My opinion probably isn’t a popular one but my favourite companion EVER has to be Mickey smith! :) I love his character development from this loser boy who everyone forgets about and he just lives a normal life, to being this badass man that ends up helping saving the world (twice!) he’s a really sweet, funny and relatable character. I genuinely love him so much lmao
Before I first hopped on the Internet I had no idea that I was supposed to dislike Clara 😂. She's not my favourite or anything but I always thought she was an alright companion. I've recently started watching the Pertwee era for the first time and the Brigadier is already well on his way to being one of the greats for me
Sarah-Jane Smith. Smart , sassy , independent and inquisitive . Plus gorgeous with a cheeky sense of humour. The only criticism of the late Elisabeth Sladen is I felt that she did overact the part on occasion but she was brilliant at fleshing out the character of Sarah-Jane when the script gave her little to say or do.
The consolation is that he's scarcely a Companion anyway, at least not in terms of the TV series. Having one trip in the TARDIS in two adjoining episodes does not a Companion make.
Interesting list. 1. I'd move Tegan up to B, maybe A, as best 5th Doctor companion, a good foil to Davison's Doctor. 2. Turlough move up to C at least. Interesting character. 3. Agree with Adric ranking C, definitely not as bad as many say 4. Agree with Rose ranking C, ruined her with that romance plot, but yes she was great in Day of The Doctor 5. Clara was at least a B, until she stayed with Capaldi, and just didn't fit, more a case of outlasted her welcome.
I'm surprised how similar my opinion is compared to yours on the companions. Only two or three characters were more than one rank away. My favorite companion though is easily Romana II. There's just something about the dual time lord dynamic that sets the duo of her and Tom Baker's doctor above everyone else for me. It puts their stories in a different perspective that is very fresh. It's two alien almost-equals just going out and exploring the universe and I love that idea.
I’m just gonna say my favourite and least favourite. Favourite: Clara- why? Because Jenna Coleman is my favourite actress, she’s extremely versatile and sold Clara to me and I love her arc. Also met Jenna 4 times and she’s a lovely person. Least favourite: Peri- honestly used to be rose but with rose I actually think Billie is a decent actress, but as much as Nicola is a lovely person, I don’t rate her as an actress and Peri as a character I don’t really connect with. That’s probably controversial but idc it’s my opinion 😂
I really enjoyed you ranking list, most of which I sort of agreed with. My favourite companion is Sarah Jane Smith. My strongest disagreement with your list is Tegan Jovanka who would be in much higher up for me.
I honestly agree with most of this list with the exception being that I would bump up most of the 1st doctor companions by a bit. Viki is one of my favorite companions of that era, and her Ian and Barbra make up my second favorite tardis team in the black and white era (under Jamie and Zoe). Katerina I would also put pretty high up solely because of Big Finish's The Daughter of the Gods, which is a top tier multi doctor story with the first and second doctor which really works to retroactively improve The Dalek's Master Plan. It's really reflective on how the 1st doctor in particular views his companions, especially since he hasn't actually lost any of them (as in they died) at that point. He becomes almost a secondary antagonist as the 2nd doctor works to restore the original timeline of The Dalek's Master Plan, which would inevitably result in Katerina's death, and the 1st doctor would sooner see entire cities destroyed before he lets one of his companions die (which the 2nd doctor points out he did just a story prior in the Myth Makers, when The Doctor helped plan and execute the sacking of Troy, Katerina's home city, in order to save Viki). It's the first time I feel like the 1st doctor being the youngest and most inexperienced with loss is really done well in a multi doctor story, as in the classic show he is portrayed as the wise old man, and the less said about Twice Upon a Time the better. That sort of spewed off into a tangent, but I just really think people should check out Daughter of the Gods if they haven't already.
My opinions and yours are quite similar on this topic! Thanks for ranking Liz Shaw so highly; I feel she's the great "one that got away" character in DW and the most underrated companion of them all.
