Hey everyone - the usual caveats here: UA-cam is currently experiencing profound issues in promptly encoding 4K and high quality 1080p versions of our content - all of our next-gen console videos are mastered at 4K unless we mention otherwise. Right now, we have no idea when higher quality versions will resolve but we are in touch with UA-cam support to hopefully get this situation addressed.
Both consoles are impressive this gen, p we've comed along way from how outdated the Xbox one and the PS4 where whey they got released, this time around they're closer to PC Than ever!

Saw lots of playstation people complaining about the original xbox showcase they did when Sony didn't even give out review consoles yet, and xbox fanboys complaining when they were commenting on the PS5 internals. Hell, I even saw sony fanboys complaining in the PS5 video cause they mentioned the Series X. All for a box that does nothing but play games for them.

It's insane how UA-cam chose precisely this time of the year to shit the bed with video encoding. It has been going on for well over a month now and they seem to give absolutely zero fucks about fixing it. This is what monopoly looks like.

Glad there's some give and take going on here. Each console can take a win in an area and neither hurts too bad overall. People can take a deep breath before yelling again
Seems completely fair. And it still heavily plays into the fact that there isn’t really a bad system this time round, only ones catering to different audiences with different needs.
Both run it almost identical except 2 setpiece moment when PS5 has drops for few seconds. 120hz few places Xbox drops few more frames than PS5. Rest almost identical Take a deep breath fanboys. You don't have anything to fight on this one
Yup agree .. both have highs and lows .. i actually expect this for the rest of the generation .. I wouldn't say that. Being even is bad for Series X since Series X is like 20% more powerful so it should look a lot better on Series X. The fact it doesn't is worrying.
@@destruction3605 It wouldn't even consider those "lows", the drops in fps don't happen frequently at all and like Alex said 95% of the time the game runs perfect. Solid job by devs to get the game running how it should on both consoles

They’re as authoritative and professional as it gets when it comes to performance and image quality comparisons.
I don't think it would affect it too much. At least for me, on PC, I get around 140fps on Cod at 120fov. Lowering to it to 80fov, same as console, only increases it by 5fps.
This game is crashes often on my ps5 and had some significant frame rate drops while ADS in and out. I believe these issues will get fixed. I just love using adaptive trigger so hopefully.
I'm quite confused why but I got almsot identical graphic quality like series X on my Series S. I installed all extensions of hd quality patch on series s
I’m glad that ray tracing mode actually hits 60 fps. I plan to play through the campaign with that enabled. Otherwise it’s all 120 fps mode for me in multiplayer.
That's the best way to play, imo. I've been doing that on PC for years. "Immersive" settings for single player, "competitive" settings for multiplayer.

My theory is that RDNA2 prefers higher clock speeds for standard rasterised rendering, whereas it has a ray accelerator per CU so will obviously prefer the more CUs in series X for ray tracing, this would explain the better 120fps performance on PS5 and the better RT performance on series X, it also scales to other games such as Valhalla running better on PS5 but DMCV running better on series X with RT, interesting topic though and something worth looking into with the pc RNDA2 cards
Yea like DMC5 it performs better on XB with RT and better in high FPS mode on PS5 .. either way looks great on both consoles .. no matter what you have you will be happy either way
This sounds about spot on to me. @Alistair did you watch the same video I did? They said the ps5 is just edging out the series x on the 120hz mode and it makes sense that the cu count in the Xbox is going to give it a bit of an edge with raytracing exactly like Jack says.
this is true but in the mean time VRR means all this performance stuff is moot on series x and eventually PS5 once they get that working. In fact this gen resolution and frame rate do not matter. Native resolution is almost dead and pointless waste of resources with all the reconstruction techniques that will be used and with VRR who cares about frame rate dips on either console?

