Spearhead From Space is my no. 1 as well. It's the first Doctor Who story I can distinctly remember. I was 6 when it was first transmitted in 1970 and I can remember that shortly after watching it, I was standing outside C&A's in Stockport, crying my eyes out because I was terrified that the dummies in the shop window would crash through the glass and shoot me.
Surprised Castrovalva was so low. I absolutely loved unraveling how the history of Castrovalva was forged by the Master. But I agree with most of things you say as usual. Can't wait for more rankings
Clara's initial rejection of the 12th Doctor in Deep Breath never set right with me. We had just come out of the 50th where Clara had interacted with two other incarnations of the Doctor as well as the setup to that episode The Name of the Doctor, where she entered his timestream and had encountered all of his incarnations ( @ least up to that point thank you very much Chris Chibnel), and yet she has a problem with the fact that he's got gray hair and lines on his face.... And wanted him to change back? Just wasn't well written by Moffitt.
Yeah but you can acknowledge someone used to be someone else before you met them but when they change from the person you met them as; it can be a lot harder to deal with. Clara knew the Doctor changed faces but he had never done that with her and she had never had to witness her friend's personality change drastically when she didn't want it to. It doesn't matter if she knew he did it before because it wasn't personal to her then.
@@TheMarioAdams I get your point, it just personally never set well with me and I think Vastra calling her out on it was a highlight of the episode for me. He said he couldnt regenerate anymore and this was it, time to die and she was so upset, then the timelords giv him a new set of regenerations (happy days) and clara is all ‘i dont know who you are anymore’ and wants to leave him??

Why do we love lists so much? I don't know, but it never gets boring. Anywho (sorry), here's my top 3: 1. Spearhead from Space (one of the first VHS releases I bought and a fine story which still stands up today) 2. Power of the Daleks (sacrilege that Troughton's first story was junked) 3. The Eleventh Hour (never dull, clever way to bring in a new companion and a great start to Matt Smith's Doctor - basically, run! Brilliant.)
I wonder how many people posting on here have actually seen "The Power of the Daleks"? Not the animation or a reconstruction, but the actual episodes. The ratings for its one and only UK transmission were between 7.5 - 8 million viewers per episode. Given that a fair proportion of those viewers would have been children at the time (as I was), there are probably several million people still alive who saw it. I was lucky enough to see this story no less than THREE times: the original BBC transmission, then a further two times after my family emigrated to Australia in 1967. So I remember the story quite well...let's hope that somewhere, somehow, some if not all of the episodes have survived, and may be found one day...

@Jack the Film Fanatic and even those two had some really good stories (or if failing that, something entertaining at least). I think Pertwee (along with Eccleston and Troughton) probably had the most consistently good run in the show
It's a shame his stories are the most drawn out of all the classic who. They are most great, but sooooo unecessary long. I think I would've liked his era more if the stories were shorter. Very boring
Spearhead from Space would have to be my pick. It perfectly gets Jons era off to a solid start, feels like a Pertwee story and feels like his era, and remains such an iconic adventure even now. I also have a soft spot for Robot, due to Tom, Elisabeth and Michaels performance and an enjoyable story.
Love your videos, Wingy! I think this is pretty on the ball but it’s tough choosing between Spearhead and Power. Patrick saved Who and it’s such a great story!
After rewatching the TV movie recently, I realised that I really like Eric Robert’s as the master xD I just love how cold and smooth he is, I also love when he hissed at the doctor “what do you know of last chances?!”
My personal ranking: 1, Spearhead from Space 2, The Power of the Daleks 3, The Christmas Invasion 4, The Eleventh Hour 5, Deep Breath 6, Robot 6, Rose 7, The Movie 8, An Unearthly Child 9, Castrovalva 10, The Woman who Fell to earth 11, Time and the Rani 12, The Twin Dilemma
The Christmas Invasion in underrated. Yes, it was bad to not have the doctor for the majority of the episode, but his apearence at the end just makes it for. Totally worth it imo. David Tennant just kill his lines and he ows the scene very quickly. One of my favorite moments from him
I'm glad you put Time and the Rani before The Twin Dilemma, I don't like either of them (Although I'm by no means a fan of most of Classic Who), but I believe that The Twin Dilemma is very marginally better. I believe that Castrovalva is better than The Woman who Fell to Earth. Though the episode is arguably worse, Davison really sold it for me. Whittaker doesn't really do anything to show she's in trauma, unlike Tennant, Smith and Capaldi.
Tricky. I would say: 1. The Power of the Daleks 2. The Eleventh Hour 3. Spearhead from Space 4. Rose 5. Robot 6. An Unearthly Child 7. Deep Breath 8. Castrovalva 9. The Movie 10. The Christmas Invasion 11. Time and the Rani 12. The Woman Who Fell to Earth 13. The Twin Dilemma
For me i like looking back on deep breath because when i first saw it a local theater decided to do a bigish showing of the episode and it was so great to be around people and enjoying the show
The worst thing about the junking was that even though they wiped the original tapes, they had copies of all the episodes on film (except Feast Of Steven, I think) but just threw them all in a skip. Luckily some were salvaged, but it's just mad to think someone would just take cannisters of film and just throw them out.
Yep. And apparently someone at the BBC continued junking Doctor Who even after the policy ended 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ so they were destroying history FOR NO REASON.
1. The Eleventh Hour 2. An Unearthly Child (I only count the first part - drops down a couple of places if you insist on including the "10,000 BC" episodes) 3. Spearhead from Space 4. Robot 5. The Christmas Invasion 6. The Woman Who Fell to Earth 7. Deep Breath 8. Rose 9. Power of the Daleks (would probably be a lot higher if it actually existed in the archives) 10. "The Enemy Within"/TV Movie 11. Castrovalva 12. Time and the Rani (though Wingy is very wrong about the rest of Season 24) 13. The Twin Dilemma
I appreciate how high up on the list you've put the movie! Cheesy in parts, but McGann really does an amazing job. Other favorites are Eleventh Hour and Deep Breath, as well as Spearhead from Space!