Agreed, @@ClineAI. I feel like with Vicki, they had a chance to correct the opportunity they missed with Susan, but they dropped the ball with Vicki too. And, let's face it, she deserved a much better exit than what she got in "The Myth Makers."
Also ended up with Adric as the highest Davison companion?!? Personally on individual performances Tegan in Castrovalva and Kinda is really good and Nyssa in Arc of Infinity and The Visitation are as well imo but I get that its based off their whole time on the show
The first Dr. Who I ever saw was the last half hour of Logopolis. First proper episode was Castavalva. I was 13. I still have a crush on Nyssa to this day. I think she should have been ranked higher, but I’m obviously biased. I do agree with your assessment, however. She could have been so much more than just super-cute.
Wingy as mentioned in the top 10 i also posted a companion called hex is my third favourite. I think you will love him as well, to start with him listen in the order: Project twilight, Project lazarus, the harvest then just the adventures with hex in order.
Steven is "S". He's incredible in Masterplan and Massacre. Must be honest When it comes to Rose, I like her in her seasons overall, but they went way to far with the doctor and rose romance stuff, plusbi feel like she really causes damage later on, including in my opinion affecting Martha's character in a negative way. I really can't make my mind up about her, but the negatives I have about Rose have nothing to do with Billie, she did a great job with her and in the 50th anniversary special
I know you haven't delved into the Big Finish stuff, but Bernice Summerfield I think is one of my favorites. She's what River Song SHOULD have been. I mean, she basically IS River Song, but without the bullshit back story of being some kind of hybrid Time Lord Human thing - she's an archaeologist, an occasional time traveler, meets the Doctor out of sync with his personal timeline, smart, acerbic wit. My absolute favorite is her being paired with the alternate universe version of the Doctor portrayed by David Warner. Their dynamic is just fantastic.
It's all their matter of opinion:) as I really like companions such as Ian, Barbara and Stephen As they will not let the Dr get away with being callous. But i do love the team up of Sarah Harry and the Doctor. That is definitely one of my favourite segments!
I think you overused "S." I would have reserved that for the absolute legends who transcended their eras. Brigadier? Yes. Sarah Jane? Yes. Jack? Maybe. The rest are outstanding, but I would have ranked them at A. I think you were a little too harsh with Tegan whose abrasive nature was a perfect foil for Davison's milder Doctor. I would have rated Tegan a B. As for Clara... I don't think she deserves an F. She's definitely not my favorite, but she had some really good moments in the show. I would have made her a D+ - no higher than a C. And Rory? You did him a disservice. He had some of the best character development in the show. Started out as the bumbling, awkward guy living in Amy's shadow to a guy not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the Doctor and tell him off and absolutely EARNED the Doctor's respect, not to mention Amy's and River's. Also who can forget the badassery that was the Last Centurion?! Had to be at least a B.
My top 10, doesn't include anyone like Jack or the Brig: 10. Romana 2 9. Molly O Sullivan (big finish) 8. Evelyn Smythe (big finish) 7. Lucie Miller (big finish) 6. Martha Jones 5. Liv Chenka (big finish) 4. Sarah Jane 3. Hex (big finish) 2. Ace 1. Jamie McCrimmon
#1 Sarah Jane Smith(ALWAYS). #2. Rose Tyler. #3 Jamie McCrimmon. #4 Donna Noble.#5 Jo Grant. #6 Tegan Jovanka. #7. Ian and Barbara(Tied). #8 Amy Pond. #9. Ace. #10. Leela.