It's the same in games like Spider-Man, Watch Dogs: Legion and many other modern games, and I'm guessing also in Cyberpunk 2077 when its launched. It's an odd decision to see reflections in water disappear just because you look down slightly. I thought that Ray-Tracing was meant to solve the field of view issue and reflections and shadows appear from out of view, but hardware limitations are showing in this instance I guess. Hopefully when they improve on this in future they find a way to have everything on screen work as intended.
Its funny when we talk about frame rate drops in the terms of "chugging" when in reality the gameplay is still completely smooth. Coming from the era of lower strength PCs and consoles with 30 fps max if we had a frame rate hit then it was noticeably choppy and laggy and skippy. When we are talking about a trivial amount of frame difference at the higher frame rate levels then we are just hyper analyzing it because if the game for 99% of the time runs at a almost locked fps and the entire time the gameplay is buttery smooth and the only thing you got was a 10-20 fps millisecond drop in frames in a demanding spot of a game then really that is not something to critique about the game. If it was impacting the overall performance and experience of the game then totally, write it down as a point to point out but this is just minor trivial stuff. Im really surprised to see such good performances from both consoles with the features they are providing, i think we all thought they were offering too much and were only going to deliver on a portion of those promises.
It must be said.. Its better to point out the issues, the developers actually listen to digital foundry analysis,.. In the end it will benefit on pc, remember 99% of the games on pc are ps4 port..hehehe.. Its better to point out this issues..in the end this will benefit on pc
@@MrBenedick14 We are starting to see more of a case for VRR on both consoles and PC because frame rates become less important as well as having a locked frame rate as long as the frame rate is high enough. I have to wonder what is taking Sony so long to enable that feature on the PS5.
If you come from that era then you know that people were just as bad about this crap as they are now. Maybe not in UA-cam comments sections, but the forum wars were rough, as were the playground wars. And it's not just consoles, the nvidia vs ATi wars were just as bad as the Sony vs. MS or Nintendo vs. Sega shit. People buy into a brand and don't want to think they made the wrong choice, this has always been the case. And yeah, they'll overanalyze every frame and zoom in on every texture to look for any edge over the competition. In my experience it came to a fever pitch around the time the Xbone and ps4 came out. Things got nasty and DF was right here to fan the flames more than anyone, especially once the One was shown to fall behind in most every game. Sony fans acting like jackasses about it, MS fans being salty as hell... just assholes all around back then. DF owes their fortunes to fanboys, they are the ones giving them all the clicks and views. "Normal" people don't care about these insignificant differences, they just play what they have and buy whatever hardware can play the games they like.

Is the reason the series x performs better in ray tracing because of the total CUs and ps5 having better performance without ray tracing because of the gpu being clocked higher? I could be completely wrong as I am more a console player than pc but I wonder if thats why.
@@destruction3605 99% sure that's the right take. Raytracing is very compute heavy (series x has 52 compute units compared to ps5 36 compute units). But ps5 has a unified cache on the cpu and is clocked higher which helps with high fps scenarios.
So I guess this team had better tools than the others? Dunno about y'all but I'm surprised at the PS5s performance across a wide range of games at 120hz. It was never anything Sony marketed ... At all really until the very end. Pre-launch you had people thinking the system couldn't even do 60fps lol. Now it is doing as good or better than a stronger system at those framerates Microsoft talked about endlessly for months leading up to launch. So yeah very impressed. My personal take. The PS5s much faster GPU and much more efficient cache management is allowing it to push way, way over it's weight from the jump. Bodes EXTREMELY well for the future.
Clock speeds are just a part of the equation. Series X is ultimately the "faster" machine by having so many more CUs and consequently more TFLOPS. Also, cache scrubbers only spring into action when the SSD is read, they don't serve as a general GPU-boosting tool.
@@phloppywhoppy7476 more cache efficiency is perhaps the best, and cheapest, way to boost GPU performance. One of the largest hits a GPU can take during general performance is when there is a cache miss of any variety which causes the GPU to have to send a request to the CPU to find and remap the missing addresses as it doesn't have the data it needs to pull. That takes time and it is something every single programming team has to account for. There is 0% chance Sony put in those cache scrubbers only for SSD data reads. It is there for all data reads including from main memory where it would be needed most. Yeah the PS5 was built up as a streaming machine but that doesn't mean the cache scrubbers can only be activated by only the Coherency chip, that would be a complete waste. Those cache scrubbers will no doubt be imployed during any moments where cache needs to be scrubbed and rewritten.

@@chrisc6874 I’d say it could since there is that resistance so it can take millisecond more time to press the triggers or mess you up if you don’t pull it down far enough for the trigger mechanism to fire a shot. But for those that are dont take the game that seriously, I’d say you’re fine . It just needs some time to get used to since the triggers for aiming do add a lot of resistance. I kinda wish it was the other way around where they would make the trigger to fire a shot feel heavier depending on the gun but most of the resistance is when aiming. "overall better" meaning a few frames higher on 120Hz (which you're not going to notice compared to 60FPS, aswell as VRR). Resolution wise and graphic wise, they look basically the same. They all run great on both Xbox Series X and PS5.

Series X hasn't had any major issue on 60fps so no the scenario is still the same
Clock speeds are just a part of the equation.

You can always lower the intensity of the triggers though so it’s a good start to go with lower intensity then work your way up if you’re having issues.
