Michael's way was the best for his team at that time. Robert Parish was quoted as saying that MJ could never have gotten away with the way he acted in practice if he was w/Celtics, but he wouldn't have needed to. MJ had a support staff that didn't have the same winning drive that the Celtics or the Lakers had, so he had to brand it in them with a hot iron in order to bring them to a championship level. And that he did... 6 flipping times

@@Richard-hx6mi umm no. As good as MJ is, and I think he's the GOAT, he couldn't have waltzed into Boston in 1984 or even 1988 and started barking commands at Parish, Bird, McHale...etc. You don't get a better example of seniority than the Celtics in the 80s, who have already won championships, who are already legendary. Maybe in 1992 when the Bird and McHale were all old. Or, maybe, in this hypothetical, if MJ came into the league the same year and was added to the roster at the same time as Bird. But, now this comparison is getting silly. At North Carolina MJ was not a tyrant, rather, described as very well mannered by Dean Smith and James Worthy. Even with the Bulls, he was less abrasive with Scottie because he was great and already possessed the necessary discipline and drive to be a champion. The same would have held true for all the hall of famers for the Celtics. Jordan respects champions and destroys those who are not.

MJ probably got so fed up being beaten by the Pistons that it drove him to do everything he could to toughen his teammates to be as mentally tough as he. Isiah once said that the Bad Boys did not worry AT ALL about MJ's teammates. They had zero respect for his supporting cast because they were mentally weak. That is is just so telling. So MJ had to be a hard ass, and that carried over to the 2nd 3peat team. But he was actually probably a nicer, more understanding leader in that 2nd 3peat team, even if that's hard to believe. While MJ was tough on his teammates, he didn't leave them and he made the most of what he had. He brought them with him to the promised land 6 times.

While I can get what you mean, but saying you don't like Steph's "arrogance on the floor" is a disservice to him and the game of basketball. I mean, these guys are professionals - they literally get paid to do this. For a league of that caliber, you have to use every advantage you can get - any one of the ~350 or whatever players can get 60+ points in a game vs regular people. Why does experience counts so much in playoffs for analysts and matchups for example. The mental aspect, including the arrogance and intimidation and showboating and "beating your opponent when they're down" IN A GAME absolutely matters. I'm sure you carry yourself differently in your normal life and at work, as much as most people. If you like basketball, as I'm sure you do, you should learn to appreciate all of it man.

I remember I used to get runs in Orange County with the likes of Sean Rooks, Cedric Ceballos, Miles Simon, Reggie Geary, Cherokee Parks, Alonzo Jamison, Tony Gonzalez, etc. and the games were a lot more intense than what you see in the NBA today. Now when I go to rec center guys play with no tenacity. It's like playing in an All-Star game. I'm 53 so I benefit since it's not physical. But what a huge difference between back then and now.

I do believe all these injuries now are because players load management so much! With anything consistency is a given. If I miss time from the gym then start back it take a minute to get back adjusted. If you sitting out for weeks then you back playing with no practice, scrimmage, your body needs time to adjust to that game time playing. I think that’s why a lot of guys are often hurt!! I really don’t even know why this even came up. I have a theory; when MJ left the NBA TV ratings plummeted. They needed to market players to be just as good as Jordan to attract viewers. But the fact is, it’s just a marketing ploy that has gone ever since Jordan retired and it hasn’t panned out.

Pretty sad when steve said that they’re doing things smarter today. Yeah they are…. For the sake of the millionaires that rely on fans to spend hard earned money to see who they envy play a childs game professionally. Michael and the league back then played hard all the time because it was expected from themselves and the fans. People wanna see EFFORT. They wanna see intense and at the edge of your seat play. Not players being careful and taking breaks so they can play for 30 yrs(exaggeration). Yeah it benefits the players who get paid RIDICULOUSLY to play a dam game, but the mentality of feeling like you’re obligated to entertain and put full effort into every single game is nonexistent today. This one (MJ) did though.

Well, you never got posterized by MJ. Basketball players had something called pride back then, as it was a tough, physical sport. Most of the players were in it for the win, not for the fun or for the money, like nowadays. Players back then loved this sport. They feared MJ because they knew how easy it was for him to drop 40-50-60 points on your team, posterizing you and your teammates in the process. Nobody likes being humiliated like that, but nowadays players just don't give a fuck, they in it for the money, not for the love of the sport, for the love of the fans, or for the love of the city they play for. Club fidelity is basically non existent nowadays with superteams and ridiculous salaries, back then it meant everything. If your team got humiliated, your city got humiliated, your people got humiliated. MJ could do that on any given night to anybody, and he would do it out of spite especially if you talked trash to him. You had to bring your A game and even then pray for the gods, and god forbid trash talking him, and if you got lucky, he walked away with under 40 points.