Clara's a funny one for me. The impossible girl mystery was interesting but the problem with that was her character trait seemed to be her mystery more than anything else so she felt like a plot device rather than a character. So in series 8 she didn't have a lot to fall back onto once the mystery was solved and I feel Danny pink was introduced to try and fix this but I didn't feel like the two worked, had enough chemistry etc. So it just felt forced. I did like her a bit more in series 9 but I think by then it felt a bit too late. I always felt they made her too clever and this in a way worked when it came to face the raven which would have been great but they ruined that by having the doctor basically throw away all his morals to make her in a way invincible. I think twice upon a time means she has died but we don't know how long she travelled before that as she wasn't technically alive so wouldn't age. Basically could live longer than she would of naturally. I also don't like the fact the doctor shot the general which made him have to regenerate. Clara to me felt like just another companion. I mean I can't see the doctor doing that for Susan never mind anyone else
@@simonbutterfield4860 also I feel she ruined the 50th ending by being the one showing emotion rather than the doctor. Like it's the biggest moment in the doctors life. I wanted to see him wresting with his conscious, mentioning the whole reason he did what he had to do e.g. rassilons plan. But Clara just told him to save gallifrey and he did
We largely agree. I'd make a few changes, but barring a couple, nothing huge. My least favorite here is River Song; I really liked her originally in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, but she became so annoying and obnoxious that she's an easy 'F' for me. My favorite is of course the sublime Sarah Jane Smith. Part of my first TARDIS team as a kid when it was brought here to the states on PBS, and still love her so much. Sad that we lost Elisabeth Sladen so early.
Luckily, I don't class River as a Companion, but as a recurring guest character, as I see Captain Jack and the UNIT family. To me, they're no more Companions than Jackie Tyler or Kate Stewart were. I like them all (even if River came to bug me too!), but I reserve the special title of Companion for the Jamies, Sarah-Janes and Donnas of this world.
all ur opinions r very much respected. im just heart broken at the ranking of my favorite companion, vislor turlough. he is absolutely phenomenal in how different he is from the companion template of human female from modern day earth, vislor is an alien male from an alien planet (obviously thats where aliens r from). not only that but he also starts as a villain working for the black guardian trying to kill the doctor! then becomes a good person from travelling with him
human female from modern earth is only a modern day concept, look at the classics Susan, the doctors grand daughter, Gallifreyan like him, Nyssa, other world, Adric, annoying male math genius from E space, Leela, another planet and far future, the UNIT crew male soldiers, Jamie 17th century highlander, Zoo from the far future, the Romanas fellow time lord (or time LADY in this case) but yes, I like Turlough
Steven Taylor is awesome.. listen to more of the audio's. He is def one of the more improved companions...tho I liked him anyway. Where is Katrina and Sara kingdom
Generally agree. But, would put Captain Jack and Peri Brown on the next lower tier. Liz Shaw will always be one of my S ("Superior," But can hear Michael Wisher saying the word) companions. Romana #1, Mary Tamm would rate an A and Tegan I would rate higher too. Clara should have a special rating of BA for Bloody Awful. Clara is the only companion to threaten the life of the Doctor of her own free will and is the only companion who Leela would kill. On the whole great job! Agree also that the fall in love with the Doctor story lines is complete drivel.
Peri an A?????? WTF? Barbara and especially Ian deserve higher. They created the idea of a companion that alone should earn them a higher spot. I also think Mary Tamm was amazing. She was as smart as the doctor and so graceful and beautiful. They really did overdo the damsel in distress stuff with her though. Thank God you didn't put Rose higher, she's so overrated. I think you were a little harsh on Clara but all in all I think you're pretty spot on. Peri and A!!!! Sorry, I just can't get over this one.
Personally I'd put Nyssa a lot higher but at least wingy rates her as the best 5th Dr companion .Her potential was criminally underused but we do have Big Finish where she returns. Personally I think she's a more interesting character than Peri who I also would put in my top 10 but we all have preferences, but do find myself agreeing with a lot of the rankings here so good job 👍 worst companion Clara, best 2 troughton companions zoe and jamie I agreee
Ace? Edit: Beg your pardon, just watched the end of the video and didn’t realise you were doing three of them out of alphabetical order. Thought you’d forgotten her!
He's not really a Companion either, not with a "big C". Like the Brig and River Song, Jack is a recurring guest hero, but not a _proper_ "Doctor Who Companion" in the sense of a character whose function is to act as an audience identification figure.
