Principality Cardiff Half Marathon
Sunday 6 October 2024
The Principality Building Society Cardiff Half Marathon has grown into one of the largest and most exciting road races in the United Kingdom. It is now one of Europe’s largest half marathons and is Wales’ largest mass participation and multi-charity fundraising event.
The event has grown significantly since it was founded by Barnardo’s in 2003 when 1,500 runners took part. It now attracts a mass race field of over 27,500 registered runners alongside world-class athletes in a trio of fiercely contested men’s, women’s and wheelchair elite races.
It hosts the Welsh Half Marathon Championships annually and has hosted the World (2016) and Commonwealth (2018) Half Marathon Championships. It has been awarded an Elite Road Race Label by World Athletics.
The race is a member of the SuperHalfs, a global series of the world’s most prestigious half marathons including races in Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen, Cardiff and Valencia.
Its flat, fast course passes all of the city’s most breathtaking scenery and iconic landmarks including Cardiff Castle, the Principality Stadium, Civic Centre and stunning Cardiff Bay.
Thousands of spectators turn out to cheer on the runners in a city renowned for its sporting passion. Cardiff is a lively capital city offering unique attractions, world-class sports stadiums, vibrant entertainment, waterside eateries and seemingly endless parkland.
The race has been sponsored by Principality Building Society since 2023 and is supported by a number of other partners. It supports a large number of charities and good causes, with more than £3 million raised each year.
The event now offers a full weekend of activities, with a host of family-friendly activities at Saturday’s Cardiff Half Junior preceding Sunday’s half marathon.
It is organised by Run 4 Wales, a not-for-profit charitable trust set up to manage and deliver major sporting events in Wales.
The route takes runners past the capital’s most iconic landmarks with beautiful scenery and historic buildings. The predominately flat and fast course makes it ideal for beginners and elites.
The race starts outside Cardiff Castle and runners then head down past the Principality and Cardiff City Stadiums on the way to Penarth. They take in the glorious Penarth Marina before crossing the barrage and heading to Cardiff Bay. Runners run right through the heart of the bay taking in the Norwegian Church and Wales Millennium Centre.
The course then heads towards the north of the city and runners will complete a loop of the beautiful Roath Park Lake before the grandstand finish in the heart of the city at the Civic Centre.
The wheelchair race will start at 9:50am. Elite, white, green and red pens will start at 10:00am and yellow and blue pens will start at 10:10am. Check out the interactive route map above to see the route in more detail.
The course will be policed and marshalled throughout.
Thanks for the video. I ran this today and I doubt the BBC iPlayer coverage that comes out tomorrow will beat this in encapsulating this great race experience

Great vid! Hoping to run it one year 😃
Thanks @Sheppey10 glad you enjoyed it. By the way I enjoyed your video of Coed Cefn Pwll Du Parkrun. Alesha was in lots of it, she loves hogging the limelight 😀 I like how you had the map and elevation in the corner of the screen as you were going along in the video. Is that hard to do? 🙂
@@AleshaandTheBullet It looked great fun! Glay you liked the Coed vid and yeah Alesha was star of the show, pushed me to the end 😄. Oh yeah it isn't too difficult, you basically use the data from strava and export it. Then import it into a software called Virb and match it up with the video footage. If you ever want me to go through it I would be happy to call👍 Or some google searches might do the trick
I keep a eye out for but didn't see u
That's a shame @markprothero9375 how did you get on? 🙂

@@markprotheroe9375 Well done, that's a very respectible time 🙂who knows perhaps the sub 1.50 will be on for next year? Try eating more Steak bakes, that works for me 😀