If LeBron James had played during Michael Jordan's era, he would have been exposed to the style of play prevalent in the NBA at that time. This would have influenced his development in terms of skills, physicality, approach, and mentality, enabling him to compete against the best opponents. Moreover, he would have excelled in that era as well. This holds true not just for LeBron, but for any player in today's NBA. Furthermore, it is important to consider that players from the past decade or so would have also adapted their game if they had grown up playing in today's basketball. If one accepts the notion that today's NBA is weaker, then it follows that it is also smarter, as Steve Kerr pointed out regarding the improved player health preservation strategies. For instance, envision the benefits of resting players like Pat Ewing or Karl Malone for 25 percent of the regular season, resulting in them being stronger beasts in the playoffs. Imagine Kevin Durant bulking up like Kevin Garnett, or envision defensive stalwarts like Dikembe Mutombo, Hakeem Olajuwon, or even Luc Longley with higher three-point shooting percentages, necessitating defenders to guard them even when they ventured beyond the three-point line. The crux of the matter is that different eras produce different types of players, and this debate will continue endlessly. Until next time, when the debate might shift to comparing Wemby to LeBron.

A weak era??? He came into the league during the Lakers/Celtics dynasties and finished against Shaq, Kobe, Duncan, Iverson, etc. The 90's were almost certainly the peak of the NBA. Every team had at least one superstar hall of famer including Isiah Thomas/Joe Dumars, Clyde Drexler, Malone/Stockton, Reggie Miller, David Robinson, Hakeem, Patrick Ewing, Dominique Wilkins, I could go on... There's a reason why no US Olympic team has been called the DREAM TEAM since the 90's. It was a more physical game with fewer foul calls. Every team had at least one 7 footer. Fast breaks were the rule not the exception. Actually, 2000-2010 is one of the lowest scoring periods in modern NBA history, despite the rules having been changed to make it less physical. The Lakers and Spurs were the only truly great teams of the time. Some players like KD and Steph entered the league during this time, but were still developing. Any of the players from the 90's I listed above would have dominated in the weak 2000's.

He was right there with some of the greatest players in NBA History. Love and respect Kerr for what he has given and added to our game. 🙏

A buddy of mine used to play pro hockey and we were just chatting about in basketball how some of the greatest coaches who used to play were role players. I don't think there are any stars who became good coaches, unless you count Bird in Indiana and I kind of don't, love him, but that team was built already and he bolted pretty quick. My buddy said that's also true in hockey, and he speculated that those are the guys who spent the most time actually being coached, and seeing what the coach was doing, so if they had an aptitude, like Kerr said, they had an apprenticeship. Anyway, Kerr's awesome. I saw him play in college, he's always been a good dude, and here he is just killing it at the highest level.

That generally holds in all sports. There may be another factor as well. Often, the superstar players have established such a status for themselves that: a) they may not have patience for players who don't have their ability; and b) they may not want that type of grind after retiring.
Whatever the reasons, Kerr has become a great coach, and a wonderful interview.

In reality, because Jordan is so insanely petty, perfectionist and cannot take the slightest aspect of anything not being his way, he has to curse out and intimidate everyone around him. His final words to Barkley were "F*** You, MFer." And Barkley was literally just doing his job and said the same thing half a dozen other people in the media had said. This generation of basketball fans are definitely the most abnoxious, arrogant, and misinformed bunch I've seen in any sports since the 80s. They have never experienced the presence that MJ use to give to everyone in the world. I never played professional basketball or anything but in the early 90s me and my group of friends were Pistons and Knicks fans. And Michael used to put the fear in us through our TV! We used to be scared to talk bad about him in our homes because we thought he could somehow hear us lol. I'm tellin ya good times lol.

Couldn't agree more. Many are basically delusional. They also rewrite history, and talk about seasons that they never even watched. It's really weird. I grew up in the 90s, but I used ESPN classic to watch the 80s games. I don't think these kids have actually watched the games. Jordan will always be respected and feared ten times more than any superstar of today, like lebron. Lebron and these guys just aren't built the same way psychologically. Most of them come across as pu$$ies.
And teams like Phoenix in '93 were STACKED. And these kids say Jordan didnt have "competition" in the finals???? and The Utah jazz SWEPT the lakers with shaq and young Kobe in 98! These kids have no idea what they're talking about. Jordan was just too good, and too competitive. That's why the Bulls always won. And I'm a laker fan, since I was a little kid in the 80s. Not chicago bulls fan