Agree with a lot of this list, but the ones I majorly disagree with are: Jo Grant - While I don't hate her, I do think she was majorly inferior to Liz Shaw who was great, distinct, and different. Not a bad companion, but def not S tier. Maybe B. Romana II - I honestly kind of hated both Romanas. She was a little bit better than Romana I but I felt she was still a really boring character and wasn't very distinctive in my eyes. Probably D tier for me. Ian and Barbara - Purely on the respectability and what they did for the Doctor. If it wasn't for them, he'd still be a crochety old man who didn't care about humans. Would be in A or S tier. Liz Shaw - A tier Romana I - F tier Susan - She was just way too annoying and pretty bland as a character. D tier. Steven Taylor - One of two of my biggest disagreements with this list. I LOVED Steven as a companion. Easily my favorite First Doctor companion and one of my favorite companions period. I love the relationship between him and The Doctor, and despite not being family, they have a genuinely great father-son type of relationship. His exit (despite the story just being okay) was very touching. S tier for me. Victor/Vislor Turlough - I thought he got more interesting as time went on, and had a pretty good relationship with the Doctor. Not great by any means, but definitely not F tier. Maybe C or B. Vicki - The other big disagreement I had. She was one of my favorite First Doctor companions and pretty much the better version of Susan. She was quirky, funny, smart, and likable. I would rank her A tier.
S- Bill, Captain Jack, Donna, Sarah Jane, Ace, Clara A- Rory B- Amy, Graham, Nardole, Romana II, Yaz, Rose C- Mickey, River D- Martha, Mel E- Adam, Ryan
He's not really a Companion, though, but a recurring guest character. Same goes for the rest of the UNIT family, River and Captain Jack. If they were Companions, then so were Jackie Tyler, Kate Stewart and the Paternoster Gang :)
@@ftumschk true, but I do count them as companions tbh, just me I guess. Also if you count expanded media he does become a companion to Tom Baker in some audios called Demon Quest I think
@@ftumschk the 3rd doctors era was unique as he spent his first three years earthbound, he COULDNT travel, the time lords locked the knowledge of how to fly the TARDIS away from him, so the UNIT crew became his family and companions. but yes, the unit crew ,except for the brig, are earthbound friends, in THAT regard you CAN could Jackie, wilf kate and the PG
Am I the only one who thinks Sarah Jane Smith is a bit overrated? Always found her to be a tad annoying too. Please don't hurt me for saying that hahaha
There’s a few I disagree with: • I love Adric. He’s my 5th favourite. I love how intelligent he is and I love that Tardis team • Tegan is my 6th favourite. I love her development and particularly like her later on. She also has some hilarious moments. • Sarah Jane is towards the bottom because I only count her companion appearance and find her a bit too screamy • I love Ben because I love how hot headed he can be but he’s still caring at the same time particularly towards Polly. I actually prefer him to Polly. I find Polly somewhat forgettable • I find Victoria very irritating with her constant screaming. She has some nice moments but her screaming completely overshadows it. • I hate Susan with a passion. She’s currently my least favourite because she actively prevents me from going back to watch her episodes • I think Turlough is great pretty much all the way through. Although I will say the scene of him constantly pulling out the Crystal because laughable because he does it too much. • Jamie is my 3rd favourite behind Donna and Ace. I love his chemistry with Troughton and him being a highlander is definitely different and works really well. • Jo while I do like, find her quite overrated. She starts off a bit too reliant on The Doctor. It improves but not enough for her to be anywhere near the top. She’s like 15th for me.
The best companion will always be James Robert McCrimmon for me!
I LOVE Jamie! He's my favorite classic Who companion and in my top 5 overall.
Sarah Jane, Jamie, Romana 1, Ace and Donna are my favourites.

Pertwee’s era really nailed the “companion” formula. I think that’s why his is my favourite era.
