ways to hunt. You can hunt in the older games, or hunt without a shiny charm, or hell, do the shiny Jirachi/shiny Manaphy hunt if you’re crazy. You CAN increase your odds, but you don’t HAVE to.
I also think there’s something that you should’ve covered in the GO section and that’s the shiny mythical masterwork research. Basically, they’ll make a paid research, make it limited time, and lock a shiny mythical behind it. GO has some NASTY business practices.
They always has been for me. Aside from the fact that I've never ever found one except, of course, in pokemon go. They don't matter because to me stats are important. Not looks (that's why games based on cosmetics micro transactions hates me) and in pokemon go they are just another candy. Oh yeah.
In my opinion, shinys are worthless since a long time because of hacking. Everyone can pretend they worked hard to find their shiny while they juste used PKSM sooooo
Yeah I didn't agree with your thoughts at all. Don't know much about the PoGo section though. Though I look down on people who gen as a competitive player.
I disagree, I think it's a good thing that they're more like skins now, in fact we should have several "shiny" forms where they wear outfits that make them look like characters from other series and these forms should be unlocked by paying a monthly fee, who's ready for the PokéPass!? 🤩 inb4

The only things that have really changed are your perceptions and some increased accessibility.
yes
I found this video after getting a shiny cetoddle in about 20 minutes during a special raid event thing in Violet, then seeing literally all of my friends also got one as well as all the other black shinies connected to the event. One of said friends has gotten 8 shiny carbinks from this event that’s so far been 2 days. My Cetoddle feels completely worthless and not special in the slightest, I feel nothing for having gotten it cuz literally everybody has one.
Even without pokemon go the new sandwiches thing and everything make it far too simple and unfun to hunt
I used the new methods of farming and pokemon go and have never seen a shiny in my life..
All fair points!
Oh yeah.
Always have been 👀
In my opinion, shinys are worthless since a long time because of hacking. Everyone can pretend they worked hard to find their shiny while they juste used PKSM sooooo
They just don’t feel accomplishing to obtain I keep my sav shinies separate from other games I have zero fun hunting them
Yeah I didn't agree with your thoughts at all. Don't know much about the PoGo section though.
Though I look down on people who gen as a competitive player.
@gligarguy4010 My general idea is, if you wanna gen, go for it, if you get caught, deal with it.
@@kimolingo Fair enough.
@@kimolingohonestly very fair
You could have tried to hide that you are farming controversy clicks harder than you did lol.
Farming for clicks is really what youtube is about lmao, but not for controversy for me, more about opening a discussion
always have been lol
I disagree, I think it's a good thing that they're more like skins now, in fact we should have several "shiny" forms where they wear outfits that make them look like characters from other series and these forms should be unlocked by paying a monthly fee, who's ready for the PokéPass!? 🤩