1. The Eleventh Hour 2. Spearhead 3. Power 4. Rose 5. Deep Breath 6. Robot 7. An unearthly child 8. Castrovlava 9. TV Movie 10. The Twin Dilemma- I think the only criticism is that it shouldn't have been a finale because you've got some time to either reject or stay with your doctor 11. The Christmas Invasion- Some shoe-horned moments and characters. 12. The Woman who fell to Earth- Watching paint dry 13. Time and the Rani- Mel should stop screaming, this could have been a Christmas Special
For me, from worst to best: The Twin Dilemma Time and the Rani The Christmas Invasion TV movie Deep Breath Castrovalva An Unearthly Child The Woman Who Fell To Earth The Power of the Daleks (might be higher if I got to see the original) Rose Robot The Eleventh Hour Spearhead from Space
I have always been a fan of the pertwee era mainly because it had the brigadier in it and he has always been my favourite companion and I know there are some who say that the brigadier wasn't a companion because he didn't travel in the tardis but the doctor had been exiled

Deep Breath (Not a Capaldi fan) 9. An Unearthly Child (don’t revisit often) 8. Rose 7. Robot (Pertwee was my Doctor I didn’t like Baker at all at first) 6. The Twin Dilemma 5. Castrovalva (Love Davison and his era) 4. Power of the Daleks 3. TV Movie (I adore McGann’s Doctor) 2. Spearhead from Space 1 Eleventh Hour ( The most amazing. So much so he knocked “my” Doctor off top spot) Top video Wingy! More Who soon please!!!
Wasn’t there a Fleetwood Mac song in a Scorsese looking scene in Spearhead from Space? I think it was related to the autons being assembled, but I could be WAY off?
Honestly, Troughton to me is the least talked about but he is honestly perfect in just about every scene. I almost forget about him sometimes just because not many people revisit the 60's enough for doctor who. Power of the Daleks is phenomenal and my absolute favorite from him is The Mind Robber (it's the first one i watched so I'm a tad biased). I've never been disappointed by a Troughton story

My Mum had watched since the 60's. At the end of Twin Dilemma when Colin says "if you like it or not" she said "I don't like this anymore" and didn't watch again until 2005. JNT was an idiot.