Best - Brigadier, Ian, Barbara, SJS, Liz Shaw, Jamie,

Great list, and I'm broadly in agreement on most of these... apart from Clara, who's one of my faves. Hey, but that's the way it goes :)
Pretty much agree with the top two tiers. I think I would have moved Jamie to S and Jo Grant to A but otherwise pretty much my thoughts.

#1 Sarah Jane Smith(ALWAYS). #2. Rose Tyler. #3 Jamie McCrimmon. #4 Donna Noble.#5 Jo Grant. #6 Tegan Jovanka. #7. Ian and Barbara(Tied). #8 Amy Pond. #9. Ace. #10. Leela.
I don't think the hatred for Adric is unfair.
Top 5 - Jamie, Jo, Leela, Romana and Ace
Worst 5 - Dodo, Dodo, Dodo, Dodo and Dodo.
The only one i completely disagree with is Bill as a "C"... every rationale that was applied to the "A" and "S" selections applies to her in my view.
I was hoping Clara would grow on you after your Series 8, 9 rewatch. To me she is THE companion in my humble opinion.
@@peterthompson1989 the same for me as well. Clara's story line was done after S7 and there was nowhere else for her to go after that.
But Clara just told him to save gallifrey and he did
You should do a video on what you would do as showrunner
Donna is the best companion in my opinion- though i am HEAVILY biased towards new who
Best companions from classic who: Sarah Jane, Leela, Jamie, Jo & K-9. Donna is the best modern era companion.
I like Clara oswald cause I like looking at her.
Listen to the reaping for some great peri stuff
I think my top 5 are Jack, the Brigadier, Ace, Jamie and K9
I love how out of Davisons main companions, Adric is ranked the highest. Adric, who is one of the most hated companions ever. Shear poetry
I don't think any two people would have the exact same ranking. Mines probably reasonably close but I must admit I haven't seen much of Hartnells era.
I love Captain Jack Harkness as well
all ur opinions r very much respected. im just heart broken at the ranking of my favorite companion, vislor turlough. he is absolutely phenomenal in how different he is from the companion template of human female from modern day earth, vislor is an alien male from an alien planet (obviously thats where aliens r from). not only that but he also starts as a villain working for the black guardian trying to kill the doctor! then becomes a good person from travelling with him
human female from modern earth is only a modern day concept, look at the classics Susan, the doctors grand daughter, Gallifreyan like him, Nyssa, other world, Adric, annoying male math genius from E space, Leela, another planet and far future, the UNIT crew male soldiers, Jamie 17th century highlander, Zoo from the far future, the Romanas fellow time lord (or time LADY in this case) but yes, I like Turlough
@@julieeverett7442 i suppose ur right. i shouldve said 'majority'
@@danielbridger7113 true
@@julieeverett7442 but still, even leela, jamie and the unit soldiers were all humans
@@danielbridger7113 true, but they werent all contemporary British girls were they?
Hey I watch the invisible enemy the other day I actually didn’t really like that much.
Thought???
I like it for what it is but not one of the best
It’s decent nothing more nothing less
I think it's actually quite good but not top tier stuff
If you’re an old git like me who grew up in the 70s, K-9 is straight up into S!! Apart from that, pretty spot on!
Petition to move Yates to C
Clara the best companion.
Steven Taylor is awesome.. listen to more of the audio's. He is def one of the more improved companions...tho I liked him anyway.
Where is Katrina and Sara kingdom
Katrina and Sara Kingdom are down in the "Not seen or heard enough of them" category.
I cannot STAND Tegan. Glad to see I'm not the only one.
The only thing Dodo really did was keep Steven around for a few episodes more.
Someone who loves Leela as much as me, huzzah! And agree about her BS ending. boo.
Look at all these safe choices lol
Not safe, they're my actual opinions. Did you want me to put Sarah Jane in F to be edgy or something?