I don't know why I watch these. I adore these bottom two stories. I actually loved the Twins. The Woman Who Fell To Earth is easily in the top 5 too. Hey ho, I knew what I was watching lol
Nearing the end of Smith's run in a New Who rewatch currently. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I feel as though a decent amount of Eleven's run rides on the coattails of "The Eleventh Hour." It feels natural in Series 5 because it's all part of a character arc. But once we dip into Series 6, and we're still referencing fish fingers and custard and bringing up the image of Amelia waiting for her Raggedy Doctor, I can't help but feel like they're going for a little bit of emotional manipulation. Many of these later references feel less like meaningful motifs and more like Moffat going, "hey, remember how good The Eleventh Hour was? Well, we're mentioning it again, so this episode must be good too, right?" I just feel like at some point we need to move the characters beyond that arc and give them new stories to define their relationships and development.
I agree with you I remember at the time being annoyed anytime they brought up stuff like that to get an emotional response to it. Stories do have their running gags & themes throughout their duration but the “pond era” of the show they did it so often that it got annoying. Fish fingers & custard was a funny quirky moment in the eleventh hour, bringing it up multiple times afterwards to make us feel emotional/nostalgic kinda ruined it.
11. Time and the Rani 10. The Twin Dilemma 9. An Unearthly Child 8. The Christmas Invasion 7. Castrovalva 6. Rose 5. Spearhead from Space 4. TV Movie 3. Robot 2. Power of the Daleks 1. The Eleventh Hour I haven't seen Woman Who Fell to Earth and it's been a really long time since I've seen Deep Breath, so I don't remember it really well.
1. Spearhead From Space 2. Power of The Daleks 3. Castrovalva (this one is a personal favourite as it was the first classic who serial I watched) 4. Eleventh Hour 5. Robot 6. Deep Breath 7. Enemy Within 8. The Woman Who fell To Earth 9. Rose 10. Twin Dilemma 11. The Christmas Invasion (Sorry I really don't like this one) 12. Time and The Rani
My least favourites are TWWFTE, TATR. TTD. Agree with the ranking of most of the others. I do like Castrovalva. My top picks would be TEH, DB, POTD, AUC.
Personally I think that The Power of the Daleks should be number 1, because as the 2nd Doctors first story, it’s amazing, but I see your point for putting Spearhead From Space in the first position. As for the junking but, I can understand getting rid of episodes, which is criminal, but why would the BBC junk Patrick Troughton’s first story? What you said is true, those six episodes are an essential part of the show.
I'd put Castrovalva and Rose higher up. Rose was a great re-introduction to the show, better than the TV movie as it's better to be from Rose's POV than from the Doctor's. The whole Logopolis-Castrovalva regeneration was to me the best ever. Took 4 episodes for the Doctor to be himself again. Spearhead is a great story even without the regeneration. Robot is saved by Baker's performance. Hard to judge Power of the Daleks. The Eleventh Hour is probably the best New Who 1st.

My rankings from worst to best Twin Dilemma Time and the Rani Woman who Fell to Earth Christmas Invasion Casteovalva Unearthly Child TV Movie Robot Rose Deep Breath Power of the Daleks Spearhead from Space Eleventh Hour
Only changes I would make for my own would be Woman Who Fell to Earth being last (partly for all the reasons stated here and party for being, although by no means the worst of the Chibnall era, its the first and starts the bastardization of the show but even worse it got my hopes up with a dark sense of atmosphere and somewhat interesting monster design) and moving Castrovalva up; although its by no means as good as Spearhead or Eleventh Hour, it is my favourite (biased as Davison is fav Doctor admittedly) as it does what it needs to do: introduce the 5th Doctor as both a good character but also as a different one from the recently departed Tom Baker - no minor task. The companions also get some good stuff as although Nyssa and Tegan are only on their 3rd and 2nd story respectively, they have to take centre stage and battle the Master, deal with a regenerating Doctor, stop the TARDIS being destroyed in the big bang and solve the puzzle of Castrovalva with the Doctor. Also like Adric being captured by the Master so he still has involvement in the story unlike a lot of season 19 where companions often end up serving next to no purpose. I like lots of other stuff in here too including the music, location work and the introspective theme of a broken identity with the disjointed town of Castrovalva reflecting that of the Doctor's own fragmented mind as he struggles to remember his identity. By the end this identity arc is resolved as he remembers who he is but with a new persona (distancing the Tom Baker one totally and successfully) and I feel he sells it to the audience that he's the Doctor. That's what a post-regeneration story needs to do and I feel it does this even if the story itself around this is dull to some. Also love the Escher design and Castrovalvans wearing bins on their heads! :)
@@nathanielfarkas746 For me personally it is and its the one I'd least want to revisit. However sure objectively it may not be the worst but for me there's not much in it between both Twin Dilemma and Time and the Rani with it. It had a decent premise but it lets itself down by being a Chibnall script with classic tropes such as exposition dumps, arbitrary countdowns (unsatisfactorily resolves off screen I might add) and too many characters running around who have nothing to do with the plot. It chokes itself by introducing too much at once and as usual he can't pay half of it off at all and nothing and no one feels like they get time to breath or develop. It also feels as unoriginal as a knock off mars bar from Aldi in some places as it borrows elements from 11th hour and other stories such as the Doctor being quirky & passing out and usual post-reg cringey dialogue. Now this in itself is fine but disappointing for the first total new start in 8 years and a series that presented and marketed itself as being so new and radical. It just felt like a re hash in many ways. However its probably the only Chibnall script I even come close to liking from his era and of course I won't try and stop people from liking it. I said Castrovalva is my fav and I doubt many will agree with me as its not the best and I know that but can still enjoy it.
@@friendlyotaku9525 'although by no means the worst [episode] of the Chibnall era, its the first'. My bad for omitting 'episode' from the previous clause but my meaning was that because its the first episode of the era and therefore sets up elements that have contributed to Doctor Who's current state, it is the beginning of the show's downfall. Similarly, if you talk about the show's cancellation in 1989 you can trace it back to and therefore kinda have to mention The Leisure Hive in 1980 to provide context of where the problems originated. My point was that on first viewing I actually didn't dislike it. It wasn't perfect but it did the job it needed to but then everything that came after has been fairly to abysmally shit and now the show is in a worse state than in 1989. Therefore although on first viewing I thought it was alright, with hindsight it has to take some of the flack for the era by default due to it being the catalyst for it.
@@dexterhill5843 "the show is in a worse state than 1989" this is objectively wrong because in 1989... the show was literally axed whereas in 2022 it isn't even close to that and has a brighter future than ever. not just the worst in Classic Who but I'd argue worst in all of Doctor Who. It made the show look like a laughing stock - thankfully McCoy's last 2 seasons were MUCH better and some of my favourites in the entire show!
Many thanks, as usual, good Sir :) & *BEAUTIFUL* to see you finally place something Eccleston (hands down the worst Dr) related in a low position on a list