Peri an A?????? WTF? Barbara and especially Ian deserve higher. They created the idea of a companion that alone should earn them a higher spot. I also think Mary Tamm was amazing. She was as smart as the doctor and so graceful and beautiful. They really did overdo the damsel in distress stuff with her though. Thank God you didn't put Rose higher, she's so overrated. I think you were a little harsh on Clara but all in all I think you're pretty spot on. Peri and A!!!! Sorry, I just can't get over this one.
Forgot how much I missed the Clara hate from you 😂
S stands for Superb :)
Ace 100%
Personally I'd put Nyssa a lot higher but at least wingy rates her as the best 5th Dr companion .Her potential was criminally underused but we do have Big Finish where she returns. Personally I think she's a more interesting character than Peri who I also would put in my top 10 but we all have preferences, but do find myself agreeing with a lot of the rankings here so good job 👍
worst companion Clara, best 2 troughton companions zoe and jamie I agreee
I think Adric's higher than the other Davison companions.
@@EmerRaph fair enough some prefer Adric some prefer Tegan, personally I think Adric gets wayyy too much hate even if I prefer Nyssa myself.
Ace?
Edit: Beg your pardon, just watched the end of the video and didn’t realise you were doing three of them out of alphabetical order. Thought you’d forgotten her!
I agree with most, but Jack is too high. I don’t see him as being in the pantheon of the Brig, Donna, Jo, Leela, Sarah Jane, or Ace.
He's not really a Companion either, not with a "big C". Like the Brig and River Song, Jack is a recurring guest hero, but not a _proper_ "Doctor Who Companion" in the sense of a character whose function is to act as an audience identification figure.
Agree with a lot of this list, but the ones I majorly disagree with are:
Jo Grant - While I don't hate her, I do think she was majorly inferior to Liz Shaw who was great, distinct, and different.
Liz Shaw - A tier
Romana I - F tier
Susan - She was just way too annoying and pretty bland as a character.
Best is Sarah Jane, worst a tie adric and Rose
Sarah Jane
Leela
Romana II
No Way Donna is in 'S' tier - I found her so annoying. 'S' is for royalty like Brigadier, Ace, Jo Grant and Sarah Jane... Maybe Rose
K9 going into B.... heart breaks unsubscribes 😉
S- Bill, Captain Jack, Donna, Sarah Jane, Ace, Clara
A- Rory
B- Amy, Graham, Nardole, Romana II, Yaz, Rose
C- Mickey, River
D- Martha, Mel
E- Adam, Ryan
Top 10 in no order
1.Ace
2.Leela
3.Jamie
4.Donna
5.Sarah-Jane
6.Captain jack
7.Vicki
8.Zoe
9.Lucie
10.Martha
Clara is the very definition of a non character
I actually like Clara :/
MIKE? F?
Offence taken 😱😱
😂😂 but in all seriousness great video, agree with most of your points, and my list is rather similar!
Hard to argue with any of that tbh. Except maybe I would put Bill a bit higher. I loved Bill, but possibly because she was such a relief after Clara!
Am I the only one who thinks Sarah Jane Smith is a bit overrated? Always found her to be a tad annoying too. Please don't hurt me for saying that hahaha
There’s a few I disagree with:
• I love Adric. He’s my 5th favourite. I love how intelligent he is and I love that Tardis team
• Tegan is my 6th favourite. I love her development and particularly like her later on. She also has some hilarious moments.
• Sarah Jane is towards the bottom because I only count her companion appearance and find her a bit too screamy
• I love Ben because I love how hot headed he can be but he’s still caring at the same time particularly towards Polly. I actually prefer him to Polly. I find Polly somewhat forgettable
• I find Victoria very irritating with her constant screaming. She has some nice moments but her screaming completely overshadows it.
• I hate Susan with a passion. She’s currently my least favourite because she actively prevents me from going back to watch her episodes
• I think Turlough is great pretty much all the way through.
I had to pause the video at Ace going into the S category 😩 Sorry Wingy,no,not everyone loves her,big fat F for me in the 2nd worst era of WHO