7, The Movie

Christmas Invasion far too high, otherwise I can agree on this.
@@Nikioko I'd swap 3 and 6 but good list
The Christmas Invasion in underrated. Yes, it was bad to not have the doctor for the majority of the episode, but his apearence at the end just makes it for. Totally worth it imo. David Tennant just kill his lines and he ows the scene very quickly. One of my favorite moments from him
You always make me laugh out loud with your very blunt and honest comments!!
I love your videos!
Tricky. I would say:
1. The Power of the Daleks
2. The Eleventh Hour
3. Spearhead from Space
4. Rose
5. Robot
6. An Unearthly Child
7. Deep Breath
8. Castrovalva
9. The Movie
10. The Christmas Invasion

Spearhead From Space was the first story I was frightened by as child in 2004. Then of course a year later came The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
For me i like looking back on deep breath because when i first saw it a local theater decided to do a bigish showing of the episode and it was so great to be around people and enjoying the show
I can't wait for more Doctor Who content! Keep going Wingy! Personally I think that Castrovalva is one of Davison's best stories
The worst thing about the junking was that even though they wiped the original tapes, they had copies of all the episodes on film (except Feast Of Steven, I think) but just threw them all in a skip. Luckily some were salvaged, but it's just mad to think someone would just take cannisters of film and just throw them out.
Totally different world at the time, mental how much its changed
Yep. And apparently someone at the BBC continued junking Doctor Who even after the policy ended 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ so they were destroying history FOR NO REASON.
"Did he push him or did he fall?"... "...it just sort of fell flat towards the end."
I guess that would have been the outcome either way!
17:52 a 100% justified rant. PREACH!
1. The Eleventh Hour
2. An Unearthly Child (I only count the first part - drops down a couple of places if you insist on including the "10,000 BC" episodes)
3. Spearhead from Space
4. Robot
5. The Christmas Invasion
6. The Woman Who Fell to Earth
7. Deep Breath

10. The Twin Dilemma- I think the only criticism is that it shouldn't have been a finale because you've got some time to either reject or stay with your doctor
11. The Christmas Invasion- Some shoe-horned moments and characters.
12. The Woman who fell to Earth- Watching paint dry
13. Time and the Rani- Mel should stop screaming, this could have been a Christmas Special
We don’t have patrick troughton’s dibut serial, but we have colin’s and sylvester’s...no justice😂

Spearhead is my favourite! I will always rewatch it.
They junked all those 1960's episodes under the assumption that no-one in the future would be interested in them.

Deep Breath
Castrovalva
An Unearthly Child
The Woman Who Fell To Earth
The Power of the Daleks (might be higher if I got to see the original)

Wasn’t there a Fleetwood Mac song in a Scorsese looking scene in Spearhead from Space? I think it was related to the autons being assembled, but I could be WAY off?
Yes. It was Oh Well.

Well, we're mentioning it again, so this episode must be good too, right?"
I just feel like at some point we need to move the characters beyond that arc and give them new stories to define their relationships and development.

I love power of the daleks
I'd put Castrovalva and Rose higher up. Rose was a great re-introduction to the show, better than the TV movie as it's better to be from Rose's POV than from the Doctor's. The whole Logopolis-Castrovalva regeneration was to me the best ever. Took 4 episodes for the Doctor to be himself again. Spearhead is a great story even without the regeneration. Robot is saved by Baker's performance. Hard to judge Power of the Daleks. The Eleventh Hour is probably the best New Who 1st.

I really like castrovelva you do make some great points though
The woman who fell to earth is far from one of the worst opening stories.
"first and starts the bastardization of the show" what's this even supposed to mean.
